to In and Around Magazine February 2015 We made it! We made it through January! The complete reverse of December, no spending, no eating indulgent food, no going out, and for some, no alcohol! I like to spend this time of year establishing a new healthy routine by cooking meals from scratch. Not just healthier but tastier and cheaper too! My children are more likely to eat healthy meals when they have helped to prepare the dish. You just need to find the time! I would just like to remind everyone the idea behind our cover photos. Our magazine represents everyday life with a local spin. If you ever have a story to share, local information or local events please do get in touch. Wishing you all a fun February! Sarah, Editor

Used Car - Prestige Executive Saloons For: Smart styling, driving pleasure, economy, equipment, value Against: All the other executives have got one too Mercedes E Class (2009 to present)
A
new model of the Jaguar XF arrives this year, but the existing model has been around since 2007. In fact, all the prestige manufacturers have had their latest generation large saloons available since at least 2011, so now is the perfect time to pick up a second hand one. With a maximum budget of £18,000, here is my pick of the bunch. BMW 5 Series (2010 to present) The undisputed king of the executive saloons is better than ever in its current incarnation. From the handsome styling and perfect proportions to the beautifully balanced handling, everything about this car is spot on. Leather seats and satnav come as standard so every model has that touch of luxury, together with acres of space and a supple ride. The 3.0 litre diesel is awesome but the 2.0 litre is fine for most people’s needs with 185bhp, a 0-60 time of 8.1 seconds and economy of up to 65mpg. I found a 2010 model with 58k on it, a snip at £13,000.

Mercedes’ venerable E class has long been everything from the MD’s luxury express to the station taxi. The styling on the latest version is controversial but certainly imposing. The E Class is all about comfort and prestige coupled with bomb proof build quality and this one certainly doesn’t disappoint. With acres of space, the comfiest of seats, an effortless ride and superb refinement, you can drive across Europe without breaking into a sweat. The 2.2 litre diesel is a bit sluggish, better to go for the 3.0 litre E350 CDI which from 2011 boasts 265bhp and a top whack of 155 mph. A 2011 car with a modest 33k miles on it and all the goodies will set you back 17 grand. For: Comfort, space, refinement, solid image Against: Debateable styling, a bit thirsty Jaguar XF (2007 to present) The first of the “new” Jags, the XF is sleek and svelte, more like a coupé than a saloon. The interior is truly a lovely place to be with leather and wood everywhere and some slick features like the pop up gear column and rotating air vents. The handling is excellent without seriously compromising the ride, although it is not as good as the Merc. Originally available with a 2.7 litre diesel that was behind the opposition, from
2009 it was upgraded to a smooth 3.0 litre with 235bhp. There’s also a 2.2 but that’s a bit coarse. The bigger engine gets to 62mph in 6.7 seconds yet still manages a commendable 52mpg. Expect to pay £15,500 for a 2011 model with less than 40k under its belt. For: Performance, handling, sleek looks, classy interior Against: A bit old hat now, not much room in the back Lexus GS (2011 to present) Although it’s a Japanese car aimed squarely at the American market, the GS is still well worth a look. The styling hasn’t really evolved enough but inside you will a sumptuous interior with every bit of kit known to man fitted as standard. The Lexus is incredibly refined with a magic carpet ride that few others can match. As the American’s don’t really do diesels, the one to go for is the 450h petrol hybrid. A combination of a 3.5 litre V6 and two electric motors generates 292bhp and whisks this heavy car up to 62 in 5.9 seconds. The build quality and attention to detail is extraordinary, up there with a Rolls. They’re a tad expensive, a 2011 plate with 25k on it comes in at £18,000. For: Equipment, comfort, eerie refinement Against: Ungainly looks, lifeless handling

T
he traditional Brit skiing holiday involves a week of dawn to dusk downhill work followed by exhausted evenings sipping Gluhwein in an overpriced bar. I have a confession to make: now I’ve passed the age of 40, I’m simply not up to it; three days of skiing and my legs just stop working. So, last year I came up with the perfect compromise, a holiday that combined skiing, a couple of days sightseeing and even a bit of winter sun – what could be better. My wife and I, along with a couple of likeminded friends, flew into Malaga in early January along with a load of leathery expats returning from their Christmas breaks back in the UK. With glorious sunshine and temperatures in the low 20s, I began to see the appeal of moving to the Costa del Sol. We picked up a hire car at the airport and headed up into the mountains of the Sierra Nevada to our first port of call, the spectacular Moorish city of Granada. We stayed in a fairly basic hotel in the centre of the city with clean rooms, friendly service and a first rate breakfast, not bad for 60 euros a night. It was also very handy for the numerous restaurants and tapas bars in the pedestrian area of the Calle Navas. Granada is 2000 feet above sea level so it’s a bit cooler than the coast, but a stroll around the old town in the sun was still a very nice way to work up an appetite for dinner. 8
inandaround
The next day was devoted to skiing. The Sierra Nevada resort is only 20 miles away from Granada but it still takes 50 minutes to get there on the hair raising mountain roads. There are 79 pistes in the complex but most of them are not too challenging and some wouldn’t even qualify as nursery slopes in most resorts. The best one for my money is Aguila; it’s not especially difficult but at 6km long with a vertical drop of 1300m it provides plenty of entertainment. Lift passes and ski hire are pretty good value for money and there are a couple of decent restaurants at the bottom of the lifts. To be honest, after three days you’ve skied every run worth skiing at Sierra Nevada so I think we got it just right. Granada is a fantastic city for sightseeing and the two days we spent looking around were not nearly enough to do it justice. The Alhambra Palace, described by some as the most beautiful building in the world, deserves a day in its own right and then there’s the staggeringly majestic cathedral and El Banuelo, an Arab bathhouse dating back to the 11th century. The old town is an intriguing place to wander round and the Albaican, a Muslim quarter perched on a hilltop above the city, is well worth a visit. For the final two days of our holiday we drove back to the coast and on to the snazzy resort of Marbella. Marbella has a reputation of being
a hangout for retired gangsters and hairdressers but it’s actually a very upmarket town and most of the clubs and bars are still open, even in the depths of winter. Our equally upmarket hotel had a heated pool so there was a chance to spend some time swimming and sunbathing, although you had to dry off quickly to avoid feeling the chill. Swimming in the sea was out of the question, although I did see some hardy souls doing just that. Mainly, Marbella is a place for pottering around, admiring the yachts in the marina, shopping, eating and drinking. I enjoyed our combination holiday a lot more than a dedicated skiing trip. It was more relaxing, more interesting and ultimately far more enjoyable. One thing that surprised me was that it was also cheaper, partly because of the saving on ski hire and lift passes, partly because hotels and eating out were markedly less expensive. I’ll definitely do it again.

2015 – Back to the Future in the Garden!
2
015 has arrived, any surviving Turkey’s can breathe a sigh of relief and I’ve already bagged a ticket for this year’s Chelsea Flower Show, so now is as good a time as any to reflect on what direction I think this country’s £9 billion gardening industry will take this year. The recession in recent years (particularly mine..!) has undoubtedly had a major influence on how we use our gardens, what we spend on them and, indeed, how we view them as part of our daily lives. An obvious reaction to all this austerity has been the surge in popularity of the grow your own movement but a less obvious and slightly concerning one (it was on yesterday’s Radio 2 Jeremy Vine show, so it must be true…) is the growing prediliction for burying Granny and Grandpa (once they’ve passed on of course!) under the apple tree alongside their beloved Fido and Tiddles! Thankfully, I’ve yet to be asked to build a “garden of rest,” nor unearthed anything larger than Fido and Tiddles (deceased) whilst digging in customers’ borders, but there has certainly been a lot more
10 inandaround
interest in having defined areas of the garden for growing food and cut flowers. All this fits in nicely with the general theme of house owners wanting to produce their own delicious food (particularly, more interesting vegetables than potatoes and carrots!) and encouraging the kids to put their mobile devices down and get outside to commune with nature. For those who are fortunate enough to not have to worry about growing one’s own, the addition of a swimming pool or spa remains a popular lifestyle choice - together with the essential pool house and entertaining areas, naturally!
all things wild and wonderful will continue to gather momentum, and rare, difficult plants will be replaced with more simple and old fashioned flowers reminiscent of our childhood. Dahlia’s and chrysanthemums had a great year in 2014 and I think this year the same resurgence will happen with the likes of fuschias, gladioli, canterbury bells and carnations. Equally, single flowers which allow easy access for pollinators will continue to rise in popularity, but I think the big shift will be towards planting schemes that make more use of shrubs – which have been neglected for too long. Welcome back to the gardening inner circle!
For the rest of us who have to pop down to the local Leisure Centre to have a splash around, there has been a significant shift towards more natural, ecologically sound garden layouts utilising native trees and plants - which sit far better in our landscapes than often beautiful, but nonetheless alien species. DIY meadows continue to increase in popularity and, with the ready availability of wildflower turf pre-planted with the right combination of plants for your particular requirements, a lot of the guess work is eliminated and you can be guaranteed a buzzing hive of activity in just a few short weeks!
Natural stone will continue to be the hard landscaping material of choice – particularly when fashioned into features such as curving dry stone walls or retaining beds. Recycling appropriate materials, be they industrial artefacts or paving from reclamation yards, is set to rise in popularity and as long as someone has the vision (look no further!) to find the appropriate garden use for, let’s say, an old tap, then it’s a win, win situation for everyone!
The photograhs show one I made in a garden in Dorset which had the benefit of being adjacent to a river and is now home to a myriad of wildlife including bees, butterflies, water voles and grass snakes. Our new found obsession with

Britain – the world leader in online shopping
A
recent report from Ofcom reveals that we Brits lead the world when it comes to buying things online. In 2014 we spent around £2000 per head, more than twice as much as any other European country. This compares to £1170 in America, the home of the tech industry. The multitude of people who did the vast majority of their Christmas shopping online may not be surprised by this, but what factors are driving these remarkable statistics? One of the most obvious things is the uptake of broadband in this country. Last year, 84% of households had broadband access and an increasing proportion of that broadband is of the superfast fibre optic variety. Broadband is actually available to 96% of households now, though not everyone chooses to or can afford to use it, and our connections are the cheapest in Europe. The adoption of smartphones is another factor. 54% of every man, woman and child in the country now own a smartphone, once again the highest proportion in Europe. More and more of us are using our phones to go online too, aided by the ready availability of 3G connectivity, the rapid rollout of 4G and shared Wifi access schemes such as BT Openzone. Many of the established “bricks and mortar” retailers have been quick to establish online trading platforms. Firms like ASOS and Amazon have set the bar extremely high when it comes to ease and convenience for online shopping. As a rule of thumb, it should take no more than 4 clicks to find what you’re looking for and, once you’ve set up your account, just one more click to buy it. The Amazon Fire Phone even has software that allows you to photograph a product, identify it and, if it is sold by Amazon, take you to the relevant webpage. But the high street retailers are not far behind every step of the way. Companies like Curry’s/ PC World, Argos and John Lewis have invested heavily in ecommerce and it’s interesting to see that their trading performance is far stronger than those that got left behind such as Morrison’s and Debenhams. Even small retail businesses with just one or two stores are developing ecommerce sites rather than just having an online presence rather like a digital brochure.
quick and comparatively cheap to get their goods to consumers. Even so, a lot of people are not prepared to wait 2 or 3 days to receive the goodies they have just bought. In response to this, many retailers have developed hybrid systems such as click and collect which allow customers to order online and then collect the same day from their local store. Retailers with a large number of smaller stores such as Argos have found this model particularly successful. Much is said about boarded up shop fronts on our high streets but the truth is that more online start-ups go bust than conventional retailers. Those closed down shops have as much to do with high business rates, expensive parking and the recession as with competition from online. Retailers used to complain that shoppers looked at a product in the store, then went home and bought it online because it was cheaper. These days, research suggests that people browse online to find the product they are interested in, then go to see it in the flesh and buy it in the store. Bricks and mortar retailers have a number of advantages over online. They can merchandise their products, they can use salesmanship to upsell and the buyer can walk out of the store with it in their hand. A Harrods bag says a lot more about you than an Amazon box. Britain is a nation of consumers, more so than almost any other country other than America. It appears the cult of see it, want it, have it is alive and well.
Britain is a small country with relatively good road links and this has helped the online retailers because it is inandaround

Chocolate fudge brownie
I
can’t tell you how dense and rich this brownie is; it is gooey and intense and a truly wonderful sweet treat. And, better than that, it is simple and easy to make! If you like chocolate then you will love this and make it again and again. Ingredients: 250g dark chocolate (50-70% cocoa) 250g unsalted butter 4 eggs 375g sugar 150g flour (plain or gluten free)
Method: Melt the chocolate together with the butter in a plastic or glass bowl in the microwave. Heat for no more than one minute at a time on full power and stir each time to avoid scorching the chocolate. Whisk together the eggs and sugar, then stir into the melted chocolate and butter. Lastly, mix the flour thoroughly into the mix until completely combined. Pour into a lined tray or cake tin and bake at 160°c for about 20-25 minutes until cracks appear on the surface; you do not want it fully cooked or it won’t be as sticky. Cool and cut into portion sizes; this will store in a tub for at least two weeks or longer in the fridge. Enjoy this with some clotted cream or ice cream.

How will the stamp duty changes affect the market in 2015?
T
he overnight reform of the stamp duty system in early December took everyone by surprise but, now that the dust has settled, we can start to assess what the potential impact of the changes will be on the housing market. The old system massively distorted the market, particularly around the thresholds, because stamp duty was levied on the entire purchase price of the property. Consequently, it was pointless valuing a property at £128k or £260k; the sale price would simply be negotiated down to the nearest threshold. Also, because a mortgage can’t cover the cost of stamp duty, it unfairly penalised first time buyers, particularly in expensive areas like London.
Under the new system, the stamp duty on a £128k purchase price will be a mere £60, a saving of £1220, and on a £260k purchase it will be £3000, a saving of £4800. Therefore, I think there will be fairly strong price increases for houses in the £125-175k bracket and in the £250-300k bracket. At the other end of the scale, there will probably be hefty falls in the more desirable areas of London and the Home Counties. More significantly (and perhaps more importantly) the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors is predicting an increase in the number of house sales of between 2 and 5% across the country in 2015, although they expect that figure to be closer to 1% in London. This is good news,
sales volumes have been dwindling worryingly since the new rules on mortgage lending were introduced last year. Better still, the bulk of that increase is expected to be delivered by first time buyers, a breed that has been absent from the market for too long. House prices have been moderating for a few months now and in London some pundits estimate that the average house price has fallen by £30k. London house price inflation has been worrying Mark Carney whereas elsewhere the market has been disappointingly flat. Positive predictions across the board then.

Trend Tracker: Spring 2015
A
t first it seems implausible that the decade that fashion forgot could be making a comeback. OR, on closer inspection, could it be that seventies incarnate may not be such a bad thing after all? My Sindy always looked great, particularly when wearing her A line, yellow gingham skirt. Then, there was Jaclyn Smith, AKA Kelly Garrett from Charlie's Angels, always cool and suitably jump-suited up. Taking of jumpsuits, they remain popular into spring, as seen on the catwalks at Chloe showcased in casual denim. I sported one recently at a friend’s party and it allowed me to pull all kinds of dance moves until I became seriously incapacitated due to some super strength cocktails. Perhaps the seventies are permeating more than our wardrobes, I have a new and funky antique cabinet that I plan to use it as a cocktail cabinet, complete with a fairy lit interior and stuffed with Snowballs and Cherry Bs. I’ll also be wearing this season's floating numbers, such as the Joni Mitchell
22 inandaround
style seen at Pucci and Gucci. I am sure the trickle down to the high street will be fast and ferociously keenly priced. A grown up version of the summer dress all girls had circa 1978 appeared at Chloe in a pretty canary yellow - lovely and nostalgic. Flip to the future and a pared back, uber simple look sashayed down the spring runways, cleverly crafted kaftan shapes, graceful tunics and full skirts, all in swathes of natural whites and the palest of neutrals. The theme for simplicity continues, but in a harder more rough edged form as utilitarianesq makes a comeback. I remember borrowing my friend’s coolest khaki canvas oversized jacket when we were just seventeen. Maybe now I will be able to pick one up for me! Looking forward to everything that fashion has to offer this year, remember that gingham skirt belonging to my Sindy? Well they're back too, available in all sizes of the best square check out there.

Loose Neighbourhood Plan - Update
W
ith its historic buildings, valley conservation area and distinctive landscape, Loose is a special place. Loose Parish Council (LPC) is determined to keep it special for future generations to enjoy. A year ago it set up a steering group of Parish Councillors and residents to prepare a Neighbourhood Plan for the Parish. Neighbourhood Plans (NP) have legal force – unlike previous Parish plans which were only advisory. For example, planning applications will have to comply with the policies in the Loose NP unless there are overwhelming reasons for not doing so. The NP will give local people more influence over development and help to protect the aspects of the local environment that are most important to them. The steering group has made good progress, including: • Securing the maximum national grant as well as funding from the Loose Amenities Association, Maidstone Borough Council , Kent County Council and LPC • Carrying out an initial survey of the views of Loose residents • Preparing and delivering publicity materials to every Loose household, encouraging participation • Appointing an experienced consultant (Feria Urbanism) to help with the technical aspects of the process Feria led two public consultation events: a “visioning evening” in September (attended by over 100 people) and a three day “Design Forum” in October (attended by up to 60 people). Feria’s subsequent report sets out the key

outcomes from the Forum, identifies three possible policy themes (Access and Movement, Landscape Protection, and Design Quality) and suggests future actions. You can read the report and watch the presentations at the website www.feria-urbanism.eu/loose-downloads. The steering group will shortly appoint a consultant to provide technical support for the rest of the process. This will involve: • Developing the key themes into an outline plan • Public consultations before preparing the first full draft of the Plan • A statutory 6 week consultation, followed by preparing a further draft Plan and supporting documents • Another 6 week formal consultation, followed by an independent examination of the Plan • A referendum of all local electors Look out for further In and Around updates, which will give you details of progress and how and when you can comment on proposals. The more Loose Parish residents who do so the stronger the final Plan – which must represent their views - will be. In the meantime, if you would like to contribute any views, or join our invaluable team of voluntary helpers, please contact Jan Capon, Clerk to the Parish Council at loosepc@btconnect.com (tel 01622 692712) Jim Andrew Chair, Loose Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group

Hard times ahead for the estate executor – the problems with Probate can be a long and tedious process and estate executors must make sure that they follow the official procedure. Before the estate can be valued all assets will need to be identified including bank accounts, vehicles, pensions, life insurance policies and any other belongings of value. Any property owned by the deceased will need to be valued by an estate agent or valuer and all financial assets, such as savings and investments, will need to be given a valuation on the date of death.
Dealing with the loss of a loved one can be difficult enough, and can be exceptionally challenging for estate executors who find themselves coping with bereavement whilst also making arrangements for the deceased’s estate. Probate is not simply a case of reading through the Will and handing assets out to their rightful beneficiaries. For estates worth more than £5,000, unless all assets were held in joint names and are passing to the surviving spouse or civil partner, estate executors will need a grant of representation before banks and financial institutions will allow them to access the deceased’s assets. It
Mortgages, credit cards, loans and personal debts, and funeral expenses will also need to be accounted for as these will all need to be settled out of the deceased’s estate before any assets can be passed to the beneficiaries.
Completed forms will need to go to the Probate Registry and HMRC, the estate executor will then have to pay any Inheritance Tax and also swear an oath before they are issued with a grant of representation and the assets can be released. Being an estate executor is no simple task. Getting access to the assets can be time consuming, especially if the deceased did not keep sufficient records. But this is only the first hurdle and estate executors must go on to divide the assets amongst beneficiaries. Another lengthy task that can be further complicated by complex family situations and potential Will disputes. For advice on the Probate process, estate administration and Inheritance Tax, Alexander Astley can be reached at a.astley@gullands.com or 01622 689700 or visit www.gullands.com
Once the total worth of the estate has been calculated, Inheritance Tax forms will need to be completed. These will need to be done even if the estate value falls under the £650,000 threshold and there is no tax owed. For estates where the value is less than twice the Inheritance Tax threshold and where 100 per cent of unused Inheritance Tax from a late spouse or civil partner can be transferred to the deceased, only a Return of Estate Information form will need to be completed. inandaround

