LET'S GLOW!
Are you afraid of the dark? Darkness can be scary. It can get so dark outside you can’t even see where you’re going! So we completely understand why people might fnd the dark spooky. There are lots of other things people fnd spooky in this world too, and that’s exactly what Halloween is about. It began thousands of years ago and used to be called Samhain. Celtic people believed that on the night of Samhain, ghosts and evil spirits would come to visit them. However, we don’t need to be afraid of the scary things in this world. When it gets so dark that you can’t see your own feet, you can see where you’re going when you turn on a torch! Suddenly the dark isn’t so scary anymore. Just like a torch, there’s a light in this world that guides us and protects us. That light is Jesus! This Halloween, we won’t be celebrating dark or spooky things. Instead, we’re going to choose to share the light of Jesus with others. We’d love it if you choose to join us in sharing that light too! You could do that by colouring in the poster on page 11 and placing it in a window. Or you could give your trick-or-treating friends a copy of Kids Alive! You could even go to a light party, which is a party to celebrate the light of Jesus!
Whatever you do this Halloween, know that you don’t need to be afraid of anything in this world, not even the dark. Jesus is always with you!
Share the light by colouring in the poster on page 11 and putting it in a window
To fnd out more about how Jesus is the Light of the World, turn to pages 4 and 5. To learn more ways you can share the light of Jesus with others, check out pages 12 and 13.
There have been Halloween decorations, treats and costumes in shops for weeks. That’s because Halloween is something that lots of people enjoy, and I’m sure some of you reading this enjoy it too. However, I hope after reading this issue of Kids Alive! that you’ll choose to celebrate all the light and good stuff in our world instead of the scary things.
When people around you are enjoying getting dressed up as spooky things, it can be hard to go against the crowd and be different. It takes a lot of courage to stand up to our friends and say that we don’t want to do something. Don’t worry, though, because you don’t have to do this alone. Jesus is with you! With Jesus by your side and shining a light for you, you don’t need to be afraid of anything. So be strong and courageous and shine your light this Halloween!
Let Jesus’ Light Shine
Imagine a city which is in total darkness without any source of light. Imagine walking along the pavement or being driven in a car without any street lights as you try to fnd your way home. How would that make you feel? Scared, probably!
During the summer, I stayed in a bell tent with my family in the middle of a feld on a farm. It was very exciting! However, during the night one of my children needed to go to the toilet. It was very dark and all we had was a torch. Thankfully, our little torch gave out so much light that we were able to fnd our way there and back safely.
In this week’s Bible cartoon Jesus says, ‘I am the light of the world’. That was a really big statement to make and the Pharisees didn’t like it! So when Jesus was challenged about this he explained that he was sent by his Father –God. Jesus described himself as a light to explain that he can show us the best way to live. Just like my torch helped us, Jesus’ light means we can see our way through the darkness of this world.
During this week, you will probably see Halloween products everywhere and plenty of pumpkins too. Instead of carving scary faces into a pumpkin, maybe this year you could get creative with your pumpkin to shine the light of Jesus in your community. Try carving Jesus’ name, a cross or a fsh symbol and display your pumpkin outside your home. Then more people will know about Jesus’ light!

Bumper Bible Breakdown
Did you know the Bible isn’t one big book? It’s actually 66 books put together to tell one big story of God’s great love. Join us as we look at each Bible book and discover why God made the world, what went wrong and how in the end God saved the world through his son, Jesus.
What is a Psalm?
Have you got a Bible in your home? If you have, crack it open halfway through. There’s a good possibility that you’ve just opened it in a book called Psalms!
The word psalm is a funny one, isn’t it? At frst glance, it looks like someone’s spelt the word ‘palm’ wrong. However, a psalm is actually a real thing! It’s a poem or prayer that was written to be sung to worship God. The book of Psalms contains 150 psalms split into fve sections. These psalms weren’t all written by the same person. A lot of them were written by King David and a couple were written by his son, King Solomon. One of the psalms was even written by Moses!
Although the psalms were written by lots of people, they were gathered together to share a powerful message. We’ll uncover exactly what that message is over the next few weeks.

