Dear Readers I remember the time when my daughter was born talking to elderly ladies in the street and they would say “enjoy her, they grow up so fast” – they were right! As we get older the years just seem to go faster, don’t they? As we enter a new year we think about what new hobbies we could take up, changes in our personal life, a change of career . . . or even a new hairstyle (page 21). Our feature “Give something new a go” (page 24) provides ideas for a new hobby you could take up. Life coach Maureen Dickie gives advice to women returning to work after being at home with the children (page 31) and Maidstone Wellness Centre’s Stress advisor Amanda, talks to us about the effects stress has on our bodies. It is also a time when we reflect upon the year gone by and think of ways how we can get the most out of life. I read a great quote recently on the web; “Live the life you want to, not the life others want you too”. . . And finally, In & Around Upcoming magazine would like to wish copy deadlines you all a very happy, healthy Tuesday 19th and prosperous 2016!!! Sarah, Editor

Inspire me
winter interior design
We all know how to make a home FEEL warm – it involves practical things like double glazing, wall insulation and efficient central heating.
1
But how do you make a home LOOK warm? How do you give it that cosy feeling that looks good all the year round, but is particularly suitable for the winter months? That’s where your practical side has to take a (cosy) back seat, and allow the artsy side of you to step forward... 1) Warm textures Think of it like this – no one wears a metal scarf. So decorate your home with the textures that look as if they’d be warm to wear. Use lots of knitted textures in cushions, throws, door stops, draught excluders. Faux fur is also very effective for adding warmth. Fill your home with things you would want to touch, whether it’s wood or fabric. And keep your feet warm not just with slippers, but with carpets, rugs and floor runners. Contrast and layer material finishes, such as a leather sofa, a deep-pile wool rug and a wooden coffee table. The different textures offset each other for a beautiful, luxurious effect. 2) Warm colours Dark green, deep purple, red, orange and brown – these are the colours that are good for making a room feel cosier. In the colder months lots of white, light blue, light green and light purple make a room feel bigger and therefore colder. So if you use a light or neutral colour, balance it with some bold “splashes” – such as dark blue, red and deep green. If you do this with accessories like cushions, you can even swap things around as the seasons change. 6
IAAK Jan 2016.indd 6-7
3) Warm patterns It’s true that patterns feel warmer than plain expanses of colour, so introduce patterns to your planning whenever you can. The surprise hit this winter is tartan, available in cushions, throws, duvet covers and even a Vivienne Westwood plum and green wallpaper, if you’re feeling bold. Folksy is also a hit this winter, with a variety of Nordic-influenced “homespun” designs. In a bedroom setting, try changing your bed linen to a seasonal shade, or a cosy “winter warmer” pattern at the same time as you increase the duvet tog-rating. 4) Warm scents You probably know the old estate agent’s trick of making a house seem more welcoming to a potential buyer by unleashing the smell of freshlymade coffee. But it’s surprising how few people forget their noses when they’re decorating. Perfect scents make, erm, perfect sense for winter. They would include cinnamon, cookie dough, pine, plum, spiced apple and orange in candles, oils, reed diffusers or heated potpourri. And don’t forget the power of all those textures we mentioned earlier – the smells of wood and fabric, especially when they’re new.
2
5) Warm Fireplace Don’t just light the fire, make it a focal point. Put some eye catching accessories on the mantelpiece, and build up the hearth with beautiful ornaments (if the fire’s on) or beautiful plants (if the fireplace is purely decorative). Put a rug in front of the fireplace, add your favourite armchair nearby and perhaps a side table for a mug of cocoa – or a glass of whisky – and you’re saying “cosy” without a word being spoken.
Property
Remember “vintage” and “rustic” are cosy, winter words, whereas “modern” and “factory-made” just aren’t. That’s why pubs have old, wooden agricultural tools on the wall. 6) Warm lighting We all know that lighting make a difference to any room – and yet very few of us make the effort to actually change the lighting between summer and winter. Switch ‘cool’ light bulbs for ‘warm’ ones and even switch light shades if you’re after a more dramatic effect. Having candles at varying heights is good too, as it casts different, subtly changing light and looks more appealing. Just make sure they’re out when you are.
3
Lamps or even fairy lights inside is a great way to make a room cosier – main lights cast a harsh brightness, whereas “local” lights are a great way to add warmth and ambience. 7) Warmer by design “Open plan” is very modern of course, but it’s not necessarily conducive to the cosiness you want on a winter’s day.
4
Re-design your space in winter by using furniture like a settee or a sideboard to deliberately create smaller spaces out of a large one. Believe it or not, demand for screens is on the up, as they allow visual separation of open-plan rooms. Cunning lighting can also help to separate a cosy sitting room, for example, from the bright lights you want in a kitchen. Property Thinking of a new bedroom? Then think of us.
What does the Comprehensive Spending Review mean
for first time buyers?
One of the main aims of the Comprehensive Spending Review presented by the chancellor in November was to tackle the housing crisis – we are only building a fraction of the new homes we need. The principle highlights are: 1. Establishment of a shared ownership scheme open to families earning less than £80k per year. They can buy a bigger stake in their home over time. 2. £4 billion to be given to housing associations, local authorities and the private sector to help build 135,000 affordable homes that will be sold through shared ownership. 3. 400,000 new affordable homes will be built by 2020 of which 200,000 will be sold to first time buyers aged under 40 at a 20% discount. It all sounds very positive and there are some interesting points to note. The definition of affordable housing is low cost housing that is provided through shared ownership or at below market rent. In practice, the vast majority has been rented accommodation in the last decade, usually provided through housing associations. The chancellor seems to be aiming to redress the balance towards owner occupied housing through shared ownership. The help to buy scheme that has proved successful has been extended and there’s a new scheme where up to 40% of the value of the property will be loaned by the government, repayable after five years. The private rented sector and owners looking to buy a second home have been hit by a 3% surcharge on stamp duty. This may well be linked
8
IAAK Jan 2016.indd 8-9
to warnings from the Bank of England about a dangerous property bubble inflating in the private rented sector supported by cheap credit. There are some questions about how the plans will be funded. The £4 billion being pumped into house building should be adequate to fund the shared ownership scheme but the 20% discounts for first time buyers will cost around £6 billion and there is no indication where that will come from. Overall, it is a bold plan but we will have to see how well it works. Craig Brown

