Home Improvements
The comparison site Go Compare has just published a survey of the most popular home improvements. It makes interesting reading, particularly given that the number of properties going on the market is in a serious slump right now. It seems that homeowners are currently subscribing to the old adage, don’t move, improve. Top of the list is fitting a new bathroom (44%) with installing a new kitchen close behind on 39%. A surprising 33% of home improvers have gone for a new boiler while 28% opted for a garden makeover. What is interesting about all this is that when it comes to cost effective ways of adding value to your home, only one of these things would make the top 5. The best way to add value is a loft conversion but only 10% of improvers went down this path. Building an extension, particularly to the side of the house, is very effective but only 16% of respondents had opted to do this. A new kitchen will certainly add value but usually the cost of 6
installing it will be greater than the increase in value so it is anything but cost effective. However, fitting a new bathroom is relatively cheap to do (providing you don’t get carried away) and is the third best way of adding value. What all this shows, to me anyway, is that homeowners are thinking of their own comfort and needs when they make improvements to their properties. Energy saving measures such as a new boiler or fitting solar panels came high on the list of most popular improvements, but neither of these things does much to add value to a home or make it more saleable. New kitchens and garden makeovers do much to make a property nice to live in but, once again, do little to add value. It seems that, given the lack of choice in properties to buy, many homeowners are sitting tight. The doldrums that are afflicting many estate agents show no signs of lifting any time soon.

Garden
Visiting!
We are a curious lot us English - always eager to have a quick shufty around our neighbour’s houses and gardens to see exactly what ‘lies beneath’ and it appears to be something in our genes. Personally, I don’t visit many gardens (unless I’m working of course!) and I certainly wouldn’t just pitch up expecting someone to welcome me into his house and garden with open arms – but I do help out my father-in-law when he generously opens his lovely garden for charitable events. These are always well attended and organised affairs, and almost always on Sunday afternoon so as not to clash with church or, heaven forbid, recovering from the night before!
10
Normally I act as (unpaid!) tour guide and plant identifier and am always astounded by the reaction that people have when seeing the plot for the first time… blown away by the design which compartmentalises the acre of land into separate ‘rooms,’ each with its own theme or special planting schemes.
Even though it is attached to a historic property, they still do not expect to see such a magnificent display of plants, water features, sculptures and garden buildings right in the centre of the town! The photo shows visitors enjoying the garden (even on a rainsodden day in June) and highlights the potential pitfalls – the little girl in pink somehow managed to dunk herself in the pond shortly after I took the picture. Luckily no children or fish were harmed on this occasion (!) but it highlights the responsibilities of the property owner when the garden is full of adults, children of varying sizes, pets and wheelchair users. What visitors don’t see is the huge amount of blood, sweat, tears and cash that are swallowed up by gardens that need to be on the top of their game when inviting the general public to come and enjoy them. This is particularly true for all those house owners who sign up to the National Gardens Scheme in the hope of reaching the horticultural holy grail of entry into the Yellow Book. Like the Mafia, it is extremely well organised, with networks of good people right across the country

I’m not sure whether domestic garden visiting is a purely English phenomenon – I assume it probably is as we have such a wide variety of garden styles on offer. No German towns (or any other EU country just in case I’m accused of bias!) could compete with our oriental, naturalistic, traditional, contemporary or just plain idiosyncratic gardens – all nurtured and loved to within an inch of their lives. This, together with their doting owners, puts the English garden on a level that other nations can only envy – and as for our cream teas, well it’s worth slipping a Kagool on just for that!

Packing for your jollies...
Don’t forget your hat! I have a few minor OCDs when it comes to holiday prep and packing. The first, and most consistent, concerns undergarments, which I must buy new EVERY time I travel, a habit that has become quite expensive. Placing brand spanking new underwear at the top of my list, here are some other ideas on how to carefully curate your holiday accessory pack.
