Dear Readers Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday! (to the tune of Stevie Wonder, Happy Birthday). Gosh – 6 years – how time goes so fast. Through all the joy and tears I am very proud to say we have published our magazine each month, on time without fail (am I tempting fate by saying that?!). I have included my story in this issue about how the magazine started and who is behind the magazine. Please do contact me with any letters, things you want to get off your chest, I would love to include a letters page. All suggestions, contributions and moans are welcome. Last Man Stands Cricket League

Last Man Stands Cricket League launches in Kent! ‘Last Man Stands,’ the popular social cricket league is coming to Kent this summer and looking for new teams to take part. Last Man Stands, or LMS as it is commonly known, is an exciting 8-a-side Twenty 20 format, suitable for cricketers of all standards and enjoyed by more than 40,000 players across the globe. LMS games last approximately 2 hours, ideal for cricketers with time constraints who want to enjoy a fast paced game and to compete in a professionally organised league, run by people with a passion for sport. There are some great adjustments to the standard rules of cricket, such as a double play rule (two wickets off one ball) and the signatory LMS rule which allows the last batsman to take on the opposition single handedly! LMS has been hugely successful in attracting new and past players back to the game of cricket as the leagues are very accessible and open to everyone; teams don’t need their own ground or formal club structure to enter a league. All they need to do is get a group of mates together, register a team online or call the local league manager. This format is perfect for work teams looking to bond over some outdoor sport, or for 4

club mates wanting some midweek practice in a proper match situation. With increased support from the England Cricket Board and an ever-growing number of players, Last Man Stands is evolving from a niche form of the game based primarily in London to a viable, country-wide alternative to weekend cricket. The success of the game is based on its simplicity and the way in which its website provides international rankings, allowing every player and team to analyse their performances in the ultimate version of Fantasy Cricket. There is also the tantalising prospect of competing in National Finals or even the World Finals which are next set for Barbados in 2015. Matches will be held at Tunbridge Wells Borderers Cricket Club on Monday and Wednesday evenings, with a 6.30pm start time. Teams of 8 can join up together or there is the option to sign up as an individual. Mixed gender and ladies teams are also welcome, but all players must be aged 16+. The first 10 teams that register will receive half price registration of £60 which includes website profiles, eight LMS shirts, team insurance and 2 sets of executive coloured pads. After the birth of my daughter Charlotte in October 2007 I needed to return to work to bring some money into the home (and to exercise my overactive brain!). There was no way I could return to my previous career as an Account and Project Manager as it entailed long hours and inconsistent meetings of which I had to attend across the UK. This was no good for childcare. I looked at part time jobs but of course once I calculated what I would earn after childcare costs it just didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t seem worth it.

So...

I decided to start a community magazine! (Believe me there have been moments where this was a great idea coupled with moments of what a crazy idea this was whilst being a mum!). And thus, the first issue was born in June 2008. Here is how it looked back then. With a passion for business, design, community life and constantly looking at ways to improve the magazine, over the years I managed to change the look of the magazine and increase the distribution. One of the best parts about my job is hearing local businesses tell me they are receiving work from appearing in the magazine and local residents reporting they enjoy receiving it too. Choose the Right Garden Furniture

Having the right garden furniture can really enhance the hours we spend in our gardens in the Summer. To help you decide what you need, consider how you will spend most of your time outdoors. Will it be daily alfresco dining with the family, weekend barbecues with family and friends, or just you relaxing in the sunshine with a good book? Knowing the function of your furniture can help you decide whether reclining padded beds, a sophisticated dining table and chairs, or relaxed informal seating is what you need. Of course it may be a mixture of all of the above, in which case you will need to look for versatile combinations. The amount of space you have available should also be taken into account. You might drool over a fantastic sofa with matching arm chairs in a catalogue, but do you really have the space to accommodate it successfully, or would smaller fold-away seats be more suitable? In addition to your outdoor space, think about where you will store your furniture in Winter. Whilst vinyl covers can protect your furniture from Summer showers, it really is best kept in a shed or garage during the worst weather. This is where fold-away pieces can be incredibly practical, or in some cases, you may be able to take pieces apart for storage too. 8

