An Insight to Reflexology
When I explain Reflexology to some people their reaction is “I can’t bare my feet being touched because I am ticklish!” But after just one treatment they come back for more leaving with a big smile feeling totally relaxed. Reflexology can help if you suffer from stress, anxiety, insomnia, high blood pressure and any other complaints and is a treatment everyone should have in their life. It’s amazing what you can find out from your feet. How does it work you ask? Well, there are 7,000-7,200 nerve endings in the human foot, and each of these has a reflex point that corresponds to a body part. Pressure is applied to stimulate reflex points, which will stimulate the flow of energy to the corresponding body part. This gradually helps to restore and stimulate the body’s ability to heal itself, physically and emotionally. The movements are quite precise and firm. Imbalances manifest themselves through crystals at the affected reflex point, which vary from being slightly crunchy like sugar to lumps of varying sizes. Dispersing these crystals is what unblocks energy channels, and this is done by applying firm pressure with the thumb (or fingers depending on where on the foot the reflex point is). Reflexology treatments may help couples, expecting mums, and new mums in many ways. Specialised pre conception reflexology may help couples prepare a healthy, balanced environment for conception and may encourage ovulation. It might also help you achieve a successful conception and pregnancy and encourage the natural onset of labour. (Reflexology is not recommended during first trimester of pregnancy). 6
inandaround
Reflexology can also be of great support from the second trimester of pregnancy, helping relieve all the various pregnancy related problems: digestion, heartburns, back problems, restless leg, cramps, anaemia, stress, anxiety. Reflexology can be a great ally in your preparation for the birth of your baby, as well as help trigger the onset of natural labour. After birth, reflexology can help balance the hormones, increase the production of breast milk, boost the immune system, help lift moods, prevent depression, and regulate sleep pattern. During my pregnancies I discovered reflexology the only treatment I was comfortable having and most beneficial. After the birth of my second child I completed my advanced training to be able to help others. I have been awarded VTCT Level 3 Diploma and Diploma in Preconception,Pregnancy & Post Natal Care. I’m Lisa by the way, I work part time as a mobile therapist and live in Loose. Best of all, I love my job. I love helping people so if you are looking for alternative therapy please contact me on 01622 433258 or 07736 341533. Reflexology by Lisa

Loose Neighbourhood Plan - Update
T
he Loose Parish Council Neighbourhood Plan (NP) is moving into a new stage of its preparation which will lead to an outline plan by December. The PC has reappointed Feria Ltd as its consultant to help take it to this stage. Feria will have an input into the work (eg public consultations) that the PC will undertake alongside its own work. The model will be that proposals and ideas from the parish will be put into a format for further public consultation from time to time. From the work undertaken so far some policy areas are emerging;- Access and Movement (eg footpaths, cycling, speed limits, parking, traffic calming, rat-runs) Landscape Protection (eg views, trees, landscapes, coalescence) and Design Quality (eg development design appropriateness, density, parking, setting, materials, boundaries, public realm issues). These ideas, as well as others, will be evaluated over the coming months with your help. Two opportunities to discuss the NP will be at the Duck Race on 25 May in the village and at the Fete on 5 September on the King George playing field.
8
inandaround
An important element of any NP is that it must give an opportunity for those in “hard to reach groups to have an input. This may be geographical like the properties in Busbridge Rd/Stockett Lane or Hubbards Lane which are on the outskirts of the parish. It may be the old or those not able to get about. It could even be teenagers. If you live in the parish and feel that you wish to, but are unable to have an input into the NP, please contact Jan Capon. The PC has a dedicated group of volunteers that give their time to help the PC with their work on this project. If you feel you would also be interested in doing so, or joining the Steering Group please contact Jan Capon at loosepc@ btconnect.com (01622 692712)

