Subaru WRX

Boy Racer that sells well

I must say I like the look of this model, it has a better profile all round. I first drove a WRX in 1997 when they first appeared on the market and back then they were very loose in the drive train, and the clutch and gearbox did not seem strong enough for the power on tap, but were still fun to drive because of the responsiveness of the engine and the general dynamics of the car. The raspy engine became annoying after a while though. I co-drove a WRX at the Bathurst 12-hour event some years ago, and it lasted about five hours. It was not the clutch or gearbox that stopped it, it was a broken timing chain, but you felt that the car overall was really not up to the job. However, no production car is up to a track like Bathurst! These days, the sloppiness and weakness has been mostly engineered out, although driving the car is not that different to earlier models in terms of handling and braking. It is probably a lot safer however, because it now has ESC (Electronic Stability Control) which Subaru calls VDC (Vehicle Dynamic Control). The main problem in those early cars was that they stuck like glue to the road and had a quite high limit, but inexperienced drivers would still stretch the limits of the car, which would suddenly become unglued very quickly, usually ending in disaster. You would be hard pressed to lose control of this car, it really is dynamically safe. Often, our safety guru’s forget that there is another side, it’s not all about airbags and ‘crashworthiness’. Basically, the handling has not changed much. When pushed hard into a

26 Drive-way

corner, it will understeer (front wheel skid), as any car does if you stay on the gas, but if you back off mid corner, it will change into mild oversteer (rear wheel skid). All of this is not sudden however. If you can take the WRX to a track, you can really get to know its limits and it is fun to switch off the ESC in this environment. The engine is still the 2.5 litre turbo, with an increase in power of 26kW, resulting in 195 kW at 6000 rpm. Torque is also increased to 343Nm, up from 320. It all gets delivered very smoothly and gets off the line better and easier than previous models thanks to the torque increase. The car is also quieter, which I like. I wonder why anyone would bother with the STi now, at $10,000 more. It still does not have a 6 speed box, but I’m not sure it needs it. 5 speeds are enough, but like most cars these days, it is still revving too hard at the highway limit. Brakes are great as usual, very powerful and trustworthy. You have to push very firmly to the get the ABS working, which is as it should be. At around $40,000 without options like Sat-Nav etc. it is still a great value package but not quite up to its rival, the Mitsubishi Evo X. Mind you, the Evo is way more expensive. The WRX is not for everyone, but I’m sure Subaru will sell plenty to the boy racers.

Mercedes Benz Sprinter 311 CDI When I was running a backpacker bus company, I came across the Sprinter. It was configurated as a bus. That means it has 14 seats. At that stage, it was by all means the best people mover that I came across. The second generation Sprinter was even better. For a start, it has ironed out some of the problems with its automatic transmission. It doesn’t need the driver to remember to put the gear into neutral before turning the engine off. I still remember vividly one of my coworkers rang me up and asking me how to start the engine when he refilled the Sprinter in a remote service station. The Sprinter that we have tested is a medium wheelbase. I would say it is similar to the size of an ambulance. Inside the Sprinter, you can find all the designs are catered for the comfort of the driver. There are places for holding invoices, delivery dockets and pockets to put pens etc. Although, it seems to be a big car, driving it was like bliss. Unlike some of the leading Japanese brands, the Sprinter and other European brands opted for a half bonnet front engine set up. I believe that makes sense, as Occupational Health and Safety regulations would agree with any one for a safer and better car, as when accident may happen. It has pre-tensioner seat belt and airbags. According to the government website www.howsafeisyourcar.com.au, it has an excellent crash rating. The car has a 2,148cc 4-cylinder intercooled turbo diesel engine. It produces 80kW of power and 280Nm of torque at 1,600-2,500 rpm. It complies with the Euro 4 standard and is ready for Euro 5 as well. As a matter of fact, the

