ŎŪůŪġńŰŰűŦųġŅ Fifteen years ago, we went to London, Oxford and Paris. Mini cars were most welcomed in those countries. Out of a large variety of mini cars on the street, obviously, mini was the most attractive in those cities. To certain people, Mini represents practicality. It was revolutionary way back then, when you compared them with Morris Minor and the original VW Beetle. The Mini was still smaller than both of them. When, we first saw the Mini Cooper D, it was something different. A piece of art that we thought we knew but seemed to be a little bit strange. However, the Mini Cooper D was very attractive. Everyone on the street knew that it was a retro car, but there were something different. The car was actually much larger than the original Mini. Driving the Mini Cooper was again giving the person something totally different. It is not powered by the normal petrol engine. It was powered by a turbo diesel engine. This engine plus all of its accessories helps to lower its fuel consumption rate to just 3.9Litre per 100kms, as claimed by BMW. However, its massive torque was able to unleash between 1,500 to 2,000 rpm. Hence, a lot of drivers wouldn’t know the difference between the petrol and the diesel engine. But, actually, it takes a little bit less than 10 seconds to pull the car from stand still to 100kms.

28 Drive-way

One of the most important tricks that help to lower the fuel consumption was by simply cut down the engine when idling. When the gear is in neutral, the engine will stop. When the clutch is depressed again, the engine fires up. The Stop Start technology was widely used by other companies as well. I came across similar technology with Land Rover and Smart. The Mini uses similar technology, but generally, I feel, it can give a pass to that function. Strictly personal, a high tech Mini shouldn’t be doing that to cut down a mere few percentage of fuel consumption that trades off for quicker response. But if that is what you are thinking about, the truth is you can shut down the stop start function and still enjoy your crispy fun driving. Other thing that might interest you was that, it is practical to sit four people in the car. A little bit more room than the Smart but 75% more expensive than it. As the real fuel consumption is just marginally less than the Toyota Prius, you might still want to hang on to the real deal of conventional cutting edge technology but not giving up to the hybrid electro-combustion motoring age. Enjoy the Mini Cooper D, it worths every cent.

Turbo Diesel all wheel drive

Edmund Chow Translate: Driveway Team

I have really driven two four wheel drive to their maximum capacity. The first one is Freelander 2 and the second one is Santa Fe.

substantially helps towing caravan or small speed boat. That makes it an ideal machine for just doing that kind of recreational activities

Both of these cars have strengths and weaknesses. But these represent a trade off between prestige and affordability. It will not be fair to say which is better than which. Somehow, it is up to you. Will someone be driving a Range Rover as a daily commuter in the desert? The possibility is quite low.

At present, there are three variants the SLX, Elite and the Highlander. All three models come with 5 star ANCAP safety ratings. Different models add up a little bit of conveniences and luxury. The Highlander that becomes a house hold name for its iX35 has all the goodies such as rear parking camera, leather upholstery, powered front seats, better CD/MP3 audio, connectivity to iPod and other AUX audio machines, bigger and better looking 18 inches alloy wheels, rain sensitive wipers and a sun roof for the outdoor adventurers.

Out of practicability, I will buy Santa Fe. It is because it is easy to live with. On the other hand, it is cheaper to run. May be that option points me toward a certain socio economical status that I am not acutely aware of. The 2010 all new Hyundai Santa Fe is a lovely machine. It has its own character, but it has changed its direction and opted for all wheel drive with all diesel lines up as well. Hyundai pointed out that mid-size all wheel drive has a higher patronage than 2 front wheel drive and a rather lazy petrol engine. That’s what the customers have said. Hence, the all wheel drive turbo diesel engine is the only way to go. Yet, most motoring journalist will tell you that turbo diesel is the right way to go for its low speed gigantic torque that allows your car to be more responsive and economical. It uses less fuel as well. The 2.2 litre turbo diesel is as powerful as the 3.3 litre and 2.7 litre petrol that it has replaced. This engine works seamlessly with the all new ground up six speed lightweight auto that

