am e Media’ te m o ‘H e h t t Mee Richard from Bearsted asked us how can he convert CDs, vinyl and cassettes to digital and play the files through his hi-fi. So we contacted Simon at Home Media (the local expert!) to ask for his help . . .

Q

“I am looking into the options of how to get all my CDs, vinyl and cassettes onto digital storage so I am able to play them using my existing hi-fi. I understand the transfer of vinyl and cassettes to digital can be handled by a turntable/cassette player connected to my PC using Audacity software. After that, there appears to be two options: either an all-in-one box like the Nova Fidelity X30 or separate units for storage and playback control. Please can you explain these options as it is rather confusing to us “mature folks”! Richard - Bearsted resident

A

Simon says . . .“There are so many ways to set up a digital music system that it’s no surprise that a lot of people find it confusing. The “right” system for you depends on how much music you have, how good

you want it to sound, your budget and your technical skills. Most music lovers have an MP3 player, the simplest solution is to plug that into your hi-fi via a Y cable that has a headphone-style 3.5mm jack plug at one end and two RCA plugs at the other end. The same cable can be connected to a PC and to a hi-fi.” The Nova Fidelity is a standalone music system that includes an amplifier, a CD player, a hard drive and internet radio capability, so all you need to do is plug in a pair of stereo speakers. The CD player is included so that ripping CDs is automated (you just have to load them), and it has Aux In sockets so you can plug in a turntable to rip your vinyl. You can even record internet radio broadcasts to the internal hard disk drive. Finally, there is a USB port so that you can plug in a FAT32-formatted external hard drive (not NTFS) to back up your music. You can use the EHD or a USB stick to copy files between your PC and the Nova Fidelity. If you would like to talk to someone directly about all the options, pop in to Home Media’s showroom on Union Street for an informal, no obligation chat. Simon is a local Maidstone resident, very friendly and helpful and we promise there are no pushy salesmen here.

Kitchens . . . the most important room?

W

hy do we all love to be in the kitchen? We decorate our lounges with comfortable seating and cosy rugs but when family and friends come to visit we are all happy to spend time catching up in the kitchen!

Property ownership is something many Brits aspire to as having your own home comes with many freedoms that are not available to people who are renting.

However, those who get on to the property ladder have the freedom to do whatever they want to their property, as long as of course it is within planning regulations. Householders can undertake a wide range of projects, ranging from playing around with colour schemes to redesigning their interiors. One of the rooms homeowners like to redesign nowadays is the kitchen, which is increasingly playing a central role in 21st-century lifestyles and is forecasted to be even more vital. In fact, by 2040 your kitchen will be your personal trainer, dietician, psychologist and lifestyle coach, according to an independent Future Kitchen report by The Future Laboratory.

Thinking of a new bedroom? Then think of us.

Property

Lots more modern homes have a kitchen-diner which creates a more sociable environment. Our future kitchen will respond to people’s energy levels, nutritional requirements and mood. Despite a high use of technology, it will also be sustainable and eco-friendly. Meanwhile, over half of Brits (57 per cent) think that technology will boost our kitchen experience, with nearly half (44 per cent) being of the opinion that the most important feature in our future kitchen will be energy saving. There is already a technology-leaning trend in the country as more than two-thirds of UK consumers (67 per cent) try to buy energy-efficient appliances, which suggests that “green awareness” is on the rise.

Lots more modern homes have a kitchen-diner which creates a more sociable environment. As a result to this trend, more and more people are now spending thousands of pounds on kitchen revamps or installations. If you can’t afford a brand new kitchen it is an option to replace doors and worktops to suit your budget.

The kitchen is the room to have fun, entertain and cook. This growing trend is a result of cookery shows on television.

