Business Talk – Learn from your Mistakes

Owner of MBK Studio, Stewart Woodruff echoes Bill Gates sentiment “your most unhappy customers are your greatest source of learning” From a very early age, we were continually advised by our peers that we must learn from our mistakes. We soon find that making mistakes can cause us upset, so we try to avoid them. It’s all part of growing up, with sayings like ‘you won’t do that again in a hurry’ and ‘once bitten twice shy’ acting as early lessons in life. However, we don’t seem to carry forward these life lessons when we embark into business. In order for all retailers to provide the best possible service to all their clients they must learn from every one of their customers and every transaction that takes place. All our customers provide us with valuable insights about our business, good and bad. When you complete the sales process with a customer and everything went well you need to clone the whole process, so that you can do it again and again. However, when the process fails you have to find out why it failed, at what stage and you have to amend your process to ensure it doesn’t happen again. That’s when you learn the most and this is where learning from your mistakes becomes crucial. Recognising which customers are going to benefit your business is one of the most important lessons you will ever learn. However there are some customers who you will not be able help and will not benefit from your service and it is important that you realise this and advise them as quickly as possible. Remember that you will never please everyone and so choose carefully. 4

inandaround

But there are clients who really will blossom if you are attentive and make sure that you do everything possible to engage with them and make their purchasing experience as enjoyable as possible. Customers, who you have a clear understanding of their requirements and who trust you, benefit from the extra effort. Their problems are easily solved and they are good for your business. By far the easiest way to help your customers is by always asking the right smart questions which will illicit the right answers and enable you to ensure that you provide your customer with exactly what they require. However you will not have a business without sales, regardless what industry you are in so ensure that you know exactly who your market is and direct your advertising to that market, providing them with a message that will compel them to visit your business and if you have clearly identified your market and where they shop then most of your customers will arrive having realised that you are the only business they want to deal with making your job a whole lot easier. Positioning your business as the only business in your industry that customers should buy from is critical to the survival of any business.

CARE VISITS AT HOME

Good Old Fashioned Service ASK DEBBIE......... for help, advice and assistance Dear Debbie My sister and I are the main carers for our elderly mother who lives alone a few miles away from both of us. She has always been a fiercely independent lady and has loved her home where she has lived for 40 years. It’s where her main memories of husband and family lie. After a few years of increasing confusion, she has now received a dementia diagnosis, apparently in early stage. We are both very reluctant to put her into a care home. Can home care help in this situation? Yours sincerely, Pauline S

Dear Pauline The question for you and your sister is “what course of action will be in your mother’s best interest?” Home care can work very well for some people especially where there are strong local relationships, say with neighbours or church groups because they can remain in contact with what is familiar to them. This often provides valuable reassurance in a situation which causes very real stress to those affected and their families.

DEBBIE MOULTON, CARE MANAGER OF BLUEBIRD CARE OFFERS HER ADVICE

If you have a question that you would like to ask Debbie then please email her at debbie@bluebirdcare.co.uk

Regular visits from skilled carers can check regularly on well-being and safety, ensure adequate food intake and nutrition and ensure that medication is taken at the appropriate times. As the condition develops, regular contact with familiar faces offers reassurance, especially when the carers are trained in basic dementia coping strategies. You and your sister will obviously want to be at the heart of the care arrangements but carefully coordinated home care visits can help share the burden. Best Wishes, Debbie Moulton, Care Manager, Bluebird Care

How Bluebird Care can help with you or your loved ones: • Help with getting up or going to bed • Personal Hygiene • Cleaning the home • Preparing Meals • Assist with medication • Overnight Care • Washing or Ironing • Shopping • Sightseeing or leisure activities • 24hr Live-in-care • Trips to see friends or relatives

Allington Belle Self Drive Boat Hire Review iver from “You’ll see the r spective” a different per

My family and I had the great pleasure of taking out one of Allington Belle’s self drive boats. Until now I didn’t realise you could even hire self drive boats in Maidstone! It turned out my family didn’t know either – so please do spread the word. Allington Belle boat hire is situated off Newbury Avenue which is the turning past Waitrose at Mid Kent Shopping Centre. We followed the road until we arrived at a small archway, so small in fact we wondered if we were supposed to drive through it! Turning into the lane we went down a hill all wondering if we had taken the right turning and then after only a few seconds arrived at the boat yard. Foords Wharf boat yard is like being in a little oasis, so quiet and peaceful, surrounded by nature and trees away from the hustle and bustle of Maidstone town centre.

