ARE OVER THE COUNTER (OTC) DRUGS SAFE?

For the minor health problems like common cold, headache, constipation, allergies, flu, nausea, etc we used to take the medicines that are easily available or given by the pharmacist without consulting the doctor. OTC- Over the counter medicines are also known as nonprescription medicines. OTC medicines are sold directly to the consumers without any prescription from the healthcare professional. OTC drugs have a low risk if taken occasionally and properly by adults who are healthy. But they can pose greater risks for some people like young children, older adults, and to all those who are taking more than 1 type of medicines. Side Effects /Adverse Effects


Side effects are also known as adverse events. Those are unwanted or unexpected events or reactions of a drug. Side effects are different from the drug allergies. Most of the side effects are unpleasant. Some of them are nausea, dizziness, or bleeding in gastrointestinal (GI) tract. In some cases side effects may vary from minor problem of runny nose to life threatening events, such as an increased risk of a heart attack. How to avoid Adverse Effects? Here are some of the tips for taking OTC Medicines safely  Limit the use of OTC medicines. Prefer to use in case of Emergency.  If you are already taking any prescribed medicines consult a doctor before taking the OTC medicine.  Read the labels carefully especially double check the warnings and possible effects.  In case of misleading labels ask to the pharmacist or to the doctor before taking the medicine.  Take the medicine as instructed and in case of not getting the relief do not take high dose.  For child treatment the medication dosage are different so use the correct measuring device.  Don’t stir medicine into food or take capsules apart unless the doctor recommend as it may change the way the medicine works.  Don’t take medicine with alcoholic drinks. Avoid mixing the medicines into hot drinks unless mentioned on label. The heat may change the functioning.  Avoid taking vitamin pills with medicines as vitamins and minerals can cause problems if taken together.


 Keep a track of allergies and side effects that you have faced in past by taking the OTC, so as to avoid the medicines containing the similar ingredients.
