Questions about your home media?

Pop in and ask the experts... X30 Silver

Byron Simon John

Ben

Mar tyn

am e Media’ te m o ‘H e h t t Mee Richard from Bearsted asked us how can he convert CDs, vinyl and cassettes to digital and play the files through his hi-fi. So we contacted Simon at Home Media (the local expert!) to ask for his help . . .

Q

“I am looking into the options of how to get all my CDs, vinyl and cassettes onto digital storage so I am able to play them using my existing hi-fi. I understand the transfer of vinyl and cassettes to digital can be handled by a turntable/cassette player connected to my PC using Audacity software. After that, there appears to be two options: either an all-in-one box like the Nova Fidelity X30 or separate units for storage and playback control. Please can you explain these options as it is rather confusing to us “mature folks”! Richard - Bearsted resident

A

Simon says . . .“There are so many ways to set up a digital music system that it’s no surprise that a lot of people find it confusing. The “right” system for you depends on how much music you have, how good

6

you want it to sound, your budget and your technical skills. Most music lovers have an MP3 player, the simplest solution is to plug that into your hi-fi via a Y cable that has a headphone-style 3.5mm jack plug at one end and two RCA plugs at the other end. The same cable can be connected to a PC and to a hi-fi.” The Nova Fidelity is a standalone music system that includes an amplifier, a CD player, a hard drive and internet radio capability, so all you need to do is plug in a pair of stereo speakers. The CD player is included so that ripping CDs is automated (you just have to load them), and it has Aux In sockets so you can plug in a turntable to rip your vinyl. You can even record internet radio broadcasts to the internal hard disk drive. Finally, there is a USB port so that you can plug in a FAT32-formatted external hard drive (not NTFS) to back up your music. You can use the EHD or a USB stick to copy files between your PC and the Nova Fidelity. If you would like to talk to someone directly about all the options, pop in to Home Media’s showroom on Union Street for an informal, no obligation chat. Simon is a local Maidstone resident, very friendly and helpful and we promise there are no pushy salesmen here.

Property

The Conservatory

Reinvented For thirty years the conservatory has been the must-have accessory for the suburban home with a garden. They are cheap to build, generally don’t require planning permission, add useful extra space and are a sure fire way of getting one up on the neighbours. They remain very popular today but have always been subject to one major shortcoming – with all that glass they are too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer. But now the conservatory is being reinvented to make it an attractive and practical extra room all year round. An increasingly popular home improvement is to replace the glass roof of an existing conservatory with a solid roof. There are a number of systems on the market that use a metal frame together with lightweight tiles, insulation and ceiling lining to create a well-insulated roof that ties in with the main roof on the rest of the house. Roof lights can be added to increase natural light in the room behind the conservatory and the new roof transforms the space into a light and airy, yet warm and comfortable year round room. There are plenty of registered installers around and the cost is a fraction of building a new conservatory or extension. Alternatively, if you are considering adding a conservatory to your home, you could have it built with a solid roof, making it a garden room. Another option that is growing in popularity is to build an orangery. Invented by the Victorians, who liked to grow orange trees in them, these have conventional brick or blockwork walls but more windows than a normal room and they tend to have patio doors. What makes them different is the ceiling which is

e nt v n i e r t o n y h W ? y r o t a v r e s n y o u r co made of glass panels, much like a conservatory in fact. The result is a light, stylish but eminently practical room that doubles as a greenhouse. Once again, there are prefabricated roof systems available and the total cost is not much more than a conventional single storey extension. Why not reinvent your conservatory?