14
Clutch bag You only need one, not dozens! Do make it a signature piece, one you adore and preferably with a certain neutrality to it. My go-to clutch is a deep grey, suede, box style bag suitably enlivened by a geologically blingy front. It goes with EVERYTHING! Scarves I always go on holiday with my best friend and both our families and she is always on the cadge for a scarf. Around the pool it is a really easy accessory to pop on to protect your scalp or pretty up sea sprayed hair. Also, take a hat; with temperatures rising, we need to protect our heads!
Shoes Two pairs – really, just two. After flip flops, which should be uber comfy and a suit all shade, the other pair can just be a nude wedge or perhaps a more strappy flat sandal, something that shows the toes, (which of course must be prepared before any excursion). Make-up must haves Sun kissed skin can be enhanced with just a few products. Take a great all in one cleanser. Eve Lom is pricey but does everything you need it to. I am loving my Elemis moisturiser at the moment, (the one that features seaweed from Malta). A light base, such as Mac face and body, is a dewy and a barely there cover. Clarins do a great feature bronzer for the summer, I just grabbed their XXX last weekend and the lovely circle of 4 shades really brightens up the face. One bright lippy choose a daring coral or pink - and a simple clear gloss mascara (waterproof), eyebrow pencil and liquid liner and you’re all done!
FRENCH TUITION Female tutor based in Loose offers tuition to beginners through to examination level. Extra help given to GCSE, AS and A level students.

Advice
Dementia Buddy Scheme celebrates its first birthday Sarah Pointer, Ward Manager on Jonathan Saunders Ward has found the scheme to be really helpful to patients. She said: “The buddies are a fantastic group of people - they are really patient centred and have engaged in all manner of activities, from cups of tea and chatter, to board games and puzzles. They are a very valuable asset to the ward.”
The Alzheimer’s & Dementia Support Services Buddy Scheme has been supporting patients with dementia in Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells Hospitals for nearly a year now and the scheme is going from strength to strength. With an initial six volunteers, there are now 22 Dementia Buddies working across both sites with another 30 coming on board in the near future. Volunteers are recruited who possess core skills in communication and compassion, and receive training in understanding dementia. Dementia Buddies work to: • ensure patients with dementia receive increased social interaction • assist patients in maintaining cognitive capability • encourage and assist with food and drink • provided families and Carers with support, including signposting to support services and information The two main aims of the scheme are to make the hospital experience a better one for patients with dementia and to free up valuable nursing time for the staff to concentrate on the clinical needs of patients. 16
If you would like more information about the Buddy Scheme please contact Lesley Knight at Alzheimer’s & Dementia Support Services 01474 533990 - lesleyknight@alz-dem.org or, at the hospital, Natalie Emerick on 07961 501291 natalie.emerick@nhs.net If you would like to volunteer as a Dementia Buddy, or for any other volunteer opportunity at either Maidstone or Tunbridge Wells Hospitals, please contact Natalie Emerick on 07961 501291
Here’s what some of our dementia buddies have to say about their vital role in helping patients with dementia:
“I chose to become a De mentia Bu ddy as I wa nted to volu nteer in the com mu nity. When I saw this position advertised I thou ght it was a brillia nt sche me to be involved with, a nd it’s a very ra re opportu nity to be a ble to help patients directly a nd work on the wa rds”. “ I feel this scheme is important because most people know how it feels to leave a loved one in hospital, and to know someone is there to chat to them and spend some time with them is reassuring when the family can’t be there. It also helps lift some of the burden off the staff on the wards, who do an amazing job, and genuinely care about the patients and about making their time
Advice
in hospital as comfortable and as pleasant as it can. As busy as their day can be, they sometimes don’t have the opportunity to sit with each patient for long periods or quality time and so will ask us to spend some time with the patients who haven’t had visitors, and to take them out for a change of scenery when they are restless”. “ I really enjoy interacting with the
patients and being of service to them, whether it’s just making them a cup of tea, helping them with their lunch or having a little walk around and a chat. I love the sense of satisfaction I get on my way home after a shift when the patient was deeply grateful, or had parted some words of wisdom as I left. I’ve learnt so much from this scheme, not only from the training but from the patients themselves, and I’m really happy to be a part of it”.” - Marwa Benr
“What I enjoy about the Buddy Scheme is talking to patients with reference to