Sprinter is very similar to the Volkswagen Crafter. However, I feel the Sprinter is better in terms of handing. Equipped with the optional 5 speed automatic transmission, the Sprinter is easy for anyone to drive. Perhaps, the automatic gear attracted me several years ago as rare equipment in the delivery van segment, rather than a boring 6 speed manual gear box. Just imagine, when you have to be a professional courier and on the road a lot of time, the automatic just saves you from stress on traffic and it can beat the time for delivery. Side mirrors are heated with split level of normal and wide angle view for the lower bottom part. When revisiting the driving comforts of the car, as I have said, it has more improvements on handling. Steering is powered as part of the standard equipment. Hence, the turning circle is just 13.6 metres. With the medium wheel base, it is just slightly wider and longer than that of a Japanese delivery van, but it gives you extra safety package on crash protection. It has state of the art safety package called as Adaptive Electronic Stability Program which includes ABS, EBD, ROM(Roll Over Mitigation), RMI(Roll Movement intervention) and USC (Under Steer Control) complimented with all disc brakes, it spells 5 stars safety in everyone’s term. All fitted with 235/65R16 Continential radial tyres on steel rims. It is a strong and versatile combination. Alloy wheel can be ordered as an option. No wonder why it is chosen to help various government services as their moving partner. The Australian Post and Ambulance Services in Victoria chose Sprinter as their reliable workhorse. My daughter loves the bench seats in the cargo bay. To her, the interior seems to be very comfortable for putting up a tent. As a matter of fact, European

ҁ‫!ݽ‬ᗉເЙ!Sprinter 311 CDI loves converting the Sprinter alike van into Campervan. And it is very popular, European and local Campervan manufacturers already have some ready made models. It has 10.5 cubic metres load capacity with a 1,565 wide opening barn rear door, which can easily help to take in a pallet by a fort lift. However, I like to see putting in additional sliding door on the driver’s side. That will help the driver to unload stuff; but obviously this will increase cost and selling price. As for pricing, it starts from $41,190. I recommend it anyone to consider buying a mid size van of short to long wheel base. Certainly it has lots of safety features and equipments that make life easier and more enjoyable when they are on the road.

Lexus GS 460 To be honest, we have limited understanding about the GS range. Well, The GS range probably sits in between the flagship LS range and the IS range; somehow, it’s an embarrassing situation. Not so, when you consider you have the luxury to get the same powerful engine of the big brother LS but potentially the freedom of handling the car as your very own driver’s car, and then we should treat the GS range with respect. Mechanically, it has the same 4.6 litre V8 from the LS range, which produce 255kW at 6,400 revs and 460Nm at 4,100 revs. A healthy increase of 47kW and 43Nm in comparing to its predecessor, it also shares the world leading technology of the eight speed automatic gear box. From this perspective, there are significant improvements on both power and torque. In terms of performance, it sprints from a stand still to 100km/h in just under 5.80 seconds and can reach a top speed limit of 240km/h. A report card handed down for a relatively big car as such is rather outstanding. Styling of the GS has received mild cosmetic makeover on its outlook and bumpers, the integrated steering wheel has an audio/telephone control, and the new blue headlights bring it on par with the hybrid GS series. New auto input jack for portable music devises. New security door system runs as when the car starts to move. For a rather new experience, the front seats are now equipped with cooling function for more comfortable driving experience

In terms of our driving experience of the GS, well, we liked the way how it worked. We did not really expect it to be a sports car alike driving; yet, it was very responsive in acceleration. Sound insulation should be best known across all Lexus range, we felt we were cocooned to a void where everything was buzzing outside the window. That’s somehow rather deceiving to realise how speed quietly could have accelerated to over 100km/h legal limit. I can tell you that it was swift and agile in particular over the corners and bends. With stability control remains in action, it helps almost any driver to handle the car like a professional. Well basically, it keeps the car straight and points it to where you want it intended to be. The pedal swift on the steering wheel helps for a more interactive driving experience. But I am satisfied with the updated 8 speed automatic gear box that gives a wider ratio for power to spread around but still maintaining a sports and aggressive character. New 5 spoke alloy wheels plus side mirrors and the door handles all have received some treatments to have made it more aerodynamic, efficient by reducing unwanted wind noise intrusion sleeking into the cabin as well. Road manner is not as conservative or poised to be. It is more lively and engaging than the big brother LS range. Suspension has been tuned to a maximum level of readiness that allows you to feel the road condition - a mixture of comfort but firm, yet never unpleasant. I believe it has also truly received a really good look at the steering system for more communicative experience.

