Christmas shopping and
festive fun at
The Canterbury Tales
There are plenty of great reasons to visit The Canterbury Tales in the run-up to Christmas. In November, the award-winning attraction is throwing open its doors for the return of its popular Christmas Artisan Gift Fair a special festive market with a medieval twist. Enjoy some authentic mead at the famous Tabard Inn before stepping back in time to the streets of 14th-century England and browsing gifts from a host of talented Kent artisans and crafters. The stalls will be set among the attraction’s vibrant tableaux, which depict five of Chaucer’s most famous stories. Entrance to the fair is FREE and visitors will be given discount vouchers so they can return with family and friends and experience The Canterbury Tales over Christmas and the New Year. Visitors can also check out The Canterbury Tales’ own medieval gift shop, which has a range of fun, fascinating and unusual gift ideas – including the Hall of Names, which provides a wealth of information about your family surname, as well as a full colour rendition of the earliest coat of arms once associated with the name. For something quirky, there’s everything from gothic giftware to cheeky knight wine bottle holders. Striking green dragon puppets make the perfect gift for kids who love myths and magic, while grown-ups can get into the festive spirit with a bottle of mead.
The Christmas Artisan Gift Fair takes place on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 November, between 10.30am and 4.30pm.
Then on December 19 and 20, The Canterbury Tales will be transformed into a festive wonderland. Start your adventure at the Tabard Inn, where Santa’s elf will be wrapping gifts in front of the roaring fire. With carol singing and jolly pilgrims along the way it’s off through the snowfilled streets of old London in search of the Christmas tree, where the whole family can dress up in elf costumes for a fun photo opportunity. Youngsters can also write down their Christmas wish and post to Santa in the attraction’s special mail box. As you continue along the cobbled road, be sure to stop for mead tasting (adults only!) before visiting Santa’s grotto, where there will be a gift for every child. Tickets for the Magical Medieval Christmas cost £7 for adults, £10 for children. For more information about both events, or to book tickets for the Magical Medieval Christmas, call 01227 454888 or visit www.canterburytales.org.uk.

Tudor Oak Managing Director Sasha Kamenetski said: “We were honoured to be approached by Anna with such an exciting and high-profile commission. When the film’s production team announced that the furniture was needed in double-quick time, the whole Company set to work to make sure we didn’t let them down. Along with everyone else playing a part in such a famous project, we were sworn to secrecy, so it’s fantastic to now be able to talk openly about our links to the famous James Bond brand. Who knows, maybe, one day, Tudor Oak furniture will become as synonymous with high quality and tradition as Bond’s Aston Martin and his love of all things British. I would like to personally thank everyone involved in this project, and especially our 2nd Year Apprentice Haydn Potter, for all the hard work and dedication they showed in delivering these chairs within the extremely tight timelines we were set. They are a credit to Tudor Oak and to themselves.” For further information please contact Sasha Kamenetski,

