Recycle Week
Recycle Week starts on Monday (14 October)!
This is a week all about recycling our rubbish. Recycling involves taking items that we’ve thrown away and turning them into new things, such as coats, toys and newspapers! It’s much better for our planet than making everything from scratch because that uses up Earth’s resources and can cause lots of pollution.
This Recycle Week, we’re giving you a rescue mission! When you think of the word ‘rescue’, you might think of a frefghter saving a cat stuck up a tree. Or you might think of a lifeguard helping a struggling swimmer. This rescue mission is a little bit different, but it’s still incredibly important. Read on to fnd out what it is.
The theme of this year’s Recycle Week is Rescue Me.
As a country, we’re pretty great at recycling. However, there are some items that people often forget can be recycled. Rubbish such as yoghurt pots, deodorant cans and toilet rolls sometimes end up in normal bins. These items should be recycled instead, so they need rescuing!
That’s exactly what your rescue mission is about. We want you to rescue at least one piece of rubbish from your bin that can be recycled instead. It could be a toothpaste box, shampoo bottle or empty pizza box! Then, once Recycling Week is over, we think it would be brilliant if you carried on rescuing rubbish that can be recycled! So will you take on our rescue mission?
To find out more about what can and can’t be recycled, check out recyclenow.com/how-to-recycle/what-can-be-recycled
Regular readers of Kids Alive! will know that we’re very keen on taking care of the environment. We believe it’s really important, so that’s why we decided to feature Recycle Week in this week’s issue. However, recycling is just one part of the challenge. To help our world, we also need to think about things such as not wasting water, walking between places instead of being driven and making sure lights and electrical devices are turned off when we’re not using them.
That might seem like a massive challenge for you to take on. However, our world is actually a gift from God. He gave it to us and asked us to look after it. I don’t know about you, but when someone gives me a precious gift, I want to make sure I take good care of it. So let’s all work together and smash the challenge we’ve been given!
WShowing Love
hat is the frst thought that pops into your head when you see a heart? If I was to guess, I would say love! Am I right? Who has that special place in your heart? The person you love more than anyone else. Maybe it’s your family or your BFF (Best Friend Forever). It’s really easy to love these people, because they love us too.
Have you ever had someone be unkind to you? Maybe they’ve said something about you that wasn’t true. How did you feel about them? Should we love those who are unkind to us, treat us badly or even say hurtful words about us?
Well, in today’s Bible cartoon Jesus was teaching on a hillside. The lesson he was giving that day is called ‘The Sermon on the Mount’. During this lesson, Jesus said some things that really surprised those who were listening to him. One of the things he said was ‘love your enemies’. Now that might sound crazy, but Jesus said that when we love our enemies (the people who aren’t very nice to us), we are acting like children of God. If we only show love to those who love us and are only kind to our friends, what is so great about that? Everybody does that!
Read the comment on the right about loving our enemies
Loving our enemies can be really hard at times. However, there is a very good reason why we should do it. It demonstrates the love of God to others. We can be a positive role model for others, and it may even transform our enemies into our friends!

Bumper Bible Breakdown
Did you know the Bible isn’t one big book? It’s actually 66 books put together to tell one big story of God’s great love. Join us as we look at each Bible book and discover why God made the world, what went wrong and how in the end God saved the world through his son, Jesus.
Queen Esther
Have you ever kept a secret? Years before Ezra returned to Jerusalem, a woman called Esther had to keep a secret. Esther was married to Xerxes, the king of Persia, and she had been told by her cousin, Mordecai, not to tell Xerxes that she was Jewish!
One of the most powerful men in the land, Haman, became really upset with Mordecai. That’s because he wanted Mordecai to bow down to him, but Mordecai wouldn’t do it! Mordecai would only worship God.
When Haman found out that Mordecai was Jewish, he decided that he would get rid of every Jew in Persia. However, Esther saved her people by revealing her secret to Xerxes! Xerxes was so mad that Haman would try to get rid of Esther’s people that he had Haman killed. Then Mordecai became the second most powerful man in Persia!