As usual, it has some maximum airbag protection on boasting 10 airbags and pollen filter air conditioning. The other luxury items such as dual zone climate control, excellent audio system, and interior design are just industry standard in Lexus’s term Well, that’s the way we see the GS460. It has a slightly conservative but sportier outlook; but the recent update on engine, gearbox setup and mild cosmetic on its shape all help it to come out to its true stance - a luxury driver’s car. You may not like it, but it is there to entertain you. The price starts from A$138,000 for the V8. An urban explorer Volvo XC70 D5 I have to confess that I am a true Volvo believer and I had two Volvos before. Hence, I might be biased. But who will not fall in love with a new Volvo? The answer is: certainly there are some around, but not much. The new Volvos have better style and curves. I believe it is to help the car company to rejuvenate its image and at the same time to consolidate excellent innovation in design, safety and engineering. We can say that XC70 is the bigger brother of V70; yet, it is quite different. XC90 is of course a different kettle of fish. The choice is a normal wagon, a high performance AWD XC70 or a more SUV body style XC90? The XC70 is based on the V70 but with a higher seating position, and then add on an All Wheel Drive system. It is simple and refined that you may think that XC70 is an off roader. But don’t be disappointed, it is very capable for travelling to a civilized campsite around town. The styling of the car, let me be frank, I like it. It has some major changes done in the front and rear. The styling is very modern and matches the more energetic little brother C30, with a more stylish shape of the light cluster. People coming from an Asian country and around my age somehow normally prefer bigger car, but not a ship; then this car is for you. I have also to remind you of its lot of excellent safety credentials as well. It is spacious inside out, gives you better view from the electrically adjusted comfortable captain seat. Ground clearance is good, but people don’t have to climb in and jump out like a SUV.

The interior is well appointed with easy to read organic shape reading clusters. Waterfall styled audio and air conditioning controls. It is still fresh and will probably going to be a Volvo modern classic. As for the car’s performance, we are right on the dot with the D5. It has a revised 2.4 litre five cylinder turbo-diesel engine that produces 138kW and 400Nm. Matching the meaty power and torque is the six speed Geartronic automatic with simulated manual mode gear box. The Safety and equipment list can be as long as a Christmas wishing list. But it is all there. Worth mentioning is the Side Impact Protection system. Both sides of the car are traditionally the weak part of all cars. With the Side Impact Protection system in place, Volvo has put in extra effort to make the cabin stronger to save all occupants Another safety feature is the Collision Warning with Auto-Brake (CWAB). It can detect a possible collision when driving on a high way. It will warn the driver with light and apply pressure to the brake. Should the impact become avoidable, it will brake the car for the driver. On the road, I have mentioned it is bigger and spacious, but behaving like a sport wagon. I think this is a fair comment. The turbo diesel gives life and muscle to accentuate the true character of XC70 D5 – an urban explorer. Equipped with long travel suspension system, ride quality is excellent when it

Honda City VTI-L a City for all seasons

Drive-way ٙൢ! Edmund Chow

It is hard to find something different for the gorgeous looking Honda Jazz but with a little bit more regal or conservative. But Honda presented the “City” that re-vitalized the former 3 doors hatch from the 1980’s. This Honda City is quite totally different from the modern Jazz that it steers itself into the premium light car sedan market.

stern V look statement for a well composed executive look. It results in giving a much bigger and more purposeful posture. Accompanying with the 16” alloy wheels, and a higher waist line together with the tall boot, the packaging is more appealing to people who are after down sizing in preferring smaller cars for easy parking than previously corporate executive large cars.