Hope for
IBS sufferers
Many clients come in to the practice with symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. One in ten visits to the GP and 50% of referrals to gastroenterologists are related to IBS, giving an indication of the scale of the problem. IBS is strictly speaking not a disease but a combination of a number of digestive symptoms such as abdominal pain and spasms, bloating, gas and abnormal bowel movements which are defined as a ‘syndrome’. The malaise resulting from IBS however is very real with many patients feeling uncomfortable about leaving the house due to the unpredictability of their bowel movements. There can be wider repercussions to IBS as chronic loose bowels for example can result in deficiencies in the body which can contribute to other health issues. Not coincidentally IBS patients often have additional symptoms such as (migraine) headaches, fatigue, bladder irritation, frequent infections or insomnia, as these systems are all affected by imbalances in the gut. However there is hope for patients and to pinpoint possible causes we ask the client detailed questions about their digestive symptoms, their medical history, lifestyle and dietary habits. The root causes to IBS are often a mixed picture of stress, reduced enzyme activity, dysbiosis (an imbalance of good versus bad gut bacteria), food sensitivity, infection, hormonal imbalances, intake of processed foods, adverse effects of medication (e.g. antibiotics), lactose intolerance, environmental sensitivities etc. which we can all assess during the consultation. The emphasis with nutrition is to support digestion in the relevant areas of the digestive tract (stomach, small intestine, bowel),
give guidelines for a nutritious anti-inflammatory diet and appropriate supplementation for example with high strength probiotics or plant based enzymes. Balancing the digestive tract in this way has positive consequences throughout the body and many people also find relief for their other symptoms for the first time in months or even years. Where will the
Housing Crisis Strike Next? The National Housing Federation, a trade body for housing associations, has recently released a report laying bare the shortfall between estimated demand and the number of houses actually built over the last four years.
leading to high unemployment putting downward pressure on wages. With the mortgage rationing that still continues, this has created a problem with affordability for buyers, and housing associations and councils have not done enough to plug the gap. It will be some time yet before we are building enough new homes to meet our needs. Craig Brown
The NHF estimated that 974,000 homes needed to be built in England between 2011 and 2014 in order to keep up with demand. In reality, only 457,500 were built, a shortfall of 516,500 or 53%. The report breaks the shortfall down by region and it is little surprise that the greatest shortfall was in London where 265,000 houses were required against 170,000 actually built. Interestingly, this equates to a shortfall of 36%, still a dramatic underperformance but considerably less than the national average. The worst performing area is the South West where less than 20,000 homes were required but barely 5000 were built in the period, a shortfall of over 70%. A high proportion of housing in the South West is occupied by retirees and a lot of properties are second homes. With high unemployment and below average wages, much of the working population are effectively priced out of the market. House builders won’t build homes that people can’t afford to buy. A more worrying statistic is the North West where the shortfall was over 60%. This is a much more populous area so the scale of the problem is amplified. The causes of the problem are complex with planning delays playing a major role, particularly in North Lancashire. However, in many ways it’s a similar situation to the South West. Cities such as Liverpool, Bolton and Manchester were hard hit by the recession 11