28 Drive-way

The turbo diesel has a revisit on its faster power delivery and more environmentally friendly. It uses new piezo electric injectors that speed things up. It is actually an excellent partner to the common rail turbo diesel system. As we lived with the Santa Fe for a week, my perception has changed dramatically by its diesel engine improvement. Cluttering and rattling noise went down to near nothing, we sticked with the six speed auto but the auto gear box matches perfectly with the turbo diesel engine. Performance starts from a low 1,500 to 2,000 rpm. Therefore, it is a bargain to get it as a high performance machine for daily commuting. Turbo diesel 4 cylinder engine delivers 145kW of power @3800rpm , 436Nm torque for the auto gear box Cabin layout is pretty much the same, but it is practical. Overall surrounding view, in particular the last quarters are better than most similar cars in the

Hyundai

First drive in Sunbury and Mt Macedon Melbourne region

A recent compact SUV research commissioned by Hyundai earlier this month (February 2010), with a relatively small research sample of 700 intenders indicated that more new car buyers were migrating into the compact SUV segment in a slow but steady increasing pace. The sales figures of compact SUV were up from 8.45% in 2008 to 84,598 units in 2009 representing a 9% of all vehicle total sales in Australia. As the promising research results points out that all new iX35 fit into a rosy niche market in its compact SUV segment, which is nicely targeted for professional with young siblings and female driver aged from 25 - 49. Inspired by the concept car “iX.onic”, the reincarnated body is no doubt a sleek crossover with a dynamic outlook. The theme of Re-imagination surely gives the iX35 an outstanding appearance in its segment. Designed at Hyundai Design Centre in Russelsheim in Germany, the aerodynamic bodywork is anything but boring. It captures the unique fluidic sculpture architecture in post modern body design era with double Z body side panels, swept back headlights, a heavily rake back A-pillar to mimic superb slippery water and air flow for ultimate energy saving but added a distinctive European and energetic appearance. In addition, its prominent flared wheel arches highlighted its athletic and aggressive attitude. The introduction of a much distinctive hexagonal front grille will gradually become a key signature for the Hyundai family With the introduction of the all new R series turbo diesel engine and its 6

speed automatic gear box, a famous futurist and eco adventurer Hans Tholstrup took the iX35 for a spin. Using just a single tank of 70.23 litres diesel travelled to and from Adelaide from RACV Noble Park in Melbourne in around 22 hours. This excellent result translated to a remarkable 4.85 litre per 100 kilometers record for a non hybrid All Wheel Drive car. Hans said that the new diesel engine with the advance in house developed six speed auto gear box helps other average drivers in saving fuel that previously only a miserly five speed manual gear box might deliver. The six speed auto will do the thinking for most drivers who are not used to driving economically. It is almost “fool proofed”. In addition, he said Australians had to do more with less to save the environment. The remarkable result in Hans’ eco challenge demonstrated that iX35 has an important point to make. It is more comfortable with standard electric adjustable driver seat, cheaper to run, save the environment and fits in the idea of safety, efficiency and appealing styling and practicality as well in the compact SUV segment. When, evaluating the all new Santa Fe, the R series turbo diesel engine was already mated with the 6 speed auto gear box had already demonstrated its distinctive performance. The iX35 borrows the whole set up from Santa Fe. The result was clearly remarkable. It is smooth and clever thinking. The turbo diesel engine with the 6 speed automatic gear box were only available in the