Pricing is something different from the Honda Jazz, it demands more for the dollar. Yet, it gives you extra in terms of safety equipment and internal appointments. Internal finishing is excellent, as Honda always does a great job in design and workmanship. The VTi-L that we have tested was equipped with telescopic steering, 16 inch alloy wheels, chrome door handles, fog light, better trim and leather bound steering wheel.

For the interior, the height adjustable sitting position is excellent, accompanied with centre arm rest. The multi functional steeling wheel looks familiar with the Jazz and Civic family line. Gauges are more traditional but easy to read. Auto and air conditioning equipments are very friendly and within reach as well. Functionally, the audio system is of a premium grade as in-built audio system is almost impossible to change. Air conditioning works extremely well and doesn’t seem to draw power from the engine at all.

The exterior is totally different from its stable mate the Honda Jazz. However, mechanically, they are pretty much identical. The City offers two models; both are powered by a 1.5litre SOHC i-VTEC engine. 88 kW power and 145 Nm. Fuel economy is compatible to its segment standard. The 5 speed manual or the new 5 speed automatic returns for 6.3 or 6.6 litre respectively on 91 RON fuel consumption. For what you can get for the dollar is a pretty much a more Honda Legend looking but much smaller car with a much affordable price tag. If I may say the Honda Jazz is more feminine, then the Honda City is more masculine. It uses more chrome on the front grille to match with the headlights to form a more

On the road. Given the fact that it is a 1.5 litre engine, I think to my preference, it is slightly under power. Well, you pay for your excitement. But this Honda City steers itself to a more relaxed pace and rather noisy character when pushed. I must agree with Honda that this is obviously not a racing car or other legendary Honda car like NSX, S2000, new Legend, Civic Type R etc. But I welcome the idea of a 5 speed auto. Once you are cruising, it is settled. It is smooth and refined. Suspension is nice and the steering is good with its electric assisted power steering. Do I want to buy it? Yes, if I have to compare it with others such as Yaris sedan, Barina sedan which are also in the light car market; however, they are more affordable. Then, the choice is yours. The

10-07-09 No. 124

City is a newer car with 5 speed automatic, ABS, Electronic Brake Force Distribution(EBD), Brake Assist but without traction control. Which one will you choose? City, Yaris or Barina. I will go for City with full length curtain airbags, dual front and side airbags, double load force limiters with pre-tensioners for front seaters. Those are the things that we absolutely need. My suggestion If you need a light premium sedan, then this is the one that you will be looking for. The Honda badge brings a lot of credibility to its pricing. I believe it’s worth it. But if you don’t mind other “slightly” bigger cars, then, I will start looking for Honda Civic sedan, Toyota Corolla, Volkswagen Jetta, KIA Cerato and Mitsubishi Lancer etc.

Holden Barina 1.6 litre 3 door hatch It is a lovely car to drive. From my memory this is perhaps the fourth manual car that we have test driven. Pricing may be the most important factor within the Barina light car market in Australia. However, it is priced at a fierce cut throat price tag that profit becomes minimal. The price of 3 door hatch starts from $14,490. However, this doesn’t mean the Barina is a sub standard car. On the contrary, it has recently scored 4 stars crash ratings with ANCAP, as a pleasant surprise, coming out from a lot of effort from the Global GM and Holden engineering department. Exterior The Barina is a bread and butter type of light car for Holden. Unlike the other big brother from South Korea “Cruize”, Barina will be the entry level of all Holden ranges. It also carries the corporate signature of the Holden Commodore front grille. And I would say that is the nearest image which they share. Apart from the badge, the new Barina is a different animal. It is stylish but does not have a very distinctive character apart from the front grille. This may not be a bad idea, as different people have different taste and expectation.

very clever and stylish. Audio unit is compatible with MP3 CDs; it works well but not of a premium quality. There is a volume control at the steering wheel. At one stage, I was complaining about the lack of cup holders to my co-worker, however, I found them at the bottom part of the console. Dashboard has a practical layout that people will be able to read clearly. The engine It has an ECOTEC 1.6L DOHC and dual Continuous Variable Cam Phasing. 80kW of power and 144Nm of torque. This update version is on par with the rest of the light car competitors such as Toyota Yaris, Hyundai Accent and KIA Rio. Fuel economy has been improved to 7.0 litre per 100 kms for manual gear box and 7.6 litre for the auto gear box.