Photos can create optical illusions using perspective. This photo might look like the person is holding the Leaning Tower of Pisa up with their hands, but they’re actually standing quite a distance from the tower, making them look larger than they are. 13 October
Optical illusions use colour, light or patterns to confuse our brains – that means the illusions look different to what is actually there.
What do you call a recycling bin that’s always dancing? A cancan! Why did the sun go to school? To get brighter!

WWIN! COMPETITION
hen was the last time you screamed? Was it when you felt a creepy-crawly climbing up your back? Or was it when a friend jumped out at you and screamed ‘BOO!’ to try to scare you? Perhaps it was when you were on a ridiculously rapid roller coaster!
Winners of this week’s competition will get their own ScreamerZ soft toy. There are three characters to collect – a monkey, a rabbit and a bear. They look like ordinary cuddly pals, but this trio has a twist that makes them like no other soft toy. It doesn’t take a spider, someone shouting ‘BOO!’ or a roller coaster to make them scream. If you squeeze your ScreamerZ gently, they’ll scream. Squeeze them harder for a big shriek! They don’t hold back!
For your opportunity to win your own ScreamerZ prank toy, answer the question below and email your full name, age, address and answer to Remember to put ‘ScreamerZ Competition’ in the subject box. Your entry needs to reach us by Friday 8 November when the winners will be chosen. You can also enter by on the coupon below and posting it to: ScreamerZ Competition, Kids Alive! 1 Champion Park, London SE5 8FJ.

Be a Changemaker!
Black History Month 2024 is all about Black British changemakers! Changemakers are people who set out to make a positive change to the world.
In last week’s issue, we learnt about four fantastic changemakers – Ottobah Cugoano, Mary Seacole, John Richard Archer and Kathleen Wrsama. This week, we want to let you know that you can be a changemaker too!
How Can You Be a Changemaker?
Being a changemaker means getting active. It means not sitting back when you see something that needs changing, but instead putting in the effort to help make things better.
Here are a few ideas for how you can be a changemaker in the communities that you’re a part of.
Be a Changemaker at School
There are lots of different things about school to like, such as having interesting lessons, spending playtime with friends and eating delicious school dinners! However, you might have seen a few things at your school that you don’t like.
You’ve probably seen or experienced bullying. You may have even seen situations where people have been treated differently or called names because of the colour of their skin, or because of their religion.
You can be a changemaker at your school by standing up for people when they’re being treated badly. You can tell a teacher about what you’ve seen. Then you can ask the kid who’s being bullied if they’d like to play with you, so that they know how much you care.
When you see something you don’t like at school, speak up! You could even have a meeting with your head teacher to try to make your school a better place for everyone.
Be a Changemaker at Church
Believe it or not, you can even be a changemaker at church! In fact, we reckon that your church leaders would love to hear any ideas that you have.
Perhaps you’d like to see kids be more involved in services. Why not be a changemaker and share that with a leader of your church? You might be able to join in with a band at your church or help the tech team.
You could even be a changemaker by asking your church leaders to help people at your church to learn more about different cultures! There might be someone at your church from another country who could teach the church some songs from their home country. You might even discover a style of worship that’s completely new to you!
Fight Against Racism
This Black History Month, we’ve learnt that a massive number of black people throughout history have experienced racism. Unfortunately, racism still exists today! You can be a changemaker by learning more about racism and then using that knowledge to help people.
To learn about racism, you could visit a museum such as the London Museum Docklands or the International Slavery Museum in Liverpool. If you’re a keen reader, you could check out a fab book called Stand Up and Speak Out Against Racism by Yassmin Abdel-Magied. There’s also an excellent guide on the history of racism at bbc.co.uk/newsround/52965984
It’s important to learn about racism, but it’s just as important that you stand up to it when you see it happening! You should keep an eye out for racial discrimination (that means treating someone unfairly because of their race) in the communities that you’re a part of.
It might be hard to believe, but people can experience racism at school and church! If you think that someone is being racist at school or church, you should always tell a teacher or church leader. Be a changemaker by calling out racism when you see it!
Be a changemaker this Black History Month!
