Land Rover Freelander 2 To be honest I was not expecting much from this car. I know it’s not a fair comparison but I owned a Discovery once and it was not a pleasant experience. I also did a long-term test of the first Freelander and was not impressed. I’m pleased to say the new Freelander 2 is so much better than expected. This car has been completely re-designed from the ground up, which it needed. Its very well put together and thought out. It feels solid on the road and off. This was the turbo-diesel with auto transmission, and from the get-go it was impressive. Fit and finish is excellent, and you really start to warm to the soft-touch knobs and good looking dash design. It is modern and functional and proves that the Japanese are not dominating this sector quite yet. This model had leather interior with well designed seats and plenty of position choices for different sizes. The only problem I encountered was an obtrusive centre console, which pushes your left leg across and you can’t really relax properly. Oddly, this was only a problem on the drivers side, because on the passenger side it didn’t seem to be so obtrusive. All controls are easy to use, falling to hand without much effort or thought. The stereo and heater controls were easy to master and you don’t need to be Einstein to work everything out. It’s a good looking car all round. It had the big 19 inch wheels and really stood out. In fact it looks like a mini Range Rover.

But it’s the driving that gets you. The engine is very strong, the turbo coming in just when you need it and with very little lag. In my steep up-hill test it really performed well. The gearbox and engine works beautifully together and the ‘manual’ option is excellent, especially down hills where you need to keep the speed down just in case a ‘speed tax’ device is lurking. Anyone who would not consider a diesel based on past experience should take another look, because in reality the technology has come a long way. They are quiet (inside the cabin at least), efficient, environmentally friendly and performance is now a world away from those truck like beasts of the 70’s and 80’s. Handling was surprisingly good too, and not what you would expect from a ‘soft-roader’. It was very solid and the big tyres gripped well. There was just a hint of understeer and if pushed really hard this high off the ground vehicle settles into a neutral all wheel drift, but its all very controllable and most drivers will not get near its limits. This vehicle is not designed for the ‘boy racers’ after all. Off the road, like its bigger cousins the Discovery 2 and Range Rover, the car performed exceptionally well. It has a button that reduces speed to a crawl for steep tracks which works a treat. No ‘white knuckle’ moments when this nifty device is turned on! As with most all-wheel-drives, low range is not really needed but its there just in case. The car has enough grunt and engineering expertise built-in to get you through almost all slippery situations.

Cyber chick that rocks the road - All New Ford Fiesta
The new kinetic looked of the Fiesta Ford is very visual and sensory up front to almost everyone. It has bulging wheel arches, trapezoidal grille and slim line head lights, very tear drop like aerodynamic body, fog lamps, tall indicator lights sitting at the back, rear spoiler with high mount brake lights. It has 3 doors or 5 doors, auto or manual. You either hate it or love its space age setup. I would say people would love it. Once you get behind the gorgeous looking steering wheels, you will interact with its classy European built quality cabin. Then emotionally you will feel you can go faster, conquer the world on becoming the fastest vehicle on the planet with just a 1.6 litre petrol engine. The interior is very practical but stylish. The central console, inspired by Nokia mobile phone key pad, is easy to us. With a joy stick type central knob that almost controls everything, radio, MP3 CD etc. It works very well with a centrally mounted small but neat LCD screen for audio and visual read out. It could be a bit confusing, but it is space age, cyber aged people love those sorts of design. The air conditioning controls are all grouped there neatly with a high quality finishing. The manual gear stick is just at the finger tip. We have test driven the 1.6 litre manual Zetec model 1.6 Duratec Ti-VCT 4-cylinder engine. It produces a healthy 88kW at 6006 Rpm and 152Nm of torque at 4,050 revs. Driving the two wheels in the front, its fuel economy is a healthy 5.7 litres per 100kms.