Old is the new ridiculously expensive
M
any people are addicted to something and I am one of them. Not for me the lure of crack cocaine, prescription meds or hard liquor though; instead, my life is taken over by rubbish TV programmes. My latest obsession is classic car restoration programmes of which there are a plethora to choose from. Channel 4 offered us For the Love of Cars with loveable rogue, Philip Glenister. They picked out 6 iconic British classics, made them good as new and then auctioned them off. Then there’s Car S.O.S. also from Channel 4. This is loosely based on the format of DIY SOS but, unfortunately, doing up some old bloke’s aging Daimler is never going to tug the heartstrings in the same way that handing over a shiny new house to a family that has been living in abject squalor is going to. Channel 5 offers us Classic Car Rescue. The chief appeal of this programme is watching head mechanic, Bernie, turn an ever more vivid shade of purple and running a sweepstake on when he’s going to keel over from a massive heart attack. But my very favourite show can be found on the obscure digital outpost of Quest TV; it is called Wheeler Dealers and features a likeable wide boy car dealer and his mechanic sidekick. They specialise in finding what they call “contemporary classics,” tarting them up a bit and then selling them on at a profit. Along the way there’s lots of cheeky offers, top tips on how to fix an oil leak on a 50 year old gear box and step by step guides to things like respraying a Bentley, all good stuff for geeks like me. What really astonishes me is how little profit they actually make on their cars, even though they don’t factor in the cost of the mechanic’s labour or the time taken by the wheeler dealer to go and find the cars. If these costs were accounted for, they would make a loss on practically every restoration project. There are two problems. Since everyone knows that classic cars are all the rage at the moment, anyone with a knackered old MG that has been rotting away in the garage for 20 years expects to be paid thousands of pounds for it. Also, the breakers yards that supply the parts are charging top dollar because demand is so strong.
32 inandaround
It’s the same thing with antiques and collectibles. At any junk yard or stately home with an outbuilding full of mouldering furniture, the owner knows full well the prices that popular pieces are fetching in the salesrooms and, when a dealer comes calling, there will be precious little negotiating on price. The problem even extends to houses. If you try to buy a “doer upper” these days, don’t be surprised when the combination of the sale price and the renovation costs actually exceeds the market value of the finished property. This, in a nutshell, is what is wrong with the country today. The classic car restorers, antiques dealers and property developers (in effect the entrepreneurs who invest their money, time and hard graft) struggle to make a living. At the same time, the people who actually own stuff – an old wreck that they bought 20 years ago and never got around to restoring or a rundown house they inherited from their parents – make huge profits. It’s hard to say what’s to blame; is it an unintended consequence of quantitative easing, the internet making it possible to easily compare the price of absolutely anything, or simply good old fashioned greed? Who am I to say? Anyway, if you want to get rich, my advice is to buy a house in London – preferably 30 years ago! But if you just have a love of old cars and enjoy tinkering and fettling and mending, why not buy a battered old classic that was once a real head turner. Even if you don’t finish it, it could be worth a fortune in 20 years’ time.

FAIR TRADE FORTNIGHT 23 FEBRUARY - 8 MARCH
T
he basic principles of fair trade were always to change the way trade worked for the poor, so that small scale producers could find a market for their food and crafts, feed their communities and trade their way out of poverty. With Fair Trade Fortnight rapidly approaching we need to consider making the right fair trade choice. Fair trade in supermarkets is a billion pound business with a wide range of brands and goods to choose from. So why choose brands like Traidcraft and Divine, which are available on at Ethos rather than supermarket own brand fair trade or big brand fair trade? For companies like Traidcraft and Divine, it is about justice, fairness and dignity which are fundamental to the way they work. Their bottom line is not about commodities, it’s about communities. Traidcraft works with smaller, more remote, more marginalised and poorer producers and that is why buying from Traidcraft is different from buying from supermarkets. Fair trade is not just part of Traidcraft’s business it is ALL of Traidcraft’s business. You can buy into this vision of Fair trade by shopping at your local Traidcraft stockist and Fair trade specialist: Ethos, 15 Starnes Court, off Union Street, Maidstone ME14 1EB