events and people long ago. I find it extremely interesting.” - Charlotte Hardy
“When you sit with a patient they are so happy that someone is taking the time to chat with them even if, at first, they are unhappy or poorly, they are still touched that someone would spend time asking how they are feeling. Often patients will tell you they are frightened and they don’t understand why they are in hospital and what is happening to them, but if you make them a cup of tea and let them talk, even if at times it doesn’t make sense, it really helps and they seem much calmer”. “I chose to be a volunteer to learn about dementia in a hospital environment, how the NHS is dealing with this and what resources are available, it is a challenging role but extremely rewarding, it provides such a great support to the team on the ward and is a vital support for vulnerable patients suffering with dementia.” – Jenny Wombwell 17
Heart of Kent Hospice’s Sunflower Appeal Heart of Kent Hospice has been overwhelmed by the response to its new summer Sunflower Appeal, which has already raised over £11,000 since its launch in early May. The Sunflower Appeal provides an opportunity for people within the local community to remember and celebrate the life of a loved one, while supporting the Hospice. The Sunflower is the colourful symbol for the Hospice’s latest Appeal and supporters are invited to dedicate a Sunflower marker with the name of their loved one which will be planted in the Hospice garden. They will be able to view their Sunflower at a special event organised on 20th June between 10am -2pm, where a short dedication with be held led by the Hospice Chaplain.

Travel
Majestic
Mallorca streets. The entire town comes out to celebrate its religious heritage and, very much, its future. The town acts as gateway to the northernmost part of Mallorca, the outstanding Formentor peninsula. You can drive the narrow roads, enjoy it on foot or, as we did, take a boat trip from Port de Pollença. The views were breathtaking and we stopped off at the little beach near the 5-star Barcelo Formentor Hotel, which once welcomed Grace Kelly and Winston Churchill as guests. The hotel’s Verandah bar, sheltered from the sun by the trees lining the beach, is a great place to relax with a gin and tonic. The beach itself is rocky: for the best swim in the area, try the beach at Cala San Vicenç, easily reached by bus from Pollença.
I instinctively knew that tarring all of Mallorca with the same brush of notoriety for the rowdy, alcohol-fuelled behaviour of a large number of its visitors was unfair, so I flew over to uncover the island’s delights away from the package holiday resorts. I wasn’t disappointed. The 340 bus from the capital, Palma, took us to Pollença, nestling in the foothills of the Tramuntana mountains. The town’s key landmark, the 365 Steps of Calvari, leads to an old convent at the top and the climb was well worth the effort for the views over the town and the terrain around. Afterwards, we cooled down with a delicious artisan ice cream from Gelats Valls in the Plaça Major.
20
Later that evening, we were lucky to witness the spectacle of the Corpus Christi festival. After mass in the church, a masked and dancing John the Baptist leads Pollença’s youth, dancing, playing music and carrying an icon representing the body of Jesus through the narrow
For dinner, our choices were two neighbouring eateries in a side street: tapas at Bar Alhambra (if they have the squid cooked in ink and wine, don’t miss it), or choose a home cooked hearty meal (the portions of suckling pig and monkfish were immense) at La Font del Gall. Both restaurants serve delicious wines from the local Mortitx vineyard, about which the townsfolk will wax lyrical at any opportunity. Instead of catching the bus back south, we took a cab to the working town of Sa Pobla. Untouched by tourism, it’s an opportunity to relax with a coffee in the lovely town square and watch the townsfolk go about their daily business, before taking the very scenic 45 minute train journey back to Palma. The city is truly the island’s beating heart with something for everyone. The perceived wisdom of the travel advisors is to visit Bellver Castle and the cathedral, but choose your time of day to do so. In the midday sun, you’d be better off wandering aimlessly around the shops and bars in the narrow and cooler streets of the old town, taking care not to miss the amazing Olivar fish
market (the frito mixto with a small beer at Bar de Peix inside makes for a great lunch). If art is your thing, the Esbaluard modern art museum is worth a look. For sun worshippers, at the end of the day head to the small city beach at Can Pere Antoni. It’s very convenient and popular with locals. For food, do join the locals at the excellent Quina Creu, offering small tapas known as pintxos for €1.50 each. At the other end of the scale, I have to recommend the Michelin starred Simply Fosh, where the seasonal tasting menu, including paired wines and cheeses, came to less than £100 per person. The food was outstanding, and I’m saving up for another visit when the menu changes in the autumn.