Local Firm Launches

Virtual Design Service

The region’s leading independent kitchen, bathroom and bedroom firm has invested in cutting edge technology to bring 4D virtual design to life for home owners in the Maidstone area. MBK Design Studio has invested in the latest design software which enables clients to experience their kitchen, bathroom and bedroom before making any purchase. “You would never buy a house based on a look through the windows, so why buy a kitchen, bathroom or bedroom without visiting the room” explained Stewart Woodruff, owner of MBK. “We feel very strongly that our clients deserve the very best technology available when making such a big personal decision and the ability for them to enter their virtual room and experience how they

react to their surroundings is extremely important for them in reaching what is often an emotional decision”. “We have trialed this software on a number of customers and they were so impressed with its results that we recommend anyone who is struggling with visualising their project to visit us and have their project designed and experience 4D design.” 4D Virtual reality in design has its roots in the gaming industry with the advancement of reality games and the ability for the player to interact with their virtual surroundings. This technology has lead to a great advancement in Computer Aided design in the Kitchen and Bathroom business providing customers with an experience they will not forget. Probate

Advice

where to start

Dealing with the loss of a loved one can be difficult enough, and this can be exceptionally challenging for estate executors who find themselves coping with bereavement whilst also making arrangements for the deceased’s estate. Probate is not simply a case of reading through the Will and handing assets out to their rightful beneficiaries. For estates worth more than £5,000, unless all assets were held in joint names and are passing to the surviving spouse or civil partner, estate executors will need a grant of representation before banks and financial institutions will allow them to access the deceased’s assets. It can be a long and tedious process and estate executors must make sure that they follow the official procedure. Before the estate can be valued all assets will need to be identified including bank accounts, vehicles, pensions, life insurance policies and any other belongings of value. Any property owned by the deceased will need to be valued by an Estate Agent or valuer and all financial assets, such as savings and investments, will need to be given a valuation on the date of death. Mortgages, credit cards, loans and personal debts, and funeral expenses will also need to be accounted for as these will all need to be settled out of the deceased’s estate before any assets can be passed to the beneficiaries. Once the total worth of the estate has been calculated, Inheritance Tax forms will

need to be completed. These will need to be done even if the estate value falls under the £650,000 threshold and there is no tax owed. For estates where the value is less than twice the Inheritance Tax threshold and where 100 per cent of unused Inheritance Tax from a late spouse or civil partner can be transferred to the deceased, only a Return of Estate Information form will need to be completed. Completed forms will need to go to the Probate Registry and HMRC, the estate executor will then have to pay any Inheritance Tax and also swear an oath before they are issued with a grant of representation and the assets can be released. Being an estate executor is no simple task. Getting access to the assets can be time consuming, especially if the deceased did not keep sufficient records. But this is only the first hurdle and estate executors must go on to divide the assets amongst beneficiaries. Another lengthy task that can be further complicated by complex family situations and potential Will disputes.

For advice on the Probate process, estate administration and Inheritance Tax, Alexander Astley can be reached at a.astley@gullands.com or 01622 689700 or visit www.gullands.com 13

Explore the islands of the

Bahamas The main 16 Islands Of The Bahamas are a lot easier to reach than you think, from direct flights out of London Heathrow to the capital Nassau with British Airways, (and a new aircraft from 1st July) to many flight options via the US and Cuba. Short inter-island flights and ferry services make it easy to explore one or two extra islands during your visit.

Nassau, the capital, is the most historical and populated hub of the islands, with a broad range of accommodation from villas and apartments, guest houses and small chic hotels, a sprinkling of all-inclusive and the mega-resort of Atlantis Paradise Island with its own Aquaventure waterpark. Explore the piratical history of the islands at the Pirates of Nassau Museum, and really get into the spirit of things with the rum and beer tours sampling the new brews. A food and history tour gives a taste of the past lives of Nassau as well as the current culinary delights available. The local Grouper fish features large on the menu, as does the

sea mollusc, Conch, pronounced ‘konk’, served in endless combinations from roasted, broiled, salad, chowder and fritters. Guava duff – a bit like jam roly-poly, served with custard is a popular. The endless pink, gold and white sand beaches make it easy to while away the hours and beach barbeques are often all-afternoon affairs, freshly cooked food just steps from the waters’ edge. Night spots, from casual bars and beachside haunts to sophisticated clubs and entertainment in the major hotels, end days spent in paradise. It seems no holiday is complete without a little retail therapy, locally crafted straw goods and wood carvings feature at the ‘Straw Market’ on every island – whether just one or two roadside stalls, a small shop or the full covered market building on Bay Street in Nassau. Designer shops and jewellers, with duty free bargains are also a hit with visitors. The Bahamas, surrounded by some of the clearest ocean in the world, is a playground for watersports. Sailing and fishing, and world-class snorkelling and diving experiences are available throughout the islands, and along the coast of Eleuthera surf the waves coming in from the Atlantic. More unusual water-based experiences, such as the Blue Holes on Andros and Long island, to close encounters with dolphins and sea lions are available.