Advice
Pre-nups The Facts In a pre-nup, you can clearly set out before the marriage your intentions in respect of both yours, and your future spouse’s assets. Within a pre-nup you can provide clear stipulations setting out how your inherited assets, joint assets and any assets you perhaps build up during the course of the marriage, should be treated should your marriage unfortunately breakdown.
If you are planning a wedding next summer, what should you consider ahead of the big day? A pre-nup is a concept that doesn’t sit comfortably with many people. The very idea of a pre-nup is in stark contrast to the romance of finding that one person you want to share the rest of your life with. We spend our whole lives planning for and protecting our future and for the future of those around us whom we love. A pre-nup is really just another way of protecting your future but this time it provides protection against any unforeseen circumstances, which may arise. If you choose to enter into marriage then your partner will, under English Law, be entitled to a share in the ‘matrimonial assets;’ these will include any assets you own together but also any assets you may own separately and have brought into the relationship such as family inheritances, businesses, savings and investments etc. The starting point when establishing how these assets should be divided is that of equality. Just because some assets have passed down through family generations, does not automatically mean that they are excluded from the pot of matrimonial assets and/or protected from being split between you and your spouse upon divorce. Up until recently there was much sceptism as to how much weight a pre-nup would hold. Now however, the use of pre-nups is becoming much more widespread as those entering into marriage wish to protect their assets.
As with all things in law, the existence of a pre-nup does not entirely prevent one half of a couple issuing any financial proceedings at court upon separation, if they are intent on seeking further financial provision over and above that which is provided for within the pre-nup. It will then be for the Court to decide whether the terms of the pre-nup should be upheld or varied. The likelihood of the pre-nup being enforced will ultimately depend on how well it has been drafted. Specialist matrimonial solicitors will be all too aware of the various safeguards which have to be met in order for a pre-nup to hold the maximum weight possible should it ever need to be relied upon. One of these fundamental safeguards is that of ‘needs.’ It is important that, particularly in the event of a long marriage, the financial needs of both husband and wife, (upon separation), are met and that neither one should find themselves in significant financial hardship upon separation in comparison to the other. This also relates to any children born into the marriage. This is an important consideration when drafting a pre-nup and one which regularly needs to be reviewed during the course of a marriage, which is why pre-nups are often referred to as ‘living documents.’ It is not uncommon for addendums to be created during the course of the marriage to ensure that the original pre-nup reflects a fair and appropriate outcome in light of any significant changes, which may have come to fruition during the course of the marriage. Film Review
Legend Legend revisits the story of the notorious Kray twins, who ruled the East End of London in the 1960s and achieved folklore status. The narrative sees the Krays’ crime empire grow, how they use violence and intimidation to hold on to power and explores their ties with the American mafia, all set against the well documented backdrop of their complex relationship. Tom Hardy (Peaky Blinders and Lawless) excels in the characters of Ronnie and Reggie; apparently he made playing both roles a condition of taking the part. Filmed on location in the East End, Legend is narrated by Reggie’s wife, Frankie, (Emily Browning) and is presented from her viewpoint as we experience the duo’s rise to power and subsequent downfall. Directed by Brian Helgeland – writer of Oscar contenders LA Confidential and Green zone - the film begins with the gang extracting the volatile Ronnie from a mental institute. Tom hardy is convincing not just as the unhinged Ronnie but the charming and charismatic Reggie too. In the opening scenes Reggie demonstrates his power over the community and his invulnerability when he offers a cup of tea to
(18) the policemen assigned to follow him before going about his business. Through his interaction with Frankie we see Reggie’s doting side. We want to love him, but his ruthless streak and addiction to violence make it difficult. He is fundamentally flawed. The way he acts as a father figure, brother and mother to the psychotic and self-destructive Ronnie does much more to emphasise his basic humanity. Fans of violent gangster films will have plenty to get their teeth into; watch out for the prison scene (Reggie served frequent terms in jail) and the bar fight against a rival gang – this film really isn’t for the faint-hearted. The glamour and charisma of the Krays serves to mitigate the ever present violence of their lives, but ultimately this is a morality tale and viewers walk away with the message that crime doesn’t pay.

Sausage & Cider
Casserole
It goes without saying, this is a hearty really good value tasty autumn recipe which we love! It’s so easy and perfect for a supper party, served with mashed potatoes and winter savoy cabbage.
How to do it:
You will need:
Sprinkle in the flour to soak up the juices and gradually stir in the cider. Now pop the sausages back in along with the garlic, bay leaf, fresh thyme and sprigs. Add some freshly milled black pepper. As soon as it begins to simmer, pop the lid back on and transfer it to the oven for 30 minutes at 180°C, gas mark 4. Then remove the lid and let it continue to cook for a further 20–30 minutes. Towards the end of the time, fry the apple rings in butter till golden and soft and use to garnish the casserole.

Place a casserole with a tight fitting lid over a medium heat, add a little oil and, when it’s hot, brown the sausages all round – the crispier the better. Then remove onto a plate. In the remaining fat lightly fry the onions.

