Sputnik 2

On 3 November 1957 Sputnik 2, the second man-made object to orbit ( y around) Earth was launched by the Soviet Union (a collection of countries run by Russia). Sputnik 2 was 4 metres high and cone shaped. It was more advanced in its technology than Sputnik 1. Sputnik 2 had on-board radio transmitters, scienti c instruments and a temperature control system.

Sputnik 2 was the rst spacecraft to carry a living animal. Laika, a small mixed-breed dog who was about 2 years old, was placed in a special area to provide data on how a living organism would survive in space. Laika had enough oxygen to last 10 days, but because of temperature problems she only survived a day or two.