George Osborne’s Autumn Statement announced November 2015, unveiled his ‘bold plans’ to tackle the housing crisis by increasing stamp duty for second-home buyers and buy-to-let landlords. The stamp duty changes, which come into force from April 2016 will apply to anyone buying a residential property in England & Wales alongside their main home. They will have to pay an extra 3%, however if they sell the main property within 18 months, they will be able to reclaim a refund of the additional Stamp Duty. The Chancellor hopes his new measures will deter landlords and second home owners from snapping up properties, helping to ease the path to home ownership for first-time buyers. With the average buy-to let property costing £184,000 last year, this change would mean a bill of £6,700 instead of the current £1,180. It is clear that this move will have an effect on the buy-to-let market, but we may see landlords just increasing rents to cover their additional costs.

As well as the new higher rate of stamp duty, other measures designed to help first time buyers include: • Public-sector land with the capacity for 160,000 new homes will be released. • 135,000 new affordable shared ownership homes to be built for buyers earning up to £80,000 outside London and £90,000 in London. • The help-to-buy interest-free loan scheme will be boosted for homebuyers in London, enabling them to borrow double the £20,000 allowed under the current scheme. Whilst the Chancellor’s plans will make it easier for first time buyers, there is now the risk that investors will race to complete sales before the higher tax comes into force, creating a short term rise in house prices. probably best forgotten!
“A fat, middle aged fox caught in the autumn” was considered to have a wide range of healing powers. Time has long forgotten some of the mysteries surrounding the alleged curative properties of animal parts. You may wince at the list of palliative charms our ancestors used. Musk deer secretion is good for cardiac, circulatory and respiratory problems. Now we have modern science based medicine, but for centuries folkloric unguents were used to heal and cure all manner of illnesses. Long before the fox was hunted by hounds and horses he was regarded as a medicinal source for those fortunate enough to afford the best medical attention. A distillation of Pulmone vulpis – fox’s lung, no less – and reduced to a sticky paste, was considered the right treatment for ulcers, especially on the leg. Not just his lungs, with the skin and entrails discarded, the flesh was trimmed off the skeleton and boiled. When the broth had cooled the fat would be skimmed off to make Oil of Fox, an ointment used to counter joint pain and rheumatic conditions. It was still being used in the early 19th century, as distilled in spring water it was considered a good treatment for chest ailments. TMR Pest Purge edit page 1