Optical illusions use colour, light or patterns to confuse our brains – that means the illusions look different to what is actually there.
Move your eyes quickly over this pattern of pebbles. Do the pebbles look like they’re rippling? They’re not really moving, it’s just a trick. Some people believe that our brains misinterpret movements in our eyes for movements in the pattern.

If you haven’t watched The Lion King, then you’re missing out! You might have seen the flm that came out in 2019, but there’s also an older flm that is ridiculously roar-some fun. It was released in 1994, which means that this year is its 30th birthday! Happy birthday, Lion King!
To celebrate such a big occasion, we’re giving you the opportunity to win your very own Lion King cuddly toy! There are four different characters from the flm to collect. So you could win a cheeky meerkat called Timon, or you could win Timon’s best friend – a smelly warthog called Pumbaa. You could win Mufasa, the powerful lion king of the Pride Lands, or you could win Mufasa’s son, Simba – the character that The Lion King is all about!
For your opportunity to win a Lion King soft toy, answer the question below and email your full name, age, address and answer to kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk. John 8:12 ( New International Version)
Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world.
Living a healthy and an active lifestyle and caring for your physical, mental and spiritual well-being.
Sharing Light Throughout The Year
The light that Jesus brings is a bit like the Sun. Just like the Sun is in the sky every single day, the light of Jesus never goes away. It’s with us every single day of our lives. It’s such an amazing thing, so we should share that light with other people all year long, not just around Halloween.
The Bible Says…
‘You should be a light for other people. Live so that they will see the good things you do. Live so that they will praise your Father in Heaven’ (Matthew 5:16, International Children’s Bible).
Because we have the light of Jesus helping us, we should help other people too! We should be a light for them!
We can do that by…
…Doing Good Things
That’s what Matthew tells us to do in the Bible verse above! You might feel like a good thing is something that makes you happy, such as eating way too many biscuits before bedtime.
However, the Bible tells us that a good thing is…
1. An action that shows love to other people! Jesus said that one of the most important things we should do is love everyone.
2. Something that helps people to see how brilliant God is! When you show love to others, you’re showing them how much God loves them too.
I Feel Fantastic!
Doing good things might make you feel like a superhero. You might think that everybody should thank you for being such a good person. If that’s what you think doing good things is about, then STOP!
Sharing the light of Jesus isn’t about feeling like an amazing person. It’s all about showing love because Jesus loves you. Matthew 6 tells us that we should do good things even when other people don’t know that we’re doing them!
A Good Deeds Guide
Here’s a guide for how you can share the light of Jesus at school, at home and with people you don’t even know!
Share the Light at School
During playtime, speak to kids who might feel left out! Invite them to join in with whatever game you’re playing.
If a friend is feeling sad, don’t ignore them until they cheer up! Show them how much you love them by sitting with them and trying to help them feel better.
If you’re working in a group during a lesson, listen to everybody’s ideas! Show your classmates that you care about what they have to say.
When you play sports at school, be a good sportsperson. That means playing fairly and not cheating. It also means being kind to the other side if you win and not kicking up a fuss if you lose!
Invite a friend to come to your church so that they can get to know Jesus better. You could also give them a copy of Kids Alive!
Share the Light at Home
Help your parents or carers with chores around the home, such as doing the washing up.
If you have siblings, show love to them! You could talk to them about their day or help them with their homework.
When you feel yourself getting angry at a parent, carer or sibling, take a deep breath. Instead of shouting at them, choose to show the love of Jesus!
Share the Light with Strangers
When you’re out and about, hold the door open for people behind you!
If you get pocket money, you could put aside a bit of that money every single week to donate to a charity such as The Salvation Army.
With the help of your parents or carers, you could donate food to a food bank. This will show the light of Jesus to people who don’t have much to eat.
For more ideas for how you can share the light of Jesus this Halloween, check out page 3.
Don’t just share the light around Halloween, share it every single day!
