Dubai - The perfect antidote to Christmas petals sprinkled on the bed and a bowl of fruit on the coffee table. The staff were unbelievably friendly and attentive and there were lots of them - talk about being waited on hand and foot. Despite the main restaurant being a buffet affair, the food was excellent and you could order from the à la carte menu at no extra cost.

fter a stressful Christmas hosting my future in-laws (you always get the sense they’re making sure you’re the real deal) a short holiday involving some sunshine, shopping and plenty of relaxation was very appealing. And what better place to go than that well known global mega-city where the summer never ends, Dubai? We flew out on the day after Boxing Day from Birmingham and, after a 7 hour flight, landed in a warm dessert evening with lights of the city putting even Las Vegas in the shade. We were staying in the Jumeriah Zabeel Saray resort hotel a few miles down the coast from the city centre, a western oasis in what is really a Muslim city, although a very cosmopolitan one. The hotel was the most luxurious place I have ever stayed in; we were upgraded to a suite and were greeted by rose

A word about clothing – at the hotel, on the beach or at the water park, shorts and bikinis are fine, just as in a western resort. In the shopping malls, city centre and restaurants, tee shirts and trousers are the order of the day for men, covered shoulders and below the knee skirts for women. Let’s face it, you wouldn’t wander around London in shorts with no shirt on, why should you in Dubai? There is so much to do in Dubai that the five days we had there were totally inadequate. Let’s start with the shopping. There are two main malls, the Mall of the Emirates which is merely vast and the Mall of Dubai which is truly immense. Don’t expect Primark or TK Maxx; the shops mainly sell luxury goods, albeit considerably cheaper than in London or Manchester. Of course there are plenty of restaurants too, even a skating rink in the Mall of Dubai. The Karama Market is a must visit destination for enthusiastic shoppers; it’s basically a large square surrounded by small shops and stalls selling knock off luxury goods such as watches, jackets and handbags. Some of the stuff in the stalls is decidedly cheap and
nasty but, if you enquire about a particular item, don’t be surprised if you’re led away to another stall which has top quality gear in it. You’re expected to haggle - it’s all part of the fun. My advice is to offer a third of the asking price and be bartered up to half price. If you’re missing the joys of winter in Europe, don’t worry – you can go skiing in Dubai! I’m not joking, there’s an indoor ski centre where, for 50 euros, you can rent boots, skis, poles and a ski suit and spend three hours zipping down the slopes; there’s even a black run. At the other end of the scale is the Wild Wadi Water Park which, like everything else in Dubai, is bigger and better than any other water park. It’s owned by the Jumeriah chain so we enjoyed free admission and a free transfer bus, courtesy of the hotel. It wouldn’t be a visit to Dubai without a trip up the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building. It’s much cheaper to book it through the concierge at your hotel and this also has the advantage that you can pick a timeslot. On our last evening we rode up to the 124th floor (there’s now a viewing platform on the 148th floor) and watched the sun set over the city and the surrounding dessert. It was truly one of the most spectacular sights I have ever seen. Dubai might not be the cheapest holiday but it is certainly one of the most entertaining. Everyone should do it once.

A fashion for all things local a love of fashion for living - from personal attire to cosy and well-crafted spaces. Much as you would put together an outfit, lots of attention is given to the juxtaposition of tactile cushions in cleverly clashing patterns and textures together with woollen throws. My local high street is teeming with individual and eclectic interiors stores. One puts together brilliant basics like antique style scrubbing brushes and simple honest glass jars make unusual and homely gifts, another features a blend of authentic home luxuries, from lavish candles to hand crafted coasters and shapely wooden apples and pears - adore those fruit display pieces.

hristmas has been and gone and now we’re onto the New Year sales but throughout the whole palaver I have made a conscious effort to keep my purchases locally inspired, sourced or themed. Of course there have to be those exquisite fragrance themed buys like my mother’s favourite Angel perfume, which means a delve into John Lewis is an absolute must - but how nice to mix it up with unusual, unique and individual presents that are thoughtfully discovered on your local, and no doubt lovely, high

street. The idea of shopping locally has been gaining momentum for the last few years now; as we swing away from the “three for twos” and the monotony of the traditional gift set. Coco Chanel insightfully said, “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street; fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” A fascination with the stylish home has led to the growth of interior shops and blogs which combine
Of course, it’s not just interior knick knacks to be found locally; I grabbed a great black top with gold zip detail and flouncy sleeves for £35. You would also be wise to invest in signature looks - softly styled dresses in beautiful fabrics or quirky shift dresses with added lace embellishments.

