D perfect for when it’s raining cats and

o you love wearing your wellies? They’re

dogs, jumping in muddy puddles and making footprints in fresh snow. You know what else they’re good for? Raising money for charity! That’s right, you can spread Christmas cheer and raise money for a fantastic charity on Christmas Wellies Day! Christmas Wellies Day is organised by The Salvation Army and it’s really simple to get involved. All you need is some wellington boots and a few decorations. You can add tinsel, festive stickers or even hang some Christmas baubles! Then wear your fabulously festive wellies to school on Wednesday 6 December. Your school teachers can collect donations – any amount people can give is fine – and set up a JustGiving website to collect the money for The Salvation Army. The money raised will help support The Salvation Army’s incredible work. Be a star and raise money for The Salvation Army this Christmas! Talk to your teachers about taking part in Christmas Wellies Day. All the information you and they need is on the following website – salvationarmy.org.uk/Christmas-wellies-day. They can also email ‘challenge@salvationarmy.org.uk’ if they have any questions.

When was the last time you did something nice for someone? Did you feel good? I love buying gifts for people and I really enjoy helping people – I actually enjoy that more than I like being treated or helped myself. What with Christmas Wellies Day and Giving Tuesday there’s a lot in this issue about helping others by raising and giving money. But there are loads of ways to help people that don’t involve dipping into your pocket money. Sometimes all anyone needs is a friendly smile, a kind word or some time and company. The most important thing about giving to others is the attitude you do it with. In 2 Corinthians 9:7, we’re reminded that we shouldn’t give our money, time or talents if it makes us feel sad or grumpy. In fact, it tells us that God loves happy givers. What can you happily give to others this week?

Read the comment below about what a wonderful place Heaven is

Just Heavenly says Justin Reeves

I

wonder what Heaven is like. It’s kind of hard to know, given that anyone who has ever been there is … erm … well … still there. I know at least one young person who worries that Heaven is going to be boring – mainly because they’ve been taught that when they go there, they’ll live there for ever. To them living for ever seems like an awfully long time, which to them means it’ll be boring. I’m afraid I can’t help you to understand what Heaven will be like – I might be old, but I’m not there yet. However, I do know we won’t all be sitting around on clouds playing harps and I’m certain it’ll be anything but boring. Someone who was given some idea of what

Heaven will be like is Jesus’ friend John. Towards the end of his life he was forced to live on an island far from his home. During that time, he was visited by an angel who shared a vision with him, and John wrote that vision down. The vision included what Heaven will be like. John’s vision seems kind of crazy and it’s difficult to understand, but the main point of it is for us to know that Jesus will come again, and that when he does everything will be OK. There’s even a bit that says, ‘…There will be no more death, sadness, crying, or pain’ (Revelation 21:4 International Children’s Bible). I don’t know about you, but that sounds just heavenly to me.

Soyuz

The cosmos or universe is so enormous and stupendous it’s mind-boggling! Here are some facts about space that are … well, cosmic!

NASA pictures

Apollo-Soyuz Test Project

Between 1955 and 1975 the Soviet Union and the United States of America (USA) were in competition with each other launching manned and unmanned satellites into space. That all changed on 15 July 1975 when they launched two spacecraft together named Apollo and Soyuz as part of the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project. The total time both spacecraft were in space was only 19 hours 55 minutes, but in that time various scientific experiments and demonstrations took place.

USA astronaut Thomas Stafford and Soviet Union cosmonaut Alexie Lenov in the hatchway connecting the ‘Apollo’ and ‘Soyuz’ spacecraft

The purpose of the mission was far more than simply collecting data, it was really to show the world the two countries were working together and not in competition. Soyuz and Apollo docked (joined together) and the crew members opened their hatches, shook hands and shared meals together. This was the beginning of the Soviet Union and the USA working as one on future space missions and experiments.

lifestyle and caring ve ti ac an d an y th al he Living a tual well-being. iri sp d an l ta en m , al ic ys for your ph

Giving Tuesday Will you be taking part in Christmas Wellies Day on Wednesday 6 December? (Check out page 3.) If you like the idea of doing something to help others, you’ll probably also be interested in Giving Tuesday.

