There are so many weird and wonderful events happening across the UK this weekend! One of the weirder events happening is the World Bog Snorkelling Championships! It’s taking place on 27 August in Llanwrtyd Wells, Wales and it’s a 60-metre swim in a peat bog!

If you like the sound of that you might also like the World Gravy Wrestling Championships (28 August) in Stacksteads, Lancashire! Contestants wrestle in a pool full of gravy and points are awarded for fancy dress, comedy effect and entertainment!

Or how about watching some people pull a plane? The Dorset Plane Pull (28 August) sees teams of 20 people try to pull a Boeing 737 a distance of 50 metres to raise money for charity!

There are also plenty of wonderful events to check out. There are two epic carnivals to enjoy – Notting Hill Carnival in London (27–28 August) and Leeds West Indian Carnival Parade (28 August). Or if you fancy some Highland dancing and games, there are several options to choose from, including Cowal Highland Gathering (24-26 August) and Glenurquhart Highland Games (26 August).

Enjoy a weird and wonderful weekend!

The world is a weird and wonderful place. For example, I was watching a wildlife programme about warthogs the other day – now they’re weird-looking creatures! Then recently, I was on a beach, jumping through waves with my daughters while the sun shone – wonderful!

There’s some weird stuff in the Bible too. In Numbers 22, there’s a story that includes a talking donkey. And in 2 Kings 23–24, Elijah got a couple of bears to attack a bunch of kids, just because they called him baldy! I’m not being rude about the Bible, it’s just that some of the stories seem a bit weird. There are loads of wonderful stories in the Bible too – stories of healing, kindness, freedom and empowerment! And there are loads of top tips to help you live your best life by living Jesus’ way. Check out some Bible stories today.

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT USING YOUR TALENTS FOR GOD AND STAYING CLOSE TO HIM

Don’t Keep God in a Box says Justin Reeves

Do you have a special place where you keep precious things? I have boxes containing old photos, football programmes, my collection of toy Porsche cars, and things that my wife and children gave me. My boxes are very ordinary, but some people like to decorate memory or treasure boxes so they’re extra special.

In this week’s Bible cartoon we see an extraspecial box that God asked the Israelites to make. The Ark of the Covenant was where the Ten Commandments were stored. Not only did God ask the Israelites to make the Ark, he also asked them to make an extra-special building to keep it in – the Tabernacle.

God wanted the Tabernacle to be special so

he gave speci c instructions about how to build it. He asked the Israelites to give their treasured possessions, gifts, skills and talents to help build it. It was very fancy and became a very special place for the Israelites, because it was a place where God showed his presence.

For lots of people church is somewhere they feel God’s presence – some churches are even called tabernacles. They’re also places where people feel they can use their gifts, talents and skills for God. Going to church is really helpful, but make sure you don’t limit God to just one place or group of people. Stay close to God all day, every day, wherever you are and whoever you’re with. That way you’ll always have a special place to feel God’s presence.

Gift Box

Make this box special by writing or drawing your gifts, talents and skills. How can you use them for God? Perhaps you could use this space to draw or write about a place where you feel close to God.

Luna 3 was launched on 6 October 1959 by the Soviet Union and was the third spacecraft to successfully reach the Moon successfully. The main reason it was launched was to take photographs of the Moon’s surface as it was ying past. Luna 3 provided very blurry pictures but with the help of computers, a map of the side of the Moon furthest away from Earth was made.

There was a total of 29 photographs taken in 40 minutes by Luna 3. These photographs showed that there were many mountains on the far side of the Moon. This is very different to the side closest to Earth, which has less mountains and more lava left over from erupting volcanoes.

Living a healthy and an active lifestyle and caring for your physical, mental and spiritual well-being.

Healthy Habits

In last week’s issue of Kids Alive! we looked at how important it is to keep our bodies and minds healthy. This week we’re going to delve into the second part of a healthy lifestyle – eating a balanced diet.

Why is a Balanced Diet So Important?

Eating the right type of foods helps to keep our bodies in tip-top shape. Eating a healthy, balanced diet also helps us to have the energy to do everything we need to. Just like vehicles need fuel to work, our bodies need good nutrients to run properly.

Eatwell Guide

Starchy Food

Fruit and Veg

Have you ever heard of the Eatwell Guide? It shows how much of what we eat should come from different food groups. You don’t need to get the right balance with every meal, it’s more of a guide for food over a day or even a week. There are ve main food groups. Here’s some more information about what they are.

Fruit and Veg

Fruit and vegetables should make up just over a third of the food we eat. Aim to eat at least ve portions of fruit or vegetables a day. These can be fresh, frozen, tinned, dried or juiced. However, make sure you don’t count more than one glass of juice or smoothie a day.

Starchy Food

Starchy foods, such as potatoes, bread, rice and pasta, should make up just over another third of the food we eat. Starchy foods are great for energy and higher bre or wholegrain options are especially good. That includes wholewheat pasta or brown rice.

Protein Dairy

Oils and Spreads

12

Protein

Beans, pulses, sh, eggs, lentils and meat are protein-rich foods, which are good for our bodies. Lean cuts of meat are better than processed meat, such as bacon, ham and sausages. Experts also suggest having two portions of sh a week, one of which should be oily, such as salmon, sardines or mackerel.

Dairy

Milk, cheese and yoghurt are also good options for getting protein into our bodies. They’re also full of calcium, which helps keep our bones healthy.

Oils and Spreads

Some fats are needed in our diet, but it’s important to think about what types of fat we eat. Unsaturated fats, such as rapeseed, olive and sun ower oils are much better for us.

Many of us eat too much saturated fat and sugar, which is high in foods that should be treats, such as cakes, biscuits, chocolate, sweets and puddings. These should be eaten occasionally and in smaller amounts.

Hydrate!

This one isn’t on the Eatwell plate, but we also need to keep hydrated to feel at our best. Water is crucial for our health. Experts recommend drinking six to eight cups of water every day.

Look at the Labels

Nutrition information labels help us work out if certain products are better or worse for us. Some pre-packed foods have colour-coded labels to make it easier to understand. These colours explain whether the item has high, medium or low amounts of fat, saturated fat, sugars and salt. Red means high, amber means medium and green means low.

For more information about having a healthy lifestyle, check out nhs.uk/healthier-families. There’s loads of advice as well as recipes, food swap options and exercise ideas.