10 inandaround

Bev greeted us and took us to a little wooden hut where she fitted buoyancy aides to the children. She showed us a map of the river and how far you can travel in 2 hours, half a day (4 hours) or a full day (8 hours). In 2 hours we could sail through the town centre and reach East Farleigh Lock, and then turn around. If you go for a half day you can sail to Teston Country Park or a full day will take you to Yalding and back. Prices are very reasonable starting from £45 for 2 hours hire (Else Belle) and vary depending on which size boat you choose. If the weather turns bad you are able to cancel your booking with no charge you just need to call Bev by 9am.

the river It was so peaceful on , relaxed and we all felt calm and tranquil. We were fortunate to take out Maidstone Belle, one of their silent picnic boats that seats up to 10 people. For half a day hire this costs £150 (only £15/person!) or a full day is £220 (I’m sure you can do the maths on this one). They are really easy to drive with just a forward and reverse leaver – much to my husband’s relief (I had to look after our children of course). Once on the boat everyone was having a good look around; a gas hob, running water, cups, plates and cutlery even a toilet. The children thought it was great having a toilet on a boat! You could sit outside of the boat at the front and rear and the middle was undercover with soft comfy seating. We all opted to sit outside as it was a sunny afternoon. Steve and Henry showed us how to steer and control the boat and we were on our way. As we departed Bev shouted out “you’ll see the river from a different perspective” and she was right. We all felt like we weren’t in Maidstone at all. It was so peaceful on the river and we all felt calm, relaxed and tranquil. As we sailed along we were all guessing where we were as you could see how lucky some of our residents are that have a big garden that backs onto the river. “This must be Tovil” my husband said, “No, it’s the back of College Road” my mum would say. Beautiful green trees lead the way through the town centre and towards East Farleigh Lock with my husband physicing himself up for the U turn back to boat yard. Another thing I noticed “down on the river” was how friendly everyone was. Every person we passed be it on a boat or sitting on the river bank all waved and said hello. Much different from the hustle and bustle of the town where no-one’s eyes meet and people appear less friendly. We didn’t have the time to stop off for a picnic this time but all agreed what a lovely day out it would make and we will definitely return to Allington Belle boat hire to arrange our memorable family day out.

Home Improvements – Bathrooms for a better Lifestyle The Mail on Sunday reported that ‘the best good home improvements don’t just add value of your property – you get to enjoy their benefits every day as well’. With that in mind MBK try to make every Home improvement they are involved in an investment for the client. There will always be occasions when the client’s circumstances require that the improvement is made because of a change on their circumstances; however even then the design and installation should be of such a quality that investment is not financial but in a better lifestyle. However the finished project should always be of a standard that any future purchaser would not view it as too personal and would find it fully acceptable.

One of the most popular bathroom projects in the last three years is the installation of a good shower, either replacing a bath with an enclosure or a shower bath. Clients are finding either that actually using their existing bath uncomfortable and therefore they require an easier access shower facility, or they require a god shower in their bathroom but wish to retain the bath facility and so opt for the new range of P shaped shower baths. Dependant on the clients requirements this can either be a complete rip out and new installation or a partial renovation using shower panels to create the shower enclosure. So whatever you require we will always be here to help and advise you.

Your very own IT help desk on your doorstep!

In & Around magazine went to see Bearsted Computer Solutions to find out more about their services and experience. As you may be aware the small independent computer shops are now long gone in place of big retailers. At Bearsted Computer Solutions you will be greeted by Stuart and Mick who between them have over 40 years of experience in I.T! (Sorry guys, showing your age now!). They have been at the shop at The Parade by Bearsted Green for 9 years and not only offer services to repair computers but you can also buy computers and all IT consumables there too.

They offer great deals on computers (don’t be fooled in thinking that their prices will be more than the big retailers as they have excellent computers at great prices). If you are having problems with your computer, Stuart and Mick provide a full health check, virus removal and anti-spyware. This costs just £55 with 98% of computers being fixed and returned in good working order. (if they didn’t think it would repair from a health check you would be advised beforehand). If you purchase a new computer, Stuart and Mick will configure the computer for you so it is all ready for collection (this can take a few hours or more depending on your IT skills!). They offer an advice help desk and it is so good to be able to talk to a person and not a recorded message!