Currently the Swimming Pigs of The Bahamas down in The Exumas are one of the most popular attractions. Thrumming boat engines have the pigs trotting out of the bush and paddling to the boats to scavenge for bread and vegetables handed out by tourists. County town flies the flag for

St George

MAIDSTONE is set to become emblazoned with red and white bunting as it flies the flag for St George on April 23. Patriotic performances will be taking place throughout the town centre, commemorating the patron saint’s day, with St George and the Dragon playing a prime part in proceedings. Yarn bombers are already busy knitting their feisty fiery dragons to install in Jubilee Square as fiddlers resin their bows and tune up their tambours. Baton-twirling morrismen, clog dancers, traditional music and innovative folk rock will be among performers in town during an afternoon of activity, celebrating everything that is British. The programme gets underway at noon with the popular Maidstone band, Fate the Juggler in Jubilee Square, followed by the Sally Ironmonger Trio, who also have a big local following. Back by popular demand from last year are the Black Lion Courtiers, a five-piece Indie folk band from Rochester, who perform from 2.20pm, followed by another Medway folk band, Larkspur at 3.30pm. The oldest building in Maidstone, the Royal Albion in Havock Lane (off St Faiths Street), will have The Legendary Skynflynt Big Band playing at 2pm on an outdoor stage. They are also putting together a special pie and mash menu to complement their offers on real ale. Re-enactment battles are also on the cards. For younger children, there will be magic shows at 2.15pm and 3.15pm at D’Lishious in Market 16

Buildings and Maidstone Museum is running a children’s craft workshop where they can make their very own dragon to take home. Face painting will be free for under 12’s in Jubilee Square and Fremlin Walk. Street theatre is being provided by Theatretrain and the Hazlitt Youth Theatre and the eccentric Honk Project’s dancing day trippers – mad moped enthusiasts with music! - will be moseying around Fremlin Walk during the afternoon. Morris groups taking part include Kettle Bridge Clogs, Kits Coty Morris and Vixen Morris, all of whom will be performing in Jubilee Square, Earl Street and Fremlin Walk throughout the day. If all this activity makes you hungry and thirsty, the Living Cafe, Museum Cafe and Art Lounge in Market Buildings will have offers on Cream Teas – plus red, white and blue cupcakes, their St. Georges Day Specials! Saint George’s Day is the feast day of Saint George and the national day for England. Although it is not an official national holiday, it is celebrated by various Christian churches and is the traditionally accepted date of Saint George’s death in 303 AD. One Maidstone events organiser Zoe Sparkle said: “Last year’s event was a great success and this year’s celebration is shaping up to be even better. What a great excuse to fly the flag for England and celebrate its finest traditions!”

John Dory Gratin John Dory is also known as Saint Peter’s fish because the large spot behind the gills on each side of the body is said to be the thumbprint of the disciple. This makes it a very popular meal choice for Fridays with their religious association. John Dory is a solitary fish that lives on diet of small shellfish and, in turn, has a sweet, delicately flavoured and firm flesh. It is best suited to panfrying, grilling or baking. Turbot, Hake and Brill are good substitutes for this fish. Serves 4 Ingredients • 4 x 200g John Dory fillets • 3 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for brushing • 50g fine breadcrumbs • 2 tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley • Large pinch of dried oregano • 1 garlic clove, chopped • 400ml dry white wine • Salt and pepper

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 180˚C/Gas Mark 4. Brush a flameproof baking dish with oil. 2. Sprinkle 3 tablespoons of the breadcrumbs over the bottom of the prepared dish and put two fish fillets on top. 3. Sprinkle with half of the parsley, oregano, chopped garlic and 3 tablespoons of the remaining breadcrumbs and season with salt and pepper. 4. Add the remaining fish fillets and sprinkle with the remaining parsley, oregano, garlic and another 3 tablespoons of breadcrumbs. 5. Drizzle with the wine, set the dish over a medium heat and cook until the wine has completely evaporated. 6. Transfer the dish to the oven and bake for 8 minutes, basting occasionally. 7. Remove the dish from the oven, sprinkle with the remaining breadcrumbs, drizzle with the olive oil and then return to the oven. 8. Bake for another 7-12 minutes, until the fish flakes easily and the topping is golden brown. Serve immediately.