Dog’s Dinner Or Haute Cuisine……..?
“Cooking is not difficult. Everyone has taste, even if they don’t realise it.” Not one of that great French actor, Gerard Depardieu’s, most famous lines, but one which de-mystifies in a couple of well-aimed sentences the ’art’ of cookery – and it applies equally well to gardening. Aside from the fact that no one has actually died as a result of getting it wrong with the ingredients when going off the gardening piste, there are lots of glaring similarities – particularly when it comes to taste, probably one of the most subjective words in the English language. Good taste is achieved by mixing the right combinations of flavours using the right techniques, be that in the pot or the border. But, just as Heston Blumenthal’s Savoury Porridge may be a snail too far for most (sane) people, the sight of garish ranks of bedding plants and overflowing hanging baskets may be a Marigold short of a disaster – it’s all a matter of personal as opposed to good taste at the end of the day! I’ve just spent a few (back breaking) days completely renovating some old herbaceous borders that I planted about 6 years ago. The beds have now become a solid mass of Rudbeckias, Astrantias, Achilleas, Delphiniums, Campanulas, Phlomis, Day Lilies, Asters, Miscanthus, Sedums, Lupins and self-seeded Knautia’s. The few weeds that have managed to survive in the tangled mass of roots are the tough cookies like ground elder and docks – the rest get eaten alive by the herbacous hordes! Last summer it was a riot of colour for months. The Border last Summer!
This border certainly never followed a recipe and has grown into a real WILD Garden over the years, with much of the lovely structural and colour combinations undoubtedly a result of the gardening gods taking pity on a plant cleptomaniac! I’m as bad and as gullible as 10 inandaround
anyone else when it comes to in-season plants on offer at the garden centre and if I see bare earth, then it has to be filled. The net result is a complete jumble of plants that has meant a continual (and losing) battle trying to stake some of the more needy species such as the Delphiniums; they get brutalised by armies of slugs and flop over as soon as they can. The Border now!
Like all herbaceous (or should that be hardwork?) borders, it was in need of a complete spring clean. After splitting all the clumps I’m now the proud owner of copious amounts of plants – but am struggling with the happy dilemma of how to rebuild it, not something you would have thought I should have a problem with! All the ‘recipe’ books on good planting (have a look at the RHS Encyclopedia of Planting Combinations) dictate that plants should be grouped for maximum impact – a principle I always follow in customers’ gardens but fail miserably to adhere to in my own. So now is the perfect opportunity to toe the line and rationalise the varieties of plants to increase the aesthetics… but then I get thinking about all the insects that have really enjoyed the smorgesbord of nectar flavours on offer from last year’s display and how much pleasure I got from sneaking in a new plant I hadn’t tried before. To a lot of design purists my border, stuffed to the gunwales with an eclectic mix of plants, is something that they can’t comprehend – a bit like mixing the produce from The Fat Duck and a Harvester Inn. All I will say to them is watch this space - my whimsical flair and taste for tripe and onions could mean a whole new look this year!!

Holiday Villas – A word of caution
I
f you are disorganised enough to have left booking your summer holiday until now, you are probably desperately hunting through websites such as Owners Direct trying to find a villa that is free for a week in August. There are plenty of similar sites around; they offer owners a cost effective means of renting out their properties and frantic holidaymakers a supply of villas that have been overlooked by the big travel companies. But there is a growing problem with such websites; they are in effect advertising portals along the lines of Gumtree and are not regulated by ABTA or any similar organisation. Because of this, they are increasingly being targeted by internet fraudsters who masquerade as owners and steal deposits and upfront payments. Last year, some people lost thousands of pounds, not to mention having nowhere to go on holiday. Many owners have also wound up out of pocket because their villas have remained empty during the busy summer months, or they’ve felt obliged to honour the booking even though the rental money has been paid to someone else. It is often assumed that the scammers hack into the owner’s website account and then divert any enquiries to themselves, but this isn’t usually the case. Security on these websites tends to be pretty good and also the owner would normally receive an email to say their account details had been changed. Instead, how the scam works is this: the fraudster contacts a number of owners through the site with an enquiry. The owners reply to the query and in so doing provide their email addresses. He attempts to hack the email addresses; in the cases where he succeeds, he redirects any incoming emails to his own email. When a genuine enquiry comes in, he responds to it himself, takes the booking and arranges for the deposit to be transferred into his bank account. If he times it right, he can also bag the final payment. Then, a month before the holiday season gets into full swing, he empties the bank account and disappears. I must stress that such frauds are very uncommon and affect only a tiny fraction of bookings made via such sites, the vast majority of which are mutually satisfactory to both
sides. Even so, there are some simple steps that people can take to ensure that they don’t get caught out. As a holidaymaker, when you make your initial enquiry, ask for a phone number. If it looks like a place you are interested in booking, call the owner up to ask some general questions such as how close is the villa to shops and restaurants. A genuine owner will be able to answer your questions in detail. If the owner is reluctant to give a contact number or doesn’t respond to your messages, proceed with caution. Check to see if the villa has its own website; a lot of them do. A fraudster would have neither the desire nor the means to set up a website so the presence of one provides reassurance that the details are genuine. Finally, try to pay by credit or debit card as your payment will be protected by the card issuer. A lot of owners employ the services of a local letting agent to process payments, hand over keys and arrange cleaning and other services so you may well be able to do this. The best thing that owners can do is use an email linked to a domain, for example info@marbellavillas.co.uk. These email addresses are usually protected by randomly generated passwords and are far more secure than those provided by the main ISPs such as Hotmail or Gmail addresses. If this is not possible, use a password containing a random assortment of at least eight letters, characters and numbers when you set up the account. Don’t store the password on your computer. Wherever you go and however you decide to book your holiday, have a great time. inandaround