all wheel drive option in the mid and top of the range “Highlander” model. It made my driving experience just a piece of cake when drive on rough and gravel road conditions. At the launch, we were given different models of petrol and turbo diesel to get a taste how was it like in just a few hours. The turbo diesel worked extremely well with the auto gearbox. I didn’t fiddle with the +/- options much, yet the box’s clever thinking just gave me a perfect ride. In low speed or stand still acceleration, the merits of the new turbo diesel engine not only saved fuel but the massive torque also performs as if it was a petrol V6. Roll on acceleration was just easy and enormous power was on demand. Ride quality including suspension set up was excellent. Road and wind noise was minimal. An expecting 5 stars ANCAP ratings will seal its leading and commanding position in the compact SUV market. There are two petrol engines the 2.0 litre for the front wheel drive or 2.4 litre for the all wheel drive. My general recollection of the 2.0 litre petrol engine was that it was leaning heavily towards fuel savings, thus characterizing a more gentle response to acceleration. The 2.4litre as equipped on the mid range the 130kW and 227Nm 2.4 litre petrol engine is more responsive to tour around the tracks and cruising on open road. It hits various road conditions with flare. Yet, floor acceleration will give you an exceptional good performance in both stand still or roll on acceleration. By all means it is an enjoyable car to drive yet more interactive with its extremely inviting 6 speed

auto gear box that will surely give you a highly desirable and enjoyable driving experience. As for the safety features, high tensile steel is used in all common stressed area. Reinforced body chassis is created with rigid cabin and crush zones on its blueprint front and rear with side impact intrusion bars are built in feature for all doors. Other safety features such as ABS brakes with 4 channel Electronic brake force distribution (EBD), highly acclaimed and much needed extra safety features ESP stability control incorporating Traction Control System (TCS) that will certainly adds an extra peace of mind to yourself or whoever driving the gorgeous looking iX35. However, two minor points that needed attention. Firstly, steering column should be able to provide both reach and tilt adjustment. Secondly, as the spokesman of Hyundai, Mr Ben Hershman, pointed out, “Hyundai has always been about re-imagining, leading but not following”. I totally agreed with him. Following that line of thought, a more affordable GPS satellite system for the mid and high spec models will definitely put more icing on the lovely Black Forest cake “iX35” that was conceived in Russelsheim in Germany. Enjoy the iX35 with a highly Eco stance, built quality and outstanding safety credentials. Most importantly a price, not necessary the cheapest, that will fitting almost everyone’s hip pocket. From now on, there is actually no more excuse for young professionals looking for a second hand compact SUV. The iX35 is just the right package for salary sacrificing that its owner will enjoy.

I owned a Volvo a long time ago. It was a rusty old 240 sedan and I had to sell it because other drivers cut me off and tailgated me. Times have changed, and these days Volvo has a much better image. First impressions: the interior is beautifully presented and the fit and finish is excellent, with attention to detail and quality materials. There is one glaring problem however, and I personally could not live with it. For some reason, the steering wheel is not directly in line with the driver, it is offset to the right. You find yourself reaching further with your left hand to the wheel than your right, which feels strange. I may be picky but I found this annoying. This is actually a shame because overall, the car is very good. I’d say it’s one of the best SUV’s on the market. It is supremely comfortable, and one of the most surprising things is its ability on the road. It seemed the faster you went

on winding fast roads, the better it liked it. It just sweeps along and eats up bends with ease, and feels very solid and safe, which is of course Volvo’s thing. All-wheel-drive vehicles tend to understeer (push wide at the front) in corners when pushed hard, but the Volvo is designed by clever engineers and there’s not much of that in evidence. There is plenty of grip and is solid at the rear as well. The car comes standard with Electronic Stability Control so it’s all taken care of anyway if it all goes ‘pear-shaped’. Power is not a problem thanks to a superb turbocharged five cylinder diesel which produces a healthy 151Kw and a massive 420Nm of torque, which could pull tree stumps out. It sounds great too. There is a petrol six available also, which produces 210Kw and an excellent 400Nm of torque. The XC60 has a clever all-wheel-drive system which engages fully on takeoff,