5 tips

Advice

for anyone considering separating from their partner The end of a relationship is never easy, but it is important that people are aware of the procedure. If you are considering ending your relationship, whether it be amicable or not, here are five key points worth knowing. 1) What are the first steps I should take when separation becomes inevitable? There is no need to rush into a decision that will affect not only you but the rest of your family (particularly where children are involved). However, it is worthwhile getting legal advice, even if you have not yet made that final decision to part. Many couples are able to resolve their financial issues without a solicitor, but obtaining advice early on means that you are able to make good decisions about how to proceed. Many solicitors, including Gullands, offer initial appointments for a fixed fee, which do not obligate you to proceed any further with that solicitor, but allow you to get some idea of what the next steps are. 2) How do I choose the right solicitor? Separating can be extremely difficult, particularly if children are involved, so it is imperative that you choose a specialist solicitor who is best suited to your individual situation. For instance, if children are involved then you should choose a specialist family practitioner, accustomed to family courts. If your case includes other issues such as a business or trust, it is best to ensure that your solicitor has expertise in these areas. Whilst a solicitor’s experience is important, it is also important to use one that you are comfortable with. 3) What rights do I have? If you are married, generally the starting point is that the assets will be divided equally between the parties but there are many other factors to be taken into account, most particularly the needs of the parties and any dependent children. If you are unmarried, the protection is not so great, and the parties may only be able to resolve their respective interests in joint property. An initial appointment with a solicitor will help clarify this for you.

4) How can I protect my interests prior to separation? Try to get together as much financial information as you can. There are strict boundaries that prevent people from using any illegitimately gained paperwork as evidence in divorce cases, so your partner’s texts and emails will not provide sufficient paperwork. Instead, be aware of what your spouse’s assets might be, what your own assets are, and what you share, find out what the house is worth and what you owe on the mortgage. Don’t panic about what you don’t know as many people have no idea what their partners earn. Just be vigilant for example money being moved from joint accounts should ring alarm bells! If you are married, the process calls for full financial disclosure so you would expect to receive this information as matters progress. If you can bear it, stay in jointly owned property if you can, this can help alleviate the financial burden on separation but if you are not safe, or it is too distressing, consider moving out or asking your partner to leave. Simply leaving joint property does not mean that you lose your entitlement to it but staying might mean you can sort things out faster.

5) What mistakes should I avoid during a divorce? A common error many couples make is focusing on who caused the relationship to end. This should be avoided, it might be necessary for one party to be considered to be the one to blame as part of divorce proceedings but the focus should be on how to move forward, and not on the past. Where there are children, they should be the priority. It is accepted that both parents should have contact with their children, and keeping the children’s best interests at the heart of all decisions should help the parties make better decisions, and stay as amicable as possible in all aspects of the end of the relationship.

Fashion Trends for

Spring 2016

Spring 2016 will not be for shrinking violets. Embrace the warmer season with the new and exciting trends arriving on the high street right now. Ruffles are big this spring; used sparsely but to great effect, they can add instant oomph to any outfit. They are seen in the many Victorian inspired garments, along with puffy sleeves, bows, high necks and broderie anglaise. Ruffles are also seen coming together with flamenco skirts and the colour red in the Spanish influenced outfits that are going to be adding Latin spirit to the warmer days. Bare shoulders abounded on the catwalks - shoulder cut-outs, off the shoulder styles or asymmetric styles, there’s something to suit every taste with this flattering trend. 12

Like them or loathe them. Pleats are here to stay for a while longer, although this season much tinier than those seen in 2015 – the micro pleat is big news and can provide a surprisingly flattering silhouette. Trailing tassels add impact; provided by a knot or bow or just there for decoration, they may be wide or thin, fabric or string. Swingy fringing remains fashionable and as in recent seasons, 70’s inspired suede is still hot. Crumpled fabrics For relaxed, don’t care attitude and to save precious time in the mornings, choose this season’s crumpled fabrics – pre-creased and rumpled is bang on trend! Daytime pyjama options also abound – perfect for those fashionistas who always put comfort first.

Beauty & Fashion

The classic Oxford shirt undergoes a major deconstruction with endless variations on sale, many of which have become dresses rather than shirts and most will no longer be work appropriate – but they are great fun! Other trends to look out for include delicate lingerie-inspired dresses, some of which really will look like you are wearing lingerie as outerwear. Lightweight denim shirts, skirts and dresses keep you cool as the temperature rises. Large plaids will be everywhere and orange in every hue is set to be huge. Net is big, seen laid over other fabrics or alone and transparent for the bravest among us. And my least favourite trend, the paper bag waist is filtering onto the high street – be warned, it’s less than flattering for many of us! There is also a hint of the 90’s this spring – think minimal and grunge with a modern twist. Marled knits are also very this-season; in mostly neutral colours, they are a great cover up on cooler evenings. Accessorise with a very cool half-moon bag and a flat, comfortable (hooray) pair of mules and you’ll be nailing it this spring. Enjoy!