How Aloe Vera can help
I’m yet to meet anyone who hasn’t heard of Aloe Vera. Almost everyone is familiar with the Aloe Vera plant. People have been breaking open the leaf and using Aloe Vera as a topical application to treat traumatised skin for centuries. More recently we now see Aloe Vera in many products on our supermarket shelves, in cosmetics, moisturisers and even baby wipes. I do meet many people however, who are unaware that Aloe Vera is consumed as a drink all over the world, for its health benefits. Some tell me they’ve seen health drinks which contain Aloe Vera juice but I have to tell them that this isn’t the same as Aloe Vera gel. Any plant can be juiced, much in the same way as a berry, or a grape can simply be crushed down into a juice. But Aloe Vera gel is the purest form, harvested from the leaf by cutting it open and extracting only the best, leaving the outer leaf behind. It’s this gel which can help when used as a complementary medicine for many common complaints. For me personally, it’s had a huge effect on my life. This time last year I was depressed, my skin was
10 inandaround
terrible, I was overweight and my energy levels were very low. A friend recommended drinking Aloe Vera gel. I quickly saw a huge improvement, not just in my skin but my hair, my nails and my energy levels. I then wanted to learn more about this unusual plant. I couldn’t believe no-one had recommended it to me before. The more I learnt, the more I liked! I heard about the C9 programme which was designed to cleanse your digestive system using a combination of products but primarily the Aloe Vera drinking gel. This saw me drop 11lbs in weight and my energy levels boosted even further. I now drink Aloe Vera gel every morning, I have lost 17lbs in total and am happier and healthier than I have been in years. Aloe Vera drinking gel is an allround health tonic which has so many benefits. There are over 75 different nutrients which have been identified in the gel including; vitamins, minerals, amino acids and more. The naturally occurring nutrients found in Aloe Vera gel are thought to possess many qualities;
anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antiseptic, immunomodulating, antiviral.... the list is long, too long to print here! It really is an amazing plant, underappreciated by many. I’m not medically qualified and I wouldn’t encourage anyone to stop using traditional medicine but instead I recommend Aloe Vera gel as having a complementary role to play in the management of a number of conditions. It’s not just for those in ill health either, everyone can benefit from its properties. I am now an independent distributor of the products which have benefitted me and my family so much. Film Review - Intersteller
Director: Christopher Nolan In the last days of a dying planet Earth, NASA sends one final mission into space to find a new home for the human race. For some time it has been difficult to review the films of Christopher Nolan. This is not a difficulty created by by his reputation as a filmmaker of the highest regard, or even by the weight of expectation (brought on by the first factor) that each of his movies carry with them. Although these reasons contribute to the headache that is slicing, dicing and deciding if his latest flick is any good or not, they are vastly outweighed, somewhat fittingly, by scale. All Nolan’s movies, from The Dark Knight onwards, are enormous. Not necessarily just in variety of locations, budget and length, but in the ideas and philosophy they stretch and strain to explore. How do you compare that to Grown Ups 2? If Inception (2010) was Nolan’s biggest movie so far, Interstellar is on another level. Characters are flung halfway across the universe, traversing not only the dimensions of space but of time as well. Nolan has admitted that where our knowledge of the universe ends, the creators of Interstellar have guessed, conjecture carried on the back of the latest scientific theory at least. Nevertheless, the film is at its weakest when it reaches too far, opting for the supernatural and sentiment over science and reason. Some may even be profoundly disappointed that the resolution of all things is made in one of these quantum leaps of imagination, rather than in a medium readily related to the human experience. But it would defy the core-principle of what Nolan is ultimately trying to achieve to cater to what humanity is now, rather than to what Interstellar wills us to become. Interstellar is deeply flawed. But it is also breath-taking, amazing and comes at perfect time in human history. A time where men and women are once again wondering what lies above and beyond and the best of us are trying to get there. Our Rating *****

