The Rugby World Cup kicked off with a bang yesterday (8 September)! Hosts France went up against three-time winners New Zealand. In case you’re not rugby mad, they’re two of the favourites to win the whole tournament. The excitement won’t end there either. In total there are 48 matches being played, ending with the nal on 28 October. Teams from all over the world will be competing to be in that nal, including England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. A European nation has only won the Rugby World Cup once, when England won in 2003. England haven’t been looking at the top of their game recently. Instead, could it be current Six Nations holders, Ireland, that get their name on the trophy for the rst time? With tough opponents like South Africa, New Zealand and Australia in the mix, it’ll take something special. Game on!
Here are the details of some of the opening matches this weekend:
9 September
Ireland v Romania (2.30pm)
England v Argentina (8pm)
10 September
South Africa v Scotland (4.45pm)
Wales v Fiji (8pm)
Coverage of the Rugby World Cup will be shown on ITV in the UK. For more information and a list of fixtures, visit rugbyworldcup.com
So far this year we’ve enjoyed several world cups – the women’s T20, netball, women’s football and we still have the Men’s Cricket World Cup to come. Right now it’s rugby’s turn to enjoy a terrifc tournament.
Whatever the sport, there’s something very special about a world cup. I wonder if that’s because most of them only come around every four years. Maybe it has more to do with people from all over the world joining together to enjoy something they love. Perhaps it’s a mixture of both.
One of the things I love about my church is we all originate from different parts of the world and different places in the United Kingdom. We’re from different backgrounds, have different stories to tell and we’re at different stages in our friendships with Jesus. But every Sunday we get together to do something really special – celebrate Jesus and learn more about him.

M
alachi Justin was ve years old when he sent his tooth fairy money to The Salvation Army, asking them to buy a house for someone without one. Five years later, his dream came true when The Salvation Army along with other charities opened Malachi Place – a safe home for people experiencing homelessness. God used Malachi’s kindness to make a big difference to the community around him.
In this week’s Bible cartoon, God chose Gideon to make a difference, but Gideon didn’t believe he could. When the angel called him a mighty warrior, Gideon claimed he came from the weakest family … and he was the weakest person in his family!
Fortunately, God knows each of us very well. He knows what gifts and talents we have and the
difference we can make if we just believe in ourselves. Best of all, God promises to be with us and with him by our sides anything is possible. In Gideon’s story we see God patiently reassuring him as he stops doubting and becomes brave.
What difference can you make in your community? Are you generous like Malachi? Maybe you can use your talents to raise money for a local cause. Perhaps you’re good at encouraging people? Why not make a point of saying positive things to others this week. If you’re good at explaining things, look out for someone who’s struggling at school and spend some time helping them to understand. God uses everyone to make a difference and that means he can use you too.

The cosmos or universe is so enormous and stupendous it’s mind-boggling! Here are some facts about space that are … well, cosmic! ham
THE FIRST CHIMP IN SPACE
Meet Ham, the rst chimpanzee to go into space. It seems cruel to send animals into space and it’s probably something that NASA wouldn’t do now. However, at the time, it was what space agencies did to try to work out whether space travel might be safe for people. Chimpanzees and other apes were used because they are so similar to humans.
So, on 31 January 1961, Ham found himself strapped into a Mercury space capsule and red into space aboard NASA’s Redstone 2 launch rocket. Ham didn’t y all the way around Earth, and this ight lasted just 16 minutes and 39 seconds, travelling 422 miles at a height of up to 157 miles. Ham made it safely back to Earth with no injuries other than a bruised nose. Following his adventure into space, Ham went on to live for another 22 years.

Roald Dahl Day
Are you a fan of Roald Dahl’s books? He wrote so many amazing ones – from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The BFG to they’re all phizz-whizzing! (That’s a word Roald Dahl made up meaning excellent!)
With Roald Dahl having so many great stories and loads of fans around the world, it’s no surprise that he also has a special celebration every September. Schools, charities, libraries and all sorts of other groups will be celebrating Roald Dahl Day on 13 September, which was Roald’s birthday.
Take Part!
There are loads of ways to get involved with the celebration. You could dress up as a Roald Dahl character, read one of your favourite Roald Dahl books, draw some Quentin Blake-style illustrations, watch Matilda the Musical on Net ix or visit the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre in Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire. You could even challenge yourself to read all of Roald Dahl’s books by Roald Dahl Day 2024!
Start a Story
Another fantastic way to honour Roald Dahl on his special day would be to write a story yourself. Creative writing is a fantastic way to use your imagination, make sense of the world and develop your vocabulary and comprehension skills. Believe it or not, writing and telling stories will even help you in other subjects at school. It’s also super fun, of course!
Make a Plan
Although you can start writing a story straight away and see what happens, some people like to make a plan before they start writing. You could grab yourself a nice notepad and make it your story planner, but any paper will do.
a healthy and an active lifestyle and caring for your physical, mental and spiritual well-being.
12
Story Mountain
Have you ever heard of a story mountain? It’s a way to organise the plot or structure of a story. Most stories have simple structures, which is explained below.
3
Problem
Adding in a problem or con ict gives your main character something to tackle or overcome. This is the top of the story mountain.
Building up 2
As you head up the mountain you build up the plot.
1
Opening
This is the foot of the mountain and it’s where you introduce your main character.
4
Resolution
On the way down the mountain your main character has to deal with the problem and solve it.
Ending 5
At the bottom of the mountain is the ending. This is where everything is solved, but it doesn’t mean you can’t be creative. How about adding an unexpected twist?
More Top Tips Story Setting
When you’re planning your story think about where and when your story will be set. This can be things such as whether it’s during the daytime or at night, at the beach or in the park, in summer or winter. It could even be whether it’s set in the past, present or future.
? ? ? ?
Creating Characters
Great stories have great characters. When you’re creating your characters ask yourself some questions. What’s their name? How old are they? What are they feeling? What things do they like to do? Building a full picture of your character in your head will help you write their story better.
Share Your Stories
You can write your stories just for yourself, but sharing stories is also great fun. Show your creations to parents, carers, siblings, grandparents, teachers, friends or whoever else you want and see what people think of them.
Kids Alive! team would also like to see what cool creations you come up with. You can email them to us at kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk
