Subaru WRX
Boy Racer that sells well
I must say I like the look of this model, it has a better profile all round. I first drove a WRX in 1997 when they first appeared on the market and back then they were very loose in the drive train, and the clutch and gearbox did not seem strong enough for the power on tap, but were still fun to drive because of the responsiveness of the engine and the general dynamics of the car. The raspy engine became annoying after a while though. I co-drove a WRX at the Bathurst 12-hour event some years ago, and it lasted about five hours. It was not the clutch or gearbox that stopped it, it was a broken timing chain, but you felt that the car overall was really not up to the job. However, no production car is up to a track like Bathurst! These days, the sloppiness and weakness has been mostly engineered out, although driving the car is not that different to earlier models in terms of handling and braking. It is probably a lot safer however, because it now has ESC (Electronic Stability Control) which Subaru calls VDC (Vehicle Dynamic Control). The main problem in those early cars was that they stuck like glue to the road and had a quite high limit, but inexperienced drivers would still stretch the limits of the car, which would suddenly become unglued very quickly, usually ending in disaster. You would be hard pressed to lose control of this car, it really is dynamically safe. Often, our safety guru’s forget that there is another side, it’s not all about airbags and ‘crashworthiness’. Basically, the handling has not changed much. When pushed hard into a

corner, it will understeer (front wheel skid), as any car does if you stay on the gas, but if you back off mid corner, it will change into mild oversteer (rear wheel skid). All of this is not sudden however. If you can take the WRX to a track, you can really get to know its limits and it is fun to switch off the ESC in this environment. The engine is still the 2.5 litre turbo, with an increase in power of 26kW, resulting in 195 kW at 6000 rpm. Torque is also increased to 343Nm, up from 320. It all gets delivered very smoothly and gets off the line better and easier than previous models thanks to the torque increase. The car is also quieter, which I like. I wonder why anyone would bother with the STi now, at $10,000 more. It still does not have a 6 speed box, but I’m not sure it needs it. 5 speeds are enough, but like most cars these days, it is still revving too hard at the highway limit. Brakes are great as usual, very powerful and trustworthy. You have to push very firmly to the get the ABS working, which is as it should be. At around $40,000 without options like Sat-Nav etc. it is still a great value package but not quite up to its rival, the Mitsubishi Evo X. Mind you, the Evo is way more expensive. The WRX is not for everyone, but I’m sure Subaru will sell plenty to the boy racers.

It is some thing that I’ve been caught off guard. After teaching for a while in the community hall, then, I noticed that I’ve to write something that is more off guard.
previous Liberty. It may be a good strategy as leaving the Forester size may suit the ever increasing number of family wagon buyers.
Past experience told me that Subaru represented high quality of car making; it’s a different philosophy or even being praised for being the Japanese version of the Swedish Volvo. To me, it is bigger than I thought; but to my surprise, it is still a very truly Subaru.
The car has a CVT transmission that makes me feel it needs more work for getting its energy out. I feel like it needs to work slightly a little bit harder to get the juice out of the engine. But generally, you wouldn’t get the excitement of the WRX. You need to press the throttle harder to get the strong, firm reaction and sweet roaring of the highly acclaimed boxer engine. On the other hand, it needs more petrol to keep it going, well sort of just 8.8litre or so for 100kms.
It is strange to get a six seater in a more traditional seven seater set up. It would be much easier to sell it as a seven seater; but Subaru chose not to follow the crowd. Instead, they wanted to stand out. I would say they have made a strong and valid statement. No matter how you look at it, it retains a strong resemblance of the Subaru family, even though it is slightly smaller than a Trebecca and larger than the
The steering is nice, something that can be sourced easily from the parts department of Forester or WRX etc. An additional paddle shift makes your gear interaction far more interesting. Suspension is well balanced for a family wagon, but not too extreme on either the firm or soft side. It is just right.

Apart from that, the cabin is well designed. Having said that, it is a bit odd to take out the mid row middle seat just to make room for the hand rest and cup holder. To my dear daughter’s enjoyment, she likes the huge DVD and leather seats. Well, would you like to buy one? It depends on your life style. Do you like to stand out from the crowd? The Subara certainly is and entertains you in that way. I feel the car is slightly larger than most mid size family wagons; but it has a boxer engine, that confuses me. Yet it is convenient to pack all the gear for a camping holiday. Well, put it this way, when we grow up or grow old, we need a little bit more of personal luxury, so, a few more day packs or luggage would easily fill our car. The Liberty is perhaps the key for a happy and packed holiday in venturing out for a wonderful driving trip in Australia.
