Scuba Diver Tony Meets The Prince Of Wales & The Duke Of Cambridge
Cognitive Hypnotherapy for Confidence and Self-Esteem Issues
“I can only assume that his interest probably stems from the fact that I threw him into the swimming pool on many occasions and instead of putting him off, it actually enthused him. I am thrilled that he has decided to carry on the tradition started by my Father who I know began as your president right at the beginning of the BSAC. Then when he handed over to me, 40 years ago, little did I think that I would end up being your President for 40 out of your 60 years.” His Royal Highness expressed admiration for BSAC’s growing membership of 30,000 members and the organisation’s work on marine conservation such as BSAC’s underwater litterpick campaign. His Royal Highness added: “I do hope the club will go from strength to strength under its new and enthusiastic management.”
Tony Marshall (three from the left) in the front row standing beside BSAC Chief Executive Mary Tetley.
A SCUBA DIVER from Sevenoaks met The Prince of Wales and The Duke of Cambridge at a special event to mark the handover of the British Sub-Aqua Club (BSAC) Presidency. Tony Marshall, 73, of Halstead, who is BSAC’s Vice President, was at the London reception to welcome the royal guests where he helped The Duke kit up for his scuba dive and chatted to his Father about the 60-year history of the club. It was announced in May that The Duke has followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather to take the helm of BSAC, the UK’s governing body for scuba diving and snorkelling, which celebrated its diamond jubilee last year. On Wednesday July 9, Their Royal Highnesses joined around 100 BSAC members to mark the historic handover and to say thank you to The Prince of Wales for his four decades of loyal leadership at the head of the organisation. The Duke of Cambridge took the plunge himself at the event, held at the Oasis lido in London’s West End, where he buddied up with young scuba diver, 17-year-old Tom Billingham, to carry out essential safety checks before descending on a short pool dive to practice their skills. The Duke also joined in with a group of young snorkellers and together they practiced putting on masks, fins and snorkels before carrying out a series of snorkelling signals. The group of excited young BSAC members were then presented with certificates by The Prince of Wales to mark the special part they played on the day. Tony, a dad-of-three and grandfather-of-four, who has been scuba diving since 1958 and teaches others to learn the sport, helped The Duke get kitted up ready for his dive and later spoke to his father about BSAC’s diamond jubilee celebrations which took place last year.
The Duke of Cambridge, who was presented with a BSAC President diving jacket and a scuba diving T-shirt for his little son George, said at the event: “It is a great honour to be here with my father to accept the role as President of the British Sub-Aqua Club, continuing the Presidency from my father and from my grandfather, The Duke of Edinburgh. “Like them, I can proudly say I learnt to dive with the Club, and share your passion for the sport and the underwater environment. I hope that one day my son, George, might follow in our footsteps. At the moment bathtime is quite painful but I imagine as he gets a little bit older donning a snorkel and mask might calm him down. I look forward to working with BSAC to encourage even more young people to dive - to help develop the next generation of underwater explorers, pioneers and protectors.” While The Duke enjoyed his snorkelling and scuba diving, his father was taken on a short journey through a series of BSAC storyboards which detailed the success of BSAC’s recent underwater litterpick campaign, its diamond jubilee celebrations and the Beachcomber and rock pooling sessions designed for young children to learn about what they can find on a beach. “We look forward to working closely with The Duke to inspire a new generation of young scuba divers to discover the rich adventures and opportunities of the underwater world which we all have a shared interest in preserving and protecting.” The event was held at the Oasis lido by kind permission of Camden Council who own the venue which is managed on their behalf by GLL (Better), the UK’s largest charitable social enterprise leisure provider. For more information go to www.bsac.com.