Moles were popular too in the 18th century. A live one held until it died was believed to confer healing powers on the hands that held it. A dead mole hung around the neck would prevent toothache. Powder rendered from a skinned and dried male mole was a cure for ague. As recently as 100 years ago the severed and dried hands of a mole were carried as a talisman to fend off a variety of physical problems and evil influences, a bit like a rabbit’s foot should bring you good luck. The mole even claimed royalty as a victim or at least a molehill did. King William 111 died when his horse stumbled on a molehill and he was thrown breaking his collar bone and leading to his death from pneumonia.
The countryside was rife with these old wives tales, in 1963 a survey revealed 134 treatments for 73 conditions. Folk remedies that were to some extent still being practiced, never mind penicillin! Boiled or roast mouse was documented as a treatment for sore throats, coughs, bronchial and pulmonary ailments. The sufferer of throat and chest complaints in some counties was told to swallow a live spider or drink milk first tasted by a ferret or fox (or by a weasel in the case of a fever). Alternatively, one could imprison a live spider in a linen or black silk bag and hang it around the neck. Cuts and nosebleeds could be stemmed with spider’s webs and fried mice were also good for smallpox. What a wonderful assortment of cures, if the ailment didn’t get you, the cure probably would. Today, we have GP’s, the NHS and Pest Purge. For all your severed mole hands, or to avoid moles getting too established, call Pest Purge and get them under control. The recreation of the cinema experience within the home has been available since the early 1990’s, and over this time products have become increasingly sympathetic to room design and likely to be more accepted by the entire family within the home environment. system can be tastefully integrated within your home with consideration to room design, symmetry and acoustics. During the installation process, a degree of ‘making good’ may be required to conceal unsightly cables to create a beautifully presented end result for your family to enjoy. A correctly installed home cinema system will provide a beautiful visual balance and recreate an engaging audio experience for aerial and satellite TV broadcasts, video streams from services such as Netflix, games consoles and music and movies contained on DVD and Blu-ray discs, all within a surround sound manor. Soundbars and Sound Bases can improve upon the inferior sound quality known to plague modern TV sets, but fall far short of recreating a true home cinema surround sound experience. Home Media have designed and installed cinema systems in a variety of rooms over the years, so there really is no excuse, you CAN have your own cinema and make the most of your precious time with your loved ones.
***Offer*** for In and Around readers And here’s the good news... we have secured an exclusive offer with Home Media for readers of In and Around. Home Media will halve the installation cost when you buy a home cinema system before 31st March 2016. If you would like to learn more, then Simon and his team can provide you with a demonstration of the true cinema experience at their Union Street showroom. Home Media will then carry out a site survey to see how their installation team can provide you with a bespoke cinema system.

Advice
Stress Advice Service Maidstone Wellness Centre
Stress can be the cause of aches and pains, sleepless nights and anxiety. It can lead on to physical and psychological problems and cause disruption in relationships, work and other areas of our lives. The Stress Advice Service offers confidential one-to-one treatment for people suffering from the effects of stress. The treatment takes place in a relaxed, non-judgemental environment, with Stress Adviser Amanda. The initial consultation is used to highlight how stress is affecting you on a day to day basis and to pinpoint what your main stressors are. Subsequent sessions teach you techniques that will help you to move forward, cushion yourself against the effects of stress and enhance your resilience to it.