Faversham Hat Festival 26 March 2016 On Easter Saturday, 26th March 2016, the third Faversham Hat Festival takes place. The highlight is the Hat Parade. Starting at The Hat Shop in West Street it winds its way through the town centre at 11 o’clock. It will be led by Jack Spratt, the Town Crier, and accompanied by a group of wandering minstrels followed by hundreds of adults, children and pets in a wonderful array of hats. The festival was started in 2014 by Rachel Thapa-Chhetri, who had just embarked on a new business venture opening ‘The Hat Shop’ in West Street, Faversham. The wonderful thing about the festival is that everyone can join in, including dogs for which there is a special prize! The only criteria is that you wear a hat! The festival encourages people to be wild and outrageous, utilise their creative flair and create something a little different but it is ok to wear your old favourite if you wish. The most important part of the festival is the coming together of the community in a shared way. There are a number of best hat competitions that can be entered into for the more

ambitious and competitive participants. The competition categories will be judged at the Alexander Centre – the destination of the parade. Non hat wearers are welcome to watch the spectacle and are encouraged to line the streets and cheer for their favourite hats.. In addition there will be a Hatter’s Fair in the Alexander Centre local craft and wares on sale. The finale to the festival in the evening is the ever popular Hatter’s Dance at The Assembly Rooms in Preston Street. Due to the huge success of last year’s dance The K D Jazz and Dance Band have been invited back to play again this year. Idea

nt u h g g e r Easte

Whatever the weather, children of all ages will love an Easter egg hunt. Try one of these ideas and have a cracking good time! For a simple hunt,

put plastic eggs around the house or garden that children have to collect to win a prize, or hide small chocolate eggs for them to collect in a basket.

Add clues to make the search a bit harder. Alternatively, create a treasure map and mark each egg with an X. Young children

will enjoy following a trail of paper bunny footprints, or a long piece of string to reach their prize.

Add a fun educational twist using numbered cardboard egg shapes – children can collect odd or even numbers, or get the highest total to win a prize. You could also put the letters of an Easter-themed word on the shapes and challenge them to solve the anagram.

Set up an ‘obstacle’ hunt.

To win each egg, children have to complete a challenge, such as doing ten star jumps, singing a nursery rhyme, or completing a craft activity.

If you have a mixed

group of children, prepare individual checklists so they each find only what is on their list and no more – for example, two chocolate bunnies, three silver eggs and four fluffy chicks.

Food and Drink

Hot smoked salmon kedgeree with soft poached eggs Serves 4

You will need: 300g basmati rice 1 tbsp vegetable oil 1 large onion, finely chopped 12 green cardamom pods, split open 1/4 tsp turmeric 1 cinnamon stick 3 bay leaves 600ml fresh chicken stock 300g hot-smoked salmon, skinned and flaked 3 tbsp chopped fresh parsley 1 tsp white wine vinegar 4 fresh medium eggs

How to do it: 1. Cover the rice with water and leave to soak for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, heat the vegetable oil in a large saucepan. Add the onion and cook gently for 5 minutes until soft. Add the cardamom, turmeric, cinnamon and bay leaves and cook for a further minute.

2.Drain the rice, add to the pan and stir well. Add the stock and a little seasoning, bring to the boil and stir once to release any rice from the bottom of the pan. Cover with a lid and cook gently for 30 minutes. 3.Uncover the rice and remove the bay leaves, cinnamon and cardamom pods. Gently fork in the hot-smoked salmon, cover again and return to a low heat for 5 minutes or until the fish is heated through. Gently stir in the parsley and season to taste. Keep warm by covering with foil. 4.Meanwhile, bring a medium-size pan of water to the boil, then lower the heat so that just a few bubbles are rising. Add the vinegar. Break 1 egg into a teacup. Swirl the water with a spoon to make a whirlpool and slide the egg into the centre to poach gently for 2½ minutes. Lift onto kitchen paper to drain, then keep warm on a plate while you cook the remaining eggs. 5. Divide the kedgeree between warmed plates, top with a poached egg and serve immediately.