then only engages 5% to the rear wheels once on the move, assisting with reducing fuel consumption. The Geartronic gearbox is a six speed, and is wonderfully smooth. The changes are almost imperceptible. Of course, Volvo’s big selling feature is its safety, and this one has everything, including millions of airbags, optional Collision Warning/automatic braking, lane departure and a ‘blindspot’ warning. I found the latter two a little over-the-top, with obvious things like buses next to you triggering a beeping noise and causing lights to flash. In my opinion, no driver should need these things. At one stage I used a smooth ‘line’ through a bend on a single lane road (not going over the centre line of course), which set the Lane Departure warning beeper off. It would be better if it just worked on straight open roads or freeways if the driver has mistakenly crossed the dividing line. There is more to like than dislike in its ability on the road and its power and power delivery, as well as the safety aspects, but you are paying a premium. ‘Volvo people’ will love this car however. If it wasn’t that nagging problem of the weird steering wheel position, it would be a great car.

Golf GTI

The GTi has always been a great little package and just gets better every year. You would not think they could improve it but the 2010 model is a brilliant drive. It also looks good, nice and low with a huge wheel and tyre package. To drive, it’s just so much fun and does everything right - I would even venture to say it is more of a driver’s car than the WRX or Mitsubishi Evo. In fact, if it was all-wheel-drive, it would not be as exciting to drive. The handling is just superb and for a front wheel drive it has incredibly sharp turn in. It is not easy to find a good enough road to really test this car, its limits are so high and it just does everything so effortlessly. I tried entering tight corners at increasingly higher speeds (within the speed limits of course), and the little GTi just took it all in with no hint of losing traction. The rear end stays planted too but with just enough looseness to make it fun but not scary. People often describe some cars as having ‘go-kart like’ handling, but the GTi

makes you seriously feel like you could keep up with a go-kart on one of those tight little tracks! There is a choice of ‘comfort’ or ‘sport’ damper settings, and sport is seriously hard but your teeth will fall out on our rough Victorian roads. The comfort setting is fine for most situations. The huge brakes are effective, and at parking speeds you have to be careful because if you happen to brush them, it just stops dead and nearly throws you through the windscreen. At open road speeds and with some testing corners however, the brakes show how good they are, very confidence-boosting with plenty of feel. Unlike many cars these days, you have to push really hard to get the ABS to work, which is great. The first thing you notice is the seats, being very supportive with an enormous range of positions and heights. Many taller drivers find small cars difficult to even get into these days, but VW are very generous and thoughtful with this

aspect. A seven-footer could fit without drama. All of the controls make perfect sense and are within easy reach (great stereo too) and the steering wheel has a race-car-style flat bottom, and a good meaty feel to it. You instantly feel right at home in this car. Power and torque is up on the previous model, 155kW and 280Nm. There is no shortage of willing grunt from the 2.0 litre turbocharged engine, and it pulls strongly even in the higher gears of the six-speed. In the lower gears, it goes like a scalded cat if you want it to. The great thing is, like all well engineered cars, you can either drive it like a sports car or a shopping jeep; it will do both and everything in between. You could also take it to a track day and surprise a lot of people. The turbo has very little lag, and the engine responds instantly to the slightest push on the accelerator. All in all, a beautifully engineered and thought out car, and for anyone looking for a ‘pocket rocket’, you need to look no further than this.

BMW Geoff Fickling This is a design you either love or hate and based on the looks we got, parked or on the move, most observers seemed to love it. It certainly grabs your attention, especially that long nose, which, from the very low driver’s seat, seems to go on forever. On a couple of occasions I had to get out and check how much room I had going in to parking spots. I liked the design the first time I saw it, then it began to wear off, I think because of its awkwardness. I say awkward because it is not easy to get in and out of. I could not imagine living with this car too long, especially if you were on the go all day, popping in and out of it. I mentioned this to a friend of mine however and she said she could definitely live with it, because she fell in love with it. The car is very low, and you therefore sort of drop into the seats. I don’t know if its because I’ve been driving a people mover for a few months, but I also

