IHalloween is coming on Tuesday (31 October). Lots of people like Halloween, but the Kids Alive! team would much rather celebrate the things that are good in our world. Would you like to join us?
Jesus tells us in the Bible that he is the Light of the World (John 8:12) and that means he will guide and protect us through any dark or scary situations. The Bible also tells us in Matthew 5:14–16 that as Christians we can be lights to others too. Through our kind, helpful or loving words or actions, they will know we’re followers of Jesus.
So instead of going trick-or-treating, how about giving small gifts or baked goods to your neighbours with a note? Or you could send a card to a friend; give out copies of this week’s Kids Alive! spread some cheer by singing happy songs or organise a light party for your school friends.
You could also paint a colourful picture to put up in your window or carve a cross or heart shape into a pumpkin, so that others who pass your home know you’re letting your light shine this Halloween!
I’m a bit of a scaredy-cat, readers, so all this dressing up in ghoulish costumes for Halloween isn’t really for me. Having said that, I will have a stash of goodies (including a bundle of this week’s Kids Alive!) ready for any trick-or-treaters who do call at our house.
While I would never encourage our readers to roam the streets knocking on strangers’ doors, asking for sweets, what I would say is: if you really can’t resist going trick-or-treating please do it safely. Make sure you’re with a grown-up, only visit the homes of people you know, never enter anyone’s house, don’t frighten people and always be polite!
Of course, what I would encourage our readers to do is to go to a light or glow party instead – they’re really fun Halloween alternatives! Find out if there’s one going on near you, join in the fun and let your light shine!
READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT FOLLOWING JESUS’ EXAMPLE BY BEING KIND TO OTHERS
Be More Like Jesus
I reckon this week’s Bible story is easy to understand. Jesus loves everyone, no matter who they are or what they’ve done. Sorted! There’s no need for you to read any more of this article.
But hold on a minute! Matthew and the woman who appear in this week’s cartoon Bible story are bad people. Matthew’s a lying, thieving, greedy individual who doesn’t deserve anyone being nice to him, let alone the Son of God. As for the woman, well, the Bible doesn’t say what she did wrong, but she’s a sinner all right – the Pharisees say so! And there’s the problem –very quickly I’ve become like the Pharisees in the Bible by judging others.
Well, just as Jesus had an answer for the Pharisees,
says Justin Reeves
he’s got an answer for me. Matthew and the woman are exactly the kind of people who need Jesus. People like them, who were hated by everyone else, needed to be loved, cared for, forgiven and healed just as much as, if not more than, anyone else.
So here’s the challenge for us – as Christians we’re supposed to be like Jesus. That means being kind to everyone, even people who we might think don’t deserve it. When Jesus showed people that he cared about them, their lives were changed in amazing ways. Matthew and the woman became Jesus’ followers and did their best to live the way he showed them. Is there someone you should be Jesus to? Your kind actions could encourage others to follow Jesus too.

The cosmos or universe is so enormous and stupendous it’s mind-boggling! Here are some facts about space that are … well, cosmic!
First People on the Moon
This week’s That’s Cosmic! is super exciting, because it’s all about the frst people to set foot on the Moon.
On 16 July 1969, Neil Armstrong, Edwin ‘Buzz’ Aldrin and Michael Collins blasted off on board Apollo 11 and headed towards the Moon.
Four days later, on 20 July, Neil Armstrong stepped from the Eagle lunar module on to the Moon saying, ‘That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.’
Armstrong was joined by Buzz Aldrin who read from a plaque that stated ‘We came in peace for all mankind’, before both astronauts planted the United States fag in the ground. The pair spent more than two hours collecting Moon rocks and dust. After reboarding Eagle they blasted off to rejoin Michael Collins who had been orbiting the Moon on board the Columbia command module waiting to take Armstrong and Aldrin back to Earth. The trio splashed down safely in the Pacifc Ocean on 24 July.

From Darkness to Light
Lots of people see Halloween as harmless fun, but many Christians believe that it’s not a good idea to celebrate things that are dark and scary. If you’re not sure what you think, here’s a bit more information about the history of Halloween.
Samhain
The ancient Celtic festival of Samhain was celebrated in Britain a long time ago. It marked the end of the long, light summer days and the beginning of darker, winter nights. At this time, some people believed that the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead were more open. Because of this, they thought that ghosts of dead people could return to Earth. The celebrations included wearing scary costumes and creating huge bonfres as a way of scaring away any nasty spirits.
Saints and Souls
Bible Bit
Many people don’t like Halloween because it’s dark and scary. They prefer to focus on light and life, just like it says in Romans 13:12 – ‘We must stop behaving as people do in the dark and be ready to live in the light’ (CEV).
Did you know 1 November is a special day in the Christian calendar?
Bible Bit
If you read John 8:12, you’ll see that Christians don’t need scary costumes or bonfres. Jesus said, ‘I am the light for the world. Follow me and you won’t be walking in the dark.’ (Contemporary English Version). So with Jesus, there’s nothing to fear.
It’s All Saints’ Day –a celebration of all the saints who died because of their Christian beliefs. All Saints’ Day was also known as All Hallows’ Day, which makes 31 October, All Hallows’ Eve. That’s where the name Halloween comes from! The Church also made 2 November All Souls’ Day – a time to remember people who have died.
Bible Bit
Rather than trick-or-treating, isn’t it a much nicer idea to do kind things for others? Some Christians deliver small gifts to neighbours at Halloween or give away copies of Kids Alive! Jesus would like this idea, because in Matthew 5:16 he said Christians should ‘Make your light shine, so others will see the good you do and will praise your Father in Heaven’ (CEV).
You’ve probably heard of trick-or-treating, but did you know that a long time ago children would visit houses and ask for gifts or soul cakes? This was known as souling. In other places, such as Scotland, there were similar traditions called guising. In return for gifts, the children would pray for the family’s dead relatives, sing or recite poetry. Many people believe this is how trick-or-treating began.
Trick or Treat Pumpkin Lanterns
Putting a light in a carved pumpkin is another tradition from the British Isles. A long time ago in Ireland, people used to carve a scary face into a turnip to frighten spirits away.
Share and Care
If you haven’t already checked out page 3, head there to read our top tips about Halloween alternatives. Maybe you could share this issue with a trick-or-treater who calls at your house next Tuesday.
When many Irish people moved to America, they took traditions, such as this, with them. It was soon discovered that pumpkins were much easier to carve, and they replaced the traditional turnips. Halloween was featured more and more in American TV programmes, books and movies, and it’s slowly become more popular in the United Kingdom too.
Bible Bit
It might seem like everyone is celebrating Halloween and you don’t want to be different. However, being brave enough to tell people what you believe is a fantastic thing and you can always rely on Jesus to help you. As it says in Philippians 4:13, ‘Christ gives me the strength to face anything’ (CEV).

The young people at Maidstone Salvation Army had great fun at their corps anniversary (a celebration of The Salvation Army being in Maidstone for 141 years!). The theme for the celebrations was Living Life Centred on the Rock of Jesus. The kids all received books to encourage them to live life Jesus’ way, before building Lego houses on rock and sand. After the houses were built the kids poured water on to them to create a storm, watching one collapse and one stay standing. Just like Jesus’ story in the Bible (Matthew 7:24–27).