Events Follow in the footsteps of

Chaucer’s pilgrims

With Easter just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to follow in the footsteps of Geoffrey Chaucer’s famous pilgrims. Spring was definitely in the air when the colourful medieval band embarked on their journey from London’s Tabard Inn to Canterbury Cathedral in Chaucer’s much-loved literary gem, The Canterbury Tales. Five of his best-loved stories of love, romance and trickery are vividly brought to life with all the fun of his original tales at The Canterbury Tales visitor attraction, which offers a stunningly accurate reconstruction of 14th-century England inside the former St Margaret’s Church – the oldest surviving building in St Margaret’s Street. The Canterbury Tales provides a great introduction to the cathedral city and its famous literary connection as well as being a hugely entertaining day out for the whole family. Having welcomed more than two million visitors from all over the world, including families, groups and school children, the award-winning attraction has proved to be a firm favourite and remains one of the ‘must do, must see’ attractions in Kent. So come and step back in time and experience the sights, smells and sounds of medieval London. With a combination of live interaction from our costumed characters and the aid of an audio guide, this memorable pilgrimage will appeal to visitors of all ages.

To find out more, including details of special events throughout the year, visit www.canterburytales.org.uk The Canterbury Tales is a Continuum Heritage Attraction. Continuum Attractions offers a host of cultural visitor attraction experiences across the UK, from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales to Edinburgh’s underground history told under the Royal Mile. Normal admission prices: £9.75 adults, £7.50 children (aged 5-15), and £8.50 students and concessions. Open all year, please check website for opening times.

Health news The

Zika Virus

The Zika virus was first identified in monkeys in Uganda in 1947 and the first human case was detected in Nigeria in 1954. There have since been small, short-lived outbreaks in people on the continent, parts of Asia and in the Pacific Islands but it has recently spread on a massive scale in the Americas, where transmission was first detected in Brazil in May 2015. Anyone who is living in or travelling to an area where Zika virus is found who has not already been infected with the virus is at risk of infection, including pregnant women. Zika is primarily transmitted through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes; a large number of the mosquitoes which carry the virus and a lack of any natural immunity is thought to be helping the infection to spread rapidly. It can also be transmitted from a pregnant mother to her baby during pregnancy or around the time of birth, although it is not known exactly how this occurs. About 20% of people infected with Zika virus become ill, usually with mild symptoms including fever, rash, joint pain, conjunctivitis, muscle pain and headache. The symptoms typically begin between two and seven days after being bitten by an infected mosquito and last for a few days. No treatment or vaccine is available, although rest, paracetamol and drinking plenty of fluids may ease symptoms.

Zika has been linked to a serious foetal deformation known as microcephaly, in which babies are born with smaller than normal brains. There have been over 3,800 reported cases of microcephaly in Brazil alone since October. Pregnant women in any trimester should consider postponing travel to areas where the virus transmission is ongoing. If they do go, they should take steps to avoid mosquito bites such as using an EPA-registered insect repellent which is effective and safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Some countries have advised women not to get pregnant. It is hoped that with a major international effort there could possibly be a vaccine within the next couple of years.