Holiday Contact contact to text or email and only about issues concerning the children. If necessary consult your solicitor before difficulties get out of hand. Avoid using the children to pass messages. When it comes to organising the summer and other school holidays, the more notice that can be given the better. Leaving it to June/July to sort out the summer holiday contact is likely to result in arguments and expensive last minute holidays. Both parents may have childcare issues to sort out.

As the summer holidays approach, I am likely to see an increase in approaches from existing and new clients about how to resolve issues over holiday contact arrangements for children. In April this year, a significant change took place with regard to the way that disputes over children issues are resolved. Amendment to the law resulted in us now making Child Arrangements Orders, sweeping away the old regime of Residence and Contact Orders. Under the previous arrangement, the parent with main care could have obtained a Residence Order perhaps with defined Contact granted to the absent parent. Now we have an Order covering the living and contact arrangements. However, as before, the Courts do not want to make Orders concerning Children. They want parents to resolve issues themselves. As part of this there is now much greater emphasis on parents attending mediation before proceedings can even be issued. As solicitors we have an obligation to make sure all attempts have been made to resolve the issue before considering court involvement. That being the case, what can parents do themselves to avoid having to involve solicitors at all? The first thing is to try to ensure the lines of communication are open. It is not always easy to speak to an estranged partner, when a relationship breaks down feelings will run high but at the middle of this will be the children of the family and parents owe it to them to try to minimise the impact of the split. If the parties are finding it hard to communicate, try to find a neutral third party to pass messages, or limit 20 inandaround

What about taking the child out of the country? If there is a Residence Order or Child Arrangement Order establishing with whom the child will live, that parent does not need to seek the permission of the other parent to take the child out of the country for up to 28 days. However, for the vast majority of cases, where there is no order, consent should be sought, but there would need to be good reasons for it to be withheld. Parents should provide each other with details, in good time, of flights and addresses whilst away. The party with whom the child lives should hold the passport, but should make it available in good time to the other parent, who should return it promptly after the holiday. If it is not possible to agree holiday contact, legal advice should be sought and mediation attempted. Taking the children out of the country for a longer period is a very different matter and advice should be sought early on if that is a possibility. As can be seen, whilst there are legal provisions governing the care of children after separation, the emphasis is on the parents acting in the best interests of their child and caring for the child without the involvement of the law. It is not easy, and there will inevitably be a few issues, but ultimately doing what is best for your child, and remembering that you are both responsible for the children’s welfare and happiness should help to avoid major difficulties arising. Walking Back to Happiness

Health experts recommend that we get 30 minutes of moderate physical activity five times a week. To achieve this, look no further than something you’ve been doing since you were a toddler - walking! Walking has been described as “the nearest activity to perfect exercise” and offers a host of health benefits, including a reduction in the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, colon and breast cancer, Alzheimer’s and stroke. In addition, walking conditions all the muscles of the lower body, particularly those in the bottom and thighs, and US psychologists also claim that regularly spending time outdoors can help stave off anxiety and depression. Walking can, quite literally, be done anywhere but if tramping the streets or countryside alone is not your idea of fun, why not join a walking group near you? They are a great way to make new friends and meet like-minded people in a sociable and safe environment. The Ramblers is Britain’s walking charity, with around 500 groups throughout the British Isles. Most groups are organised geographically, but there are some that specialise in shorter, easier, or family-friendly walks, and others that cater for specific age groups - for example people in their 20s, 30s or 40s. Walks are run weekly and are generally led by a trained leader. The cost of annual membership is £32 or £3 per month. The British Walking Federation organises walking events for people of all ages and abilities, to encourage personal fitness through regular non-competitive exercise. To participate, simply turn up and register on the day. A list of events can be found on their website www.bwf-ivv.org.uk along with a list of walking groups around the country. The British Walking Federation offers individual membership at £8 per year, which entitles members to a calendar of events, newsletters and discounts on entry fees to permanent BWF trails.

If you like walking but fancy something a little different, why not give Nordic Walking a try? Originally designed to help cross-country skiers train during the summer months, this method of walking is suitable for all ages, experience and fitness levels, and involves the use of specially designed poles to give you a full body work out that tones the arms, legs, stomach, chest and back, in addition to the legs. Using the poles puts less pressure on the joints as the work is shared between different parts of the body. The only equipment needed to start Nordic Walking is a good pair of shoes and comfortable clothing. Poles are provided within the class fee price of £5-£6 for around an hour.