Giving Tuesday will take place on Tuesday 28 November and it’s basically a day to do good things. It’s not really about giving presents (there’s plenty of that next month!), it’s about volunteering your time, sharing your skills, giving money or donating things such as food or clothes. Giving presents to others is lovely, but it’s not the only way we can show others we care.

Time There are loads of ways you can give time to help others. You could give up your time to help your siblings with their homework or set up a mentoring scheme at your school. That could help to make sure other kids are happy and settled at your school.

You could also give up your time to help make your community cleaner. How about going litter picking with your parents or carers or taking part in a beach clean?

Fundraising for charity is another great way to give up time for others. Apart from taking part in Christmas Wellies Day, you could also do a sponsored event or hold a Christmas lights competition for your street this year! Ask for donations for charity and help make a difference.

For more fundraising ideas, ask your teachers to check out The Salvation Army’s Schools Fundraising Pack at salvationarmy.org.uk/fundraise-us/school-fundraising

12 KA - p12-13 - 25 November.indd 1

17/11/2023 12:20

Skills What special skills or talents do you have? Are you good at baking? You could make some scrumptious treats to sell for charity. Do you love paper crafts? Why not make some Christmas cards for a local older people’s care home? Do you have a musical talent? You could organise a show or concert. It could raise money for charity and make people happy at the same time!

Voice You can also give your voice to a cause that matters to you. That might be writing to your local MP about something local to you that needs fixing or telling others about an issue that’s close to your heart. What are you passionate about and what can you do to make sure your voice is heard?

Love Sharing love is one of the best gifts you can give. Whether you’re being kind to a new person at your school or simply smiling at someone, sharing love and kindness couldn’t be a more amazing thing to do for others.

You could even do something kind for strangers. How about making up bags to help people experiencing homelessness this winter? Things like blankets, gloves, woolly hats, toiletries, wet wipes or snacks could really make a difference to them. See if there’s a charity such as The Salvation army working in your area that can help distribute them.

Donating Unfortunately there are many people who don’t have the food, clothes or other essentials that they need. If you have clothes, shoes or coats that your family doesn’t need, ask your parents or carers to help you find a charity to donate them to. Or buy some extra shopping so your family can donate it to a food bank and help other families get the things they need.

You could also see if your local hospital needs any pre-loved toys or games for the children to play with while they’re staying there.

Bible Bit The Bible tells us that giving is great too! If you read 2 Corinthians 9:6–8 you’ll see it says, ‘God loves people who love to give’ and ‘God can bless you with everything you need, and you will always have more than enough to do all kinds of good things for others.’ (Contemporary English Version).

What will you give to others this Tuesday? KA - p12-13 - 25 November.indd 2

Cool Colourings

What an awesome Viking Colouring. It was sent by Amelia, age 8. We love the people with surprised faces!

Danny, age 7, sent us this Cricketer Colouring. Can you see the details he’s added to the background? Fab creativity, Danny!

Oliver, age 7, sent this out-ofthis-world World Space Week Colouring. What a great choice of colours!

This is a brilliant Big Birthday Colouring that was coloured in by Liam, age 5, to celebrate The Salvation Army’s birthday earlier this year.

What a neat The Little Mermaid Colouring! It was completed by Tessie, age 13. Ariel’s tail is particularly cool!

There’s no shortage of snow round here at Christmas…

What are you doing, Percy?

…But my cousin lives in Spain.

So I thought I’d send him a box of fresh snow to make it more Christmassy for him.

He never has snow at Christmas, which is a shame.

That sounds like a great idea, Percy, except for one thing that you’ve not thought about.

What’s that, Patch?

It’s hot in Spain. I’m not sure your cousin will appreciate a box of melted snow!
