here are all kinds of amazing pets – dogs, cats, birds, hamsters, bunnies and fish, to name just a few. Some people even own pet lizards, snakes or insects! Whether you own a pet that woofs, miaows or hisses, or swims, hops or slithers, it’s time to take part in National Pet Month. Between 1 April and 10 May, animal lovers will be celebrating life with pets and learning about good pet ownership. Pets can help make the world feel a bit brighter, but it’s super-important to care for them properly too, by feeding them a well-balanced diet, cleaning up after them or grooming and exercising them. Because of coronavirus people are being encouraged to stay at home as much as possible. Your pets will love having you home more, but it’s important to know how to safely care for yourselves and them. You can still pet and play with your pets, but always wash your hands before and after touching them or their food, toys and bedding. Also, don’t kiss them, try not to let them lick you and make sure you have enough pet food. If you or your family aren’t ill, you can still take your dog for a walk, as long as you stay two metres away from others. For more info visit nationalpetmonth.org.uk

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT GOD’S GUIDELINES FOR LIFE

Spot the Difference

C

an I tell you a secret, alive kids? OK, here goes: a couple of years ago I lost a lot of weight. To be honest, it’s not a secret at all – at the time I spoke to loads of people about it. I didn’t run around bragging about it – people just asked. That’s because they couldn’t miss the fact that I looked different. So, what did I do? I joined a club that has guidelines on how to eat healthily. Once a week I met with a bunch of other people and we chatted about any unhealthy food we were struggling to resist. We also shared our top tips on what healthy food to enjoy instead. Nobody forced me to do anything – all I did was read the guidelines, stick to the plan, listen to other people and follow some advice. Hey presto, I became slimmer,

by Justin Reeves

healthier and happier! So what has this got to do with this week’s cartoon Bible story? Well, Psalm 119:9–16 is like a guide to living a good life. All we have to do is read the guidelines we find in the Bible and do what they say – it can help to listen to other Christians and follow their advice too. Easy, eh? Not always, but with God’s help we can do it. And when we do, people will notice a difference in us and probably ask us questions. Then we can explain how our lives have changed for the better since choosing to follow God’s guidelines. Go on, see if you can make a difference. Read your Bible and ask God to help you to live a good life.

I PROMISE…

Below is part of the promise that children make when they choose to become junior soldiers in The Salvation Army. Write the words listed in the correct place to complete the junior soldiers promise.

I know that _ _ _ _ _ is my _ _ _ _ _ _ _ from sin. I have asked him to _ _ _ _ _ _ _ my sins, and I will trust him to keep me _ _ _ _. Selected verses from

Psalm 29

Praise the Lord, you heavenly angels! Praise the Lord’s glory and power. Praise the Lord and honour his name! Worship the Lord in all his holy beauty. The Lord’s voice can be heard over the sea. The voice of our glorious Lord God is like thunder over the great ocean. The Lord’s voice is powerful. It shows the Lord’s glory. The Lord’s voice cuts the air with flashes of lightning. The Lord’s voice shakes the desert. In his temple everyone shouts, ‘Glory to God!’

The Bible book of Psalms is a collection of songs that help us to tell God how we’re feeling – whether we’re happy, excited, worried or sad. There are psalms praising and thanking God, asking for his help and reminding us that, no matter what, we can always trust him. So however you’re feeling, dig in! There’s sure to be a psalm that’s just right for you.

Describing God is a really tricky task. After all, how do you describe someone who created the entire universe? But that’s exactly why this psalm encourages us to praise him. God deserves our praise because he’s the biggest, strongest, most powerful presence in the universe and yet he’s also the kindest, most generous being there is. So, alive kids, why don’t you give God some praise today?

(Easy-to-Read Version)

Dear God,

We can never really understand just how incredible and amazing you are, but I praise you because you’re an awesome God.

Amen.

The coxswain of the winning pair of rowers in the 1900 Olympics was thought to be between 7 and 10 years old! He was from France, but no one knows his name or exact age. The coxswain (or cox) steers the boat and helps the rowers with their rowing rhythm. The youngest Olympian cox since 1900 was 11-year-old Carlos Front, who steered the men’s eight for Spain in 1992. Coxswains now have to weigh a minimum of 55 kilograms.

What is plastic? £ £1100

Plastic is a man-made material that is really useful. Making things from plastic is really popular because there are lots of different types and it can be made into many shapes, sizes and colours. If you look around your home or school you’ll see all sorts of things that are made out of plastic. Do you have a games console? It’ll be made from plastic. Do you have a pencil case? It’s probably made from plastic. Even the new £5 and £10 notes are made from plastic!

£1020

£ £20

Why is plastic £5 a problem? The problem with plastic is that it lasts for hundreds of years. That means if we just chuck it in the bin then it will sit in landfill sites for hundreds of years, filling them up and meaning space will eventually run out.

£5 £20

£5

Also, lots of plastic waste seems to end up in places it shouldn’t, such as oceans. Apart from making our watery world look horrible, it also massively impacts the wildlife that lives there. Fish and birds can accidentally eat or get stuck in bits of plastic, and these things are causing thousands and thousands of animals to die every year.

So while using plastic for some things is useful, too much of it causes a lot of problems. Single-use plastics (any plastic we use once and then throw away) are the worst. These include things such as water bottles, crisp packets, plastic cutlery, straws and carrier bags.

£20

Can’t we just recycle? Recycling plastic items is great, because it means they can be used to make other things. However, not all plastics can be recycled and in the UK we’re producing more plastic recycling than we can deal with. So while we should always recycle all the plastic we can, we should also try to reduce how much we use.

What is zero waste? Zero waste means changing the way we live to try to limit the amount of rubbish we’re throwing away and sending to landfill or even to be recycled. Lots of ‘zero wasters’ focus on cutting down on plastic items, because it can be so damaging to the environment. Obviously going completely zero waste is quite tough, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make changes to try to do your bit, even if they’re only small.

Your Journey

Here are some ideas of ways you and your family can start a journey to zero waste by reducing plastic use in your home. Use bars of soap, shampoo and conditioner rather than plastic bottles.

Avoid buying plastic water bottles. Instead use reusable bottles and fill them up with tap water.

When eating out say no to straws, especially plastic ones.

Do your parents or guardians like buying takeaway coffee? These cups can’t be recycled because of the waterproof lining, so ask them to buy a reusable coffee cup. Lots of coffee chains offer rewards for bringing your own cup.

If your family uses lots of wipes or cotton wool (yes they have plastic in them!) look for alternatives. Sponges for cleaning and reusable fabric face pads or flannels are options.

Glitter looks lovely, but most glitter is made of plastic, so when it gets washed down plugholes it eventually enters rivers or the sea. These small particles of plastic are called microplastics and experts say they’re dangerous for wildlife. Look for other ways to add sparkle to your creations that won’t damage the environment.

Check out next week’s KA! World for more information about going zero waste.

There have been some lovely things happening at Bognor Regis Salvation Army. During the young people’s anniversary celebrations children were so excited to receive their prizes that they started reading their books straight away! Also, when Jayden was made a junior soldier, another junior soldier, Matt, offered to support him and be his prayer partner rather than Jayden being paired with a grown-up. Great work!