Jellyfish
Stings
Jellyfish are mushroom-shaped creatures with long thin tentacles on the underside of their body which are covered with small poisonous sacs. When touched by a swimmer, wader or diver in the seawater, the sacs release venom producing a nasty sting. Jellyfish often float near the surface of the sea and in recent years have become increasingly common in the seas around Europe in warmer months. The stings vary greatly in severity; most are fairly mild and just cause instant pain, an itchy rash and welts where the tentacles have made contact (usually red, brown or purplish tracks) and swelling, but there may also be vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, muscle spasms, numbness and tingling, a throbbing pain radiating up an arm or leg and swollen lymph nodes. Very rarely, a jellyfish sting may cause a serious reaction. Seek immediate medical attention if there is difficulty breathing, chest pain, if the sting has affected a large area of the body or the face or genitals, if pain is very severe or if the person is very young or elderly. Very rarely a jellyfish sting can cause coma or death. The person who has been stung should be treated out of the water. Movement increases the risk of toxins being released into the body so remain as still as possible and remove any remaining tentacles using tweezers ideally or a clean stick. A clean shell, razor blade or credit card can be used to remove any of the small poisonous sacs that remain on the skin. Apply an 24
ice pack to reduce swelling and inflammation. Applying shaving cream will help the spread of toxins; vinegar, alcohol, urine and baking soda are NOT recommended! Paracetamol or ibuprofen can help reduce pain and swelling.
It can be useful to scuff your feet as you walk in shallow sea water to warn any sea creatures that you’re approaching!
Stay safe this summer and have a great holiday! Phoebe Hodge

Advice
Holiday Contact As the summer holidays approach, I see an increase in enquiries about how to resolve issues over holiday contact arrangements for children. Last year, a significant change took place with regard to the way that disputes over children issues are resolved. Amendment to the law resulted in us now making Child Arrangements Orders, sweeping away the old regime of Residence and Contact Orders. Under the previous arrangement, the parent with main care could have obtained a Residence Order perhaps with defined Contact granted to the absent parent. Now we have an Order covering the living and contact arrangements. However, as before, the Courts do not want to make Orders concerning Children. They want parents to resolve issues themselves. As part of this there is now much greater emphasis on parents attending mediation before proceedings can even be issued. As solicitors we have an obligation to make sure all attempts have been made to resolve the issue before considering court involvement. That being the case, what can parents do themselves to avoid having to involve solicitors at all? The first thing is to try to ensure the lines of communication are open. It is not always easy to speak to an estranged partner, when a relationship breaks down. Feelings will run high but at the middle of this will be the children of the family and parents owe it to them to try to minimise the impact of the split. If the parties are finding it hard to communicate, try to find a neutral third party to pass messages, or limit contact to text or email and only about issues concerning the children. If necessary consult your solicitor before difficulties get out of hand. Avoid using the children to pass messages. When it comes to organising the summer and other school holidays, the more notice that can be given the better, although however well intentioned parents are, last minute changes may have to be
made which may result in arguments leaving both parents with childcare issues to sort out. What about taking the child out of the country? If there is a Residence Order or Child Arrangement Order establishing with whom the child will live, that parent does not need to seek the permission of the other parent to take the child out of the country for up to 28 days. However, for the vast majority of cases, where there is no order, consent must be obtained from everyone with parental responsibility. Parents should provide each other ahead of the holiday with details of flights and how the child can be contacted and where they will be staying. Information on travelling abroad with children is