Dress your windows with expertise!

Most would undoubtedly agree that sympathetically styled new windows are the best way of rejuvenating the external appearance of a property. Nothing makes the outside of a house look more dilapidated and run down than rotten windows with peeling paint. New windows also dramatically improve the interior, but on their own they may not be enough. New blinds or curtains, in a contemporary design, with bright or contrasting colours is what’s often required to imbue the ‘wow’ factor. Window blinds are available in many different materials, including timber, plastic, and painted aluminium, as well as an infinite range of luxury fabrics, many by well know designers. They are much more versatile than curtains, allowing as they do for fully open, partially open or completely closed positions, although combining curtains and blinds in a window, if the budget will permit, provides the widest number of light control options. If limiting yourself to one choice in the curtains versus blinds debate, blinds are the easy winner. Blinds come in a myriad of styles and beautiful fabrics to choose from, which together with the many different methods of operation combine to offer literally thousands of choice permutations. Choose from Venetian, Vertical, Roman, Roller,

Pleated, Perfect Fit, or any combination of these operating systems. There is always a blind that’s the perfect solution, whether its function is total blackout, as in perhaps a bedroom, discreet privacy, as maybe required in a lounge, or solar reflecting the choice of many conservatory owners. Whatever your requirements, it’s most important to get expert advice. Doing this will ensure you choose the right blind to perfectly do the job you want. Most companies offer either a home or shop service, Apollo offers both. You can view our many samples wherever suits you best, at a time that’s convenient, whether it’s weekdays, evenings or weekends. Our website, www.apollowindowblinds.co.uk is also helpful. It will provide a bounty of ideas and stimulate your imagination with its infinite variety. Let yourself be amazed! Quotes are completely free of obligation, there is absolutely no sales pressure, and window blinds will probably cost less than you think. Phone Apollo Window and Conservatory Blinds on

1 to 1 Nutritional Assessments at Zeroth

I recently met up with Jill Maynard, at Zeroth to find out about her recent qualification, an MSc, in Nutritional Sciences. Jill has worked as a Clinical Exercise Physiologist for over 10 years. She has a special interest in prescribing exercise for those with neurological conditions and also for children and adults trying to lose weight.

At your assessment data will be collected including

When I arrived at Zeroth the first thing I noticed was the friendly atmosphere with people stopping to chat with one another.

Following your initial consultation you will be given a tailor made plan by Jill according to your lifestyle, health and personal goals. You will be advised on how eating a healthy balanced diet and changing lifestyle behaviours, in order to help you achieve optimal health.

I first met Jill in August 2009 and she is a very friendly, calming and caring person. Jill told me Zeroth was the first gym of its’ kind, in the UK. The idea was inspired by her passion to help people with medical conditions, improve their quality of life. Although Jill has been delivering weight management programmes for 10 years she decided to add to her current qualifications by studying for a Master’s degree in nutritional sciences. As a result of her qualification, Jill is now offering 1 to 1 nutritional and lifestyle assessments. Whether you want to live a healthier lifestyle; need to lose weight; need advice on your diet because of diabetes or heart disease, Jill will help you get on the right track! The purpose of a nutritional assessment is to examine and evaluate an individual’s food and nutrient intake in order to establish their nutritional status. 8

CARE VISITS AT HOME

Good Old Fashioned Service ASK DEBBIE......... for help, advice and assistance Dear Debbie My elderly father lives alone and still manages to achieve a high degree of independence. He has mobility problems though and my concern is that he has become quite housebound and I think a little depressed. He only gets out when I am able to visit to take him out. Is this the kind of problem that home care can help with? Yours sincerely, Sarah

Dear Sarah A modern care agency is equipped to take a holistic approach to the well-being of a vulnerable person, dealing not only with basic needs but also seeking to improve life quality. For example, assisting with taking trips out to favourite locations. Most care agencies insist that all Care Workers taken on need to have their own transport – the costs of which are reimbursed on a per mile basis by the care agency.

DEBBIE MOULTON, CARE MANAGER OF BLUEBIRD CARE OFFERS HER ADVICE

If you have a question that you would like to ask Debbie then please email her at debbie@bluebirdcare.co.uk

Losing the ability to keep in touch with the local area and the people that live there can contribute to depression, once ageing makes people frail and vulnerable. Just getting out to the local café for a cup of tea every now and again to watch people going about their daily business can make a big difference. As long as the Care Workers own car insurance arrangements stipulate that they are covered for “business use”, a Care Worker should be able to take your father out in the car whenever he wants either to the shops, the library, the garden centre, or wherever he wishes Best Wishes, Debbie Moulton, Care Manager, Bluebird Care

How Bluebird Care can help with you or your loved ones: • Help with getting up or going to bed • Personal Hygiene • Cleaning the home • Preparing Meals • Assist with medication • Overnight Care • Washing or Ironing • Shopping • Sightseeing or leisure activities • 24hr Live-in-care • Trips to see friends or relatives

Fresh ideas to brighten up your home “I have always been a big fan of ‘Classic Contemporary’ style, which marries traditional design with a contemporary feeling and I am delighted that it seems to be back in fashion. With smart on trend fabrics covering traditionally shaped chairs and the return of antiques, which bring bags of personality to a room.