The Cream Of Catalunya for €4, it’s likely to be the best bin end you’ll have had in a long while. Venturing a little further within the Priorat region, follow the Siurana River upstream, to discover the hilltop town and lake of the same name. If you enjoy hillwalking or climbing, park at the bottom and ascend using one of the healthier routes. Alternatively there is a car park at the top but, beware, this can get quite full. The views from the summit are simply spectacular!
E
xpecting my visit, an old school friend in London approached his usual wine merchant and, knowing of my appreciation of hearty Spanish reds, purchased a recommended bottle. On arrival, I was offered a glass and was completely blown away. The wine was a Priorat, a closely guarded Spanish (or more precisely Catalan) secret for many years, only recently finding its way into UK outlets, generally at a price way above better known Spanish reds like Rioja. On the strength of that one bottle (and a few others consumed over the following weeks), I decided the origin of this spectacular wine would be a worthwhile and enjoyable destination for my ten day summer holiday. I flew to Barcelona, hired a car and drove down the Autopista to Tarragona before heading inland. The vineyards are planted on terraces on the steep mountainsides and the roads follow the terrain. Believe me, the hardest part is keeping your eyes off the striking landscapes and on the sometimes hair-raising roads. I rented an apartment in Torroja del Priorat, a largely peaceful and very family-friendly village nestled on a mountainside in the shadow of the imposing Montsant mountains; it is the home of the regulatory body of the Priorat denomination and proved an excellent base to explore the area. In Porrera, do join the friendly locals for a glass of wine outside Vinum & Co in the Plaça Catalunya in the early evening (the local Clos Dominic 2012 Priorat was superb). Gratallops, probably the most prolific of the wine producing villages, is home of the excellent Vinicola del Priorat which not only sells a wide choice of bottles, but also arranges vineyard tours. A hint: pick up an un-labelled bottle from the barrel by the cash desk
14 inandaround
If, like me, you enjoy sourcing local produce and cooking at home, there are plenty of small traders around to assist. For those looking for an easier life, each village has at least one eatery and the restaurant in Torroja, Cal Joc, made the most of local produce (including the fantastic wines) and comes highly recommended. For more of a fine dining experience, jump in the car and head into Tarragona (about 30 minutes’ drive). The walled old town, high on the hill overlooking the busy industrial port below, offers a wealth of treasures for both dining and indulging in the general cafe society. I can’t wax lyrical enough about how Restaurant Arcs tickled my taste buds with a freshly caught fish salad with red pepper ice cream (and that was just the starter)! For something less formal, Txantxangorri, on the main square, Plaça de la Font, offered probably the best tapas I’ve had outside San Sebastian. If you want to explore beyond the immediate region, Lleida is a 90 minute drive inland. This university town has a fascinating military history from Roman times up to the Spanish Civil War. Seu Vella, the original cathedral turned military fortress, is an amazing piece of architecture and well worth a visit. If you’d rather hit the coast, L’Ampolla (about 75 minutes’ drive south) is a pleasant, underdeveloped little harbour resort with reasonable restaurants and is a gateway to the stunning beaches surrounding the nature reserve at the River Ebro’s delta. Travelling to Spain at any time comes with some baggage of preconceptions. This trip, however, definitely laid many of those to rest faster than I could scoff the local speciality, Crema Catalana, and uncork a bottle of wine.