Keloid Scars In normal wound healing, collagen gathers around the damage and helps the wound seal over; the scar gradually fades and becomes smoother. A keloid scar is one where there is overgrowth of dense fibrous tissue. The scar grows lumpy and invades the surrounding healthy tissue beyond the initial wound. This usually develops after the injury has healed. It does not normally regress spontaneously and it will usually recur if it is excised. It is shiny, hairless, rubbery and hard and raised above the surrounding skin. A keloid scar is not the same as a hypertrophic scar which is red and raised but within the area of the original wound. Hypertrophic scars usually appear within a month of the injury, grow for several months and then regress, whereas keloid scars may appear later and continue growing for longer. Around 10-15% of wounds become keloid with a much higher incidence in people with darker skins. The peak age is 20 to 30 years and 50% of the time there is a family history of keloid scarring. Keloid scars can occur anywhere on the body but are most common on the shoulders, sternum, neck, cheek and earlobes. They can occur even after a very minor injury – burns, acne scars and infected wounds are especially susceptible and people who have had one before are at much higher risk. They may not form until months or years after the injury and can last for years. They may be red or purple to begin but usually fade with age; they may also be tender or itchy. Those affected should avoid deliberate cuts or breaks in the skin such as tattoos and piercings.

Treatment is difficult and may not be successful. Steroid injections, steroid-impregnated tape or silicone gel sheeting may be used to attempt to flatten the scar. Early keloids may be frozen with liquid nitrogen to stop them growing and laser treatment may reduce redness. Surgery can be used to remove the scar but the keloid can grow back and may be larger than before. Your GP can offer advice.

Gardening

Can you

dig it?

Soil, mud, dirt or muck, call it what you will, but is yours any good and can you dig it? One of the most common ‘moans’ I get from gardeners is that “my soil is rubbish”. We’ll presume they mean it’s not great quality (and not that it’s full of litter), but I’m never quite sure what people expect from their soil. Probably a soft, stone free, sifted loam or maybe a dark, rich organic compost such as that found in a grow bag. The reality is that soil, like man, is never perfect. Sometimes too wet, too squidgy, too crumbly, or too firm, and, just like humans, the perfect soil takes hard work to maintain. Now I realise that some people were just born perfect, just as some loamy soils are too. But if you’re not one of the lucky ones, and your soil is more arm pit than Brad Pitt, here’s what to do about it. Like all things in life, there are extremes. I (being a horticultural extremist) had to go the whole hog and excavate the clay from my borders, replacing it with 40cm of topsoil, but unless you’re starting a garden from scratch, and have access to a digger, I’d recommend working with what you already have. I’ve only ever come across one soil type which I didn’t think possible to improve due to 28

its shallow nature, so we just added soil on top to make it deeper. Whether you have easy-to-dig sandy soil or moisture retentive clay, the addition of a few ingredients will help create a beautiful growing medium. If you are a novice gardener it’s simple, just add well-rotted (not smelly) manure, weed-free and lots of it. For those with clay soil, and more stamina, add horticultural grit to the soil and dig in well, then dig in manure and top off with a 5cm layer of manure to act as mulch. And for those who really can’t be bothered with digging, just add a layer of manure to the soil surface after feeding with a pelleted fertilizer. It’s not ideal, but the worms will drag it down into the soil, and it’s much better than nothing at all. You’ll also have more success in the future if you choose the right types of plants for your soil pH. Testing kits are available online and in garden centres. If you want to grow acid loving plants in a strongly alkaline soil, you can try the addition of sulphur chips, coffee grinds, pine based composts, or planting in tubs of ericaceous compost, but failing that, my advice is to move house!

Happy Gardening...

Spring is here and its time to get out in the garden and get busy!

Here I am to help you to know what to do this month! • Your soft fruit trees should be pruned back ready for the new shoots ready for the spring and summer and now it is a good time to give this a feed around the roots or even dig in a good bit of well rotted farm manure.