As a Holden, the manufacturing quality of Barina is good but not the best. I found some problems with its noise insulation at the left hand rear window. I heard wind noises coming through. Apart from this I would say this is a good car.

Safety The latest update of Barina includes the additional side-impact airbags that was also designed to give extra protection to the thorax and head, in the event of collision. Body structure has also received a long awaited improvement to the body shell. It has three clearly defined load parts that are engineered for absorbing front end collision while still supporting the cage structure of the passenger area. Better high strength steel was used to enhance the “B” structure of the car in further protecting the occupants.

Interior The style of the central console is based on the air conditioning vents. It is

On the road It is smooth and surprisingly powerful. May be it is a light car, I found the 1.6

Road manner was good in cornering and the suspension system worked well to filter rough and coarse road surfaces. The manual gear box worked well with the pull and slot mechanism for the reverse gear. That also added extra security to prevent accidental wrong gear changing. Do I like it? Well, apart from the Holden corporate signature grille, I love this car especially for its pricing and equipment level. But I think its outlook, cosmetically, may not be my cup of tea. However, considering the recent safety upgrade, and the after sales services and support, this Holden Barina is clearly a serious consideration in anyone’s word. Frugal Jet fighter Volkswagen Passat CC 2.0 TDI

Edmund Chow

Volkswagen recent initiative to get into the more premium vehicle market was spear headed by the Passat CC. From a distance it looks similar to Mercedes CLS. I believe the comparison should stop there. Frankly, I have not driven the CLS. But what makes the CC interesting is the fact that it is a totally different species that should stand out elegantly from the VW camp. For a start the Passat has swag of goodies to make it a better car. It has dynamic chassis control, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Front Assist and Park Assist. Someone thought that all those high end technologies should usually be found in the Swedish car companies such as Volvo and Saab. The choice is simply between a very punchy V6 FSI with all wheel drive or the fugal diesel 2.0TDI. We had done the 2.0TDI and the performance was remarkable. It is hard to tell the importance of the all wheel drive that was missing on our loan car. But we try to compare a Toyota Aurion V6 supercharged, which is also running on front wheel drive. The CC is different and we should say it is a new experience. The high level of torque is available from 1,500 rpm. That kind of torque enables the driver to feel the strong pulling and push momentum of the vehicle. The drive control, the tyre and ESP system all hold the front wheel onto the road and that the massive power is under control. It is extremely important for a front wheel drive car to be able to achieve that. We were actually surprised to know that it was only a front wheel drive. Normally under the legal speed limit, this kind of strong urge will almost satisfy 95% of experienced drivers. The six speed DSG auto gear box

matches well with the diesel 2.0TDI as it prepares for instant and speedy up gear or down gear manoeuvre in no time. The paddle shifts help better gear changing as well. The styling of the car It resembles the CLS, but it is an elegant car by itself. It has a smoother aerodynamic, by reducing the height of the car, in comparing the normal Passat. It is easy to tell the difference between Passat and Passat CC. With frameless window and fresh upmarket luxurious equipment, interior and exterior decoration, the Passat CC stands out even amongst Mercedes, BMW and Audi. However, I have a comment about the front styling; I think there is something missing in creating a separate identity. It definitely needs something extremely special or even outrageous. Interior I like the active climate control for the front seats which is available among some important goodies for summer and winter climate control. It ventilates and improves real driving comfort. Better touch screen navigation system has replaced the daggy switch that takes forever to key in your destination. The highlight of the Passat CC May be it is the Active Cruise Control (ACC) and the Front assist. I went for Moe to test drive the car. I put the ACC on 110kms cruise. A truck overtook me and cut into my lane in 20 metres in front of me. The radar of ACC picked up