available on the government website www.gov.uk/permission-take-child-abroad. The party with whom the child lives should hold the passport, but should make it available in good time to the other parent, who should return it promptly after the holiday. If it is not possible to agree holiday contact, legal advice should be sought and mediation attempted. Taking the children out of the country for a longer period is a very different matter and advice should be sought early on if that is a possibility. As can be seen, whilst there are legal provisions governing the care of children after separation, the emphasis is on the parents acting in the best interests of their child and caring for the child without the involvement of the law. It is not easy, and there will inevitably be a few issues, but ultimately doing what is best for your child, and remembering that you are both responsible for the children’s welfare and happiness should help to avoid major difficulties arising. The Exasperating Excess
Waiver Scam
Summer is upon us once again so it is time for my annual rant about all things holiday related. Today I am going to talk about rental cars. On the face of it, hiring a car is a remarkably cheap thing to do. In fact, only yesterday I booked a Citroen DS3 (or similar), complete with the essential aircon, for 11 days for around £130; what a bargain! However, I know from hard won experience that it won’t be as simple as that and I will wind up paying considerably more than I bargained for. For starters, there is the great fuel scam. Traditionally, I used to land at Malaga airport and be handed the keys to a battered jalopy. It would be running on fumes and the holiday would always start with the gamble over whether there was enough fuel to get to the nearest petrol station. Then you had the entertaining game of trying to get back to the airport with no more than a few millilitres of petrol sloshing around the bottom of the tank. But recently I’ve found that you prepay for a tank of fuel when you pick the car up and the payment is non-refundable. Last time I was given a small Kia which, if my calculations are correct, had an 18 gallon fuel tank – at least, that’s how much diesel I paid for. Being a small diesel, it was staggeringly economical and the tank was two thirds full when I took it back; the great fuel scam had just cost me about 70 euros. However, this year I’ve noticed that the rental companies seem to have gone back to the old system - no petrol in the tank but no charge either. Much more annoying is the situation with insurance. Included in the rental price is fully comprehensive insurance. However, when you pick the car up the rep will demand an excess payment of around 800 euros which is either frozen on your credit card or taken out of your bank account if you pay by debit card. Provided you bring the car back in one piece, the money will be refunded when you return it. Even so, that is potentially 800 euros taken out of your spending money and if you do have a prang, you could be 800 euros the poorer – not a good situation to be in. To get round this,
you can take out excess waiver insurance but it is not cheap; for the car hire I have just booked it will cost about £98, not much less than the cost of hiring the car, but at least I won’t have to worry about losing €800. Happily (you might think), there is a cheaper alternative. For around £45 you can buy excess waiver insurance from a broker, which looked like such good value that I bought it. The next day I received an email explaining how it worked – “When you collect the car you will be asked to leave a deposit of 800€. When you return your car in the same condition it was collected in, the deposit amount will be refunded!!!” In other words, you’re in exactly the same boat as if you had decided not to take out excess waiver cover in the first place. Apparently, the idea is that if you do crash the car, you can reclaim the 800€ off the cheaper policy, but that’s cold comfort if you can’t afford a beer because the rental company is sitting on your spending money. Needless to say, I demanded my £45 back and resigned myself to shelling out a load more dosh when I picked the car up. Alternatively, there is another way. Hire a car from Avis, Hertz or one of the other long established firms. You will pay a fair bit more for the rental but there are no hidden charges so it’s not that much more expensive. You also get a shiny new car and rather more polished customer service. Have a nice day! Howard Clemmow