Tom Dixon: Image www.tomdixon.net

Interior Designer Phoebe Oldrey, of Smartstyle Interiors, has seen many new trends take the interior design market by storm and change the way we decorate our homes over the last decade. “In and Around Kent ” catches up with her to ask what she predicts will take our eye this year.

There is a big influence coming from the Art Deco period with people embracing a desire for a luxury with an eye for detail. However people are still price sensitive so are going with quality over quantity, which is resulting in uncluttered, sleek and smart interiors. “The dynamic of how we dress our rooms is also changing. Wallpaper has dominated recently but now it is the turn of textiles to become the star of the room. I’m really excited to see how digital printing is changing what is possible in textiles. Manufacturers now have the ability to print larger

areas so fabrics can become statement pieces. Suddenly a set of curtains can be a complete work of art using a lot more volume to give a big impact. Instead of having a feature wall we will see feature sofas and chairs, with a return to floral upholstery. For those not brave enough to take the big plunge, digital print cushions bring a real kick of colour to a room. We all love an accessory and it is a great way to finish a room and bring in your personality. For those ‘bling’ accessories, the hot metal of the moment is copper. It has a mellow warmth to it, which isn’t as harsh as chrome. Tom Dixon’s Copper Pendent light is amazing and the centrepiece of many of kitchens right now. I think this craze is opening the door to a return of gold and have recently seen a very elegant set of gold taps by Coox. I am a big believer that a space should reflect the people who live in it, without that it never truly feels like home. Use mementoes around the house but display them in unusual ways and they will bring a lot more fun to a space. Framed children’s artwork or sentimental baby clothes become great

Spring Vegetable Risotto

Risotto is a perfect store cupboard dish and once you have mastered the technique you can adapt the recipe to make it with all sorts of ingredients. SERVES: 2 PREP TIME: 10 mins COOKING TIME: 30 mins

p Cook’s titial, essen
Stirring is ou the more y m a ier stir the cre the risotto!

INGREDIENTS: • 2 dashes olive oil • 1 onion, finely chopped • 900ml stock • 1 clove garlic, crushed • Good pinch pepper • 250g mixed vegetables (e.g. leek, broccoli florettes, beans, peas) • 150g risotto rice • 1 teaspoon dried basil (or handful fresh) • 15g butter • 15g Parmigiano cheese, finely grated.

METHOD: 1. Add oil to a saucepan and cook the onion 5 minutes, until starting to brown. In a separate pan heat the stock, simmering gently. 2. Add the garlic, pepper and half the vegetables to the onion, stir 1 minute then add the rice. Stir 2 minutes, then add two ladles stock, enough to just cover the rice and stir again. 3. Regularly stirring the rice, add hot stock a little at a time so the rice is just covered. The risotto should be very gently bubbling. 4. After 15 minutes, add remaining vegetables and basil, stir another 2-5 minutes, testing the rice to make sure its cooked ‘al dente’ (slightly firm) and adding any remaining stock. 5. Finally, add the butter and cheese, stir vigorously. Serve with extra grated cheese. Extra flavour
White wine is often added for extra flavour, add a small glass after the rice has been fried, then stir until it evaporates before adding stock. Add wild mushrooms, garlic, cheese, or herbs such as basil, mint, dill, tarragon or sage. 18 inandaround

The longest day challenge

The Chequers Racers who are hoping to raise £16,438 for Pepenbury

How far can you cycle in 24 hours? How far do you think you could cycle in 24 hours? This is the challenge from a group of regulars at the Chequers Inn Pub at Laddingford, near Maidstone, who hope to raise more than £16,000 for Pemburybased charity Pepenbury through a team cycling challenge called The Longest Day. We are looking for teams to take part in this 24 hour team cycle challenge which is open to all and will take place, appropriately, on the Summer Solstice June 21. The starting point will be The Chequers Inn, Laddingford, but there is no fixed destination. However, there will be several different challenges and teams can choose their own goal. The challenges are as follows: • Furtherest distance as the crow flies. Plan, prepare and see how far away your team can get as the crow flies. • Furtherest distance in road miles Again, pretty straightforward, just put your cleats in the pedals and ride • Longest loop in road miles For those who want to turn up, do the event and get back to the start 22 inandaround

Most unusual destination You don’t have to necessarily cycle like a lunatic. You could opt for finding somewhere weird and stop