Tony said: “I told The Prince of Wales that he had been an exemplary President of BSAC and we talked about him diving on the Mary Rose and how BSAC has recently sponsored the memorial bust of Alexander McKee who spent years searching the wreck. He was a charming man and interested in what one had to say.” Speaking at the special reception, where he was presented with a Lifetime Honorary Member Award by BSAC Chairman Eugene Farrell, The Prince of Wales, said: “I feel extraordinarily proud having lasted for 40 years as your President. I am delighted that my eldest son is taking over from me. 4

Maidstone Horticultural Society
Maidstone Horticultural Society offers members something to enjoy in all aspects of horticulture in a friendly social setting. We currently have around 150 members and there is something for everyone, be it the challenge of the three Shows or the seven interesting Talks and demonstrations by local wellknown experts or the three full day Coach Outings to places of gardening interest in SE England. We also have a Floral Art Group which is happy to welcome new members, hold a Garden Party each summer in a member’s garden and an Annual Dinner when we have a 3 course meal and all of our historic trophies are presented to the winning Show Exhibitors. There are records of many local garden and allotment societies around Maidstone from the 1870s, however, it was in 1935 that the Maidstone Horticultural Society was formed with Sir Garrard Tyyrwhitt-Drake (who was Mayor of Maidstone several times) as President, with many notable Vice-Presidents including Lady Bailey of Leeds Castle. Many valuable trophies were given that are still awarded at today’s shows. During the War the Society closed down and the Committee combined with others to form the Maidstone Wartime Horticultural Committee to encourage food production and finally re-started in 1945. In 1952 one of the committee members became Head Gardener at the Sandringham Estate. In its esteemed past MHS was one of Maidstone’s “institutions” in the “Garden of England” with many skilled gardeners competing in the Shows with their majestic blooms and magnificent vegetables. Much of the old tradition carries on but adapted to changing times, so despite the trend now to smaller gardens, more types of entertainment to compete for our leisure hours and the tendency of the weather to throw extreme conditions at us we still have members who enjoy growing flowers, vegetables and fruit specifically for the shows and others who are happy to enter anything from their garden which happens to be ready at the right time. We have increased interest in our Cookery and Handicraft classes and steady support for the Floral Art competitions. Anyone who is not a member can enter (details from the Show Secretary) even if they are only 3 years old! We have special classes for children with, for example, their decorated biscuit or garden in a seed tray or Sunflower bloom. 8

So, do come and support us (next opportunity is next Show) as we try to uphold the traditions of those gardeners of the past and enjoy ourselves socially while celebrating and learning about gardening. Our next Show is Saturday 6 September – in Baptist Church Halls, Knightrider Street 1.30 – 4pm Our next Coach Outing is Sunday 28 September – Waterperry Gardens near Oxford Our next Talks are held in the Baptist Church Hall, Knightrider Street 7.30pm Thursday 2 October - A History of Herbs by Sue Eldridge Thursday 6 November –Winter in the Garden by Steve Bradley (Radio Kent) For further details please contact: Secretary: Carole Dorey 01622 756023 Show Secretary: Christine Goodey 01622 674384

24 hr Live-in Care Christine says: “Personal Assistants are recruited locally from the South East of the UK and we do criminal record checks on all our new Personal Assistants and take professional references, so we know who we’re taking on. We provide them with thorough training in the work and we then visit them frequently during their assignments to make sure customers are happy and that the service is running smoothly.”
Bluebird Care’s offices in Bromley and Kent are challenging conventional thinking about later life care with their new 24/7 Livein Care service. The offices have firmly established themselves in the area by providing high quality private day care visits and becoming a preferred service for over a 1,000 local families throughout the area. Bluebird Care offers a comprehensive Live-in Care service, providing Personal Assistants to live round the clock in the homes of vulnerable customers permitting an extended period of living at home. Christine Robinson of Bluebird Care, who co-ordinates the service says: “Live in Care provides a bridge between the time when independent living can be achieved with assistance from visiting carers and the time when residential care is unavoidable.” It used to be the case that once day care became insufficient the only alternative was residential care. With all the bad publicity that everyone sees, this is sometimes not a popular choice for customers. The Bluebird Care Live-in Care service provides a really suitable alternative for many people who would previously have been reluctant residential home dwellers. 10 inandaround
The benefits of having a back-up facility with the wider Bluebird Care network (which has more than 170 offices UK wide) so that in the event that a Personal Assistant has to be withdrawn for any reason (say because of illness, or to deal with a crisis in their own families) there will be access to a reliable source of good substitutes at short notice, if necessary. “The round the clock service has proved to be popular with customers. We have had several customers of our day visit service who have trialled Live-in Care as an alternative to residential care and have made the trial permanent” said Christine. The costs are similar but the advantages of “staying home” and maintaining local social networks can make Live-in care an attractive option. The presence of the local Bluebird Care office is a key element to the appeal of the service. Our local offices provide the staff for the supervision process and also the back office resources necessary to comply with employment regulation. “The Taxman” makes it clear that round the clock Personal Assistants cannot be selfemployed. They are either the employee of an agency, or the employee of the person receiving the care. But vulnerable customers rarely want the hassle of being employers, and nor do they want to run the risks of personal accident claims or unpaid taxes - possible if things aren’t done properly. If Bluebird Care manage the service then nobody needs to lose sleep about all that! With places in top quality residential
care in short supply, many families are currently thinking hard about how their senior members can be helped to remain in their homes – which is what most of them want. It seems that Bluebird Care may have some of the answers! Christine Robinson can be reached at christinerobinson@bluebirdcare.co.uk or call your local office for more information call 01622 809528 or email maidstone@bluebirdcare.co.uk
‘From living in a Care Home back to living on her own Home!’ Joan has lived in her own home since she was 14. She has always been independent and likes her routine. A few years ago, Joan suffered some ill health and was admitted to hospital. When it came to discharge, Joan was told that she needed help and so she went into various Nursing Homes before she decided she wanted to move back home…. Joan says, “The people in these homes had dementia and so ‘I didn’t fit in’. I was having to wait for people to help me with my personal care. I had to eat the food they cooked and no one really had the time to keep me company. I really wanted to come home! I’m so used to my own home because I know where everything is and can easily get to what I need. I’ve always loved reading, writing and needle work but now my hands hurt”. “My Social Service Case Manager provided me with a list of companies for me to choose from if I wanted ‘Care at Home’. I interviewed with three different companies and settled with Bluebird Care as they were close to home and seemed to be the friendliest. I met with Graz in my own home and she was very pleasant and efficient and she put the service into place very quickly. I’ve had carers from different backgrounds and of different ages. “I don’t think caring for someone is easy. I don’t think I’d stay with an old woman! (Laughs). We’ve adjusted very quickly to each other and now I know them, I like having the carers in my own home”. “My carers know my routine and I find it beneficial having live-in carers. You have the upper hand in your own home and I’m still independent. I now get 1-2-1 care and everyone looks after my needs. At this stage in my life that’s very important to me.”