found the cabin claustrophobic, but this again is probably personal taste. The seats are however very good and supportive and you can get the driving position to where you want it. Everything fell to hand as per usual BMW standards, but the gearshift lever in this 6-speed manual I found a little hard to get used to. You had to twist your arm to shift from first to second. The shift itself was great however, with just the right firmness. Engine wise, I was a little disappointed – its a straight six of 3 litres capacity and apparently, 170 kW, didn’t seem to have enough grunt to warrant its sporty looks. It took off well enough, but just didn’t have that neck-snapping performance you expect. Maybe I’ve been spoiled by the M3! It pulled well in higher gears at low speeds though, showing some decent torque. And as expected, very smooth with a lovely engine note. Handling-wise, this was far better. The car feels very solid on the road, quite Drive-way

hard but not ridiculously so. Over bumps there was no bad behaviour, and it handled undulations and sudden changes beautifully. Through bends, it was absolutely fantastic, rock solid at both ends. You are sitting virtually over the rear axle, so you certainly know what is going on and this inspires confidence. All the clever safety gear is there of course – ESP and ABS. However it also has Dynamic Traction Control, which you can activate via a button, which allows you to throw the car around a bit without the fun police (ESP) intervening. It has some other clever gear, including a Sport button which increases the electronic accelerator’s responsiveness. The wheel and tyre package is great, with large 225/45 tyres, but being so close the ground you really hear them. And there’s no spare, they are the run flat variety, which again, some people like and others not. The best part are the brakes, very powerful, progressive and with a nice hard pedal. The ABS only comes in when you give the pedal an almighty push, which is how it should be. All in all, a well engineered sports car that looks and feels like a sports car should. It’s not everyone’s taste however.

Mitsubishi

Outlander VRX

We have evaluated quite a lot of SUV / 4WD. However, the Mitsubishi Outlander VRX is perhaps a really interesting car that we have come across. When I was driving the car for a week, I was wondering what was the most important factor that made the Outlander becoming my dream SUV. Appearance Everyone knows that the restyling of the front grille has given the Outlander a fresh and up-market look. You may realize that it looks like its little brother the Evo 10. The more aggressive snout matches its stand out character as a fierce warrior. Everything is about image, it makes its image more up market and can catch the eyes of the young professionals. The much needed but highly successful plastic surgery has given the Outlander a new lease of life. Under the bonnet The refined VRX has a better and slightly improved performance engine,

sipping premium petrol, it pumps out 169kW of power at 6,250rpm. Torque has been improved to 291Nm @3,750 rpm as well. Following the introduction of Super All Wheel Drive, the VRX also has been given the similar all wheel drive system that offers Tarmac, Snow and Lock modes, but it misses out the gravel road condition option from the Mitsubishi Lancer EVO 10. In addition, it uses electric rather than hydraulic to apportion and limit wheel spin. How it drives like I love it, the acceleration is punchier. Steering is more responsive than the previous model. The refined V6 gives a much sporty feeling while flooring the throttle. The 6 speed auto comes with a paddle gear shift and could respond much quicker than the previous model. Fuel consumption is rather reasonable than thirsty.

26-03-10 No. 157

Better sound dampening materials are used to provide a more peaceful and quiet cabin. A decent cabin space and better cabin trim materials are being used to refresh the Outlander. Suspensions are slightly revisited to help it becoming more stable and body roll is extremely limited. We have tried to turn the stability control off, but the locked 4WD system still gives a secure feeling on almost every road conditions. On the other hand, normal highway tyres would restrict drivers to go for a more serious bush bashing road condition. Other things to look at It has everything that you need. Electric sun roof, leather heated seats, climate control. A multi-functional touch screen satellite navigation audio system with reverse camera connection. The serious sound system is hooked up to Rockford Fosgate system with a huge subwoofer at the back. Other minor but practical accessories such as Bluetooth and smart key entry are standard.

Will I buy it/ Yes, definitely. It is around $50,000 drive away. Cabin is flexible, stylish and looks like an EVO 10. It has a practical split tailgate that helps loading supermarket shoppings into the car without worrying falling off. I feel that the re-styled and re-visited engine and the 4 wheel drive system all adds up to a more stylish and snippy car.

