Speaking of which, I hear so many stories of woman who have problems with their employer when it comes to returning to work after having children. I am certain that if men had children the same as women the working world would be a different place. Of course, I understand the priorities and importance of business, but most of us still need to work. We hope each of you find something from this issue. Our focus for the magazine is always “everyday life with a local spin”.

oose Community Considers Development Threat

Loose is recognised as one of the best places in Maidstone to live. Neighbouring development plans have left the Parish Council with a dilemma: how can they safeguard the future of this loved semi-rural community when all around there are potential planning developments up to its borders, and threats to eat away at its green spaces and views. The Parish Council is now urging all those who live, work or own land in the area to come together and consider how they can preserve the essence of Loose while ensuring that it remains a vibrant, sustainable location – fit for the challenges of the next two decades.

“People move to Loose for the lifestyle it offers,” said Jim Andrew, Chairman of the Steering Group. “If we want to maintain and enhance that lifestyle, not just for us but for future generations, we have to ascertain what our needs are and embody them in the Plan. This Plan gives us the chance to do exactly that. If we don’t take this opportunity, we’ll get what we’re given,” he said. “We’re not asking people to write the Plan – but they do need to come along and tell us what they’d like us to include. And, if they want to get more involved – we’d encourage them!” The 10 September evening is all about opinions. Then there will be three-day Design Forum in October for Loose people to consider all the opinions given and work them into a viable draft concept plan. Details of all events can be found below.

To do this a Parish Council Steering Group is leading the process to develop a Neighbourhood Plan. Once agreed, by local referendum, the Plan must be taken into account in all future planning and conservation decisions for up to 20 years. It will have statutory force.

For more information on the challenges being faced by Loose and the Neighbourhood Plan process, please contact H Hunt, Secretary of Loose Parish Council Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group on 07944-056225 or email looseneighbourhoodplansec@gmail.com.

Loose residents, land and business owners have a major opportunity to share their thoughts on the future of Loose at a “Loose Visioning” evening in the King George V Pavilion between 7.30 and 10pm on Wednesday 10th September. The event will be led by an independent planning and design consultancy to help ensure the plan reflects the views of the local people.

Gas Safety Week 15th - 21st September

Samsian Ltd has pledged its support for Gas Safety Week (15-21 September), and will be discounting its rates for boiler servicing during Gas Safety Week & raising awareness of gas safety issues. This fourth annual Gas Safety Week will see the whole industry coming together to bring gas safety to the forefront of people’s minds. Dangerous gas work can kill, so it is vital that gas appliances are safety checked at least once a year. If left unchecked, poorly serviced gas appliances can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. In the last year alone, 343 people were injured and 10 people died as a result of gas related incidents. People can sign up to a free reminder service at www. StayGasSafe.co.uk, and use the interactive gas map to see how many unsafe gas appliances are lurking in an area. Danny Tickner, Founder & Director at Samsian Ltd said: “ We’re pleased to support Gas Safety Week 2014. Gas Safety is a serious issue & in Britain, our level of gas safety is impeccable. Special events being held all over the country during the gas safety week 15th – 21st September 2014 will help raise awareness & ensure we remain a world leader”

gas fire. Sign up at www.staygassafe.co.uk for a free reminder service.
 • Check the front and back of your engineer’s Gas Safe Register ID card, making sure they are qualified to do the specific type of gas work you require.
• Install an audible carbon monoxide alarm which will alert you if dangerous levels are present in your home.
 • Check for warning signs your appliances aren’t working correctly, such as lazy yellow or orange flames instead of crisp blue ones, black marks on or around the appliance and too much condensation in the room. For more information call Samsian Ltd now on 01732 885882 for more information on Domestic or Commercial Gas Safety in the Kent Area. Alternatively visit www. GasSafeRegister.co.uk or call 0800 408 5500 to find a Gas Safe Registered engineer that covers your area.

Russell Krämer, chief executive for Gas Safe Register, said: “Every year, far too many people suffer from preventable gas related accidents, such as gas leaks, explosions, fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. It’s great therefore, that Samsian Ltd has pledged its support and is raising awareness of gas safety issues, helping to let the 23 million gas consumers in the UK know about the simple checks they can make to stay safe.” Follow these simple checks to stay gas safe: • Always use a Gas Safe registered engineer when having gas work carried out in your home. You can find a registered engineer in your area by calling Gas Safe Register on 0800 408 5500 or visit www. GasSafeRegister.co.uk • Get your gas appliances safety checked at least once a year and serviced in line with the manufacturer’s instructions. This includes your gas boiler, gas cooker and

Ways to check you are using a qualified plumber qualifications and experience before they allow them to go on the register. They will check genuine training too - such as City & Guilds certificates. The more qualified the plumber is the higher their ranking will be on the list i.e. an associate or a full member. It really is important to be aware of these two main industry bodies and use them to source qualified, local tradesmen.

