“Courage is not simply the opposite of fear; it is the audacity to act in
pursuit of a cause you believe in, regardless of fear,” said Thuli Madonsela,
a human rights lawyer and former Public Protector of South Africa, delivering
the inaugural Salzburg Global Lecture.
The Lecture was established on the occasion of Salzburg Global Seminar’s
70th Anniversary Gala Board of Directors Weekend, centered around the
theme of courage. In the midst of political upheaval and social fragmentation
across the world, Salzburg Global chose its theme in recognition of the
intensified need for courage – the courage to speak truth to power, to build
coalitions for change and to see through hard choices.
