id you hear the one about the day the whole country laughed and laughed? Well, you’re about to, because Monday 16 August is Tell a Joke Day. Whether you love a good old ‘Knock, knock!’, a corny ‘Why did the chicken cross the road?’, or a classic ‘What do you call a…?’, Monday (or should that be Pun-day?) is the day for you! Regular readers will know Kids Alive! loves a good giggle – in fact it’s right at the centre of everything we do. Don’t believe us? Head to the centre spread to find a range of rib-ticklers to get you off and chuckling. When it comes to jokes it’s often said that oldies are goodies, but maybe you can celebrate Tell a Joke Day by making up a brand-new joke of your own. But remember, comedy is a serious business – you have to make sure your jokes make some sort of sense. While you and your pals might find random riddles funnier than a clown in a joke shop, if your audience doesn’t get your gags they’re going to fall flatter than a pancake on the kitchen floor. But why celebrate this most silly of days? Because laughter is good for you! A great guffaw or more can lower your stress levels, reduce your blood pressure, release endorphins (feel-good chemicals in your brain) and improve your well-being. So what are you waiting for? Grab your joke book from the shelf and get joshing – if not for yourself then for someone who needs a right good laugh!
There’s a laughing emoji hidden on every page of this week’s comic. See if you can find them all!
I love a good laugh. I find all sorts of things funny – good jokes, silly noises, funny stories, people falling over … OK, I know I shouldn’t laugh at people falling over, but sometimes it’s just funny. I even laugh at myself occasionally – usually when I’ve done something daft like putting milk in the cupboard and trying to put cereal in the fridge. The Bible mentions laughter quite a few times. There’s the time when God told Sarah and Abraham that they would have a baby even though they were really old – Sarah just laughed! And in Proverbs 17:22 we’re reminded laughter is good for us – it says, ‘A cheerful heart is good medicine…’ (NIV). The Bible also tells us that even God has a good laugh at times. So, enjoy Tell a Joke Day and enjoy a right good giggle – God doesn’t mind and it’s good for you!

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT HOW GOD HAS A PLAN FOR EVERYONE
Be Transformed!
O
says Ibukun Baku
ver the years, I’ve been blessed to meet Christians who have shared their stories about how Jesus changed their lives. Many of them had done things they weren’t proud of, but now they’re pastors, youth leaders and church members, faithfully serving God. Their experience with Jesus transformed their lives and now they’re committed to sharing their good news with others. In this week’s cartoon Bible story, we see one of the biggest transformations in Bible history! Saul had been an excellent student under the best religious teachers. However, in his eagerness to protect Jewish customs and history he became the Early Church’s number one enemy. In fact, he was on his way to Damascus to arrest Christians when he had a
personal encounter with Jesus that changed his life for ever. Immediately, Saul was converted from the church’s greatest enemy to the greatest messenger of the good news of Jesus. Saul used all his knowledge and training to prove that Jesus really was the Son of God and the letters he wrote to encourage churches have inspired millions of people since. God has a special plan for everyone. No matter what mistakes we’ve made, he still wants to be our friend. Because God knows everything about us, he can use all our experiences, gifts and talents in a way that’s just right for us. Would you like to become friends with Jesus too? If so ask Jesus to help you follow his way for living today.

The yo-yo was an ancient toy used by Greek children about 2,500 years ago! A Greek vase painting from 440 BC shows a boy playing with a yo-yo. Records from the period describe yo-yos made from wood, metal or painted terracotta (fired clay). There are also European and Indian illustrations from the 1700s of people playing with yo-yos! The yo-yo became a popular toy in the late 1920s, when Pedro Flores opened a yo-yo manufacturing company in the USA.

Meet Martha
(name changed)
Martha is 13 years old and lives in Karonga District in Malawi. She shared what it’s meant to her to have clean water close to home...
‘My dream is to become a nurse, to take care of fellow Malawians and develop my village and the whole of Malawi. ‘I struggled for many years to access education due to scarcity of water. I had to walk a long way to collect water every day. This was a very dangerous task. I remember getting up at 3am one day to collect water from the lake with my older sister. On our way to the lake, we met a man who tried to hurt us. We were so fortunate that a farmer appeared and chased the man away. I don’t want to think about what would have happened if the farmer had not appeared. ‘Recently, The Salvation Army drilled a borehole in our community. As it is close to my home, I no longer have to get up early to collect water. I can study before my house chores and attend school every day. My performance at school has really improved! ‘With the opportunity to go to school, my dream of being a nurse is now a real possibility.’
Food is essential for people’s growth and development. Without access to regular nutritious meals, children can become malnourished and sick. When they go to school hungry and tired, it is difficult to pay attention in class.
Meet Evan and Angelica (names changed)
Evan and Angelica’s dad is a farmer. He grows maize on a large piece of land but struggled to get a good yield. Since the harvests didn’t produce enough food, the whole family was becoming malnourished. Going to school on an empty stomach meant Evan and Angelica were not doing so well in class. Their dad joined the Salvation Army project to learn some different farming techniques and new technology. Since the training, the harvests have produced plenty of food for the family, and even more that he can sell for income.
Pray for The Salvation Army’s work in countries such as Malawi and Zimbabwe. Pray that many farmers will get the help they need from the projects offered and that they’ll be able to provide the food needed for their families.
Evan said, ‘We now have enough food. We like to eat porridge before going to school. These days, after school, I know that I will find food at home.’
Take on Challenge 750 If you’re interested in supporting children around the world to access good, nutritious food, why not take on Challenge 750? It’s simple, just choose your own challenge based on the number 750. Find out more at justgiving.com/campaign/feedinghopehelpinghand2021