Ben Scores a place in World Youth Cup Ben’s selection for the 16-man squad means not only does he get to play against the likes of Crystal Palace FC and Brighton and Hove Albion FC, but he gets to compete against team from more than 80 countries worldwide in the Gothia Cup, the World Youth Cup, which takes place each year, during the summer, in Sweden. Mr Davey said: “It is a superb achievement to get selected for the South East team but taking part in the World Youth Cup will be an amazing experience.” The World Youth Cup attracts more than 50,000 spectators to its opening ceremony, which takes place this year. More than 1600 teams are expected to take part.
A
football-mad schoolboy from Maidstone will soon be packing his bags to take part in the pretigious World Youth Cup. Ben Findlay (10) from Chartway Street, Sutton Valence and a pupil at Sutton Valence Prep School, trialled for the Independent School Football Association (ISFA) South East squad at Ardingly, Sussex, back in November.
He was put forward for the trials by the prep school’s football coach Tom Davey, who said: “Ben captained our unbeaten Colts A team last term. Despite playing for Maidstone United and the Maidstone District side, I felt the trials would give him the opportunity to be stretched at a higher level and would test him against the best in the region.”
Mr Davey said: “Throughout the season, Ben was definitely our best player. He is a very good leader and has the wonderful ability to use both feet. He works incredibly hard for his team and I’m sure he will be a great asset to the ISFA side.”

The organising team for the Kent County Show is pleased to announce the main displays and entertainment for the event which takes place on Friday 10, Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 July 2015.
Visitors to Doddington Place Gardens on 3rd and 4th May will have the chance to go wild, learning the arts of bushcraft, archery and falconry, as the gardens have a spring countryside celebration day.
The star attraction on Friday 10 July will be RAF Aerobatic Team, The Red Arrows. One of the world’s premier display teams will be flying above the Kent Showground to the delight of visitors.

The Metropolitan Police Mounted Branch Activity Ride will be performing on all three Show days. The ride provides a fast moving display demonstrating a high level of skill and agility from both horse and officer. Inch perfect timing, commitment, professionalism and total trust are required as horses jump through fire, a solid paper wall and complete fast crossovers. The riders remove their stirrups, tunics and saddles whilst riding their horses over a series of bush jumps.
The spectacular gardens at Doddington Place are springing into bloom, with flowers in stunning colours and arrangements, and a walk across the estate is a wonderfully peaceful treat at the end of a busy week. In addition to the have a go events, birds of prey will also be flying at 3pm in a spectacular free-flying demonstration, with the chance to see more Hawks, Owls, and Falcons in action. The tea room offers delicious homemade light lunches, homemade cakes and afternoon teas – the perfect place to enjoy a great day out! Property Feature
...................
Buying a property as a pension fund
W
ith the changes to pension rules coming into effect, it’s expected that a lot of people of people will withdraw cash from their pension fund and invest it in property instead. This makes sense; returns on pension funds and endowment policies have been meagre in recent years whereas house prices rose 8.4% last year alone. But there are some things to be aware of. Property should be viewed as a long term investment; prices can be volatile in the short term and expenses such as stamp duty can wipe out any short term profits. Assuming you’re buying a property with a view to renting it out, there are two sources of profit. The first is rental income, often known as the yield. Average yields on residential property are currently running at around 6% (a property bought for £100k would yield £6,000 rental income per year). In addition, there are the capital gains as the property increases in value over time. Property investors have tended to focus on the yield since the financial
20 inandaround
crisis but in a fairly buoyant property market, equal emphasis should be put on capital gains. Don’t forget that letting agent’s fees, insurance and maintenance costs must be deducted from the rental income and landlord insurance is more expensive than normal property insurance. Also, if your tenant runs up sizeable arrears, you will have to bear the cost of evicting them and you are unlikely to ever recover the lost rent. Similarly, any void periods will impact on the rental yield. Do your homework. If houses are very cheap in the area you are looking to buy in, it is probably for a reason. A few years down the line you will at best see modest capital gains and will probably struggle to sell your property. It is always better to buy a smaller property in a more desirable area; you will also attract more reliable tenants. Finally, as with any investment, seek professional advice before you part with your hard earned cash.

