Local furniture maker birthday party!
Local furniture maker is celebrating 45th anniversary! This country has always been at the forefront of furniture making and design, however, over the past two or three decades the market of premium handmade furniture has changed beyond recognition due to the influx of imports from the Far East and other developing markets. It is little wonder then, that a lot of English companies making handmade furniture, have either disappeared, or had to move their production abroad. This is not the case with Tudor Oak. We are proud to be making all of our furniture and joinery on our shores, using English Oak (Quercus Robur) and other home-grown timbers, carefully sources from responsible suppliers. Despite its name, the historical inspiration for Tudor Oak furniture and joinery spans over 300 years, from the early Tudor of mid-16th – 17th century, during the reign of Elizabeth I, through to the Georgian period of the 18th century. Tudor Oak are proud to carry on the traditions of fine English cabinet-making made famous by Chippendale, Hepplewhite and Sheraton; we are putting our own original stamp on it, marrying the traditional designs with modern functionality. Flying the flag for truly British manufacturing, Tudor Oak are producing the
furniture and joinery that can be enjoyed by generations. Our workshop doors are always open to visitors, interested in learning how each piece is created. We use traditional designs and techniques to produce exceptional quality, quintessentially British furniture and bespoke joinery – internal and external doors, windows and flooring – that grace period, often listed properties, as well as high quality newly built houses. Tudor Oak bespoke furniture and joinery will only improve with age. It is made of solid English oak with unique finish and meticulously designed and executed details. The result is an elegant piece that mixes the traditional and contemporary and stands out for its quality and classical beauty. On Saturday 17th of May the company is marking its 45th anniversary and everyone is invited to join in with the celebrations. We will be having drinks, canapes, enjoying a visit by the Mayor of Maidstone and our visitors will be offered 45% discount on all furniture orders. Our address is Parsonage Farm, Heath Road, Boughton Monchelsea ME17 4JB. Ring us on 01622 743747, see our site www.tudor-oak.co.uk for more information
or just turn up on Saturday 17th of May between 11 am and 4 pm.

Hay fever advice
Hay fever symptoms are the result of an over-reaction by the immune system. If you suffer from severe hay fever then you know how truly debilitating it can be. Your body produces an inflammatory response to any grasses and plant pollens. It is thought that around 20% of the population suffer from seasonal allergy problems and that means big business for the pharmaceutical companies. You can help your body to cope with symptoms of hay fever by keeping your immune system strong thus helping your natural anti-inflammatory pathways. Diet Increase your intake of anti-inflammatory foods; oily fish, seeds and nuts containing omega 3. Limit your intake of acidic foods; red meat, dairy and wheat. Dairy foods are mucous forming so keep these to a minimum or exclude when symptoms are very bad. Sugar is known to depress the immune system.
Ginger is a very powerful anti-histamine, try juicing a good chunk of fresh ginger with an apple every morning. Honey sourced from local bees can help build immunity to pollen. Use turmeric in your cooking as this spice has plenty of anti-inflammatory properties. Supplements Vitamin B6 helps to keep histamine under control, take this with magnesium. Probiotics will help keep your immune system strong. Bee prepared is an excellent brand to help prevent or reduce symptoms of hay fever. Quercetin is a very good anti-inflammatory supplement derived from plant flavonoids (onion is a natural source). Drink Nettle and licquorice tea as studies show these help to reduce upper respiratory problems. Julie Clark – Spring Nutrition

Pre-nuptial agreements The Law Commission have considered the potential risk that parties may be vulnerable to optimism and potentially pressure, whether deliberate or not, when entering into pre-nuptial agreements. For this reason, they have recommended that, whilst ‘qualifying pre-nuptial agreements’ should be enforceable as contracts, neither party should be able to make contractually enforceable agreements which irreversibly deal with their future needs for housing, childcare, income or any other aspects of ‘financial needs’.
To have and to hold, til death do us part…. but not without a pre-nup! On the 27th February the Law Commission released their report on ‘the future of financial orders on divorce’ and solicitors around England and Wales were eager to find out about the much-anticipated recommendations regarding the future of pre-nuptial agreements. The results…’qualifying pre-nuptial agreements’ should be legally binding subject to a strict set of preconditions being met. This would in effect mean that such agreements would be enforceable contracts between the parties and would not be subjected to the Court’s assessment of fairness and its application of discretion, when deciding how matrimonial assets should be divided upon the unfortunate breakdown of a marriage. The proposal seems to offer parties much more predictability and potential security however, on the flipside; there are also potential risks to parties who perhaps enter into a pre-nuptial agreement at a point when everyone intends that the marriage will continue.
20 inandaround
In essence this means that parties will be able to enter into agreements which will determine how some, or all, of their property is divided. However parties will still have the option open to them to issue an application at Court for a Financial Order, should they discover upon the unfortunate breakdown of their marriage that the agreement they had previously entered into does not in fact meet their ‘financial needs’. Moreover, the proposal to make ‘qualifying pre-nuptial agreements’ legally binding will not remove the Court’s powers to make financial orders to meet the parties ’financial needs’, even if such an Order goes against the terms of the previously agreed ‘qualifying pre-nuptial agreement.’ It would appear that the proposed reforms may be welcomed by those who are able to meet their needs independently of one another and who have assets they wish to protect from sharing, (for example couples marrying later in life or parties with inherited property they wish to protect). However, it also continues to provide security to those whose financial needs may outweigh the existence of any assets because ‘needs will inevitably continue to trump a pre-nuptial agreement.’ Gail Brooks is a solicitor in the family team at Gullands and can be reached at g.brooks@gullands.com www.gullands.com or call

