WORLD SPACE WEEK WE'RE UP IN SPACE FOR…
T his week is sure to be out-of-this-world, because it’s World Space Week! This epic week of space-related fun is taking place from 4 to 10 October and it’s a worldwide celebration of space science and technology, and the difference they make to our lives.
Many places will be holding space-themed events during the week. There’s no better time to take a trip to the National Space Centre in Leicester or see if a museum or planetarium near you is holding a special space event. You can also celebrate at home. If you fancy getting creative, why not try to build your own spacecraft or make some biscuits that look like planets? You could also watch a space-themed lm, go stargazing, or dress up like an astronaut or space scientist! The theme for this year is Space and Entrepreneurship. One of the biggest aims for World Space Week organisers is inspiring kids to study STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects at school. This will hopefully lead more people into spacerelated careers so they can make a difference in years to come. The space industry is growing, so it’s a great time for future entrepreneurs to reach for the stars!
For more information about World Space Week in the UK visit bis-space.com/events/wsw
When I was really young we used to sing a song in Sunday school that went: ‘In space rockets soon, we’ll zoom to the Moon. Before we get there, our hearts will prepare to walk with the Lord on Earth where he trod and follow wherever he leads.’
That was almost 40 years ago and we’re still not zooming to the Moon in space rockets. However, recently lots of really rich people have paid piles of money to be able to travel to space. Maybe by the time you’ve grown up space travel will be cheaper and you can be an astronaut. Wouldn’t that be amazing?
Whatever you want to be when you’re older, it’s important to make sure your heart’s in tune with Jesus and to keep him at the centre of everything you do. When you choose to follow Jesus, he’ll lead you to do amazing things!

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT LISTENING TO GOD
Always Tell the Truth says Ibukun Baku
Have you ever had to tell the truth when you knew it could make another person angry or sad? How did you feel?
In situations like that, I’ve often felt nervous and scared. But telling the truth is always the right thing to do even when it feels hard. In this week’s Bible cartoon story, Samuel bravely tells the truth and shares a dif cult message.
Samuel lived in the Temple with Eli the priest because his mother had made a promise to God. She said that if God blessed her with a son, then he would grow up to serve the Lord. One night, as Samuel slept, he heard someone calling his name. Samuel thought it was Eli, but when Eli realised that
it was actually God, he told Samuel to say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’ God wanted Samuel to let Eli know that he was angry with him and his family because they hadn’t treated God with respect or been a good example to the people. Can you think of a time when you’ve heard God talking to you? God doesn’t always speak in a voice like he did with Samuel, but he does speak to us through his words in the Bible and through the Holy Spirit. As you continue to learn about Jesus and understand how he wants you to live, look out for moments when Jesus may want you to share his words with others. Particularly with those who may not be making the best choices.
True or False
Read the statements below and put a tick in the box if it’s true or a cross if it’s false. Clue – 1 Samuel 3.
1 The Lord spoke to lots of people during the time that Samuel was a child.
2 Samuel went to Eli three times before listening to God.
3 Samuel was afraid to tell Eli God’s message.
4 Eli was angry when he heard the message.
5 Samuel grew up to be a great prophet.

The cosmos or universe is so enormous and stupendous it’s mind-boggling! Here are some facts about space that are … well, cosmic!
First woman in Space
Meet Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova – the rst woman in space. On 16 October 1963, Valentina blasted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan aboard Vostok 6, and orbited Earth 48 times. During her mission, Tereshkova ew within 5km of Vostok 5, piloted by Valery Bykovsky, which had launched just two days before Vostok 6. Valentina and Valery spoke to each other over radios, but neither could con rm seeing the other’s spacecraft as they sped through space.
On 19 June, Tereshkova steered Vostok 6 back into Earth’s atmosphere before parachuting to the ground. A statue of Valentina Tereshkova in Altai Krai, Russia marks the spot where she landed. It was another 19 years before Svetlana Savitskaya, on board Soyuz T-7, became the second woman in space.

The Night Sky What You Need
Have you read about World Space Week on page 3? It’s such an exciting week to be part of, and one of the most fun things you can do is go stargazing. As sunset times get earlier through autumn, it’s easier to get out and see some of the delights in the night sky.
The rst thing you need if you want to go stargazing is a dark, clear sky. The less clouds the better. It’s also a good idea to head away from lights, such as streetlamps, so you can see better. But if you live in a city or town, don’t worry. You can still join in.
You only really need your eyes to see some cool stuff. However, you could also invest in some child-friendly binoculars or astronomy apps for smartphones. These things will help you see more and identify what you’re looking at. Remember to wrap up warm. You could also take camping chairs or a blanket to lie down on while you look to the skies!
Moon and Stars
There’s so much spectacular stuff to see. The most obvious thing is the Moon –you can see that quite easily as long as it’s not cloudy. Why not make a chart tracking the stages of the Moon so you can see how it changes through the month? There are also lots of star patterns that have names. These are called constellations. One of the most famous is The Plough. It’s part of Ursa Major, which means ‘big bear’.
The Planets
It’s also possible to see some planets. Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn can all sometimes be seen in the night sky. They look like bright stars and are in different positions in the sky depending on the time of the month or year.
12
Showers of Stars
Have you ever seen shooting stars stream across the night sky? It’s a spectacular sight! Although we call them shooting stars they’re actually debris left behind by comets.
In October there’s one of the best meteor showers –the Orionid meteor shower. This year it will be active from 2 October to 7 November, but the peak will be 21 to 22 October. That means those dates, and a few days either side, are the best time to try to spot the shower. The meteors in this shower are actually from Halley’s Comet, which can only be seen once every 75–76 years!
Northern Lights
Did you know it’s even possible to see the Aurora Borealis from the United Kingdom? They’re also known as the Northern Lights and are a spectacular display of colours in the night sky. Believe it or not, these lights are actually caused by activity on the surface of the Sun! Solar storms from the Sun’s surface send out clouds of electrically-charged particles. These particles then travel to Earth. Some get trapped in Earth’s atmosphere and basically slam into atoms and molecules from Earth, heat up and start glowing.
The Northern Lights can be seen best closer to the North Pole, but it’s possible to see them across the UK in certain conditions. However, it’s much more likely in areas such as Scotland, North England, North Wales and Northern Ireland.

There are some special areas in the UK that are designated Dark Sky Parks. They’re protected to ensure there’s no light pollution, which makes them excellent for star spotting. Here are some of them if you fancy an extra special adventure.

A Royal Reply
Around the time of the Coronation of King Charles III, the midweek Sunday school at Llanelli Salvation Army held a celebration. The children from 3Ts (Tuesday Teatime Teaching) made crowns and pictures and sent some homemade cards of congratulation to the new king.
During the summer they received a royal reply! There was a lovely letter and card along with a new 50p with King Charles’s head on. Here’s a photo of the children and their special delivery.
Simon, age 6, sent us this awesome Aeroplane Colouring. We love the fact he’s made the plane so bright and colourful. It looks great next to the beautiful blue sky.

You know what you keep saying to me about trying not to be so naughty, Patch?
When I was on the bus yesterday and the ticket collector asked me where I got on…
For some reason he threw me off the bus for being cheeky!
Yes, Norman. Being naughty is not good. Have you been taking my advice?
I have, Patch.
…I simply told him the truth and said that I got on at the front, like everyone else.