Most unusual location en route Anyone could win this. Assuming you participate, a good picture of somewhere unusual could bag you top spot

Most countries visited Photographic evidence of every country visited is expected if you are mad enough to go for this one

For the toughest riders it will be about endurance and distance. For some the biggest kudos will come from cycling the longest distance challenge. Others may want to consider the most unusual destination or the unusual location challenges. Photographic evidence of each team’s location must be provided within 24 hours of finishing the event. Each team must have four members and the event is limited to 40 teams. Entrance costs £25 per person. The Chequers have their own team of 20 plus cycling enthusiasts, the Chequers Racers who are organising the challenge. This year we are delighted they have created this new event to support Pepenbury with the aim of raising £16,438 – the amount of money we need per day to keep running our services for people with learning and other disabilities.

DIY divorce, how Mediation can help with one another and thus avoided the need for highly stressful and costly court proceedings. The result of this is also that those who engaged in mediation were able to walk away with a real sense of empowerment, as they have been able to remain in control of any decisions that may affect their future.

The Office for National Statistics latest reports showed that there were 118,140 divorces in total in 2012, which is the equivalent to 13 divorces every hour. The way couples approach divorce is also changing. DIY divorce is becoming more widely explored because many people are now looking to save money and avoid significant legal fees. Whilst a DIY divorce may be a suitable alternative to instructing solicitors, a significant number of separating couples are still faced with the more sensitive and complex issue of considering the welfare of their children and dealing with the division of the matrimonial assets and finances. A relationship breakdown can be very stressful and leave you feeling vulnerable. At Gullands, we have a team of specialist family solicitors who will work closely with you to ensure that your needs and the needs of your children are our first priority. We are also pleased to offer specialist family law mediation services to reduce the risk of the matter being taken to court which can lead to higher legal costs. Why mediate? Mediation can be used by anyone involved in a family dispute, at anytime, who wishes to attempt to resolve matters arising from the breakdown of a relationship amicably and without the need for contested court proceedings. At Gullands, we offer the very niche service of lawyer-led mediation, so you will benefit from the support and assistance of a mediator who is also a highly qualified family lawyer. We can provide you with relevant legal information and guide you in the right direction when trying to work with your former partner or family member in resolving a dispute. All of this can be achieved at a fraction of the cost, time and stress of contentious court proceedings; most cases can be agreed after 3 – 5 sessions of mediation. We also ensure that you and your former partner/ family member are given enough time to make the decisions which will ultimately be right for you and your family, without the fear of a Court Order being imposed on you. Mediation is confidential, less acrimonious and less stressful and allows separating couples a safe avenue to attempt to achieve communal goals. If you would like to know more about family mediation and whether this may be suitable for you, then contact our specialist family law team. We will run through all of the relevant information and available options with you and most importantly get you started in controlling your decisions for your future. Gail Brooks is a solicitor at Gullands and can be reached at g.brooks@gullands.com www.gullands.com or call

Ants in space! Yes really, they finally made the trip. This January 2014 saw the first ants in orbit as they join their fellow cosmonauts on the International Space Station. Based some 400,000 kilometres away they will be orbiting the earth 16 times a day, every 90 minutes. The Ants will get a fantastic view of our planet and will be able to see 16 sunrises and 16 sunsets each day! During daytime temperatures will be warm; up to 200’C and at night cooler; -200’C. They travelled on a commercial Cygnus flight and docked with the orbiting ISS. The ant farm that they are part of safely made its way to the six astronauts eagerly awaiting their arrival. Cygnus was an unpiloted craft operated by Orbital Sciences of Dulles. As well as transporting the first ants into space, Cygnus was on a resupply mission to the station. The holidaying ants are part of a science project “Ants in Space”, a school idea that will let

A look at Kent this Easter

As we begin to wake up to brighter mornings, and the promise of Spring and Summer appears on the horizon much like a flicker of light at the end of a long wintery tunnel, In and Around have a look at what to get excited for this Easter. There is plenty to look forward to this Spring time, Kent has an abundance of great Easter events and activities for all ages from National Trust and Cadbury family Easter egg trails, to local pub beer festivals. And if it is a pub event that interests you then The Chequers in Laddingford have a superb fish menu on Good Friday. Followed by an excellent annual real ale and cheese festival the weekend after Easter, where you’ll find over 25 real ales and cheeses, live music and a barbeque. With the The Chequers beer festival in its 15th year it promises to be a great weekend for all. If you were looking for a real family fun event this April, then why not throw yourselves into an Easter Quest at Leeds Castle? Event runs from the 5th 21st April, solve puzzles and collect clues on a woodland walk and be in with a chance to win a fantastic Easter prize, under 4s can join the hunt for Easter eggs without charge on the Leeds Castle pavilion lawn. Easter weekend at Brogdale Farm in Faversham is certainly something to mark in the calendar. As well as seeing what the Kent Poultry Club have to offer, you can take the opportunity to pet lambs and other animals. Explore the beautiful 30 inandaround