Kent event centre to host the uk summer motorhome & caravan show 2014 - Show created in response to booming popularity of caravan holidays. The camping and caravan sector is booming in the UK – and the Kent Event Centre is helping to cater for this growing market by staging a major new two-day public show on Saturday 31st May and Sunday 1st June 2014 at Kent Showground near Maidstone. Event Developments stage some of the UK ’s largest outdoor motorhome and caravan events and have added the Kent show to their Schedule to serve the large and growing number of motorhome and caravan owners in the South East. In 2011 spending by Brits during domestic camping and caravan trips was up 12% compared to the year before. Organiser Russ Harman of Event Developments said: “Our decision has already proved popular with local dealerships and we are receiving some great feedback from enthusiasts who are looking forward to attending our event at Detling.” The event will feature trade stands aimed at experienced owners and first-time buyers alike, with new and used motorhomes and caravans for sale, plus all kinds of outdoor leisure accessories. Kent businesses are invited to take part in the event and trade stands are now booking, with prices from just £120+VAT. Other attractions will include a craft and gift fair, plus a Kids Corner, a bar and catering. 24 inandaround
Russ Harman added: “I’m really excited about the new show as the Kent Showground is a great venue with lovely modern facilities which will be ideal for our weekend campers to enjoy the event and to explore the local area.” The Kent Event Centre is enjoying a boom in bookings and is investing £1.5m in expanding facilities. A new structure is being built to replace the existing Kent Pavilion. The new Kent Pavilion will be 44 metres wide and 72 metres long and will seat up to 4,000 people in theatre style. Construction is due to be completed by the end of April 2014 and it will be officially opened at the Kent County Show in July. Alison said the investment, boosting choice and capacity for clients, was paying dividends in attracting more bookings. “ By improving facilities and maintaining a clear focus on customer service we are anticipating a hugely successful 2014.” To book trade stands, camping pitches and to buy entrance tickets for the show visit

CARE VISITS AT HOME
Good Old Fashioned Service ASK DEBBIE......... for help, advice and assistance Dear Debbie I have been looking after my mother recently and I am finding it hard to manage my job, family and care for her on a daily basis. I am looking for a care company to help my mother in the morning and evening but this is something completely new to me and I am nervous about sending a stranger to see my mother. Can you tell me about the type of training your staff receive and how they are introduced to your customers? Kind Regards, Susan K
Dear Sarah
DEBBIE MOULTON, CARE MANAGER OF BLUEBIRD CARE OFFERS HER ADVICE
If you have a question that
It can be difficult trying to balance your own life while trying to care for another you would like to ask Debbie and I understand the hesitation of trusting someone else to care for your mother. then please email her at debbie@bluebirdcare.co.uk All of our Care Workers are police checked which ensures they are safe to work with vulnerable adults and have a clear criminal record history. We provide full induction training to our Care Workers and also provide specialist training which covers topics such as dementia awareness, stroke support and mental capacity training to ensure they are competent and capable. The Care Workers are then provided with shadow training which allows them to work alongside an experienced Care Worker in the community. We also provide an introduction service which means we will introduce you to a Care Worker that we think would be a good match with your mother. This gives you and your mother the opportunity to meet them without commitment. A good care company will be extremely flexible and should be able to accommodate most situations. Best Wishes, Debbie Moulton, Care Manager, Bluebird Care