CARPENTER / BUILDER -

• My roses are showing new signs of life so its time to help these with a spring feed too.

Established 30 years

• Now the grass if you haven’t managed to give it its first cut, well now is the time to do it! Just watch you don’t run over the spring bulbs in flower, and lift the height of the deck as your last cut might have been lower and your lawn may of got a bit straggly over winter. • Hows your pots looking on the patio? have you thought about re-potting into bigger pots with fresh new compost.

Its all prep work this month!

Beauty & Fashion The rise of multiple

ear piercings

For spring/summer 2016 designers revisit the 90s; punk influences and streetwear style return with jewellery to match - including multiple piercings, especially in the ears. A trend for the young and cool you might think, but women in their thirties, forties and beyond are also going crazy for multiple piercings in their ears, even the more conservative professionals who have never before adorned each ear with more than a single earring. Mid-life crisis? Perhaps! But it’s an easy one to carry off! Earrings are currently the fastest growing category of jewellery. Unlike the 90s when they tended to be large, grungy and industrial looking, with the new trend comes an array of beautiful, delicate and dainty ear jewellery – fine and elegant. Every part of the ear can be decorated and the designs are often comfortable enough to be worn continuously. The overall effect is individual, rebellious but still feminine! Mix and match for multiple piercings – the general trend is asymmetric, for example three in one ear and five in the other, so you can customise your look to be completely unique. Choose your piercing salon carefully; a reputable place should ask you to sign a consent form, ensure that young teenagers have parental consent and photo ID for over 16s. They should advise on aftercare such as a sea salt water wash two or three times daily. So, is it a case of no pain no gain? Most ear piercings are not too painful; cartilage piercings may sometimes hurt a little more than a lobe. A piercing gun may be used for ear lobe piercings but a sterilised hollow needle is generally preferred for cartilage piercings. Bear in mind that most piercings should be left for 3 to 9 months before they are taken out, so choose your

jewellery carefully and ensure it is appropriate for effective healing. Tempted? Then you just need to decide which parts of the ear or ears you would like to have pierced! The helix is the top part of the cartilage, the tragus is the bit in the middle where the ear joins the face and the daith is the cartilage just above your earhole. (The daith piercing is currently being billed as a treatment for migraines as it is close to the acupuncture point for migraine headaches, though there is no evidence for this and trials have yet to be carried out – despite this, the daith piercing is more popular than ever before). There is also the conch, the rook, forward helix, anti-tragus, inner conch, industrial, snug and transverse lobe… the list goes on. Just remember, every ear is unique when adorned with jewellery! Be brave, stay safe and have fun with your new piercings! 31

Community Call for School Governors in the Maidstone area School governors are the largest and most vital volunteer force in education. However, there is currently a large number of primary and nursery schools in and around Maidstone looking for skilled and dedicated governors to join them. In order to help fill the high number of governor vacancies across Kent and to form effective and committed governing bodies, SGOSS – Governors for Schools is working in partnership with Kent County Council to appeal for new volunteers to come forward. Governing boards play a crucial part in raising school standards in three key capacities; setting strategic direction, monitoring school performance and ensuring the school’s budget is well spent. Anyone 18 or over and living in the UK can be a governor; it is by no means a role for just parents. Meetings are usually held in the evenings and you should be expect to commit on average 15 hours

per term to the role. Free training and support is provided and you do not need to have any experience of education, just drive, enthusiasm and the desire to use your skills in a positive and constructive way. Mrs P Woods, Headteacher at Brookfield Infant School in Aylesford said: “Having an effective, supportive governing board working alongside the head teacher and senior leadership team make a fantastic difference to the school. My governing board care passionately about the teachers and pupils in our school, visit regularly and monitor the effectiveness of the School Improvement Plan”. You can find out more about the responsibilities of a school governor and apply for a role by visiting www.becomeagovernor.com. SGOSS’s dedicated area managers are available to answer your questions and will have the latest vacancy information for schools in your local area. To get in touch, email gemma.bryer-ash@ sgoss.org.uk or contact Gemma on 020 7288 9536.

