O

n Monday (20 November) children around the world will celebrate World Children’s Day. Established in 1954 as Universal Children’s Day, it’s been marked every year since on 20 November. This date is important because it’s the date in 1959 when the United Nations (UN) General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. In 1989, the UN adopted the Convention of the Rights of the Child, which describes who children are, their rights and the responsibilities of governments. Many activities will take place on 20 November, including kids takeover days – when children are encouraged to do the jobs of grown-ups for the day. Perhaps you should ask your headteacher if you could do their job for a day! Lots of schools, public buildings and well-known landmarks will be lit with blue lights, and people are being encouraged to wear something blue to shine a light on issues that are important to children. There are all sorts of other things you could do to mark this special day: have a picnic, host a treasure hunt, enjoy a pizza party or bake with your family and friends. Even if it feels too late to organise a World Children’s Day event for this year, speak to your parents, carers, schoolteachers or church leaders about organising something for next year. And remember any time is a good time to celebrate being a child!

For more info about World Children’s Day visit un.org/en/observances/world-childrens-day or unicef.org/world-childrens-day

I loved being a kid – it was so much fun! I grew up in a happy home with a fab family, went to good schools, had loads of friends, and belonged to a church where people encouraged me to love Jesus and live his way. Sadly, not all children grow up in loving families, safe homes, enjoy a good education or even get opportunities to play. That’s why days like World Children’s Day are important – to keep on reminding grown-ups who make decisions that all children need to be allowed to be children, and they deserve the very best. This week, I’ve been reminded of a song called ‘Who You Say I Am’, which includes the lines: ‘In my Father’s house, There’s a place for me, I’m a child of God, yes, I am’. I hope you know that you were created by God, who loves you and wants the very best for you.

Read the comment below about trusting Jesus to keep you safe

Don’t Panic – Trust Jesus by Justin Reeves

H

ave you ever been on a boat in a storm? When I was seven, my family went on holiday to Brittany in France. The best way for us to get there was to sail on a ferry from our home town of Plymouth to Roscoff, which is a six-hour voyage. The journey to France was fine, but the journey home two weeks later was awful! A storm blew up and the ferry rocked and dipped from bow to stern and port to starboard! My head span and my stomach churned. Every so often the ship dropped so suddenly I was left walking on air. I don’t mind telling you I was very scared, not to mention very sick! I can totally understand why the disciples who were on board the boat with Jesus in this week’s

cartoon Bible story were frightened. Life is often described as a journey and some people refer to the tough times life throws at us as storms. I can think of a number of times in my life when things haven’t gone smoothly and I’ve made things worse because I’ve tried to fix them myself. Sometimes it wasn’t until I started panicking that I asked Jesus to help. Surprise, surprise, that’s when things started to get better. Jesus is always there for you. So next time you feel like things are starting to go wrong, ask for Jesus’ help sooner rather than later. Better still, include him in all that you do by talking to him about everything and trust him to keep you safe.

Scott and Irwin driving the Lunar Roving Vehicle on the Moon

DO YOU LIKE A QUIZ? whY DON’T YOU LOOK AT PAGE 6 AND HAVE A GO AT THE BIBLE BRAINTEASERS QUIZ? See if you can spot this version of me on ANOTHER PAGE IN THIS WEEK’S ISSUE.

The cosmos or universe is so enormous and stupendous it’s mind-boggling! Here are some facts about space that are … well, cosmic!

NASA pictures

Apollo 15

How cool would it be to land on the Moon? Well, in 1971 David Scott and James Irwin were fortunate enough to be selected for the Apollo 15 lunar mission, becoming the seventh and eighth people to walk on the Moon. Their spacecraft also carried a fold-up Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) which enabled the astronauts to be the first people to drive on the Moon! The LRV had an electric motor and could be driven up to eight miles per hour.

A distorted image of the feather and hammer experiment

Scott and Irwin also conducted a very important experiment during their mission. To better understand gravity (the force that pulls objects in space towards each other), the astronauts dropped a feather and a hammer at the same time. We all know that on Earth the hammer would land before the feather – however on the Moon both objects landed at exactly the same time. This proved the force of gravity also exists on the Moon but it’s not as strong as it is on Earth.

Pukka Pastimes! Regular readers will remember that the Kids Alive! team has been getting some help from JosiahDaniel, who is with us for work experience. J-D, as we call him, has all sorts of interesting hobbies, so we thought we’d get him to tell you about some of them, just in case you’d like to give them a try too.