Changes to Child Maintenance rather than use the CMS if this is possible. For those that opt to use the CMS there will be an initial ÂŁ20 application fee, which was implemented on the 30th June 2014.
The Child Support Agency, (CSA), is closing down and will be replaced with the Child Maintenance Service, (CMS). The CMS will use information directly from HMRC to assess the income of the paying parent. Once the rate has been calculated the CMS will then check their records every year with the HMRC to ensure that their assessment is still correct. Over the course of the next few years all cases currently with the CSA will be closed. This will mean that parents who currently use the CSA will be given 6 months notice that their cases will close and they will have the option then to apply to the CMS should they still require assistance setting up and/or collecting maintenance. All new applications will be processed by the CMS and all parents will initially be told to contact Child Maintenance Options to get the process started in the way that best fits their circumstances. Parents currently using the CSA and/or new parents looking to make an application will be encouraged to start up family-based arrangements
16 inandaround
As from the 11th August 2014, in addition to the initial application fee, the CMS will also charge both the paying parent and the receiving parent if they are unable to enter into a family-based arrangement with one another and instruct the CMS to use the Collect and Pay Service. The paying parent will have to pay 20% on top of the usual child maintenance amount to the CMS and the receiving parent will have to pay 4% of the amount they are eligible to receive to the CMS, (this will be deducted from the child maintenance by the CMS before it is paid out to the receiving parent). The emphasis for parents really is on them reaching amicable agreements with one another so as to avoid both delays and fees. If you are encountering difficulties with child maintenance and/or are concerned about the changes to the system and how they may affect you then contact one of our specialist family solicitors who will be able to discuss your matter with you in a confidential environment and provide you with all the information and advice you need. A Unique Social Enterprise
Kelly’s Charity Events, part of the Kelly’s Family, the UK specialists in storage, have something quite special to share. Their concept is original and their hope is that other like minded businesses will jump on the band wagon and copy their lateral thinking. Kelly’s Charity Events pay for and organise exceptional sporting events that provide huge fund raising opportunities for local charities with whom they build long lasting relationships and who receive 100% of all money received. The first event in 2010 made £30,000 for the charity concerned and since then they have raised over £180,000 for different charities. Director Moira Martin and her husband, David Martin, owner of Kelly’s, started these charity events five years ago to help make a difference in the community. David said ‘We see Kelly’s Charity Events as an innovative model of how a business can grow profitably by helping their community and simultaneously creating a fun and inspirational workplace for their staff.’ Kelly’s Mobile Storage offers a unique self storage service, bringing containers to your home. Document storage is a major part of the business. In 2013 Kelly’s won an accolade from The Sunday Times being in the top 50 of the 100 best small businesses to work for. Their pro-active and fun-loving work force embraces the fact that the company they work for supports local, worthy charities.