Its sport seats are very comfortable with plenty of seating positions to adjust and very supportive as well. Suspension is Macpherson strut front and twist beam at the rear. Suspension is excellent with an Australian road condition tuning in mind. The Zetec model includes sport seats, suspension, 16 inches alloys with front and rear spoilers. Price is just from $20,000 for the Zetec 1.6 petrol manual. More affordable models are from just A$16,000 with options for manual or auto gear box; and safety packages include curtain airbags and electronic stability control. The Zetec model gets an extra knee airbag for the driver. Chassis is one of the stiffest in the class, thus it provides a more dynamic ride without compromising comfort and handling. Noise reduction effort is noticeable, I would say, slightly better than other cars in the same class. However, exhaust note is tuned to a tempting pitch that the driver will definitely enjoy the encouraging driving atmosphere. How does it drive like? Quiet, quick, sporty, ambience and agile. Drive is very nice, in particular with its 5 speed gear box. I seldom like a manual gear box. From memory, apart from the Honda S2000, the 5 speed manual gear box in the new Fiesta is my second favorite. . From a start, good steering from its electric powered steering control has a well balanced feel but surprisingly it gives you some important feed back on road condition. gear ratio. The clutch is a perfect match with the manual gear box. It is well balanced and would not make its driver feels tired. It has a sportier tune that helps the car to respond better. It remains supple. Engine is extremely smooth and enjoyable to ride on it. No harsh feeling about sudden acceleration or anything. It has a good engine power to body weight ratio, thus making it a zippy and fun car for driving enjoyment. From my first observation, the deeply raked wind screen seems to be from a space age, therefore slightly hard to see the road condition ahead. Yet, the tilt and reach adjustable steering help to compose an excellent work area for any enthusiastic driver. Gorgeous looking steering wheel with neatly layout cruise control and audio control as well. Around the car vision is good except the back is hindered slightly by the chucky C pillar. Lane changing has to be mindful. But it is a joy to just sit in such a good looking car. Who will buy it I think the new Fiesta is sitting nicely at the fast growing light car sector. Personally, the motoring trend is heading towards downsizing for better fuel economy. Thus, the size is ideal for the local one driver one car, home to office then back home setting travelling need. Therefore, judging from its potentials, it can be the newest market leader for the whole segment, with its fresh and trendy body design, good performance, fuel economy and a famous and reliable brand name. However, I think if the XR4 model, which is traditionally a more powerful model, is coming sooner, it will create a bigger market for young males that dominates the high performance funkier small car segment. Honda Accord Euro 4 cylinder 2.4 litre In some cases, Honda has an Accord just slightly larger than its stable mate Honda Civic, years and years ago. The first generation Accord Euro was even more confusing that it was similar to its slightly smaller than Accord which was the main bread and butter car for Honda in America. Why building two cars with such slight variants? I believe it is the European craftsmanship and quality that Honda Accord was built on. The first generation was refined and welcomed by the market. Some would say it is better than the normal Accord. Why, because it depends on what you want. The new Accord Euro gives you a more muscular and some how a more authoritative look. But that is different from the more pleasant smooth looking Accord. Apart from the engine, the new Euro is batting on its renowned 4 cylinder engine. It is better refined and polished. It pumps out 148kW of power and 234Nm of torque. With a slightly smaller body, it is a sweet but powerful alternative to most turbo engines in the market. It performance is very linear and predictable. Keep the pedal pressured and it will just faithfully keep building its power until 7900 rpm; it was so good that we felt it was a twin turbo. The choice of transmission is either 6 speed manual or 5 speed auto. I believe the 6 speed manual will be a better choice for those love to drive. However, think twice about Melbourne’s nitrous traffic gem, then you would prefer a 5

speed auto. The manual is slick, weight of clutch is good. But I prefer the 5 speed auto. Gear paddles located at the back of the steering wheel provide a handy change of gear when needed. That is the real reason behind some of my friends’ thought about Honda Euro. It is a dream car. Responsive and a more practical body size make the Euro a better preposition for a driver’s car. Seating arrangement is excellent for the driver and front passenger. Steering wheel is reach and tilt adjustable. Great lumber support for the front passenger’s back. In addition, seating position can be adjusted to the most comfortable setting. However, if you have a 6-foot driver and an adult sitting at the back seats, it will certainly make the back passengers feel cramped. But that is normal to a very wide range of medium size car. Audio is great with aux jacks for i-Pod or MP3, with 12-volt outlets, it powers most electrical equipment seamlessly. The suspension is sporty but not harsh. As such it is a well balanced choice for people who prefer sportiness rather than spongy comfort. I agreed with Honda that Euro should be setting itself up as a premium driver’s car. Noise insulation has been improved to accommodate nosier surface such as coarse-chip road. The tyres performed well in the setup.