Film Review Alvin and the Chipmunks:

The Road Chip

Are you looking for something to entertain the kids? With R.L Stine’s scary adventure film ‘Goosebumps’ starring Jack Black attracting a more teenage audience, the new Alvin and the Chipmunks could be the one for the kids instead. We are reunited with our three furry friends in the fourth instalment of this successful franchise. It’s been four years since we last saw the trio in ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked’ and this one delivers the familiar blend of remixed songs and action-packed chaos you’ve come to expect from the boys.

Walt Becker takes up the directing mantel from Mike Mitchell and this is his first experience in the animation arena. It’s not a bad effort for Becker’s first outing in this territory and is sure to engross kids worldwide. I was in a cinema screening packed with children from across the primary school spectrum and the laughter was almost deafening as the cheesy jokes and squeaky song renditions rained down on us. Chart hits, ‘Uptown Funk’ and ‘Turn down for what’ are amongst the tunes belted out by the gang.

This time round, the three chipmunks are travelling cross-country from Los Angeles to Miami in order for music producer Dave (Jason Lee) to launch a new album for popstar Ashley (Bella Thorne). But the chipmunks’ dad, Dave, is set to propose to his girlfriend Samantha (Kimberley Williams-Paisley) and give the trio a new brother, Miles. Alvin (voiced by Justin Long), Simon (Matthew Gray Gubler) and Theodore (Jesse McCartney) are determined to stop this from happening after Miles convinces them that Dave will ditch them once he gets married.

Make sure you keep an eye out for when the chipmunks and Miles board a plane and the subsequent mayhem that follows. Let’s just say, it involves zoo animals and the wrath of an Air Marshall. It’s bound to tickle you. The film moves along at a swift pace and the ninety minutes don’t drag. As much as I dislike animations (and singing animals for that matter) it isn’t bad at all.

Information

Making an informed choice This month I want to look at the arguments for remaining in the EU and at least make up my own mind on which way I will vote.

Undoubtedly the best thing about the EU is the reason why we joined it in the first place, the single market. This allows free movement of goods, services and capital (trade and investment) between member states. The golden rule about trade is that if you make it easy by removing barriers, you get more of it. Just under half our total trade is with the EU and if we leave the EU, we lose our access to the single market. Of course, we’d still trade with Europe but that trade would be significantly reduced. It’s hard to put a figure on it but I’m pretty certain that it would be enough to tip us back into recession for quite some time. The Euro sceptics counter this with two arguments. Firstly, we could simply set up new trade agreements with the EU. Sadly, it isn’t that simple. One of the biggest problems with the EU is that all 28 member states have to agree before anything can change, so setting up trade agreements would involve endless negotiations that took years and we might actually end up with a worse deal than before. The other argument is that we run a persistent trade deficit with the EU, we import more than we export, so all this trade may not necessarily be a good thing. That may be true but trade is trade, it still creates jobs, growth and wealth. Besides which, the single market in services is not yet complete and that is a shame because we’re great at things like financial services, accountancy and business consultancy. Give it a few years and it will be sorted and then the picture will look far rosier. I haven’t even mentioned foreign investment into the UK. If we leave the EU, it will be grim; let’s not even go there. Instead, let’s talk about laws. The

European Commission, the legislative arm of the EU, doesn’t just make stupid and annoying laws; it actually makes some pretty good ones too, particularly around employment and equality. Surely the acid test of a law is whether it is good or bad for the people it effects, not which legislative body drafted it. Finally, we need to consider the benefits of free movement and an open Europe. I did a road trip which took in 4 European countries in five days in 2014 and the only time I had customs officers poking around in my luggage was when I went over the border into Switzerland, which isn’t in the EU. Twenty-seven years ago, going from one side of the Berlin Wall to the other was one the scariest things imaginable. Surely that progress is worth hanging on to. So, should we stay or should we go? If we leave the EU we could potentially reduce net immigration by a third, but so what? Net migration was a record 330,000 last year but unemployment is at a ten-year low. If you don’t like the fact that there’s a Polish section in your local supermarket, what does that say about you? If we leave the EU, our economy will pay a heavy price and we will begin the long slow slide into global irrelevance. More importantly, rather than strolling across the piazza with our fellow Europeans, we will be foreigners in a strange land. I started this article as a Eurosceptic but the imminent prospect of a referendum forced me to examine the facts. I’m voting to stay.
