President’s message Ten new members attended the branch mentoring weekend in June.
T
he mentoring weekend in June was a huge success. Ten new members attended to gain some extra knowledge to nail that first sambar deer. The branch is continuing to grow with membership at its highest in the branch’s history, and is climbing at a rapid rate, and we have more people than ever coming along to events and supporting the branch. This has been made possible through the hard effort of everyone involved with ADA Central Vic branch who puts in (committee and general members all included), you know who you all are. In June we held our AGM where a number of key committee members stepped back to allow new blood into the committee and move the branch forward. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Ern Addington on behalf of the whole branch who stepped down as president and has really been the backbone of the branch during his presidency. The branch would not be where it is today without him and the efforts he has put into it. Now a new younger looking committee has taken over the
reins with the guidance of the more experienced members to help with the transition and show us young guys the right way to go. I thank the new committee who put their hand up to join me in representing the branch to hold up what has been built and keep moving forward. The mentoring weekend provided slightly better weather this year making for a more comfortable camp. Experienced hunters Ern Addington, Peter Jorgensen, Len (Knocker) Trewehlan and Matt King (along with Kelvin Katti along the side lines providing his usual witty comments and stories) showed the group of 10 (of all ages) a few things about hunting sambar to help them along with their hunting. The hound hunting test also was a big success with a number of members sitting the test and passing,

some without having done any study at all! I haven’t heard of anyone failing so good luck to you all, and if you wish to get onto a hunt with a hound team contact Craig Hill (who presented to the branch earlier in the year on hound hunting) through Rod Reddish he is continuously taking out new hunters and showing them what it’s all about. We have two big events left for the year, the Branch Family Camp and the Central Vic Christmas Party/ Presentation Night at the Toolleen Tin Shed. I hope to see you all at both events with our friends and family aswell for some great times. Best wishes, Richard Chan Central Victoria Branch President

Gear review
By Richard Chan
A
part of all our kits that we carry is definitely a knife of some description. I picked up the old trusty Vitrinox boning knife, tried and tested by a large proportion of the deer hunting community. I got the knife, but carrying it around safely in my hunting pack was another thing. I initially purchased a f-dick plastic knife cover but found multiple times that the knife had fallen out and I was extremely lucky I hadn’t taken a spill down a hill or into a wombat hole where I could have possibly ended up with a piece of steel hanging out of my back. I contacted a few knife makers who made their
own leather sheaths, only to be told that they only make them for their own knives. On trusty Facebook I was on a hunting page and come across WildFire Gear, from Wollongong, that handcrafts blades, leather and a whole lot more. Ben was advertising a recent custom knife sheath that he had made for a customer and it looked the goods to me. After a couple of messages I sent my knife and rabbiters steel to Ben to have a custom sheath made to hold them both and protect my back. There were plenty of conversations throughout the two weeks he had my knife about how I wanted it to look and perform.

The whole time Ben took my ideas on board, but was also not giving to much way leaving the end product a surprise. And a surprise it was, I was over the moon with what Ben had done for me and was exactly what I was after. The leather is 4mm Veg tan hand dyed Whiskey colour (while the steel pocket is 2mm Veg Tan leather wet formed around the steel. All stitched with artificial sinew. Brass buttons and hand hammered solid copper rivets, (although shiny in the photos they have darkened/ tarnished with time and I have been they will continue to do so there will be minimal reflection while hunting), most of the time I will but hunt-
ing with it in my pack but bit is nice to know that I can wear it on my hip if I like without the flashing light at skittish game giving my position away. Finally it has been finished Carnauba wax and crocodile oil leather protection. The steel is held in by the leather being a snug fit as well as the knife handle holding it in (a design that Ben come upwith) The workman ship of this leather product from my experience is second to none and the customer service was fantastic as I mentioned above. Remember the rules! Taken from the Firearm Safety Code. Download at: www.police.vic.gov.au/
Rule 6: Store firearms and ammunition safely You are required by law to have a safe and secure place to store your firearms. All firearms and ammunition should be stored separately, out of the reach of children, out of view and in an approved cabinet. A complete firearm is dangerous in the wrong hands, so lock away your unloaded firearm and ammunition separately. Do this immediately when you return to camp or home from shooting. Securing firearms out of sight will help prevent removal by thieves. For legal requirements in relation to transportation of firearms and ammunition, see pages 34 and 35.
SECTION ONE: What you must know about firearms 1a) The ten basic rules 1. Treat every firearm as loaded 2. Always point firearms in a safe direction 3. Load a firearm only when ready to fire 4. Identify your target beyond all doubt 5. Check your firing zone 6. Store firearms and ammunition safely 7. Avoid alcohol or drugs prior to and while handling firearms 8. Never have loaded firearms in the car, home or camp 9. Never fire at hard surfaces or water 10. Don’t climb fences or obstacles with loaded firearms
The ten basic rules explained As long as a firearm is in good condition and handled and stored properly, it cannot hurt anyone. You are responsible for making sure your firearm is in good condition and handled safely.

Firearms Storage The Firearms Act 1996 (Schedule 4) provides for storage standards for firearms and ammunition. The following is a brief summary of the storage requirements which you must be able to satisfy. Storage Requirements (for Category A + B Firearms) • Hard wood or steel container - not easy to penetrate. • If the container weighs less than 150kg when empty, it must be securely fixed to the floor or wall frame. • When a firearm is in the container, the container MUST be Jlocked with a lock of sturdy construction. • The premises must be fitted with an ‘intruder alarm system’ if more than 15 firearms are stored on the premises. ‘Intruder alarm system’ means an alarm system which is installed, maintained and operated in accordance with Australian Standard 2201.1.2007 (as amended from time to time) and which, in the event of an intrusion, activates an audible alarm warning device and an external visible alarm warning light. • Ammunition must be stored in a separate locked container (not within the firearm) unless the receptacle is purpose built to store ammunition separately from the firearms. • All Victorian Licence holders should when travelling interstate, check with that states Police Firearms Registry as to licensing and storage requirements. All family members, especially children, need to know what a firearm is, what it is designed for, and why it must not be touched. It is essential that children realise that firearms are not playthings and must be treated with caution and respect. Children should be taught not to touch a firearm without an adult present, and if they find a firearm to seek the assistance of an adult.