Asparagus millefeuilles
Seasonal ingredients in May The British asparagus season traditionally begins on 1 May and runs for around seven tor eight weeks, until the end of June. Perfect for a classy starter or canapés, these are deceptively quick and easy to make and the filling can be as simple or as fanciful as you like! SERVES: 12 PREP TIME: 10 mins COOKING TIME: 15 mins INGREDIENTS: • 1 packet ready-rolled puff pastry • Beaten egg or milk, to glaze • 1 pack of soft cream cheese • Cooked asparagus spears – allow 4-6 per person METHOD: 1. Preheat the oven to 200C. Line a baking tray with parchment. 2. Lay the pastry on a floured board and, using a sharp knife, cut it into eight or twelve pieces. (If you’re not feeding eight to twelve people, cut the pastry in half and save half of it for another dish.) Lay the pastry rectangles on the baking tray – don’t put them too close together as they are going to expand. You might need two trays, or to cook 30 inandaround
several batches. Brush with a little beaten egg or milk, and bake for 15 minutes until they have puffed up and are cooked through but not too brittle. 3. Set aside to cool for a few minutes, then carefully slice each one in half, horizontally, to make a top and a bottom. 4. Spread the cut edges of the pastry with soft cheese, then arrange the cooked asparagus on top of the pastry bottoms, and sandwich with the pastry tops. You can make these with cold, precooked asparagus or warm, freshly steamed asparagus. Note: These can also be made with tenderstem or purple sprouting broccoli, fine green beans and carrot sticks. Go gourmet by mashing some blue cheese, cracked black pepper, fresh herbs or lemon zest into the soft cheese Have your favourite recipe published in the “in & around” magazine, email sarah@inandaroundkent.co.uk, telephone 01622 741824, post to In & Around Kent, 14 Oaklands, Maidstone, Kent, ME15 6SD.

Garden Makeover: Lawns
At this time of year, the lawn is actively growing and requires feeding, moss-killing, weeding and regular mowing. Spring is also a suitable time to overseed sparse areas. Here are some of the tasks to undertake over spring and summer: Mowing This is the most obvious (and one of the most important) maintenance task over spring and summer. Mowing regularly keeps the lawn in good health. Killing moss Moss is a problem in damp, poorly drained lawns. Spring is a good time to remedy moss problems.
34 inandaround
Feeding Use a proprietary spring or summer lawn fertiliser at the manufacturer’s recommended rates. Feeding the lawn will increase vigour and help prevent weeds and moss from establishing. Apply fertilisers when the soil is moist, or when rain is expected. If grass loses its vigour and freshness between late spring and late summer (often May to August), repeat the application of spring or summer lawn fertiliser or apply 15g per sq m (½oz per sq. yd) sulphate of ammonia mixed with four times its weight dry soil. Mixing with soil ensures even distribution and avoids scorching the grass. Apply this mixture in cool, moist conditions and lightly water it in. As an organic alternative, use chicken manure pellets. Repeat fertiliser application a third time if needed six to eight weeks later. Do not apply spring or summer lawn fertilisers, chicken manure pellets or sulphate of ammonia after August. They contain too much nitrogen for autumn use, encouraging green leafy growth at the wrong time of year, when it could be damaged by winter cold or pests and disease.
Over-seeding After moss or weeds have been removed, or where grass is growing sparsely, over-seeding may be necessary. Early autumn is the best time for this job, but mid-spring is also suitable. • Break up the surface with a fork and rake it to make a reasonably fine surface. • Sow grass seed at half the recommended rate or, where there are no recommendations, at 10-15g per sq m (½oz per sq yd).
Problems When over-seeding the lawn, it can be difficult to match the colour of a new seed mix with your existing lawn. In such circumstances it may be necessary to over-seed the whole lawn to achieve uniformity of colour and texture. Areas of dry shade, such as under trees, become sparse very quickly despite adequate care. Consider over-seeding on an annual basis to maintain a dense sward.
• Lightly rake to incorporate the seed into the surface. • Where birds are a problem, net the area. • If the weather remains dry for two or three days water gently with a sprinkler. • Grass should sprout seven to 10 days after sowing. In heavily used areas, choose a hardwearing utility mix containing ryegrass. Most lawn grasses do not thrive in shade, so for these areas choose a shadetolerant mix. Watering Even if lawns turn brown and dry over summer, they usually recover well when rains return. Watering is usually not necessary over summer. If you do have to water the lawn and maintain a green sward, water when the soil becomes dry, but before the grass turns yellow or brown. If the ground is very hard, aerate it by spiking with a garden fork before watering, to aid water penetration. Watering once a week to every 10 days is normally sufficient. Looking after new lawns Lawns from turf should be left completely un-used for their first week. Lawns from seed should be left un-used until their first mowing. Avoid using new lawns heavily in their first season. Newly laid lawns can be fed like established lawns. They need watering, but should not be over watered, as this may result in shallow rooting and poor establishment.