Advice
A house full
of pests! critters we are selectively killing the ones that are weak or least able to survive them, this makes the survivors and the surviving genes even stronger. What we end up with is a home full of pests cleverly adapted to cope with our chemical warfare.
successful as us at colonising the globe. Not only have they been great travellers but they have also managed to build up a tolerance to the popular sugar coated insecticides designed to kill them. Along with cockroaches, our homes contain tens of thousands of bacterial species, hundreds of fungi and dozens of anthropods and worms.
For a truly bioengineered and modern pest control solution, call the experts. Don’t get caught out by sophisticated spiders or clever cluster flies. Stay one step ahead with Pest Purge.
bombing the BBQ and searching out a nice cold Magners to quench their thirst. Worse still if they happen to take a serious dislike to you and actually sting you, just the ticket to spoil a summer garden party. We can come along and move them on, whoever has overstepped the mark, Pest Purge have the technology, the wit and charm to remove them safely without a fuss, keeping your event pest free. It must work; no pest that we have ever expelled has complained! We are tolerant of small disturbances but will intervene when insects get out of hand. If you have a Pest call Pest Purge (small kids excluded)!
And you thought your house was clean…. look again very closely and you will find all manner of pests lurking behind cupboards, under the kitchen sink, beneath kickboards and within the warm motors of our trusty fridge freezer. Our white goods make a perfect home for wintering mice keen to find the odd crumb and a warm bed for the night. No wonder the cat spends hours staring at the little gaps between the kitchen units! Then of course we happen to find the odd flea leaping around. Thanks Mr Cat for your fleas on my bed and sofa, a special present just for me, along with the dead squirrel you left by the back door.
One solution may be to create genetically engineered species to live with us. Even better, perhaps a geneticist crossed with an entomologist could design a custom bug to help us out around the house. Design us an insect that eats fleas, bedbugs, wasps, flies, cockroaches, rats and mice...and sucks the mould of the walls of our wet room. (Forget that it would have to be a BIG insect that we create to eat rats and mould!) But you know what I mean, let science help us get creative and prevent our pests from taking over.

What other pests lodge with us? Lice (head, body and pubic), mites that live in our eyelashes and dust mites that float around us in the sea of dead skin that covers all of us from head to toe. What do all these things have in common? As we began to settle from our nomadic origins, so the number of species living with us increased. Bed bugs joined us about 10,000 years ago and evolved longer biting mouthparts to pierce our skin and became nocturnal to avoid detection.

Do as the Romans do...
When in Rome suggests the old saying! What then to do in August, when most Romans aren’t in Rome? Join them in their “somewhere only we know” summer destination, the region of Abruzzo over on the Adriatic coast, of course. I flew to Bologna and took the Adriatic highway down the coast. It’s a few hours’ drive, so consider breaking the journey with a visit to San Marino for lunch and a stroll around the Three Towers. On arrival in Abruzzo, I headed straight for my chosen base, a former farmhouse just outside Bellante, a lovely village in the undulating hills of Teramo province in the north of the region. It was a fantastic choice, being secluded enough to relax but still perfectly located to explore this versatile area. These hills, rich in agriculture, form a barrier between the sea and the so-called backbone of Italy, the imposing Apennine Mountains. Driving inland past the city of Teramo, you enter the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park and the altitude shoots up. The park is home to the highest peak on the Italian peninsula, the 2,912m high Corno Grande, at the foot of which lies the resort of Prati di Tivo. Outside the ski season it’s popular with ramblers, hikers, climbers and mountain bikers. Driving up the winding roads, the temperature drops by 10 degrees from that on the coast and you can understand why so many locals head there with picnics and barbecues to cool down. From the village centre, the cable car takes you up to 2,007m (you can climb further on foot) but why bother when the views from there are so simply spectacular. North of Teramo lies the beautiful hilltop town of Civitella del Tronto. The fortress there, built during Spanish rule in the 16th century to guard against a French siege, is a must-see. The regional capital and cultural
centre L’Aquila, you may remember, was hit by an earthquake in 2009 and the rebuilding continues, albeit slowly (the costs are staggering). Visiting is a harrowing experience, but the determination of the locals to finish the job of restoration and the belief they show in that massive task is heart-warming. The landscapes along the way from L’Aquila to the town of Sulmona have an other- worldly character to them. The town itself is notable as the birthplace of the Roman poet, Ovid (for any classicists out there), and being the main centre of production for the original confetti, sugared almonds traditionally given as gifts at Italian weddings. The largest city and port in the region, Pescara, acts as the gateway to blue flag beaches stretching both north and south. Good luck in finding space on some of these in the summer months but the artificial reefs make for a relatively safe environment for children. For those of you not seeking la dolce vita, the coastal resorts are where you’ll find the nightlife. If you like pasta, the regional speciality (Chitarra Abruzzese) is spaghetti with tiny meatballs in a rich tomato sauce, and La Cantina del Nonno in Tortoreto Alto was very good for this. Many villages have food and wine festivals throughout the summer months, so do track some of these down (Colonnella’s definitely got a thumbs up from me). Wine is one of the main regional products (this is after all the home of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo) and the wines from Teramo province are the best of them all. If you want to push the boat out, buy a bottle (red or white) from Vini Illuminati at Controguerra. I barely heard a non-Italian accent during my trip. Many claim that a gauge of a quality Italian restaurant is the number of Italians eating there: by this token, if Abruzzo was a restaurant, it would come very highly recommended indeed. Richard Jones