Motoring Feature
....................
Mazda 3
M
azda has long been an unsung hero of the motoring world; other than the marvellous MX5, I can’t remember when I last drove one. Unfortunately, this is a global phenomenon – Mazda has lost almost half of its market share in Europe since 2008. This means that the 3 matters; it’s a family hatchback pitched against the likes of the Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra and, as such, it is far and away the biggest seller in their model range. The fortunes of the entire company rest on this car. When you first see it in the flesh, you know they’ve a good start. With swooping curves, sculpted profiles and panels that seem to have been shrink wrapped onto the body shell, this is possibly the best looking car in its class. This is a step change from the previous model with its bluff, chunky styling. The real improvements, though, are all under the skin. Mazda’s all new cross range platform, dubbed SkyActiv, involves lashings of ultra-high strength steel, meaning that this new car is far more rigid and considerably lighter than the previous model. Sadly, these good first impressions are not carried through into the interior. Yes, the seats are comfy, the ergonomics are sound and there’s plenty of space, but the Cyclops style instrument binnacle is ugly and hard to read, the plastics in the bottom half of the cabin are distinctly low rent and the whole thing lacks class. Everything is monochrome; there is nothing to
add any sort of wow factor and it’s all a bit of a disappointment after that svelte exterior. On the plus side, there’s plenty of kit as standard including Bluetooth and a 7” infotainment screen. This is not a car that will shift thousands of units in fleet sales and this is reflected in the range of engines. There’s just one diesel, a 2.2 litre twin turbo that boasts a relatively modest 148bhp, not to mention carbon emissions above the 100g tax break. By comparison, there is a choice of three petrol engines – a 99bhp 1.5 litre and a 2.0 litre with either 118 or 163bhp. Mazda has avoided following VW down the path of small turbo engines with big power outputs, claiming that in real world driving they don’t deliver the promised fuel efficiency. There’s another point that Mazda don’t mention; those high efficiency engines are expensive to manufacture and this is reflected in the list prices of the Golf for instance, which makes the Mazda look remarkably good value. I drove the more powerful 2.0 litre and was impressed. It’s a sweet revving unit with plenty of low down
torque and enough grunt to push the car up to 62mph in 8.2 seconds. I also managed a combined mpg of 44mpg which is none too shabby. The levels of refinement are not the best in class but they’re not unacceptable either and it’s no great hardship listening to the rasping engine note. That solid performance is also backed up by excellent handling. There are no party pieces such as ultra-fast turn in or lift off oversteer, just predictable road manners with minimal body roll, plenty of feel through the steering and good levels of grip. Unfortunately, the ride doesn’t meet those same high standards; it is jittery over small bumps and generally a little coarse, though by no means bad. The Mazda 3 is not going to knock the VW Golf off its lofty perch but its spirited performance, lively handling and seductive styling should take the fight to rest of the competition and hopefully attract some new buyers. Certainly, at the level it is priced, it makes a very good case for itself. I’ll give it the thumbs up. Car as tested Mazda 3 2.0 litre 163 £21,920 RRP

Maidstone River Run
German Beer Festival comes to
Sunday May 31st 2015
Maidstone Saturday 30th May
How many races have you been to that begin with a train ride? Probably none ! Thats why this unique trail run had such excellent feedback last year, as 130 runners boarded a train at Maidstone West station and took the 8 minute journey up to Wateringbury where everyone disembarked and made their way to the Marina where the start is. At the sound of the horn they set off down the path which never leaves the side of the River and goes under some bridges, over others, crossing walkways and through “kissing” gates. Anyone over 6ft 2” is strongly advised to DUCK at the Barming road bridge where the tunnel underneath is particularly low! The run finishes outside the David Lloyd Club in Maidstone Town Centre where last year spectators lined the footbridge to give support to the finishers. The distance covered is approx 8.6k. We are now fully supported by the David Lloyd Club in Maidstone who are providing us with changing and WC facilities as well as a wide range of prizes and offers , the Mayor of Maidstone will be on hand to present trophies to the winners. All proceeds from this event are going to BREAST CANCER RESEARCH (so far we have raised over £3,000!).
The Beerfest UK brings the “Oktoberfest” theme to the UK with fine real German ales from across the breadth of Germany, the sounds and stirring of time-honoured oomph music with traditional drinking songs and dances to sizzling foods and entertainment to make the evening a really memorable one for all.
Registration will open at 8am for collection of race numbers and for ENTRIES ON THE DAY and are in a marquee just beside David Lloyd Health Club , from where we will begin the short walk to the station at about 9.45 in order to board the 10.00am train which will arrive at Wateringbury at 10.08 , the race will then start at the Marina at 10.20 .. Please register in plenty of time as the train will not wait or come back for stragglers. Its also FREE parking in the Market car park on a Sunday! www.runningandriding.co.uk