A CD is provided as part of the treatment, enabling you to try out Stress Management techniques at home. Stress Advice is not about avoiding stress, unfortunately this is not possible, but about managing it in a positive way, minimizing its negative effects. Stress Advice has been shown to be effective in a major government funded research project. Stress Adviser Amanda has many years experience as a Mental Health Practitioner. Health & Fitness Don’t worry, you don’t have to do it all in one go! As long as you’re getting your heart rate up for 10 minutes or more, it will count towards your 150 active minutes a week. Just 20 or 30 minutes a day will keep you on target.
Get going
every day
Go for it when you do the housework! Using the smallest attachment when you do the vacuuming and plenty of elbow grease when you clean the windows means you’ll work up a sweat.
Clean the car by hand yourself using a bucket and sponge, rather than taking it to the car wash. Good for you and your wallet and you could even get the kids to help! Get on two feet: try to walk or cycle if you can, instead of driving or taking public transport. For more ideas, try our active travel tips www.nhs.uk/change4life/Pages/change-for-life. aspx
Surprise the dog by taking it for a walk twice a day or a much longer walk than usual – you’ll both benefit!
Teston River Walk Many of us aren’t too keen on the idea of exercise. It might be that we’re too busy or we simply can’t face the thought of it. But most people are not getting the amount of activity they need to stay healthy. Only 1 in 20 people are actually doing the right kind of activity they need each week. And sitting down for hours – maybe at work, watching TV or playing computer games - can also increase the risk of poor health. Building activity into your day keeps your heart healthy, reduces your risk of serious illness and strengthens muscles and bones. It can also be a great way of reducing your stress levels and lifting your mood if you’re feeling down. That means: • Adults needs to be active for at least 150 minutes each week • Kids aged five to 16 need to be active for at least 60 minutes each day • Kids under five need three hours of activity a day Activities for adults For adults, it can seem hard to fit activity in to a busy schedule. Working and looking after the rest of the family and the home can mean there isn’t 26
IAAK Jan 2016.indd 26-27
much free time. And sometimes activity can seem expensive too - but it doesn’t have to be. It’s not just about feeling stronger, fitter and more energetic. You can also get a great sense of achievement if you decide to learn to dance or take up a new sport, and you’ll feel loads more confident too. Being active means getting your heart rate up, feeling warmer (perhaps even breaking into a light sweat) and making your lungs work harder. Try our ideas below for easy ways to get going every day! Being active is all about having fun. If we don’t enjoy it, we won’t keep it up. We all deserve to spend some time doing something we enjoy.
This walk is always a favourite with good views of the Medway Valley. This walk is about three miles long, it takes you right next to the river and through a mixture of wooded and grassland areas with good viewsof the River Medway and Maidstone. The directions are from Teston Bridge Country Park, but the walk can easily be started from Wateringbury. Directions
1 From the car park bear right over Teston Bridge. Take care over the bridge as it is narrow and the road is fairly busy - but there are passing places. Continue along the road – taking care as there is no footpath. 2 Turn right into a road marked with a ‘T’ sign and a 10mph limit. There is also a footpath sign on the left-hand side of the road. Follow this country lane past a row of Kentish weather boarded cottages. 3 Keep to the farm road, crossing the stile or cattle grid, past a pill box and huge old oak tree. The path divides just before the
oast houses – keep to the right-hand path. At Tutsham Hall bear right, past Tutsham Hall. 4 Follow the track through the farmyard and over the stile. Keep following the track past a barn on your left and through a gate into a field. 5 Carry on across the elds. The wooden poles signifythe footpath. The footpath descends, climb over the style and into Wargrave Woods. The woods can be particularly muddy, and small streams form during periods of heavy rain. 6 Continue out of the woods, and across elds, following a wire fence heading over a couple of thin wooden bridges and through a kissing gate until reaching Bow Bridge. 7 At Bow Bridge go over the stile and bear right over the bridge, taking care of trac. Just before the level crossing gates turn right on to the footpath. This takes you through gates and into Bow Bridge Marina. 8 The path forks, take the right hand track next to the river. 9 The path cuts through vegetation heading slightly away from the river, this path then rejoins the riverside. Continue to follow path through grassland, willows and areas of scrub. Pass the lock and weir back to Teston Bridge Country Park. This walk often floods during heavy rain, so can be waterlogged and very muddy
Activity doesn’t have to be expensive. Taking up a sport or joining a gym offer great opportunities to get fit, but there are also loads of fun, easy ways you can get more active for free. Try thinking about your day or week ahead and work out when you can spend a little time to get your heart rate going. Try making a weekly plan – it’ll help you see where you can it in more easily. You don’t need to go to the gym to get active. Gardening is a great way of getting outdoors and being active – you could even have fun growing your own veggies too! 27