If you want to be sure you are using a qualified plumber or gas safe installer you can check this by using the gas safe register and the CIPHE register (chartered institute of plumbing and heating engineers). Anyone touching gas MUST be on the gas safe register. It is illegal to touch gas without having completed the correct training and without being on this register. You can go to their website and very easily enter your postcode and quickly bring up a list of registered installers in your area. Alternatively, you can search an individual’s name or a company name that state they are on the register. Once you have brought them up you can then check further by seeing which elements of gas they are permitted to work with. To locate a good, genuine and qualified plumber you can use the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineers register. You can’t ‘just’ join this list. The CIPHE check and vet all their plumber’s

It has been reported that many tradesmen use these logos in their adverts but are not on the list. The way round checking this is to go direct to the main industry bodies and view the members for yourself on line. Gas safe regularly train and communicate with their engineers. They notify them of changes in the industry, and keep them abreast of changing industry standards, and as such their listing is always up to date. Gas Safe Engineers re-train every three years to keep up to date, and this is what helps to keeps you safe. So always make sure you are using a registered installer. British Food Fortnight . . .

20th September – 5th October Name a British dish. Roast beef and Yorkshire pudding? Shepherds’ pie? Spotted dick? Now ask your child to name a traditional British dish. Can they? In recent years we have become a multi-cultural society and we’ve happily adopted pasta from Italy, curry, from India and noodles from China. While we should be proud of the fact that we’ve welcomed and assimilated these new tastes, we seem to be in danger of forgetting or ignoring our own national and regional dishes. It’s a sad fact that many British school children (and almost as many adults)have little or no knowledge of our culinary heritage in spite of it being rich and varied. British Food Fortnight exists to put British food firmly in the spotlight. It aims to encourage us to enjoy fresh, seasonal produce and regional dishes. To this end it takes place during harvest time, which is the traditional time for celebrating food. This year it also has the additional aim of helping our children to discover all that’s wonderful about British food. The theme is Bringing Home the Harvest. Many schools are participating with the aim of teaching children how to prepare simple meals from fresh, seasonal ingredients. High street shops, farm shops and delicatessens will also be joining in, stocking British produce and running tasting sessions and cookery demonstrations. There will be special events in care homes for the elderly, scrumptious servings of British food in garden centre cafes, patriotic menus in hospitals, family feasts in children’s centres and lots of fun food and drink festivals and country fairs. With global warming rarely out of the news these days it’s reassuring to know that buying locally farmed, seasonal produce is the most eco-friendly choice too. It’s comforting to know that by buying British we’re doing our bit to save the planet.

Schoolthe Make Open most Days of school . . . open days to individuals may be small. Other schools plan programmes with lots of opportunities to speak to staff and pupils. Plan ahead and make sure you: 1. Take your child with you so they can help notice things you may not see. 2. Think about how you felt at the open day – was it friendly, efficient. 3. Look at the pupils to see if they seem happy and motivated. Are they speaking positively about staff and everyday school life 4. Don’t be put off if you do not like an individual teacher, they may not be there when you child starts. 5. Try to get a general feel for the place and write down first impressions.

School open days can help you when you have to make that difficult decision of which school to apply your child to.

When are open days held?

6. Ask questions, particularly to pupils – do they like the teaching and enjoy school

Most open days are held in September and October. This is for families looking for a place for their child the following September.

7. Does the work on display show a large range of ability? Each child should be valued

What is a school open day? An open day allows prospective parents and pupils visit the school during the working week. You get the opportunity to visit classrooms, and will be shown round. Pupils attending the school can tell you about their time at the school.

It may be worthwhile to start having a look around schools a year before this. you can go to primary school open days when your child is three or in Year 5, aged 9-10 for secondary school. At a later date revisit the schools you are most interested in, September / October time when you need to apply.

The headteacher, head of admissions of head of year may organise a talk for you to attend.

How are open days organised?

