here’s a new flock on the block! Get ready to meet a funny, feathered family as they go on a holiday with a difference. Migration stars the Mallard family, who are in a bit of a pickle. Dad, Mack, is happy to stay safe with his family paddling around their New England pond for ever. However, mum, Pam, is a duck with a dream. She’s eager to shake things up, ruffle some feathers and show their kids, Dax and Gwen, the whole wide world. So when a migrating duck family lands in their pond with thrilling tales of far-flung places, Pam persuades Mack to embark on a family trip to tropical Jamaica. It’s time to see what else life has to offer. As the Mallards make their way south for the winter, their plans quickly go wrong and they end up in busy New York City! Despite the mishap, the Mallard family soon find themselves expanding their horizons, opening themselves up to new friends and learning more about each other – and themselves – than ever before.
I’ve just been watching the trailer for Migration and I started thinking about whether I’m a Mack or a Pam. Pam is desperate for adventure, whereas Mack is happy to stay safe at home. I came to the conclusion I’m definitely a Mack! Although I like the idea of doing new things or seeing new places, I’m more of a ‘home bird’ – most comfortable with my family at home. It can be scary to do things that make us feel uncomfortable – whether that’s exploring new places, making new friends, starting a new hobby or telling people how we’re feeling. Despite that, it’s good for us to push ourselves a little sometimes, because as Pam says to Mack in Migration, ‘It’s scary, but worth it!’ The awesome thing is we can ask Jesus to be with us when we’re stepping out of our comfort zone. With him by our side, we can face anything!

Read the comment below about life in God’s Kingdom
Can Earth Look Like Heaven? asks Kat Whitmore
I
f you were queen or king for a month, what would you do? What rules would you create? What would you want life to be like for the people living in your kingdom? You may have learnt about different kings and queens at school. The character of the king or queen can seriously change what it’s like living in their kingdom. Would you rather live in King Henry VIII’s kingdom or Queen Elizabeth II’s? God has a kingdom too. We sometimes think about God’s Kingdom being Heaven, but actually it’s anywhere that God is seen as being in charge. If we follow God, then we are in his kingdom right now! So what is life like in God’s Kingdom? It depends
on God’s character. If we believe that God is loving, fair and powerful, then people in his kingdom will feel loved, safe and hopeful. One important thing about God’s Kingdom is that there is space for everyone. No one needs to be left out. So in our churches and in our lives, if God is in charge, everyone will be welcome and included. When Jesus taught us how to pray, he said that we should pray for earth to look more like God’s Kingdom. God can make that happen but I believe God wants us to make it happen too. By including and welcoming others, we are making the world more like God wants it to be. Isn’t it amazing that normal people like you and I can show the world what God’s Kingdom is like?

Optical illusions use colour, light or patterns to confuse our brains – that means the illusions look different to what is actually there.
What happens to the pattern on the left as you read this sentence? Do the swirls you can see out of the corner of your eye start to move? This is a motion illusion – the pattern confuses your eyes so much that they think it’s moving!

National Storytelling Week Stories are incredible for so many reasons and there’s no better time to celebrate the power of sharing stories than this week, because National Storytelling Week is taking place from 27 January to 4 February.
Super Skills Throughout history people have shared stories with each other. Stories can teach us about the world, allow us to step into someone else’s shoes, help us to learn about key morals, inspire us and relax us. They’re also great for improving literacy skills.
Sharing stories can help us learn new words, develop listening skills and improve language skills. It can also increase our imagination, help us express feelings and build our confidence. On top of all that, it’s a fab way to bond with siblings, parents, carers or other family members.
Get Involved There are loads of really fun ways to get involved with National Storytelling Week. Here are some ideas:
Library Time Take a trip to your local library and seek out some new stories! You could also see if they have any storytelling events taking place that you can attend.
12 KA - p12-13 - 27 January.indd 1
19/01/2024 11:15
Dream Up a World Put a pen down on paper and make up your own story (of course you can also type it on a computer or tablet). All you need is your imagination. You can dream up new worlds inspired by the everyday objects around you. Perhaps a favourite cuddly toy goes on unbelievable adventures while you sleep or a pair of old shoes gives you magical powers when you wear them. The possibilities are endless! Or if you don’t fancy writing a story, how about a poem or a play? You could also read it aloud or act it out for your family.
Read All About It Write a news report or interview a family member about their life. You could find out about their childhood, what adventures they went on, their favourite family recipes or the things they love most. You could also put it together like a proper newspaper – include photos and come up with your own headlines.
Pukka Podcasting Record a podcast. You could interview a family member, share a review of your favourite book or film, create a feature on the country your ancestors came from or share stories of incredible people from history. Check out wordsforlife.org.uk/activities/how-to-make-your-own-podcast for top tips on making your own podcast.
Super Scrapbook Make a family scrapbook. Draw pictures of yourself and your family, stick in photos or write down favourite recipes or special memories. You could also include information about the other languages you speak or the cultures that different family members come from. It’s a great way to get down on paper the lives and experiences that make up your family. To help you, there’s a template at wordsforlife.org.uk/activities/my-storytelling-scrapbook that you can download and print.
You can find out more about National Storytelling Week at literacytrust.org.uk/resources/national-storytelling-week. There are loads of ideas and resources for celebrating National Storytelling Week at school or at home.
If you’d like to send a story or poem to ‘Kids Alive!’ we’d love to read it! Just pop it in an email and send it to ‘kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk’.

What a jolly-looking Father Christmas Colouring! It was sent to us by Isla, age 11. She’s coloured it in with loads of festive flair!
Zhara, age 12, sent us this awesome Father Christmas Colouring. We quite like the new look she’s given him and we’re sure Mr C would agree that it’s a nice change!
Festive Fun at Maidstone At Maidstone Salvation Army’s all-age nativity service people could choose whatever nativity character they wanted to be. Some came already dressed for their part, while others were given costumes on arrival. The service was loads of fun. There were conversations between an angel and a character who wanted to be a leopard, but was meant to be a shepherd and a narrator angel who needed reading lessons (she thought baby Jesus was born in a manager!). Alongside the fun, there was also a reminder that Jesus was born in a stable because he wanted to be friends with normal people, such as the shepherds and us, rather than spending his time in a big palace. After the service, the young people stayed at the Salvation Army hall for a McDonald’s lunch and a party. They also had time to finish off their Advent wreaths and make icing snowmen and angels.
