10 Tips for Selecting Toys for Your Speech Delayed Child
Every child is unique in their sense, they do things in their own way and on their own time. “Not all children are ready to learn same things at same way in same time” When concerned about your child speech development, the first person you should speak to is “your doctor”. Here are few tips in selecting toys for your speech delayed child given by Audiologist and Speech Therapist. 1. For your child to develop their speech, they have to practice. It can be little tricky to get speaker to talk, so engage them in meaningful play and activities where they naturally encouraged to participate in talking. 2. Give your child a chance to respond. Often your child takes long to respond on what is being spoken and for them to think on appropriate response and say it. 3. Don’t worry about gender while selecting toys. When picking toys for your child, don’t stick to gender specific toys. Let your girls play with trucks and trains and your boys play with toy kitchens and baby dolls. 4. Use more preposition, verbs and nouns in your speech, as such these will help to improve your child speech. It is not necessary to speak these words in daily basis, but especially when you are with your child, so that they will learn how to speak.
5. Find new and engaging ways to play with them that allow you opportunities to practice other words like blowing bubbles with them will allow you to practice the
language that will come naturally with that activity, such as, "more," "bubbles," and "blow." Playing with cars can encourage language such as, "go," "stop," "drive," "brrrrrroooom," and "beep beep”.
6. If your child is having problem in pronouncing certain words like “wewy” instead of “Very”, try and find new ways which naturally will improve the pronouncing.
7. Repeat what your child speaks, clearly and loudly so that he/she can know how to speak that word. Try to engage them in conversation and try to make them speak more clearly as they can.
8. Understand child interest and try to engage them in things which they like the most. Extract some time from your schedule and spend time with you kinds which will make them happy 9. Praise your child for their efforts. Positive praise can work wonders on children so be sure to acknowledge their efforts at communicating verbally and encourage them to continue that. 10.One great way to work on speech and language skills with young children is by creating photo books using images of the child and his/her family. Children love seeing pictures of themselves and others, tries to speak and try to ask question. Hence their speech and vocabulary will improve.
