THE NEW RULES ON EATING AND DRINKING BEFORE ANESTHESIA

Anesthesia is a combination of drugs given to a patient to either numb a particular region of the body (local anesthesia) or to make patient entirely unconscious (general anesthesia) so that a surgical procedure can be completed. There were many reason why doctors have been instructing patients not to have food and drink order for so long. For generation ago doctors have put patients on a strict fast before going for any surgery. This was the time when technologies were not that fast growing that changes could be made. The concept as that by fasting at least eight hours prior to going under surgery, your stomach will be mostly empty. Thus decreasing the risk of problems during surgery. But as technologies and research evolved rapidly myths about what to eat and drink before surgery has come to an end. Below are some new rules on eating and drinking before anesthesia by anesthesiologist.  As per new research patients who have taken liquids two hours before their surgery had emptier stomach then those who have fasted a day prior.  By research it was found that just because patient have to do fasting, they use to consume heavy lunch and dinner just to get last meal before surgery. This meal would not get digested overnight because of low digestive power at night. So consume as per you capacity to digest.  As per studies it’s have been found that allowing patients to drink clear liquids up to two hours prior to surgery does not increase the risk of choking or other complications