Gardening

Wriggle Wriggle

Hooray for the humble garden worm! A new dance craze perhaps? Well maybe if you’re a worm that is! In my opinion, worms have to be the unsung heroes of the garden. They only eat what I don’t want, they tidy up leaves from the borders by dragging them down into the soil, and who else improves our soil structure by adding air holes, incorporating organic matter en route and even provides food for the birds (sorry worms!), all for free? As far as I’m aware, garden worms don’t have their own ‘worm awareness week’, they just carry on doing what they do best, quietly making beautifully rich, dark brown garden goodness. You may be happy to leave the worms well alone, merrily munching away in the compost heap, but why not have a go at making your own worm villa (known as a wormery), or buying a pre- made version online? Most kids love worms so it’s a great activity to do as a family, or indeed if you enjoy the idea of reducing landfill and nourishing your garden at the same time. Worms will happily nosh through your kitchen waste. They’re not that fussy but they don’t like acidic things such as citrus peels, garlic and onion, but things they do love (strangely) are teabags, eggshell and cold mashed potato, (I’ve heard that for worms these foods are like us eating oysters…they erm… put them in the mood for a little wriggle wriggle). That said, worms never over populate and are able to regulate their breeding

actively in line with their environment. Bizarrely they can also change gender to suit the local talent on offer! They don’t like extremes in temperature, so I’d advise keeping them in a shaded corner which does not get too hot or cold. Their home can be insulated in winter, or moved into the garage. The resulting compost is rich and when scattered into the borders makes a highly concentrated soil improver, as does the liquid ‘wee tea’ which can be accessed via the tap at the base of the wormery. Diluted at 1:10 with water it makes a great natural liquid plant food too. Until next time, happy gardening.

Other jobs to do this month include: • Protecting early spring growth from pesky slugs (try a midnight slug hunt!) • Hoe off any newly germinating weed seedlings on a dry day • Cut back shrubs such as Cornus (dogwood) and Buddleia • Herbaceous perennials such as Hostas which are just beginning to re-grow can be dug up and chopped into 2 or 4 pieces and replanted to make more. • Begin feeding fish • Don’t forget to provide food for the worms – add a 5cm layer of compost to the top of the soil and let the worms pull it in.

Advice

Do I have

bed bugs get rid and if so,

how do I

of them?

Bed Bugs are small they have six legs and look like a lentil. Their eggs are almost impossible to spot they are less than a millimetre long, in their nymph stages they are 1-4mm long and adult bed bugs are only 5-6mm. In six months, if left untreated, a pair can produce 8000 adults, 100,000 nymphs and 70,000 eggs. They feed on us, drinking our blood, attracted to us by the carbon dioxide we exhale and the heat from our bodies as we lie in bed sleeping. They are a night time pest, hiding up in harbourages during the daytime and becoming active at night. They are a resilient pest, number one public enemy in the USA and fast becoming our number one pest in the UK, they can live for about ten months. Their favourite hiding places are on or inside our beds, mattresses, bed-frames, headboards, bedside cupboards, carpets, skirting, sockets, picture frames, cracked plaster, flaking wall paper and other bedroom furniture. Generally they will stick close to your bed and close to their food source, you and I! A bright torch is essential for locating them. Inspect the bed frame and headboard first or the mattress folds, along the seams and under the buttons, look for small lentil shaped insects, or the blood spots that are often the first sign that they are present, when you inspect and launder your bed linen. To eradicate first try utilising preventative measures, high levels of sanitation, (thorough cleaning and vacuuming) and chemicals (as the final solution). Wash all affected items where it is practical to do so at 50 degrees centigrade for an hour. Both high temperatures and freezing will kill bed bugs at all stages in their life cycle. Steaming the bed bug harbourages (hiding places) is also a successful way of killing them. Steam treatments are often applied alongside other chemical

treatments in a combined approach. Professional chemical treatments using residual insecticides are the best modern approach for tackling bed bugs and the approach Pest Purge favours. The only way to tell if a bed bug treatment has been successful is to sleep in the room and see if you are still being bitten. Pheromone bed bug monitors can be deployed which will act to attract any remaining bed bugs onto the monitor where they will get stuck and die. These should be placed on the floor, under the bed, against the skirting board below the head of the bed. Also, avoid buying second hand furniture always buy new if you are furnishing your room, it is very common for bed bugs to be in rented property where the tenants change on a frequent basis or where rooms are let fully furnished. In all cases if you suspect bed bugs, treat professionally and early, it only takes a few months for a heavy infestation to build up. Once the numbers start increasing exponentially, it will soon get out of control. For professional bed bug services, including free surveys for suspected infestations, contact Richard Lee at Pest Purge 01622 842481 0r 07758 615101. Remember, night night, sleep tight and don’t let the bed bugs bite. Sweet dreams‌