300 Children
in Medway are asking for your help
Reading is a crucial skill for every child and is vital if a young person is to integrate into society and perform everyday tasks. However, one in six children across the county leaves primary school unable to read and unfortunately it is a problem that has been getting worse, not better. Literacy charity Beanstalk aims to tackle the problem at its roots and is searching for members of the community to volunteer as Reading Helpers across Kent. Reading Helpers visit a school for 90 minutes twice a week, and work 1-to-1 with three pupils for a year. The time spent with a Reading Helper differs from classroom sessions and involves reading, playing games and conversation, with a focus on having fun. For many children, this is all it takes to help build their self-esteem and give them the confidence to develop their literacy skills. Right now, Beanstalk are also looking to recruit 95 volunteers as soon as possible for Get Medway Learning, a scheme launched by Medway Council. Could you spare 90 minutes twice a week to make a difference to a child? Your community needs you. Full training and support is provided. If you have a passion for reading and can share this with a child then do please contact us. If you would like to find out more, call 01622 662026 for a chat or you can read more and apply on our website at www.beanstalkcharity.org.uk

Information
Finally, a local radio station who plays great music! This month In and Around magazine met up with internet radio station RFM – Radio For Music. RFM broadcast from a studio based in Ashford in Kent. Their promise to listeners is they are “1 minute away from the next song”. So if you’re a music lover fed up with hearing lots of chatter on the radio, this is the station for you. Derek Varney, who runs RFM told us how he provides a musical experience for the people of Kent (not forgetting listeners around the world!) who love 80’s, 90’s and the present day. I took the show to the test. The songs played were upbeat and old favourites accompanied with Derek’s great wit of everyday life thrown in between tracks. My daughter and I enjoyed the music whilst dinner was cooking and a great atmosphere filled our home with us all singing… plus it was fab to have the television off. Having previously worked for Hospital Radio Maidstone, 20 20 FM Maidstone (trial broadcast) and Ashford FM (trial broadcast) and Coastal Radio for Dover, Derek delivers a radio station all about the most important commodity, music! Local businesses have the opportunity to promote their business on the show, but we must reiterate the ads are kept short to abide the promise of being only “1 minute away from the next song”.
In order to give Derek a rest (although I think he would do a 24 hour show given half the chance!) other DJ shows include Patrick Foster, Bob Mower, Mark Carter and Tom Brooks. Those of you who love 80’s music do not want to miss the non-stop 80’s show on everyday 11am – 12pm. For 90’s music, tune in 6 – 7pm daily. For the grand finale, Sunday’s show 10am – 4pm, a 6 hour stint of non-stop 80’s and 90’s for all of us falling in the 30’s and 40’s catchment! If you’re new to internet radio, it’s sooo easy to access. Play via your tablet, pc, laptop or digital radio. In the car you can play via your smartphone (you need an internet connection of course). Why should you become a new listener? Well if we haven’t convinced you that this station is worth listening to, you need to be listening to enter their competitions with a chance to WIN £50 of iTunes vouchers!! In summary, Derek is a friendly, funny, down to earth guy with a passion for music lovers of Kent…. oh almost forgot…. if you have a celebration RFM radio will play for your party live! Simply contact RFM for a form and have your very own dedicated show…for FREE! Rfm-online.uk RFM presenters are: Tom Brooks, Patrick Foster, Bob Mower, Emily Parson, Mark Carter, Johnny Lewis, Derek Varney. 35