30 Drive-way

the signal and instantly reduced the speed to 80kms. This gave me a breathing space of more than 50 metres. I believe this device should be made standard in the near future. Subsequently, we have test driven the new generation 6 Golf, it is also available as an option. Secondly, the Park Assist. I have tried the Park Assist on the VW Tiguan. It can auto park the car seamlessly if you choose to let it parallel park for you on street shopping strip. If you are interested, you can search my demonstration on uTube with the Volkswagen Tiguan. Conclusion The CC is a better car. It is vital for VW to establish it as an upmarket alternative. However, a new model name may help to boost its image as a sport coupe, not just adding CC to the Passat. People are prepared to pay more for its engineering and image. Just like some Porsches are powered by VW engine. Yet, Passat CC 125kW TDI is available from just $54,990; as for the more powerful V6 FSI plus all wheel drive system, it is from $65,990. 07-08-09 No. 128

New Honda Odyssey – 4th Generation My next door neighbour is a die hard Honda supporter having got Accord Euro, CR-V and an Odyssey. What interested me is the fact that the Odyssey has won a number of prizes over the best people mover title in the last couple of years. Almost everyone knows (from reading this column), I love my egg-shaped Toyota Tarago 1992 with 450,000kms on the clock. So you know how much I love it. It is a kind of sour-lemon feeling that Odyssey has been winning the best people mover award for a long time. Eventually, my interest in the Odyssey grows over the year. My perception about the Odyssey was that it was spacious. Equipped with the aero pack with more aggressive, modern or cult image, I believe this is the kind of macho image that most male drivers would prefer. This is not to say that the Odyssey does not appeal to female drivers, but a more aggressive modelling does make a stance rather than the humble early Odyssey models released a few years back. Basically, the aero pack includes Aero front and rear bumpers, aero side skirts and front fog lights. I love it because of the amount of chrome used on the front grille and bumpers make it stand out more. You would feel its aerodynamics by just admiring it from a distance. My favour topic – Safety The 2009 Odyssey for the first time has upgraded with Honda’s version of traction control of which they call it as “Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA). It helps tremendously with road safety and increases driver’s confidence in handling difficult situation. In the coming years, it will be mandated for new cars to be equipped with similar system to reduce road accidents. The other thing that I like is the Motion adaptive electric power steering. When things get out of control, the system helps with steering and works seamlessly with the VSA to correct steering problems in order to avoid accidents. Pedestrian’s safety has

28 Drive-way

been looked at as well. There is the revolutionary G-Con technology that helps with absorbing the impact on pedestrians and help creating a better crumple zone to protect the occupants of the car. In such case, the unlikelihood of physical injuries will be minimized. Last but not the least, the centre seat of the second row has been upgraded to a three- point seat belt. It has also increased anchorage for child seat and baby capsule as well. Another impressive feature is the full length air curtain that stretches from the first to the third row to provide extra protective support to prevent head injury for all outbound occupants. What other features that I like? I like the interior decorations, the wood grain décor. The simple but well arranged air conditioning unit. The gear knob, located near to the console, is so ego metrically close to the dash. It includes overdrive button neatly incorporated in the tiny but functional knob. I like the speed read out and its presentation. It is neat and very attractive. I also like the powered third row that can be folded into the luggage well just by pressing of a button. It helps creating a generous luggage carrying capacity. What I don’t like? I am surprised to see that Honda prefers to put in a classical analogue looking CD radio unit to the Odyssey. May be the Sat Naf system is too expensive in their price list that it is not offered any more; but it completely destroyed the design of the interior. I would recommend putting back a touch screen audio visual entertainment unit with reverse parking monitor. My reason is simple; the Odyssey is such a long car that can sits 7 passengers comfortably, hence rear vision should be limited. Therefore it warrants a reverse parking monitor system.