and keep warm!
There is a new way of keeping fit that’s fun, sociable, and warm! Touchtennis is a new and easy sport that was only founded in 2002. Its popularity has soared as it is a game suitable for all ages and abilities. Played on a smaller court than normal tennis, with foam balls and lighter racquets it’s perfect for beginners or those who’ve played a bit of tennis years ago – it’s about outwitting your opponents rather than relying on strength and power blasts.
best reason to try touchtennis is simply that it’s fun! If you would like to try something new why not pop along to the Maidstone YMCA or Ditton Community Centre? Please book through enquiries@se-tennis.co.uk or speak with Julian on 07974 815 387.
Toddlers starting with Mini Tennis (the children’s version of touchtennis) often find they move up naturally to lawn tennis and older people are delighted to find they can start rallying fairly quickly. We all know that regular exercise benefits wellbeing and reduces the impact of ageing but perhaps the

The New Year can focus the mind in many ways. When we enter motherhood our values change dramatically and we can long to do work with more meaning. You know you have a lot to offer and want to have a positive impact, but can’t figure out what your contribution in the workplace is meant to be... For some mothers returning to work is overwhelming. We are immersed in a cultural expectation to return to work whether or not, deep down, one really wants to – and this can lead to some mothers returning to work on a date that is premature for them. Suppressing emotions, the pressure can feel intolerable as mothers fulfil the new assumption that they will want to return to work sooner rather than later. Interestingly, the number one regret of the dying is: ‘I wish I had lived a life true to myself, and not the life others expected of me.’ (author Bronnie Ware). We all long for clarity, to decide what is right for us. When we have this clarity, we can focus our enthusiasm on what is truly in our heart, respond to that, and prevent a life of regret.
I work 1:1, and also in small groups (with a maximum of 10 participants). My next small group will be held on Wednesday morning 27th January in a tranquil retreat set amidst beautiful countryside - Tor Spa Retreat, Ickham, Canterbury. Uncover the clarity and focus you yearn for.

I help sensitive, ambitious people figure out what they really want to do, by discovering their Purpose in life and how they would like that to become a reality. For a mother, that would naturally encompass uncovering the complex picture of how she feels about motherhood, meaning and work. 31

Loose neigbourhood plan (NP) - update
In this edition we would like to tell you about progress on NPs nationally. This is timely as over 100 plans have now passed through referendum stage. Referendum stage is when the NP is put to the residents of its area for approval (or not). Currently, there are 1650 communities working up plans. This equates to a population of about 8 million. No NPs have yet reached referendum stage in the MBC area. One of the latest NPs to complete is Hook Heath near Woking, a community of 700 homes (there are about a 1000 in Loose). Their plan objective is “to provide a safe and sustainable environment for the community focused on three main policy areas ie environment, open spaces and infrastructure”. Loose can identify with this objective and we have similar policies emerging. It took Hook Heath 3 years to prepare their plan which is in line with our progress. Analysis of the NPs across England to date identifies that the ten main policy areas are, in descending order; promote local distinctiveness, parking standards, pedestrian and cycle routes, scale/density/height of development, affordable housing, designate local green space, provision of recreational space, housing sites, encourage new employment uses, trees and woodland. Again, our plan is embracing several of these areas and others.
Do you have an indoor pool that is under used? You could generate an income by hiring it to your local swim school that needs extra pool time. Please call S.G. Swim School on 01622 745146 or email: sgswimschool@o2.co.uk
We hope that those of you that visited the NP “Exhibition and Engagement” event at the Pavilion or Church Street Chapel in December to give your views on our draft plan found it useful? We feel it went well and would like to thank those that attended and contributed. If you were unable to come to the exhibition visit the Parish Council website for details. Please contact Jan Capon at loose@btconnect.com (01622 692712) if you wish to find out more about the Neighbourhood Plan.
If you would like to include your local event, group or notice please email Sarah at info@inandaroundkent.co.uk. This is a FREE service for local non profit making organisations. 35