Liberty Edmund Chow

It is some thing that I’ve been caught off guard. After teaching for a while in the community hall, then, I noticed that I’ve to write something that is more off guard.

previous Liberty. It may be a good strategy as leaving the Forester size may suit the ever increasing number of family wagon buyers.

Past experience told me that Subaru represented high quality of car making; it’s a different philosophy or even being praised for being the Japanese version of the Swedish Volvo. To me, it is bigger than I thought; but to my surprise, it is still a very truly Subaru.

The car has a CVT transmission that makes me feel it needs more work for getting its energy out. I feel like it needs to work slightly a little bit harder to get the juice out of the engine. But generally, you wouldn’t get the excitement of the WRX. You need to press the throttle harder to get the strong, firm reaction and sweet roaring of the highly acclaimed boxer engine. On the other hand, it needs more petrol to keep it going, well sort of just 8.8litre or so for 100kms.

It is strange to get a six seater in a more traditional seven seater set up. It would be much easier to sell it as a seven seater; but Subaru chose not to follow the crowd. Instead, they wanted to stand out. I would say they have made a strong and valid statement. No matter how you look at it, it retains a strong resemblance of the Subaru family, even though it is slightly smaller than a Trebecca and larger than the

The steering is nice, something that can be sourced easily from the parts department of Forester or WRX etc. An additional paddle shift makes your gear interaction far more interesting. Suspension is well balanced for a family wagon, but not too extreme on either the firm or soft side. It is just right.

Apart from that, the cabin is well designed. Having said that, it is a bit odd to take out the mid row middle seat just to make room for the hand rest and cup holder. To my dear daughter’s enjoyment, she likes the huge DVD and leather seats. Well, would you like to buy one? It depends on your life style. Do you like to stand out from the crowd? The Subara certainly is and entertains you in that way. I feel the car is slightly larger than most mid size family wagons; but it has a boxer engine, that confuses me. Yet it is convenient to pack all the gear for a camping holiday. Well, put it this way, when we grow up or grow old, we need a little bit more of personal luxury, so, a few more day packs or luggage would easily fill our car. The Liberty is perhaps the key for a happy and packed holiday in venturing out for a wonderful driving trip in Australia. RX450h Edmund Chow

Translate: Driveway Team

It is difficult to say anything against the Lexus RX450h. We had tested the RX400h sometime ago. And we fell in love with the RX450h again. It is not cheap but we always ask ourselves, does it worth paying around A$13,000 more for the hybrid set up rather than just getting the RX350? In Australia, you can basically do anything if you obey the rules, regulations and the laws. People are now more cautious about the environment than some years ago. The owners of those hybrid vehicles are actually leaders in making a stance about our attitude towards global warming. It is similar to the “keep daily water usage to 155 litres” statement. Basically the RX450h retains the similar image of a sporty mid size SUV. It is sporty and beautifully appointed with all the useful gadgets. My personal impression is that Lexus truly sets itself up amongst BMW and Mercedes Benz. I would say it is somewhere in between or even better in one or two items.

28 Drive-way

Over the years, its performance in fuel savings and power output has improved un- proportionally. Engine power has a 10 percent increase but still enjoy a 28 percent of combined fuel consumption, with at the same time a 23 per decrease in CO2 emission. The reason behind is the introduction of a high expansion engine cycle called Atkinson, which gives a higher compression ratio than a conventional cycle engine. That gives a maximum combustion effect. In addition, it incorporates direct ignition, Lexus/Toyota’s dual VVT-I and Quad-Cam Multi-vales to make it works. In other words, it has a combined total power of 220kW from a V6 petrol engine and two electric motors to give it a total power output of 220kW. A standard V6 Aurion sedan is just giving out 200kW of power. On the other hand, fuel consumption is claimed to be 6.3 litres per 100km. CO2 emission has come down to 148g/km which is even lower than a standard Toyota Corolla of producing 175g/km.