07-08-09 No. 128

How does it feel? I love the car. Even though it is not on my wishing list, the car responses beautifully with its clever i-VTEC engine system with a 5 speed automatic gear box. It matches its rather aggressive stance. The engine is just a four cylinder 132kW engine but it has the beauty of both worlds, functional, quick response but also economical as well. Honda claimed a combine 8.9litre for 100kms for urban and freeway travelling. Would I buy it? I would recommend my next door neighbour to trade in his older version. Safety comes first. My preference does not mean anything if it is not safety orientated. Enjoy life and upgrade you car with traction control, ABS and better airbag system. Toyota Corolla Ultima 1.8L

Drive-way ٙൢ Edmund Chow

One of my favorite cars was a corolla. It seems that it never goes out of fashion. I was talking about our 1992 Toyota Corolla 5 door hatch. Recently, we test driven a Corolla Ultima 4 door sedan. I think it is very nice. Then, I began to question about the pricing. It is perhaps the most expensive Corolla ever, as it has leather seats, remote keyless entry and push button for the start or stop of the engine. However, the most impressive feelings that I had with the Corolla was its built quality. Things are solid and well designed.

Satellite Navigation system, of which I believe is a little disappointing; but the audio and air conditioning system is doing its job. Steering wheel is reach and rake adjustable. Driver’s seat can be adjusted by slide, height and rake angle. It does not have lumbar support but, I found the seats are very supportive. The quality of the leather seats is very nice as well. Noise level is generally low on normal; however, if it is travelling on coarse concrete surface, it can be a nightmare about its noise level.

Toyota seemed to have been holding a number of key elements for its on-going success. Quality and workmanship seem to be the best known secrets of Toyota’s world wide success. However, it can fail as well. Yet on average, it is reliable, affordable and seems to be longer lasting.

Everyone knows that I am interested in car safety. This corolla can be crowned as the safest Corolla. My reasons are that it has ABS, EBD, VSC, BA and TC that helps with stopping more effectively and prevents sliding uncontrollably. It comes with ventilated disc brakes for all four wheels. In addition, it is also equipped with full length curtain air bags. All seats are equipped with three-point seat belt and head restrain as well. Those features thus making it a 5 stars crash rating Corolla. Styling of the 4 door sedan is a little bit conservative, but it makes a Corolla to last longer. Completed with a set of alloy rims of 16 inches, it does help the Corolla stands out a little bit.

The Corolla sedan shares with other 5 door hatch models in using the same mechanical platform such as engine and gear box. The engine is a 1.8 litre petrol engine with 100kW at 6,000 rpm and 175 Nm of torque at 4,400. It is not the most powerful in its class, but it is doing its job perfectly. Fuel consumption is around 7.5 litres per 100 kms, combined cycle and as claimed. The styling is very similar to a Volkswagen Jetta and from a distance you can’t tell the difference between them. I was generalizing here, but you’ll get the general impression.

Apart from the auto headlights, auto dim interior rear mirror and rain sensor, the Corolla does provide a very good package for everyone. Toyota offer a three year/100,000 km warranty on their Corolla. However, some other Japanese and Korean companies are offering 5 years unlimited warranty.

Internal setting is elegant but not over the top. It does not come with a

Corolla to her? Yes, I will. But on the other side, there are a number of German, Korean and Japanese cars that are also very competitive as well. There are a few things that people have to think about. Do I settle with a 4 speed automatic gear box, or rather a 5th gear or even 6th gear that will help me to save fuel on freeways? What are my driving patterns, short or long trip? How much will I spend if I need spare parts? Are Toyota’s parts cheaper and more reliable? Do I really like a Corolla and what are my options? For me, it is a hard choice. I will start from the pricing difference, the equipment level that I would like to have in my car. Such as: a touch screen satellite navigation system, a reverse camera for reverse parking, plus a colour monitor at the dash. And, something more, all the safety equipments that I can get from a Corolla. If that is your preference then a Corolla is the right choice for you. In general, this is a car that will not fail easily. It is maturing in every aspect such as mechanism and overall design. It is a safe choice. However, other offers are also generous as well. Good luck, do some research before buying your new Corolla.