When considering the material of your furniture, consider durability and maintenance as well as appearance. Wooden furniture is popular and versatile, but needs regular weatherproofing. Metal items require less maintenance, but have the disadvantage of being hot to touch in the sun. Some colours of plastic furniture also become hot, and plastic may become brittle if left outside in all weathers. Wicker and rattan pieces will need greater protection from the wet and are more easily damaged. Cost of course will also be a factor. Plastic items are usually the cheapest, but it is generally true that you get what you pay for in terms of longevity. Several materials offer a variety of colour choices. Remember though that white and silver reflect the light so can be uncomfortable to look at in the glaring sun, and black absorbs the heat so can become very hot. The safest colours are therefore mid-greens, greys or natural wood. Many prefer muted tones, adding style and personality through bright cushions and tablecloths. Whatever you choose, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go on appearance alone. The most stylish items wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get used if they are incredibly uncomfortable. So do try out your intended purchases in-store to ensure they will help you to enjoy the outdoors, and not leave you fidgety or stiff. By Susan Brookes-Morris

The Paleo Diet – is it any good?

Apparently the ‘A’ listers’ favourite diet, the paleo diet is a concept based on the hunter-gatherer way our ancestors would have sourced and prepared food, think and eat like a caveman (or woman)! It does have some excellent points but how realistic is it to follow? The guidelines are below:Avoid - all dairy, all grains (bread, pasta, rice etc), all pulses/beans/lentils, peanuts, alcohol, sugar, processed foods and drinks of any kind including artificial sweeteners. Eat in Moderation -whole fruit, nuts and seeds, starchy vegetables Enjoy - all meat from organic sources, organic eggs, wild fish, vegetables, fermented foods, natural fats, olives, coconut and avocado’s My main concern about this diet is that it is incredibly hard to do in today’s society and eating out would be almost impossible. Foods like pulses, beans and wholegrain foods can provide an

excellent source of B-vitamins and minerals. Eating a high protein diet has been shown to increase the risk of serious disease such as heart disease and bowel cancer. However, increasing your intake of vegetables and foods containing the essential fats is to be encouraged as much as possible, Last year I saw a client who had been following the paleo diet for a number of months. He had symptoms including tremors, concentration problems, memory loss and low energy. The problem he had was insufficient carbohydrate intake which had affected his magnesium and B-vitamin levels and of course, his sugar intake. If you want to improve your diet I would suggest increasing your intake of good fats, fruits, vegetables and fish. Keep dairy and wheat intake low and swap any ‘white’ carbs for wholegrain foods. Limit your consumption of caffeine and alcohol and drink plenty of water. If you do this for 6 days out of 7, then you can still go out for a meal and enjoy whatever you fancy! Julie Clark

Sweet Feet For Summer

Some polishes have nourishing qualities. We’ve kept them hidden in shoes and boots all Winter, but when Summer comes it’s good to put on a pair of sandals or flip flops, or perhaps even walk around with bare feet. So, how can we make sure our feet are in tip-top condition and feel confident about showing them off to all around us? If you have a lot of rough and hard skin, foot conditions such as athletes foot, fungal nail infection, an ingrowing toe nail, calluses, corns or verrucas, a session or a number of appointments with a chiropodist or podiatrist is recommended. The terms are interchangeable, but strictly in the UK, ‘Podiatrist’ is a reserved title meaning that it 14 inandaround

can only be used by those registered with the Health Professions Council. Inside the profession, chiropody is used to suggest the routine processes of foot care, whilst podiatry is indicative of the higher skills and academic levels. Once any medical issues have been eliminated, you may wish to keep up the look and condition of your feet through pampering at home, or a trip to the beautician for a pedicure.

Regular maintenance tasks should include: • Cutting your toe nails short. The use of clippers is generally recommended. Nails should be no more than a couple of millimetres over the edge of your toe. • Next, file your nails using an emery board. File them so they are smooth, neat and square. • It’s good to soak your feet in a bowl of warm water and use a foot scrub or lotion to get them clean and feeling smooth and silky. • Various tools and devices are available to help you file hard and crusty skin to make it smooth. At home and at a beautician’s this is likely to be a pum ice based product. A chiropodist is more likely to use a blade. • Apply moisturising cream daily and massage it in well, including between the toes. Let it dry before putting on socks or tights, as persisting dampness can cause fungus or athletes foot. • Once a week, gently push back your cuticles with a cuticle stick to keep your toes healthy.

If you want to beautify too,

you can apply polish to your toe nails. Some polishes have nourishing qualities. Make sure you remove traces of any previous polish with an appropriate remover. Toe separators can make the job of applying polish easier.

Ongoing measures for foot health

Crazy ants

Crazy ants use acid venom as an antidoteâ&#x20AC;Ś Kent ants are non-venomous and easy to get rid of! Just when you thought it was safe to sit on the grass along come some crazy ants! The xenomorphs that dripped acid for blood in the film Alien have nothing on tawny crazy ants. These ants are mad as a hatter; they even attack fire ants (even though fire ant venom can kill small animals).