The exterior of the car makes people feel that it is a bigger car, with longer wheelbase, wider tracks and lower centre of gravity that can improve the car’s response in corning and give a sporty attribute to the car. Electric steering is good except it lacks weight and feedback; it is just on the good but not excellent. The interior is very impressive especially with the in dash Satellite Navigation. Like its bigger brother Accord, the only draw back would be its heavy North American accent that might annoy people with their American pronunciation. But apart from that it is by far the best Sat Nav system in the market. When in reverse, it doubles up as a rear vision monitor. The plastics on the dash and around the door give you a soft pad touch that you would not feel disappointed. Controls are well organized, and ego metric as well. Our recommendation It is a class leading and naturally aspirated 4 cylinder engine that is ultra smooth and powerful. The price is right and with a lot of safety equipments such as ABS, Electronic brake force distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), stability/traction control, two front, side and curtain airbags; all these will certainly help to improve its crash safety rating than its predecessor. I can only say that it is perhaps the best medium size sedan that Honda has ever made. Try it out, you will find its characteristics perhaps slightly better than other Japanese competitors. With a price range starting from $32,990, it can become you dream car as well.

Mercedes Benz B200 may spell as BEST
We have driven the A Class and we actually have tracked down the birth of the B Class as well. Well, the B class is just slightly longer than the A-Class; however, we felt the B may perhaps spell as BEST. It is difficult to find a clear-cut solution to fight against ever increasing fuel price and travelling comfort, and not to mention safety as well. However, the B-class that we have driven has the right answer. Mercedes Benz has marketed the B-class as a Sports Tourer. We couldn’t agree more. The car that we have driven was an automatic with Autotronic continuously variable transmission. With a DOHC 2,034 cc engine producing 100kW at 5,500 rpm and 185Nm of torque @3,500 – 4,000 rpm. The car is competent for almost everything. The fuel consumption is remarkable, as quoted from Mercedes, to be around 7.2 litres per 100 kilometers. However, we can get a better result of around 6.8 litres or so in our combined city and highway run. The car is equipped with a panoramic louvered sunroof, providing excellent sunlight. We like the first part of the louver being able to tilt up for deflecting the wind. I believe anyone who cares about his/her hair will love this devise. It also comes with two roller blinds that defuse excessive sunlight coming in as well. What we felt about this B200 was that it could fit in very well with the city travelling condition. It is not too big as it is just 390mm longer and just a few millimetres wider than the A class. However, due to its clever sandwich design of the cabin floor that allows the engine to slip under the cabin in case of an

unavoidable accident, it has a more up right sitting and more aerodynamic body. Then, it is actually a more SUV body type rather than a sedan or wagon. Although the car was not fitted with electrically adjustable front seat, it did not compromise anything in offering excellent sitting position. Road handling is amongst the best in its class. It is precise, without much unnecessary movement happening. I even have driven it on gravel and unsealed road, it was at ease with its four low profile sports tyres. Even though it was not built as a sports car, I found acceleration was acceptable and could give you that confidence in overtaking or making that urgent right turn on a busy road. It has ABS and better electronic stability program “ESP”, front ventilated brake disc and solid at the back. I truly believe that the car fits for any driver. As a matter of fact, it is perhaps ideal for new drivers as well. As its outlook is remarkably cue, with 17 inches 10-spoke alloy wheels accompanied with 205/50x17 premium rubber. Other safety features includes air curtain and front and side airbags. If you ask me whether I like this car or not, I will say I prefer this B200 rather than other cars or sportwagon in its class. It is easy to live with. In addition, it has a sub A$50,000 price tag to start with a prestigious name and safety record, why bother the other brands? However, the satellite navigation system needs to be upgraded to touch screen mode. I truly believe it will then be even more enjoyable.