Main Dish 6 Oz Pork Chop 3 new potatoes (par cooked) 4 stalks Tenderstem broccoli 1 plum quartered
Garnish 75g black pudding (Slow cooked in the oven until dry) Crispy sage leaves Sliced serrano ham
How to do it: Place new potatoes (halved) in a hot pan with a touch of butter and salt & pepper, turn until golden brown then add plum quarters with a sprinkle of sugar. Place in a medium oven for 5 mins. Meanwhile, in another pan simmer the cider and allow to reduce by half. Bring the chicken stock to the boil and reduce this by half as well. Add the cream and butter and reduce by half again. Season the pork chop with salt and pepper, add a knob of butter to a hot pan and cook for the chop for 2 mins each side, spooning over the butter whilst doing so. Finish in the oven for 5 mins. Boil the Tenderstem for 5 mins.
To Serve:
Place the new potatoes on a plate with the plums with the Tenderstem arranged on top of them, then pour over the Cider cream. Halve pork chop and place on top of the cream. Sprinkle with black pudding crumb, crispy sage leaves & serrano ham.

forgot to bring
Christmas has been and gone once again leaving a trail of devastated bank balances in its wake. All those keen gardeners out there will probably have received (yet another) pair of gardening gloves, a ball of string and one of those naff little signs that reads “I’m in the Garden”!