Tawny crazy ants have a nifty way to detox from a fight with a fire ant; an acid bath. When the fire ants attack them with their venom, they run off and like a cat cleaning its fur and wash themselves with their own acid venom. Scientists found that a dab of this acid saved these fearsome ants, which normally succumb to the fire ant venom. The acid may neutralise the potent enzymes in the venom. Fire ants are a major pest in the USA and South America , but tawny crazy ants are no better, often invading homes and living spaces. Luckily in Kent and the south of England we only have a few species of harmless ants, black, red and pharaoh ants are usually the culprits upsetting someone. Declarations of Trust If you do wish to own in this way, a Declaration of Trust is an excellent way of setting out clearly the differing ownership shares of the parties. Information can be provided which ring fences one party’s existing equity in the home, or establishes the percentages which each party holds in the property.

Most homes are owned in the joint names of the two adults that live there, but the mere fact that the property is legally owned in two names, does not automatically demonstrate the true ownership intentions. Many people will be familiar with the concepts of Joint Tenants and Tenants in Common. With Joint Tenants, the property is owned together, as a unit, there is no reference to individual shares or percentages. If anything happens to one of the owners, the other one, through the principle of Survivorship, will automatically own the whole of the house, no inheritance tax, no probate required. For many couples, this accurately reflects the way they wish to hold the property. However, in our ever more complex lives, this method does not always reflect the background to the purchase. For example, an older couple bringing different amounts of deposit monies with them, a property being transferred into the joint names of existing owner and new partner, a young couple where one set of parents are “gifting” the deposit to their child, a house being purchased jointly by a number of adults – all situations where owning as Tenants in Common may be more appropriate. 20 inandaround

For example, an older couple decide to sell their existing homes in their sole names and purchase a property together, one has equity of £25,000, one of £50,000. The Declaration of Trust can demonstrate that when the property is eventually sold they both get back their initial investment and share equally, or otherwise, the remaining equity. Other information can be added, for example, how any mortgage is to be paid, who is responsible for upkeep and insurance etc. When owning property as Tenants in Common, a Will is vital, as the principle of Survivorship will not apply and the parties will not automatically inherit their partner’s share. Equally, the share can be left to a third party, for example the children of a previous marriage. The creation of a Declaration of Trust when purchasing the property allows the parties to avoid difficulties later on, if the relationship breaks down. This means that ownership can begin with all parties clear on their respective interests and duties as householders together. Fathers’ Day

Most dads will receive a Fathers’ Day card on June 15th, but how many of them know just how important their role in the family is? Scientists are increasingly realizing just how much dads matter. Kids who feel loved by their father tend to have a greater sense of well-being, happiness and life satisfaction, than those who feel loved by their mother alone. Dads may also be responsible for endowing their child with the “stick-with-it-ness” that will serve them well throughout their life. University researchers found that a dad’s parenting style is more closely linked to whether teens will exhibit

persistence than mum’s parenting. A persistent personality, in turn, was related to less delinquency and more engagement in school over time. Fathers who are most effective at this are those who listen to their children, have a close relationship, set appropriate rules, but also grant appropriate freedoms. Quality time with dad is really important too. It doesn’t have to be an expensive holiday or day trip - simply playing ball in the back garden or watching a film together is fine. What’s important is that dad is there and fully engaged. So dads, why not use this Fathers’ day to get out, take the kids to the park and just enjoy being with your family. By Sarah Davey

The two are just a few hundred yards apart, one a delightful country cottage garden, the other an extremely pretty part-terraced garden and between them they offer a magnificent selection of herbaceous perennials, annuals, shrubs, roses and climbers, with the picture completed by kitchen gardens, cutting gardens, wildflower meadows, wildlife ponds and orchard areas. And as if that wasn’t enough, there is also an Animal Corner with goats, ponies, chickens, ducks and geese, and plenty of country stalls, including a plant nursery, crafts, cards, books, garden furniture, bric-a-brac, and a raffle. And when you’re ready to take a bit of a break, there will be cream teas, homemade cakes, and ice creams available. One of the organisers, Fiona Chapman, says: “This is the fifth year that we have opened up our gardens, and we love it. We enjoy meeting new 28 inandaround