It’s all in the wrist action
T
hose who remember the 1980s, and the vogue for wearing towelling wristbands if you were even vaguely considering any form of exercise, will have been wondering how long it would take for this trend to come round again. Well, I’m happy to say that it has – and today’s must have fashion accessory for sporty types does a whole lot more than stop the palms of your hands from getting sweaty. There are a plethora of products on the market; let’s take a look at a few of them. Probably the most popular is the Nike Fuelband – it’s already on its second generation. This chunky device is intended to be worn most of the time; it isn’t fully waterproof so you can’t go swimming in it and it needs to be recharged periodically. It contains an accelerometer to measure arm movements and a small LED display that provides a limited amount of information. The Fuelband can connect to a computer or mobile device via Bluetooth and a USB port. Initially, you set up your profile on a computer including your height, weight and so on. Then you set up the sports and activities that you intend to perform and set yourself a series of goals, for instance running 3km each day. When you achieve a goal, the wristband sends you a message of encouragement. Real lovers of data can sync their wristband with the Nike Fuel website and view graphs of their performance, then brag about it to their friends via the built in social media site. The Fuelband costs around £129. Next up is the Fitbit Flex. This has an advantage over the Fuelband in that it is a tiny module that fits in a replaceable rubber wristband, which means that you don’t have to wear the band all the time. The Fitbit is more geared towards lifestyle and wellbeing rather than sporting prowess; it will tell you how many steps you have taken and calories you burned but not how quickly you finished your run. One thing it does do better than the Fuelband is to measure and learn your sleep patterns. This means that you can set the alarm to wake you as you move into a light sleep, therefore reducing. tiredness. On the face of it, the Fitbit represents pretty good value too, a snip at just £80.
14 inandaround
Our final contender is the Jawbone Up. This seems like the most complete product out of the group and is geared towards helping athletes manage their potential and help those who want to lose weight. You can enter in a variety of sports and the band will give you real time feedback on performance and calories burnt; you can even enter the number of calories consumed during the day – ideal for those seeking to lose weight. It also monitors sleep patterns in the same way that the Fitbit does. The sculpted nylon band, available in a range of colours, really looks the part too. At £124, the Jawbone comes in cheaper than the Fuelband and seems to be a superior product. While I have to admire the way that these products make use of state of the art technology at an affordable price, I’d have to question how they fit in with the modern lifestyle of most people. Serious athletes and sportsmen (and women) will already have a training program worked out in conjunction with a nutritionist and their coach. They don’t need any of these products. For those who just want to get a bit more exercise, they represent complete overkill – they don’t need all that data and they’d probably rather not have a hefty bracelet attached to their wrist for 24 hours a day. As for people who want to lose weight, all these devices have a fatal weakness; they tell you how many calories you’ve burnt but not how many you’ve consumed, something most overweight people have a real problem in calculating. Never mind, wearing a sport band says all the right things about you – you’re sporty, body conscious and dedicated. Money well spent!

Will house prices remain soft for the foreseeable future?
The Nationwide Building Society is the latest organisation to release data pointing to a weakening housing market. It revealed that annual house price growth had slowed to 8.5% in November from 9% the month before. Meanwhile, the Land Registry, probably the most accurate source of house price data, showed that prices actually fell slightly in London in the third quarter. All this doom and gloom flies in the face of other news coming out of the economy. GDP growth remains strong, consumer confidence is close to an all-time high and real wages are finally showing signs of outstripping inflation. Inflation itself is very low and any rise in interest rates is unlikely to happen before the end of the year - so what is going on? Two factors are causing the bulk of the damage, I think; firstly, the new rules on mortgages that came into effect last year are still working their way through the system - lenders don’t really understand them and the Treasury probably needs to look at reviewing them slightly before too much damage is done. Secondly, prices in London have risen so rapidly and to such ridiculous heights that even highly paid workers have been effectively priced out of the market. What will happen next? My feeling is that the new rules on mortgages, particularly proof of income, will be relaxed somewhat, which should get the flow of lending back to the required level. Real incomes should start to rise quite strongly which will help. London house prices will take a breather this year, I think, but other areas of the country such as the East Midlands and North West should see some decent growth. With any luck, house building should also pick up which will add some much needed impetus to the market; sales volumes have fallen sharply over the last few months. All of this comes with one proviso – the outcome of the general election looks extremely uncertain at the moment. All bets are off until May.