But if there’s any wonga left over for the January sales, why not treat yourself to some properly serious equipment to make even the most tedious gardening job REALLY exciting? Take weeding, for example – the most mind numbingly boring job in the garden and single handedly responsible for turning off whole generations of would-be gardeners. Why not turn up the garden ‘funometer’ a few notches and put two words at the top of your wish list – FLAME and THROWER! Yes, you could be the proud owner of a real fire-breathing monster that will incinerate anything that gets in its way! These family friendly garden tools are based on the same technology that helped win Iwo Jima in WW2 and so are extremely effective against a few defenceless weeds – and the other good thing is that these ‘flame guns’ tick all the right organic boxes. They leave no nasty residues behind and they can be targeted against only those weeds that have their cards marked – leaving just a trail of carbonised plants in their wake! Continuing with the pyromaniac theme, I would also be dancing with joy if someone was to
send me a lovely (and extremely trendy at the moment!) fire bowl. These are the ultimate garden accessory, particularly if you have loads of spare wood that needs getting rid of. They also give you a very good excuse to open a bottle of wine, invite a few friends round and just enjoy the moment. You can pick them up in a wide variety of styles (and prices) but, essentially, they are just broad, bowlshaped steel containers that allow you to enjoy the radiant warmth of a fire without it getting out of control and setting fire to your patio furniture and heaven knows what else. Simple but very effective, these fire bowls can make a tremendous feature on a patio even when not lit… and I want one! Another great idea (for me anyway!) is virtually anything from the new range of rechargeable power tools that have recently hit the market. These are so good that the National Trust is now using them right across their estates and if it’s good enough for them, then it’s probably good enough for the rest of us! Imagine using a hedge cutter or chainsaw without having trailing cables or smelly engines to contend with! Yes please Mr B&Q, make sure that you have a wide selection available with at least 50% off. My final choice of January sale treat is a bit more tame and sensible. If you are a Springwatch viewer, I’m sure you’re as amazed as I am with those voyeuristic pictures that they take inside the nest boxes? Well, I want one – what could be nicer than watching your very own baby tits having their first flying lessons - after making sure the cat is barricaded in the house, of course! Add a Little Spice
to your Holiday
Are you feeling the effects of the winter blues; are you dreaming of white sandy beaches, crystal turquoise waters, and friendly and welcoming locals and amazing food, then let us transport you away from the cold and dreary to the wonderful island of Grenada. When I visited the island in September I didn’t really know much about it apart from the fact that it was situated below the hurricane belt and that it was known as the Spice Island of the Caribbean, well my quick introduction to Grenada left me blown away, it has so much more to offer than the usual fly and flop Caribbean holiday.
Less developed than many of the other Caribbean islands, Grenada bewitches you from the moment you arrive and offers both couples and families so much more than white sandy beaches and turquoise waters; with its wide array of low rise boutique hotels; no hotel can be higher than a palm tree, laid-back living, spice plantations and a lush rainforest interior with spectacular waterfalls it has plenty to offer. If like me your body clock is still on UK time, why not head to the beach for an early morning swim with some of the locals. If you are a passionate foodie, you’ll love exploring the wide range of restaurants, from elegant fine dining at Rhodes Restaurant at the newly refurbished Calabash Hotel, or the world renowned Oliver’s at Spice Island Beach Resort to the local restaurants such as Patricks where they sell authentic ‘Grenadian tapas’ where you can delight
in some of the local dishes infused with the islands spices; take the opportunity to try some of the organically grown cocoa and strong local rum or maybe you just prefer to relax in a hammock with a nutmeg infused rum punch! One of the places you must visit is the world’s first Underwater Sculpture Park, a collection of fantastic haunting sculptures that lie in the marine park, don’t miss the latest sculpture, the Nutmeg Princess. I was able to enjoy a dive there but it’s just as good for snorkelers as it’s in the shallow waters, Grenada itself is actually a great place to learn to Scuba Dive in the calm waters or try your hand at sailing. Enjoy the eco-adventure in the tropical rainforest at Grand Etang Nature reserve, take a dip in one of the islands breath-taking waterfalls or experience the thrill of a lifetime river tubing down the Balthazar River or scour some of the vibrant markets looking for souvenirs and of course, the islands spices.

Burnt This cooking drama had the recipe to be a smash hit. Take the key ingredients; Bradley Cooper, Sienna Miller and our hero’s chance of redemption, throw them together and it should be the perfect dish.

The film revolves around Adam Jones (Bradley Cooper), a failed chef who has left Paris with his reputation in tatters and wishes to rebuild his career in the place where it all began, London. With the drugs and alcohol addiction left behind him, Jones is handed a lifeline by his former head chef, Tony (Daniel Bruhl), who gives him the opportunity to run his restaurant at Langham Hotel. On his road to rehabilitation, he puts his old kitchen crew back together to help secure his third Michelin star. Cooper is a passionate and tempestuous character and his rants bear a striking resemblance to Gordon Ramsey. Bradley Cooper excels at playing charismatic characters; he’s done it before, most notably as Richie DiMaso in American Hustle.
Burnt boasts a strong cast but the likes of Emma Thompson and Uma Thurman are too sparingly used. Adam Knight’s script, albeit formulaic, is witty and is aided by a strong performance from Cooper. In the kitchen, the scenes are intense and frenzied, pulling the audience into the culinary world with all its pressure and the chef’s creative whirl, leaving you longing to be in a restaurant yourself. Director John Wells delivers another drama based on the theme of the lead character’s struggles with himself. His best known works are ‘August: Osage County’ and ‘The Company Men’ and this is familiar territory for Wells. It’s hard to shake off comparisons to the 2014 comedy ‘Chef’ with Jon Favreau in the lead role as a man who quits his job to start afresh. But Burnt is different; we don’t necessarily like Jones to begin with, but we warm to him and will him to succeed. If you want to see an enjoyable film, this is definitely worth a watch, but don’t set your expectations too high.