Don’t let financial claims linger after divorce
One of the higher profile divorce cases to hit the news in recent weeks was the case of Wyatt v Vince in the Supreme Court. After a short marriage, Ms Wyatt had been divorced from Mr Vince way back in the 1990’s, and Mr Vince had gone on to become a multi-millionaire. Ms Wyatt was seeking a financial settlement from Mr Vince, having brought their son up alone and with no financial support from his father. The Supreme Court overturned an earlier decision saying that she had no right to make the claim, and the matter will progress in the lower courts to establish, what, if anything, she is entitled to.
end the marriage financially, it is necessary to have a Court Order. The fact is simply ending a marriage legally, in divorce, does not end the financial claims between the parties. So long as a party does not enter into a new marriage, they remain able to claim against their former spouse. The case of Wyatt v Vince shows us that there is no automatic time limit beyond which claims are ended, this shows the importance of the advice that myself and my colleague Gail give on a daily basis, you must ask the court to end your financial claims. Often couples feel that they have no financial assets to speak of, maybe the relationship was short, they did not own any property, there was nothing to argue about. What this case shows, is that it is not just your current wealth that needs protecting, it is your future assets.
but we do strongly recommend it be drawn up by a solicitor, with both parties having the opportunity to obtain independent legal advice. Once the divorce has reached Decree Nisi stage, the agreement can be sent to the Court for the Judge’s approval. Neither party need actually attend Court, and the judge just requires some basic financial information to have some context in which to set the agreement. Alzheimer’s Disease
A
lzheimer’s disease is a physical disease that affects the brain and is the commonest cause of dementia, a set of symptoms including memory loss and difficulties with language, thinking and problem-solving. Alzheimer’s affects more than half a million people in the UK and the risk of developing it increases with age; it occurs most often over the age of 65 and is slightly more prevalent in women than men. Around 1 in 20 people with the condition are under 65 and this is called early-onset Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s disease is caused by a build-up of proteins in the brain which are known as ‘plaques’ and ‘tangles’; these lead to a loss of connections between nerve cells and eventual death of these cells and loss of brain tissue. Over time, this damage spreads to several areas of the brain, such as the grey matter (responsible for processing thoughts) and the hippocampus (responsible for memory). Alzheimer’s sufferers also have an increased breakdown of acetylcholine due to a preponderance of acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme that degrades acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is needed for the muscles to work properly, for the central nervous system to function effectively and for the retention of short term memories, so this insufficiency is responsible for 30 inandaround
making many of the symptoms more pronounced. Alzheimer’s Disease is progressive; generally the symptoms are mild to begin with but they get worse over time and start to interfere with daily life. Early signs of the disease may be forgetting about recent conversations or events and forgetting names of people, places or objects. As the condition develops, the memory worsens and symptoms may include confusion, disorientation, personality changes such as becoming aggressive or demanding, hallucinations and delusions, paranoia, speech and language problems and mobility problems.
Early Diagnosis enables the patient and their families to plan care for the future and medication is available which can sometimes slow down progression of the disease, so it is advisable to seek medical advice as soon as possible if you suspect Alzheimer’s disease.