Volvo with a different attitude – C30 T5 from a different perspective It is hard to find a car that goes fast but at the same time is also really safe. Volvo C30 T5 could be the only exception. It has a slight linkage with the popular TV series called “Saints” in which the gorgeous P1800 was framed for its exception style. Apart from the styling of the rear hatch, the C30 is by all means a modern answer to speed and safety. In Volvo’s terminology, T5 stands for 5 cylinders turbo charged engine. It has a slightly bigger 2.5 litre petro engine working comfortably with a turbocharger that arrives at 162kW and 320Nm of powerful torque. Matched with a six speed manual gear box, the C30 T5 is a pleasure to drive. It can be ordered with a five speed automatic. However, why border? It is a driver’s car for everyone to enjoy interaction with speed. The C30 has 17 inch alloys, xenon headlights, beautiful interior and a rear spoiler to make you think it will go faster. The engine is so good that Ford uses it for the Ford Focus XR5. 0-100km sprint will just need 6.7 seconds. Not a bad record for a hatch back. In terms of safety, it has all that you need when you came up with an active or passive accident. However, you should say your thanksgiving prayer for paying all those wonderful equipments to save your life. All the airbags, anti-lock brakes, electronic brake-force distribution, brake-assist, seat belt pretensioners and traction plus stability control. As usual for Volvo, they put in the whiplash Protection System and Volvo’s Side Impact protection System

(SIPS) that allows the rigid body to absorb impact from the sides. In general, the body cell can withhold a lot of impact from the front and the rear as well. The glass tailgate that we mentioned earlier comes with a distinctive taillight; the design was a bold move for Volvo, but it is perhaps the state of the art. The front end is unmistakeably a Volvo, yet, it comes with a more assertive Volve grille, plus a C70 style similar set up with lights and fog lamps. It also has a broad shoulder line that creates a brutal stance but that also add an elegant image onto the C30. One thing that I picked up was the optionally available Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) that uses a camera on each of the side mirrors to warn the driver of a vehicle which is travelling in a position where it is difficult to spot. The system will light up a warning lamp near to the inner base of the A pillar. I believe it is very clever and one step towards safe motoring. Interior is very standard Volvo with good audio and a water fall type audio, and air conditional controls. We had driven the C30 when it was first launched in 2007, but the C30 is actually a good investment. Basically, it is targeted towards young drivers. The low front spoiler requires you to be careful when parking. As it is relatively smaller plus a powerful T5 Turbo 5 cylinders engine, it will make you feel it is easier to drive and run faster. Volvo. Fuel economy is around 9 litres per 100 km; but it has good response on sudden acceleration, wide gear ratio that fits into Australian traffic conditions, thus saving you from changing gears. Steering is good and communicative, it gives clear indication of where I want to go. Manual gear slot is clear and short throw. It is behaving exactly like what a sport car should response. In summary, it is a Volvo for everyone who wants a smaller size car with a youthful zest, but with a proven track record on safety and initiative as well. Some time ago, we reported the Mitsubishi Triton. People love those kinds of vehicles and we started to find out more. We have been looking for what seems to be a reliable and affordable brand – yes, that is the feeling company.
HiLux is not only a tradesperson’s truck; in many cases, it represents a bold, adventurous character who needs daily commuting but also needs to enjoy weekend dirty bike ride or any outdoor activities that may out grow a car boot.
TRD HiLux is an extraordinary vehicle from Toyota. It is not a passenger vehicle but it draws people’s whole hearted attention. Especially those cash strapped wealthy tradespersons. Before the world wide financial turmoil, tradespersons earned some handsome dollars with their 110% blood and sweat. Then, a little driving entertainment may well be their need. Well it has all the toys, CD, remote central locking, High and Low gears, Sat Nav if you want one.
Well, TRD HiLux has got a V6 supercharged petrol engine from its stable mate TRD Aurion. It was fast and furious, yet, I was wondering why? Does the tradies always hurry for something? The engine is reliable 4.0litre V6 petrol engine 225kW of power with 454Nm of torque. The body is extremely solid with more refined body kit including a more purposeful front grill with fog lamps. Added with dual cab sitting arrangement, it can be used as a family car as well.
The TRD brand is an important part of Toyota which means Toyota Racing and Development. But why marry a truck with a high powered brand that carries a supercharged V6 engine. Image and feelings may be the only reasons for such funny combination.
Power steering, automatic transmission and air conditioning are included as standard, hence, anyone can drive it. On the other side, it still keeps its secret on braking and safety devices, such as front disc brake but still keep using a humble braking drum at the rear axle. Side and curtain airbags are not available, nor traction control in that department as well. Therefore, I would still consider it as a commercial vehicle. But fuel economy is quite acceptable: about 13litre per 100 kms. However, people have to be reasonable. When you haul something, or have loaded with something or go for a sprint, it will use more fuel.
The HiLux provides an important platform for the tradespersons to put their stuff at the tray and a better sitting position than local utes, it is a successful formula for a tradesperson, who wants an invincible go anywhere truck with four wheel traction. The sales figures in Australia indicate that the HiLux is the third best selling vehicle in Australia. If it is a brand, it would have been standing at number 9. More importantly, the blurring up of white and blue collars worker means the