16 inandaround

This can vary between schools. Open days for popular schools are very busy and the opportunity to talk

8. Are there sports and clubs so your child can have a hobby 9. Ask about lunch – are there health meals available and what is the cost 10. Listen to your instincts

Join the Hospice 5k Fun Run and become a rainbow of colour The Heart of Kent Hospice will be bringing a bit of colour to Maidstone on Sunday 28th September with Kent’s first Rainbow 5k Fun Run. Taking place at Mote Park, supporters are invited to team up with friends, family and colleagues to run, jog or walk the 5k charity run. Dressed in a white t-shirt they will be showered with different colour powder paints until they finish the course looking like a human rainbow. The runners will pass through four colour zones that will be located around the course with spectators throwing the paint. After the event there will be live music, entertainment and a chance to party before dusting off the paint and heading for home. Caroline Brinkman, Head of Community Engagement for the Hospice said: “This is a 5k charity run with a difference and we promise lots of fun and laughter once the paint starts flying. The paint is 100% hypoallergenic and eco-friendly so should not stain your clothes, but we recommend that you wear clothes and trainers that you don’t mind getting messy. Everyone is welcome to take part, and we don’t mind whether you choose to run, jog or walk around the course, it’s all about having a great time and raising money for a good cause. So please spread the word and tell your family and friends.” Registration is at 9am and the event starts at 10am. The cost is £15 for adults over 16, £10 for 10 -16 year olds and £5 for under 12s. You can also sign up a team of eight for £100. To book your place on the Rainbow 5k Fun Run visit www.hokh.org or call the Fundraising Team on 01622 790195.

Maidstone Museums’ Foundation unveils exciting programme of visits and events for friends Maidstone Museums’ Foundation is adding even more value to Friends’ membership by launching an exciting programme of events and visits. In the next six months, visits have been arranged to Tonbridge Castle and Stoneacre (Otham), two of Kent’s most attractive destinations. MMF, which promoted the attractions of membership at the recent Bearsted Carnival and Fayre (June 28), is also hosting a Jazz Evening at the Museums in St Faith’s Street in October, a Dickens-themed talk in November, and carols at Christmas-time. Details are given in a new on-line quarterly newsletter being sent to all Friends of MMF. The first edition, to be published shortly, launches a new era of communication with Friends, and aims to give an added incentive for people to sign up. As well as news of events, the newsletter will carry a pen portrait of the new MBC Cultural Services Manager Laura Case. It also sets out how the Foundation helps the Museums, with a description of the Anglo Saxon hoard purchased with MMF’s help in 2013. The newsletter encourages ideas and contributions from friends. New friends are being encouraged to sign up for a wonderful cultural experience, with the added value of visits and special events. They can join by completing a registration form available in the Museums’ reception area, or on the website, or by e mailing: maidstonemuseumsfoundation@outlook.com Chairman of MMF, Mark Baker, said “This is just another example of how the Maidstone Museums Foundation is working to bring all that is good about one of the best museums in the south east to an ever wider audience” maidstonemuseumsfoundation@outlook.com www.museum.maidstone.gov.uk/support/ inandaround

Don’t Leave Your Assets To Chance mature enough to inherit all of your assets at once. If your spouse inherits all of your assets, they then have the ability to pass them onto his or her own family with nothing going to yours, the rules will not allow you to choose who deals with your estate, they also do not allow you to appoint a guardian for your children, and they do not account for you and your spouse dying together.

A family death can be hard enough to cope with, but when someone passes away without a Will (intestate) dividing the estate can often cause disputes. The Inheritance and Trustees’ Powers Bill has changed the Intestacy Rules to give more power to the remaining spouse and to better reflect modern family life, however it is still no substitute for having a properly drawn up Will in place. From 1 October 2014, if the deceased has no children, the spouse, or civil partner, will now be entitled to all of the estate and will no longer have to share with the deceased’s parents or siblings. If there are children involved, the estate will be divided with half passing to the spouse and half divided amongst the children. However, these rules are still very restrictive and relying on the new Intestacy Rules is unlikely to fulfil your wishes and could see your assets passing to the wrong people. Nothing will pass to a life partner unless they are a spouse or a registered civil partner, the new rules do not account for children not being capable or

Having a properly drawn up Will in place is the only way to ensure that your assets are passed to the right people. It will allow you to take full control over the division of your assets, you can specify exactly who receives what, you can leave assets to those who may be unrelated to you, such as friends or charities, it will allow you to set up a trust fund for children who would not be able to cope with receiving a large sum all at once, it will enable you to appoint an estate executor and will give you the opportunity to appoint a guardian to look after your children. Modern family structures are getting more complex and not making a Will and leaving your assets to chance is unlikely to fulfil your wishes and can leave your loved ones arguing with costly legal bills. Mother & Daughter “Make” J&C Creations

