If you look around your home how many plastic items can you see? Most of us have plenty of plastic food packaging or shampoo bottles lying around. How many of those plastic items will end up in the bin?
Did you know nearly 100 billion pieces of plastic packaging are thrown away by UK households every year? Just 12 per cent of plastic items are recycled in the UK. The Big Plastic Count is an investigation into this plastic crisis, because throwing away this much plastic waste is a big problem for the environment.
From 11–17 March organisers of The Big Plastic Count want families, schools, community groups and businesses to count their plastic waste for a week. After submitting the results online, everyone who takes part can get a personal plastic footprint back. This shows where the plastic they throw away might end up. The investigation will help organisers work out how much plastic the UK is throwing away. Then this evidence will hopefully convince the people that are in charge of the country that they need to fnd ways to get rid of plastic pollution for good!
Find out more about getting involved in The Big Plastic Count at thebigplasticcount.com –you can sign up for a digital pack that includes a Let’s Count Tally Sheet
How much plastic waste does your household throw away?
As a family, we try really hard to recycle as much plastic as possible and we have reusable water bottles, bags and coffee cups. However, I know there’s a lot more that we could be doing to limit the plastic we use. Maybe you feel the same too.
Thinking about the things we use and throw away is especially important for Christians. After all, God has asked us to take care of the world he created for us, hasn’t he? And that world is a pretty spectacular gift, so we should be extra careful with how we treat it.
Taking care of our world is a very important job, but it’s not one we have to do alone. If we all work together we can make big changes happen and taking part in The Big Plastic Count is a great place to start.

New Heart, New You
Something special happened last year. Can you guess what it might be? Here are some clues. There was a big church service, followed by a big celebration, and it happened for the frst time in almost 70 years… That’s right, it was King Charles III’s coronation!
In this week’s Bible story, we see the coronation of Saul, the frst king of Israel. Samuel anoints Saul by pouring oil over his head as a sign of God’s Holy Spirit coming to be with Saul and changing his heart. With the help of the Holy Spirit, Saul could now be a good leader to the people, by trusting God and doing his best to follow him.
Read the comment to the right about being faithful to God J _ Y L _ _ E
Read the comment below about how we can show kindness to others
Almost straight away, the people could see a difference in Saul. He was praising God with the other prophets, something he’d never done before. But this change didn’t last long, as when it was time for Samuel to present him as the new king, Saul lost his courage and hid!
Saul often worried about what others thought of him. Do you worry too? People may not always understand why you’re a Christian but as his friend, Jesus wants you to trust him. How we treat others, the choices we make and how we act in challenging situations all show how we’re responding to God’s love for us.
So, if you feel like you need a bit more courage to live boldly as Jesus’ friend, ask the Holy Spirit for help. He’s always with you and ready to give you a confdent and courageous heart.

Bumper Bible Breakdown
Did you know the Bible isn’t one big book? It’s actually 66 books put together to tell one big story of God’s great love. Join us as we look at each Bible book and discover why God made the world, what went wrong and how in the end God saved the world through his son, Jesus.
People continued to make bad choices as they’d stopped listening to God. They were hurting one another and doing wicked things. It got so bad that God was sad he’d made humans. He could see that people’s hearts were flled with evil thoughts.
So God decided to start over again and told Noah to build an ark. Noah listened and obeyed. When Noah, his family and two of each animal were safely onboard the ark, God let it rain for 40 days and 40 nights. The world was washed clean.
Bum
After the food, Noah made an offering to God and God was pleased. God made a promise to Noah to never food the whole world again and gave the rainbow as a sign of his promise.

British Science Week
Have you ever thought about being a scientist? There’s no better time to explore that idea than this week, because it’s British Science Week from 8–17 March. British Science Week is a 10-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths.
The theme for this year is Time. It’s been 30 years since British Science Week happened for the frst time, so organisers want people to think about the mega milestones that have happened in the world of science during the last 30 years. They should also look to the future and imagine what incredible things might be to come.
Celebration of Science
There are events happening all over the country that you can get involved with. You can nd a British Science Week event happening near you at sciencelive.net/whats-on Or it’s the perfect time to take a trip to an observatory or science museum this week –there are plenty across the UK so fnd out where your nearest one is.
Exciting Experiments
If you visit britishscienceweek.org you can also download the Primary Pack resources. These include all sorts of awesome activities and exciting experiments you can get stuck into, such as making your own pendulum timer, designing a farm of the future and exploring the life cycle of a frog using a game. You can do the activities at home with your family or tell your teacher so your whole class can join in the fun.
Poster Competition
There’s also a British Science Week poster competition to enter. Create a poster showing how a certain type of technology has changed over time or show the advancement of time-telling technology itself – from sundials to digital clocks. Or you can create a poster that shows how you think the world might look in years to come. The closing time is 6pm on Thursday 28 March and all the details for entering are on the British Science Week website.