Visiting the Wall Indoor climbing is an exciting, fun sport. It has two forms: roped climbing and bouldering. Roped climbing uses a rope and a harness to keep the climber safe. A climber must wear a harness and tie the rope into their harness using a knot called the rethreaded figure-of-eight and a stopper knot. With top roping, all the climber has to do is tie in and start climbing! Their belayer, the person in charge of the other end of the rope, ensures that the climber does not fall and hurt themselves. Top roping is a fun way to try indoor climbing for the first time. Another way to try climbing is to do bouldering. In bouldering, climbers try to get to the top of a small wall without the need for a harness or ropes. There are a lot of young people who do climbing professionally. One example is Lucy Garlick who is currently in the British junior and senior teams at only 16 years old! Visit thebmc.co.uk to see whether there are any walls near you and give climbing a go.

Feel the Beat! Who doesn’t like music? There’s no doubt about it, music is something that’s part of everyone’s life. To make music, a musician must use instruments. There are thousands of different instruments from piano and harpsichord to mandolin and erhu. Each instrument is unique but can be used in many kinds of music. One of the best instruments in the world is the voice! Singing is a great way to get involved in music. There are also many different styles of music such as classical or contemporary music. Someone who writes music is known as a composer. JS Bach, Fanny Mendelssohn, Keith Green and Stuart Townend are all composers of different types. Why not ask your parents or carers if you can hear some of their music? If you’re interested in playing an instrument or maybe even writing a little song of your own, speak to your parents or carers about getting lessons. Your school may even have music lessons you can join.

World Toilet Day Back in June, we featured The Salvation Army’s international clean water projects in KA! World every week. In one of the issues’ quizzes we asked the question, ‘When is World Toilet Day?’ Do you remember the answer? Don’t worry if not (we asked you a while ago)! The answer is 19 November. It may seem strange that there is a day focused on toilets. It’s not exactly the most glamorous or even pleasant thing to talk about, but the truth is we all need to use them – toilets are essential for our health and well-being.

Toilet Troubles More than two billion people don’t have access to a toilet and without a safe place to use the loo, people are vulnerable to disease. It’s important to be clean after going to the toilet and have somewhere to wash your hands too. When this is not available people can become poorly.

In places where people don’t have a private toilet, they are forced to go outside. Not only is this unhygienic but in such dark and secluded areas, people can also be vulnerable to being hurt by others.

Around the world, some schools don’t provide private toilets, which means girls are more likely to skip school and go home to use the loo. Once home, they may be asked to help with household chores, which keeps them from going back to school. It may even be too far to travel back to school again. This means they miss out on learning, which can damage their education and limit their potential.

12 KA - p12-13 - 18 November.indd 1

10/11/2023 12:07

Building Blocks Not having easy access to toilets isn’t fair, so The Salvation Army in Malawi has been supporting schools and communities to build toilets and install handwashing facilities. This means boys and girls have clean, safe and private blocks to go to the toilet. They can then go straight back to class and carry on learning.

Building new toilet blocks is just one part of these projects. The Salvation Army also offers training in how to stay hygienic and healthy, and they do this in fun and engaging ways through dance, drama and music workshops.

School Sanitation At Lupaso School in Karonga, Malawi, some of the mums from the local community have set up the Lupaso School Mother Group. Agnes is the secretary and she shared what the group is for:

‘We get together to talk about how we can look out for the students at school. We’re here to support them. The Salvation Army came and trained us on hygiene and sanitation so we were able to then train the students. Now we’re all practising what we learned. Since The Salvation Army built new toilet blocks things have improved for students.’

Spend A Penny, Give A Pound

Toilet Tally

If you’re interested in raising money for clean water projects – like this one in Malawi – you might like to take part in ‘Spend a Penny, Give a Pound’. It’s simple: over the course of a day (or longer if you choose), simply donate £1 for each time you – or someone in your house – uses the loo! You can use the toilet tally on the right to keep track and scan the code to donate.

Sutton Shine a Light During a creative arts session, kids at Sutton Salvation Army had lots of fun at a spectacular light party! They enjoyed games, crafting, cooking, eating doughnuts without using their hands, sharing pizza and praying together. Grown-ups from the church were also invited to share their talents, such as cooking or crafting. It was a great way for the kids to get to know more people in the church family. Jesus says in the Bible, ‘I am the Light of the World. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life’ (John 8:12 New International Version). That means that during times others find scary, including Halloween, Christians can be that shining light to make things seem a little less scary. What ways can you be a shining light to others?