Wouldn’t you love a job doing something you enjoy? In & Around magazine caught up with J&C Creations to find out how they became a local established family business in Park Wood. J & C Creations started in 2004 by mother and daughter Denise and Jenny Packham making handmade greetings cards to raise funds for an expedition trip Jenny was embarking on to Mongolia. From there we began exhibiting at local school fêtes and garden shows where our range of products grew to include gifts. As we started attending more shows we increased our product range to include card making supplies, J & C Creations was born. In 2005 we took the plunge and exhibited at our first large hobby craft show at Brighton. What a big learning curve that was!!! J & C Creations began to grow whilst still trying to juggle a full time job and full time education between us. As J & C Creations grew, so did our staff as we were joined by Julie Tidey who you will see on the stand at some of the shows. Julie is one of our main 30 inandaround

card designers, designing new card samples as our endless stream of new products arrive at our warehouse. She also runs our craft groups as well as organising a lot of our workshops. Summer 2011 was the year we took the plunge and relocated to larger business premises on Park Wood Industrial Estate. We have also had a brand new workshop room built and have started a programme of craft and jewellery workshops. Alongside this we also have 2 crafting social groups running every week,

“why not come along to one of our craft clubs” The Tuesday Group runs every Tuesday 10:30 - 12:30 and the Friday Group runs every Friday 10:30 - 12:30. We run between 6 to 8 workshops a month although we do hope to increase this next year and probably including a Saturday workshop once a month if there is enough interest. Our workshops cover a wide range of papercraft and jewellery techniques with all workshops completing at least one finished project, although some longer workshops may run over several sessions.

Don’t forget to keep checking our website at www.jandccreations.co.uk for the latest news, tips and techniques, gallery pictures, card projects, free downloads, competitions and special offers. We are currently open at our unit from Monday to Friday 10am – 3pm at Unit 20 Palace Industrial Estate, Bircholt Road, Park Wood, Maidstone, Kent ME15 0JW. So come and pay us a visit or if you require any further information please call us on 01622 862302 or email enquiries@jandccreations.co.uk

Dear Debbie My sister and I are the main carers for our elderly mother who lives alone a few miles away from both of us. She has always been a fiercely independent lady and has loved her home where she has lived for 40 years. It’s where her main memories of husband and family lie. After a few years of increasing confusion, she has now received a dementia diagnosis, apparently in early stage. We are both very reluctant to put her into a care home. Can home care help in this situation? Best Regards, Susan P

Dear Susan The question for you and your sister is “what course of action will be in your mother’s best interest?” Home care can work very well for some people especially where there are strong local relationships, say with neighbours or church groups because they can remain in contact with what is familiar to them. This often provides valuable reassurance in a situation which causes very real stress to those affected and their families. Regular visits from skilled carers can check regularly on well-being and safety, ensure adequate food intake and nutrition and ensure that medication is taken at the appropriate times. As the condition develops, regular contact with familiar faces offers reassurance, especially when the carers are trained in basic dementia coping strategies. You and your sister will obviously want to be at the heart of the care arrangements but carefully coordinated home care visits can help share the burden. Best Wishes, Debbie Moulton, Care Manager, Bluebird Care

Be a volunteer at Kent Life – and enjoy great events for free! Fancy looking after farmyard animals, putting your acting skills to the test as a costumed character, or maybe caring for a medieval herb garden? Kent Life Heritage Farm Park, near Maidstone, launches a new Volunteer Scheme this week, giving everyone the chance to enjoy their passion and help make a real difference at one of the county’s best-loved attractions. In return for giving just 30 hours of your time in a calendar year, you will be given a Volunteer Pass entitling you to free access to all of Kent Life’s fantastic events, which include the annual Hops ‘n’ Harvest Beer Festival, Christmas on the Home Front, and the hugely popular Bonfire and Fireworks Spectacular. The Volunteer Pass will also give you 20% off refreshments at Dotty’s Tearoom. Kent Life general manager Emily Hirons says: “Volunteers are incredibly important to us because we simply couldn’t do all the wonderful work we do without them. “The opportunities are really varied and adaptable to your skills and interests. You can work in the farmyard with the animals, help us with the gardening, dress up as a character in one of our historic houses, or simply help out in the office. “If you have a real passion for what you enjoy, a fun and positive attitude, and are keen to support the great team we have here, we want to hear from you, whatever your age! “The scheme is very flexible so you can choose what days you work. As long as you give us 30 hours of your time in a year, you can enjoy lots of great entertainment and fun days out here at Kent Life for free.” To find out more about volunteering opportunities at Kent Life, email enquiries@kentlife.org.uk