want to race it, forget about it. However, most blokes will race a straight line or just overtaking with full confidence. Well, it can do that kind of job beautifully. It is because the supercharge will help the engine to maximize its torque and power upon acceleration, rather than waiting for a turbo boost in a turbo petrol engine setup. If you are thinking of doing a lot of hauling, you should also consider putting in a heavy duty clutch, as most tradies would not haul too much. When you saw some cars on the James Bond movie, people will call that a hot Bond car. Mondeo was such kind of Bond car that everyone can own. The Mondeo that we had driven was a TDCi Diesel. Surprisingly it ticks all the boxes for a Bond and lovely family car.
hence, the middle passengers and even taller passengers can stretch out more. The general feeling is spacious and comfortable. But on the other hand, the hatch door of the Mondeo is a funny business. You either love it or hate it. If you love it, it is by far the biggest boot ever, if you hate it, it is very hollow.
To start with, the styling is very similar to the current shape of FG Falcon. It gives you somehow elegance, style, practicality and the European flair. You can feel the built quality that is above par with the other Australian stable mate.
As for power, it has 96kW of power, 320Nm of useable torque. Something worth mentioning is the six speed automatic transmission. It is as smooth as silk, seamlessly feeding the power through the auto gear box to the front wheels. I couldn’t find a better automatic gear at this price range. The strong character of the diesel engine could exhibit its enormous pulling power where as the fuel consumption of this turbo diesel is just a miserly 7.5 litre / 100km with a combined city and country drive.
The price of the Modeo model is just A$29,990 with a lot of safety and security updates and equipments. The TDCE sedan or hatch (as tested) with six speed automatic is just A$37,990. But the value is far more than its price. For a start, it has stability control, seven airbags, ABS - anti skid brakes, climate control air conditioning, trip computer, 17 inch alloy wheels, six stack CD player, multi-function steering wheel, parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, auto headlights and power windows. The whole package fits nicely into the luxury class. Interior is well laid out as well, it gives you a roomy feeling, good and supportive seats. Steering wheel is adjustable on reach and tilt. Something worth mentioning about the rear seating space, it has a better seating arrangement than the Australian Falcon. As it is powered via the front wheels,

The general feeling of the diesel engine plus the 6 speed automatic is that it is as strong as a cross box but can spring off like a miniature missile, and it is very flexible over its wide rev range. Yet, its high amount of torque never makes it as a sluggish problem. Instead, it has a lot of grunt but at the same time economical output, what an irony! The steering is superbly sharp even though the driving power is delivered from a front wheel drive car. The suspension is a firm but absorbent preposition. The set up works extremely well with ironing out any bumpy and broken bitumen. It works extremely well with any windy road such as the Great Ocean Road. Hence, it is a joy to sit in those comfy seats.

The engineering, built quality and comfort level are so good that the Mondeo is a real alternative to the locally made Ford Falcon. Yet, don’t let its look deceives you. It is not small. Some people will mistake it with the Ford Falcon with a hatch. So it is your choice. An European made 5 door Falcon hatch or a locally made Ford Falcon with 4 doors. I choose both, one for me and the other for my wife. What about you?