orchards at Brogdale Farm on the fantastic Easter trail and then browse the eclectic mix of things at the arts and crafts fair. Brogdale Farm or seasonal fun at Leeds Castle is perfect for the great outdoors family. If (like me) you are missing the pantomime fever then The Central Theatre in Chatham is probably the place to visit. After successful shows in recent years such as the Wizard of Oz and Rapunzel, Kent theatre goers obviously have high hopes for this Easter’s panto. Art Attack’s own Lloyd Warbey will be playing the boy who doesn’t grow up in Peter Pan: Easter Spectacular. Comedian Bobby Davro will be treading the boards as the theatre’s clumsiest literary pirate Smee, appearing alongside him is Tracy Beaker and Strictly Come Dancing star Dani Harmer. A pantomime truely provides something for the whole family; a lot of slapstick comedy for the kids peppered with one or two more risky one-liners for the adults. Producers of the highly anticipated Peter Pan appear keen not to disappoint theatre lovers and ensure everyone has a brilliant day at the panto. The show is only on for two days (26th - 27th April) and ticket prices seem very reasonable starting at £16.50, so booking seats early maybe best to avoid disappointment. Mark Putley

Bleed Baby Bleed the central heating to prevent more air entering the system.

If your radiators feel cold at the top and warm at the bottom, it is likely that air trapped inside them – a common problem that can be fixed quite easily by bleeding them. First, determine which radiators are affected. Switch your central heating on, and then check that each radiator is heated uniformly. Any with cold spots will need bleeding. Before bleeding, turn off

Bleed the radiator by inserting a bleed key (supplied with your radiator and available at DIY stores) in the bleed valve at the top of the radiator, whilst holding a cloth or small bowl underneath to catch any leaking water. With your hand wrapped in a cloth for protection, slowly turn the key anticlockwise until a hissing sound occurs. This is the trapped air escaping. Once the hissing stops and water starts to drip out (usually after a few seconds), close the valve back up. Repeat this process for all affected radiators. Turn the central heating back on once finished, and check your radiators after a couple of hours to ensure they have a uniform temperature, and that no water is leaking from the bleed valve. Do this once a year to keep your central heating in tip-top condition. By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Lounge on the Farm

Lounge on the Farm (LOTF), Canterbury’s bestest music festival, returns for its ninth anniversary on Saturday 2nd August at Merton Farm, Merton Lane, Canterbury, CT4 7BA. This year’s event will be the last to be held at Merton Farm, ahead of a new site being confirmed for 2015, our 10th anniversary. Farmer Tim has handed over the management on Merton Farm to his son who has decided to move away from large events and concentrate on farming. Due to these restrictions we are jam packing all the action into one day, with limited camping. But do not fear, although the festival will be that little bit more exclusive, with only 2500 tickets available, you can still expect the same chilled atmosphere, amazing acts and excellent food that Lounge is renowned for. We’ve had some great acts down at Merton Farm over the years. Big-name legends like Chic (with Nile Rogers), Echo and The Bunnymen, New York Dolls, Toots and the Maytals, The Charlatans, The Streets and Martha Reeves and the Vandellas to name but a few. We’ve also been a champion of new music with many bands who’ve played Lounge going on to big things such as The Vaccines, The xx, The Horrors, First Aid Kit, Everything Everything, Peace, Bonobo and many, many more. Lounge on the Farm has attracted thousands of festival goers from far and wide, but will continue to be a party for Kent locals and we are proud to 34 inandaround

support local business and produce. Here at HQ we are hard at work putting together a line-up that champions local talent, celebrates the stars of previous Lounges and brings a swathe of new and established artists to the rolling fields of Kent. You will not be disappointed!

“Lounge on the Farm is a unique festival that encompasses all that a festival should. With great music and up and coming artists, scrumptious food, a joyful and chilled atmosphere, and eccentric entertainment, there really is something for everyone. It’s a must try experience, and just like this year, we look forward to lounging on the farm again. See you there.” Watch out for line-up and ticket announcements here: www.loungeonthefarm.co.uk www.facebook.com/loungeonthefarm www.twitter.com/loungeonthefarm For more information please contact: Press/music bookings: Sean Baker sean@loungeonthefarm.com All other information: Victoria Hazell vic@loungeonthefarm.co.uk Ticket prices Adult - £55, Youth (13-17) - £35, Under 12s - Free Camping - £10/person. Camping is over 18 only unless in a family group. Please refer to the Terms and Conditions. Only 500 tickets available.