The secret oppressed minority
M
any years ago I owned a house in Sheffield. The company I was working for went bust and the only place I could get another job was in Nottingham. Unable to afford the commuting costs and reluctant to spend 3 hours a day travelling, I decided to move into digs in Nottingham and rent out my house in Sheffield. Nowadays, I’d be known as an accidental landlord; back then I was just some bloke who couldn’t pay his mortgage. A few years later I sold the house for pretty much exactly what I paid for it; the rent more than covered the mortgage but I just didn’t want the hassle. I have often kicked myself for making that decision. I saw my house on Rightmove ten years later; if I’d have hung onto to it I’d have made a profit of over £100,000, not to mention the income I’d have received from increasing rents against a background of falling interest rates. Hindsight is a wonderful thing of course and these days I’m not a landlord, accidental or otherwise, but I do publish a magazine for landlords in the private sector, imaginatively entitled Private Sector Landlord. As a result, I’ve come to realise that landlords are some of the most reviled people in the country, almost up there with bankers and parking wardens. If you don’t believe me, just take a look at the Have Your Say section of the BBC website after they’ve run a story about Buy to Let landlords. The comments are full of abuse and vitriol from aggrieved tenants. Some of them are because the rent is too high or because the landlord has failed to fix some problem promptly enough, but most resent their landlord because their rent is being used to pay off their landlord’s mortgage… or because he makes a profit on his property… or simply because he owns several houses and they own none. This ingrained resentment has been capitalised on by politicians at both a national and local level. New regulation is constantly being heaped on private landlords – they are told how many tenants they can rent their houses out to, made personally responsible for their tenants’ behaviour and made to comply with standards infinitely more strict than those homeowners are subject to. Local councils use them as a piggy bank 32 inandaround
by applying blanket licensing schemes – landlords have to pay up to £1000 per property simply to operate. I recently read about a woman who was sentenced to 6 months in jail and fined almost £11,000 for illegally evicting her tenants: she didn’t follow due process. Alright, she broke the law but if a finance company didn’t follow due process when repossessing a car, the owner would have to bring a civil case to get their money back. Nobody would be going to prison. Here’s the thing, though. The number of households that rent privately exceeded those in social housing last year; almost 4 million. But for private landlords, that’s 4 million households that would still be living with mum and dad or wouldn’t have a roof over their heads. There’s another thing too; over half of the new homes built in the last few years have been bought by private landlords. Some may say this is a bad thing but, without them taking up the slack, many large house builders would have gone to the wall and we simply wouldn’t have the wherewithal to build all those new homes we so desperately need. I would be the first to admit that there are still rogue landlords out there but they are becoming ever fewer, partly because of greater regulation but mainly because tenants are voting with their feet. Why live in squalor when there is plenty of good quality housing out there? One last thing, it is estimated that there are over 2 million private sector landlords in the country. As oppressed minorities go, that’s a pretty large one… and they all have a vote.

Orange & Honey Flapjack
T
his is a wonderfully simple recipe but very rewarding and SO much better than the mass produced service station alternatives. You can add whatever flavours you want to, so experiment all you like - but orange and honey is a great way to start! Ingredients: 200g oats 125g unsalted butter 50g golden syrup 65g honey 1 orange zest 300g orange juice ½ tsp salt 40g light brown soft sugar 34 inandaround
Method: In a large sauce pan reduce the orange juice by at least three quarters on a low heat, until it is thick and syrupy. Add into this same pan the butter, syrup, honey, orange zest and sugar. Heat gently until the butter is melted and sugar dissolved. If the pan is big enough, add the oats directly into the mix – it saves on washing up – or tip into a bowl and then add the oats. Mix thoroughly and tip out and spread evenly onto a lined baking tray. It wants to be about 1.5 to 2cm deep.
Bake in a pre-heated oven at 160C for about 15-20 minutes until it turns golden and starts to crisp round the edges. If you like it crunchier then cook a little more and let the colour deepen. Allow to cool, then cut a large slice and eat secretly before offering to others!

Chappie (15)
Director: Neill Blomkamp
A
n engineer at a South African robotics company illicitly creates the world’s first true artificial intelligence. Neill Blomkamp suffers from a curse many of us would gladly bear. His debut feature, 2009’s District 9, in which a dystopian future human race holds an alien civilisation capture in Johannesburg, was a brilliant allegory for South Africa’s historical and modern racial divides. Perhaps more important to the average moviegoer, it was smart, funny, exciting and deeply affecting at an emotional level. This is all well and good, but for all the way it increased Blomkamp’s stock in the movie-scene, it also served to sharpen the knives for his ‘difficult second album,’ 2013’s far less
impressive Elysium, which was clunky, poorly paced and full of half-ideas and fantastical concepts stretched out to cover a hollow framework that stumbled around like the Tinman asking where his heart was. Simply put, Blomkamp had set the bar too high with District 9. Chappie has not been universally loved by critics; many see it in the same vein as Elysium, too nervously excited at its own premise and set-up. But this, I suspect, is a problem of perspective. District 9 was so memorable and Elysium so the opposite that a certain hypersensitivity to Chappie’s flaws overshadows what is, in my opinion, a wonderful film about a robot who can feel. The narrative is somewhat unconventional,
featuring characters that constantly keep us guessing in terms of the role they will play in the final third. The lack of depth to some of these creations betrays the broadly allegorical nature of Blomkamp’s script but, aside from a few uncomfortable lines, these metaphors are (rightly) secondary to the relationship between Chappie (Sharlto Copley) and his adopted human mother (Yolandi Visser). This relationship is just one cog in the interconnected human influences on Chappie, and the one that plays the least driving influence on the film’s plot, but it is the emotional core of the movie, what really allows us to believe a robot is alive.