There are a few impressive equipments that I like. Firstly the active cruise control, which is similar to the Volkswagen that it will respond to intruding vehicle into your pathway and will slow down the car for you as to avoid a possible collision. Secondly, the head up display. As driver should be concentrating on the traffic conditions, a head up display will minimize unnecessary looking away for important information such as variable speed restriction during school hours. How does it drive like? Smooth. It really depends on how you would like to drive the car. You may feel a bit big and experiencing a slight body roll, but that’s ok. It’s the law of physics telling us so, we shouldn’t be driving too fast either. My overall impression is that, it is a practical but luxury car with all the extras that I need but then again making my statement as a leader in fighting excessive green house gas emission. On the other hand, I don’t have to compromise on creature comforts while driving, except perhaps there might have been an oversight of rear large ceiling mount DVD screen and heating control on seats for my precious cargo at the back – our daughter.

Ford

XR 8 Ute

There is something special when driving a strange car like an utility or simply Ute. There isn’t anything different comparing to a normal sedan, yet, when you look at it, most probably you would think what a waste. Such a gorgeous looking front end of a family sedan oddly attached to a tray or a so called “style-box”. Indeed, when you realized the story behind it, that it was a Victorian farmer’s wife who wanted a car to go the church and during the day, be able to do some odd jobs around the farm, then you would agree with the Australian inventor of the first Utility in the World, that such a wonderful and marvelous specie was conceived in Victoria during the early 1930s. Since then, the practicality of the Ute was never challenged. On the other hand, utility became an important part of Australian and perhaps American culture as well. Following the evolution of its sedan counterpart, utility is not restricted as being just a miniature truck. Rather, it becomes a strong culture of driving comfort, power surge and practicality. Every year, there is an annual

muster of utility in a country town called Delinquent in Southern New South Wales. Thousands of utilities turn up to celebrate the Ute culture. Recently, people race with Ute as well. To a certain extent, it has its advantage over its sedan counter part,. A number of car enthusiasts understand the beauty of Ford’s XR6 Turbo, but when we talk about flexibility of the V8 engine of the XR8, you will be able to appreciate the goodness and power surge of a flawless V8. The FG Falcon V8 is by far one of the best in the world. It pumps out 290kW and 520Nm quad cam Boss engine with 6 speed ZF sequential auto gear box. It comes with 17 inches wheel, incorporating modern safety features such as ABS brakes, traction control, brake force distribution, brake assist and twin airbags etc. You can even order side airbags for it as well. It is enough for a commercially based car. Crash rating should be around 4 stars. Drive-way

When you talk about speed, I would like to ask you whether you would risk your life for it. It is not safety that you should be concerned, but it is so fast that you either risk your life or license or just simply both. While planted on the floor, it just unleashed a massive acceleration urge through its back wheels. A matching throttle soundtrack of its roaring engine sang beautifully to the driver’s ears. However, the leaf-spring rear suspension, designed for taking up heavy load, might be its Achilles’ heel because its massive power may slip through its tyres when it came across bumpy and gravel road surface. Fuel usage for a 5.4litre V8 is doing ok for a 13 litres per 100 kms. Cruising around town will certainly require more fuel. Steering is extremely clear and precise, It has a strong chassis to cope with rapid and agile maneuvers. I would say, I like the unpredictable rear end movements. Just imagine joining a highway from a 90 degree side street, while doing it in a 80kms. You will feel that there is a lot of movements at the back. The massive power interacts with basically no weight, but the mechanism at the back. I felt the car was on steroid. I absolutely love it. It is much better than drive more expensive cars with their electronic safety toys. Well you have to be very well experienced and knowing what you are doing and practicing it in a private proofing ground with absolutely no one in that place before you try one. For a good car like this, I hate to call it a pass because I can have two passengers. Apart from that, it is an extreme delight to drive a ute, but still enjoying a lot of fun in the purest form of motoring experience in this great country.