people and it’s our way of raising money for a wonderful cause and sharing our passion for gardening and country life.” Entry is by donation, with all the money raised going to help Macmillan and its vital work for people affected by cancer. This recipe is a great way to use up your last few apples or any other fruit you have. You can use bread instead of brioche. SERVES: 4 COOKING TIME: 30 mins INGREDIENTS: • 100g butter • B6 Granny Smith apples peeled, cored, quartered and thickly sliced • 100g cinnamon sugar • 50ml rum or brandy (optional) • 3 large eggs • 50ml milk • ½ tsp vanilla extract • 4 thick slices brioche • 4 tbsp Greek-style yogurt to serve

cook over a high heat for 8-10 minutes, until caramelised. Add a splash of rum or brandy, if using, bubble for 1 minute and set aside. • Whisk together the eggs, milk, 1 tbsp of the sugar and the vanilla extract. • Dip in the brioche to coat thoroughly and allow the mixture to soak in a little. •

Melt the remaining butter in a large frying pan, and fry the brioche in batches over a medium heat for 2-3 minutes each side. Remove, sprinkle with the remaining sugar, cut into triangles and put on 4 plates.

Garden View - How low can you grow

Mention the word ‘alpine’ to a garden designer and (in general) you’ll be given the same facial expression as a child who’s just bitten into an unwaxed lemon! Insignificant leaf growth with tiny flowers … what’s to love? Associated with badly designed 60’s rockeries, these low growing perennials really do get a raw deal. In the main, the poor little things can’t climb very far, can’t extend their roots to escape from water logged soil, and have not adapted to elongating their stems to reach the sunlight (because a naughty gardener planted the pot-bought specimen under the shade of a tree). Alpines, like other successful species, have adapted themselves to their native habitats, often found clung to the side of a windy rock face way above sea level. When you observe them in the wild, you easily understand why they are so small. The exposed sites would quickly dry out large leaves, so many are small in size such as those of Hypericum olympicum, and others often silver in colour such as the very cute Artemisia schmidtiana ‘Nana’. Rather a mouthful to say and often not the most romantic sounding names either, take Pulsatilla vulgaris (the pasque flower) as an example. It might not win any prizes in the largest plant competition, but its ability to grow on nearly solid limestone rock is pretty impressive. So too are its beautiful flowers, delicate dissected foliage and crazy seed heads.

Until I saw a glasshouse full of alpine plants all in bloom at the same time I wasn’t a huge fan either, but seeing them up close and personal when displayed at waist height, you realise how wonderful these tiny creations are. Over recent years, alpines have really been appreciated for their versatility and employed in new applications. Take the humble Sempervivum ‘Othello’, famous for thriving on hot dry tiled roofs and now widely used on green roof schemes where it can adapt to the very shallow free draining soils. It’s quite a vigorous semp., with beautiful red tints in winter. Grow in shallow containers in full sun where it will quickly spread to around 30cm in width. If you are looking for a plant to cover an old dry stonewall or soften the corner of a raised bed, look no further than Campanula poscharskyana ‘Stella’. If happy, it does have a tendency to walk, but with its long flowering season and pretty purple flowers I’m sure your neighbours won’t mind if it starts appearing in their crevices too. June is a busy month in the garden, and as well as a good time to plant alpines, other jobs include: • Sowing salad leaves every 2 weeks for a continuous crop • Plant grasses • Tie up climbers • Earth up potatoes Until next time, happy gardening. Children from the poorest UK families are 13 times more at risk, and are also more likely to be admitted to hospital with accidental injuries. Child Safety Week runs from 23rd – 29th June and is organised by The Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT). They stress that although the number of children killed in accidents is shrinking due to ever-improving emergency medical care, near-fatal accidents can leave lifelong mental as well as physical scars, and put families through hell. CAPT run awareness campaigns to explain how most accidents can be easily prevented. Parents often misunderstand the dangers their children face daily. For example, a child is hundreds of times more likely to be killed crossing a road than by a predatory kidnapper. But the media focus on paedophile scare-stories, so parents over-estimate the risk of stranger danger and underestimate the risks involved in more mundane scenarios. To put it in perspective, fewer than eight children per year are murdered in the UK, whereas nearly 400 are killed in household or traffic accidents. As mornings can be a particularly stressful and accident-prone time, for this year’s campaign CAPT have enlisted the help of the Safety Superheroes, who will do battle with the villainous Morning Mayhem! Watch out for them in events this June.

Here are three top tips to keep your kids safe! Make sure they STOP, LOOK, and LISTEN when crossing the road on the way to school (and again on their way home). Teach your kids about burn and scald risks: Don’t overfill the kettle, never use a knife to fish toast out of the toaster, take care with hair-straighteners, and always turn them off after use.