This year’s event in the Kent area takes place for the first time in Shorne Woods and will also for the first time raise money for two charities, rather than one, who work closely together. The original recipient of our events in Joyden’s Wood, was the Parents Consortium. They are a small but highly regarded support agency providing a range or service and activities to families of disabled children and young people. The newest charity chYps, Children’s Hospice at Home, supports terminally ill children, young people and their families within their own homes. With many of the children in their care also attending the Parents Consortium after school and summer holiday clubs. The dual partnership is a great collaboration of strength and pro-active fundraising whilst being a tremendous support to their local community. At Shorne Woods, with 10k and 5k runs and walks, plus a children’s event, it’s lots of fun while you run! The runs and walks are professionally organised and offer superb routes to test the fittest and fastest of runners whilst remaining safe for those less experienced with off road running. Kelly’s Charity Events are designed to be family friendly affairs and the brilliant atmosphere is always commented on by those who attend. With entertaining activities, refreshments and on site parking, it will be a great day out for the family. NEXT EVENT Venue: Shorne Woods Sunday 21st Sept To register visit: www.kellystore.org

Why do we Forget?
S
(Forget-me-not! Larkfield Priory Muscial Roast Lunch)
o, Why do we forget? Why do we not forget a forget-me-not?
Some medical professionals would tell us that as we get older the brain starts dying off as a natural process. This might explain why the car keys are found in the fridge and the milk is found on the key table next to the door. The trouble is there are more things going on here than it might seem at first. The obvious is that the brain has swapped the keys and milk around. However, upon deeper reflection have the keys been mistaken for the milk, or the milk for the keys, or has the fridge been mistaken for the key table, or the key table for the fridge? Furthermore, should not the milk have been taken in before you got back from the shops (a shop who incidentally sells milk)? For if you had remembered to take the milk in before you went out then everything may still be in its rightful place. Or did you think to yourself, “I must take the milk in before I leave”, only to be diverted by not being able to find your keys, which after much searching you find hanging in the shed door (left there overnight as part of a security test, just like the long term test you are running 35 inandaround
by having a key table right near the door – well that’s what I would stick to), then once you have your keys you leave having forgot about the milk, then whilst at the shops seeing the milk on sale (and after a deep internal debate about how good the old days were with milk delivered to your door via a cutting edge modern electric float, and that it’s good to buy milk from the milkman as it not only keeps him in work but leaves you with a comforting feeling about the old days), you remember about the milk at home. Upon arriving at home the post has arrived and you get diverted by a flyer about the fabulous Sunday Roast Lunch and Music at the Larkfield Priory Hotel on the first Sunday of every month, and then without knowing it put the milk on the side and keys in the fridge! See already this simple error has become far too confusing for a sensible, good looking, intelligent person (you know the average person like you and me). So this must mean that either the medical professionals are right and your brain is naturally dying off, or that you are a decent, kind, thoughtful person who is so deeply in the midst of various security tests and social experiments upon the benefits of traditional milk delivery that with the excitement about coming to the next Priory Roast lunch with live music you tend to forget more minor things. And it’s the things we attach real value to that don’t get forgotten, they are the “forget-me-nots”, things with true values attached to them, like the Larkfield Priory Hotel Roast lunch and live music. So if I can find my keys I will see you there on the first Sunday of each month (next is 3rd Nov or 1st Dec, doors open at 12.45pm for 1.15pm start), free parking, menu and bookings and information at www.144club.co.uk or 01634 365453 or 01732 846858 But, please leave the milk at home!

Launch of the Hospice Day Service
T
his November marks the start of an ambitious period of change and development with the launch of the Hospice Day Service previously known as the Day Therapy Centre. In existence for over 30 years, the original service set out to support the needs of cancer patients who were well enough not to need an inpatient Hospice bed. This introduced a facility for patients to attend regularly for a day each week and have access to Hospice clinical and therapeutic expertise as well as an opportunity to participate in activities of interest. The Hospice Day Service now supports a growing number of other palliative patients who are diagnosed with longer term progressive or degenerative conditions including Motor Neuron Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Advanced Heart Failure and complex respiratory conditions. The Service operates from Monday to Friday between 10.30 – 3.30, with patients attending for all or part of a day according to their individual needs.
........................
MONGERS GARAGE LTD Est. 40 years
Why Not Try us For All Your Motoring Needs?
At present the Hospice Day Service can accommodate up to 20 patients each day, but will increase to 30 patients per day by 2017. In addition, the Hospice Day Service will in future provide an outreach facility so that patients can access the Service much closer to home. The Day Service is therefore looking for other suitable premises to run sessions, particularly in West Kent and North East Sussex with the first trial outreach service planned for 2014. As with all other Hospice in the Weald services, the Hospice Day Service is free of charge to all patients. Hospice in the Weald is a registered charity and is reliant on support from the local community. The cost to provide the Hospice Day Service is £90 for each patient each day. This includes the costs of specialist staff, travel costs, catering, materials and equipment. Over the year, that’s a total cost of over £375,000. In 2012, this meant we provided over 2,300 individual patient sessions. This number will only continue to grow as the Hospice Day Service develops, and we look to ensure that everyone who would like access to the service can choose to attend a session.