Loose…a place apart One of the many topics that Loose Parish Council is proposing that their Neighbourhood Plan will cover is the protection of the far reaching views that the landscape of Loose has to offer. In all eight views have been identified; the prime one being the view south from the footpath through the allotments looking towards Linton and the Greensand Ridge. The proposal is that any development on the rim of the view should be resisted. The protection of views has been a constant theme amongst the feed-back we have had from the public engagement events. Details of all eight views are shown on the LPC website but they will also be included in the next draft of the Neighbourhood Plan which will again be put out for public comment. If you require further details please contact the Parish Clerk, Jan Capon on 01622692712 (Mon to Wed) or email on office@loose-pc.gov.uk.

Have fun, get fit

& keep warm!

There is a new way of keeping fit that’s fun, sociable, and warm!

best reason to try touchtennis is simply that it’s fun!

Touchtennis is a new and easy sport that was only founded in 2002. Its popularity has soared as it is a game suitable for all ages and abilities. Played on a smaller court than normal tennis, with foam balls and lighter racquets it’s perfect for beginners or those who’ve played a bit of tennis years ago – it’s about outwitting your opponents rather than relying on strength and power blasts.

If you would like to try something new why not pop along to the Maidstone YMCA or Ditton Community Centre?

Toddlers starting with Mini Tennis (the children’s version of touchtennis) often find they move up naturally to lawn tennis and older people are delighted to find they can start rallying fairly quickly. We all know that regular exercise benefits wellbeing and reduces the impact of ageing but perhaps the

Retirement in 2016 Retirement can be many things including a time of great questioning... At some time in our life, we all ask the question, ‘has my life made a difference?’ Statistically, many of us have longer in retirement now than ever before, approximately 30 years for some. That’s a long time - to do what? It’s certainly a long time to keep one’s self ‘busy’. Of course ‘busy’ can feel wonderful but it can also mean we are actively distracting ourselves, so we never quite listen to our ‘inner voice’ and never give ourselves the time to uncover what our unique contribution could be - that which would bring us the joy we may be longing for. If you know you have a lot to offer, but seek greater clarity as to what ‘bigger picture’ you would like to contribute towards, consider the following questions: In your work life and social life, think of three separate occasions when you felt really well? If you wanted everyone to understand one thing - what would it be? And what would you like to be remembered for (beyond being a good wife/husband, neighbour etc)? Look for the common threads in your answers – this can reveal a direction that is meaningful to you....

Film review

The Hateful Eight Quentin Tarantino’s eighth film is set in a snowy Wyoming in 1875. We encounter bounty hunter John Ruth (Kurt Russell) taking his prisoner Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh) to hang. Enroute to the town of Red Rock, Ruth runs into renowned bounty hunter Marquis Warren (Samuel L Jackson) and sheriff Chris Mannix (Walter Goggins). Jackson is no stranger to the bloody violence that comes with any Tarantino movie, having starred in Pulp Fiction and played the deeply unlikeable head servant in Django Unchained. When the blizzard forces the foursome to stop, they take shelter in ‘Minnie’s Haberdashery’ where they make the acquaintance of the rest of the cast, including Tarantino favourites Tim Roth and Michael Madsen as hangman Oswaldo Mobray and Joe Gage respectively. Waiting for the weather to clear, the group are confined to each other’s company, but right from the off you can’t escape a sense of unease and the feeling that not everyone will survive the

night. We are led to believe that none of the group know each other, but is that truly the case? As the film progresses, we get the sense that no one can be trusted or is as they seem. Tarantino burst onto the scene in the 1990s with iconic hits Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, which firmly established him as one of the greatest film directors of all time. His ability to write engrossing dialogue and create labyrinthine plot twists is fundamentally complemented by his trademark bloody violence. At just under three hours long the Hateful Eight might seem a bit of a mouthful but when you’re in the auditorium the time just flies by. It is unmissable; Tarantino has done it again.