A whole world of television at your fingertips able for as little as £50) converts any TV into a Smart TV, as does an Xbox or Playstation. Better still, if your TV and laptop or mobile device are DLNA compatible, whatever you watch online can also be viewed on your TV.
N
ormally in this column I write about the methods for delivering content – gadgets, gizmos and software – but what about the content itself? I think it’s fair to say that never before have so many films and so much television been available to view wherever and whenever we want to watch it. Let’s take a closer look at the many and various ways you can have your fill of the moving image. We’ll start with Freeview, the dizzying array of some 60 free to view terrestrial television channels that are available to anyone with a digital aerial and a TV licence, courtesy of the BBC, ITV Channel 4, BSkyB and Arqiva, the transmitter operator. It’s worth remembering that Freeview has only been around for 12 years but, in that time, the whole shebang has migrated online and onto the 3G, and now 4G, networks. You can watch live TV on your phone or tablet via a variety of apps. As if that wasn’t enough, if you miss your favourite program, you can just watch it whenever it’s convenient thanks to catch up television services such as 4OD and BBC iPlayer. Catch up television started out as a treat to be enjoyed via your laptop or mobile device but now it can be enjoyed in 48” HD glory thanks ISP “boxes” such as Virgin Media or BT Vision. If you don’t want to stump up the subscription costs for one of these, you can enjoy catch up TV for free on your Smart TV. You don’t even have to shell out for a Smart TV; a BlueRay player (avail16 inandaround
It is said of Freeview that there are 60 channels and sometimes nothing worth watching on any of them. If that is the case, there’s always Pay TV, mainly in the form of Sky but Virgin Media and BT also offer rival services. All three offer movies and their own TV series but where they have cornered the market, particularly Sky, is in the area of sports coverage. Premiership football, rugby league, Formula 1 – if you are addicted to any of these, you are probably shelling out a fair chunk of money each month to Sky. If, however, it is movies or addictive TV series such as Breaking Bad that you crave, there are a wealth of subscription TV services available over the internet, courtesy of the rapid development in streaming video which in turn has been enabled by ever higher broadband speeds. Netflix is probably the best known, but Amazon Prime and others are catching up fast. These services have two big advantages: they are relatively cheap (a basic Netflix subscription is less than a fiver per month) and you can watch what you want whenever you want; you’re not chained to the TV schedule. If a fiver a month is still too much, there’s always pay as you go services such as Blinkbox. The latest gizmo on the market is the Amazon Fire TV which gives you access to movie streaming services, games and music, which can be yours for just £69. Of course, the big deal from Amazon’s point of view is that you can buy films, box sets, games and music videos from them and stream them straight to your TV. All these things have been made possible because your TV is no longer chained to the aerial, cable or satellite dish. The modern TV is internet enabled by a variety of means but, at the end of the day, it is all about the content. If no one is making great films, compelling dramas, hilarious comedies or fascinating documentaries, there will always be 60 channels and nothing to watch.

Take your seats please
A
s a gardener, being bound by the Horticultural Hippocratic Oath means that I am destined for a life where I am unable to just sit and enjoy the beauty of either my or someone else’s creation – I’m always “on duty” to give advice or treat sick and ailing gardens! But for everyone else, unencumbered by this annoying affliction, planning where you are going to do your entertaining and enjoy some al fresco dining, or simply providing somewhere to park your bottom after a hard day’s graft, is an important consideration. For the majority of us, this normally constitutes a paved (or decked) patio area adjacent to the house so we can step out the back door and reach a chair without spilling too much of our gin and tonic. Even so, sun worshipers will naturally migrate to the sunniest and hottest spot in the garden and, obviously, a shady retreat is essential for the rest of us! The next bit is the fun bit - deciding what on earth you’re going to sit on – and the world really is your oyster. Traditionally, there are those ubiquitous teak (from “managed sources” of course!) patio sets that gently mature (otherwise known as decay!) over the years to something akin to driftwood, unless you give them an annual libation of oil or some other kind of preservative. Alternatively, their aluminium counterparts come in an amazing array of styles and prices. At this point I must offer a word of advice – don’t scrimp on the size of your seating area or else, just as in the rest of your house, you will always overcrowd the space and will quickly regret not splashing out on something a bit more man-sized in the first place. Chairs slipping off the edge of the paving and tipping your guests and their plates of food into the flower borders may be highly amusing at the time but, when your grandma ends up impaled on the Berberis, maybe it’s time to re-consider things! Personally I like to see some free thinking come into play when it comes to the actual seats. If you have a small courtyard, it makes a lot of sense to incorporate features such as raised planting beds into seats, incorporating a lovely mix of herbs and flowers in the adjoining beds to create an aromatic paradise. Or, if you prefer something more contemporary, how about something like this striking curved bench we designed and built as part of a smart modern garden? (see photo) This is perfect if you don’t want to faff about with messy furniture cluttering up the patio and would rather have something which is integral to and enhances the rest of the garden design – painting it white does just that! Rightly popular these days are more “organic” arrangements using chunky cubes of wood in various sizes and, my particular favourite, gabions filled with something unusual like broken terracotta pots and given a hardwood lid to make a stunning and useful garden feature. Dotted around the garden in strategic locations, they not only look great but also offer a brilliant, eco-friendly solution to providing extra habitats for a whole range of wildlife that will enjoy nestling in all the crevices. Lastly, and arguably most importantly, those of a romantic nature should look no further than the Love Seat – a curling ‘S’ shaped two seater based on the yin and yang symbol – a perfect spot to share a glass of bubbly and celebrate important events in your life such as wedding anniversaries!!

Health
Bariatric Surgery Bariatric (weight loss) surgery can significantly reduce body fat very quickly. It is used to treat people who are dangerously obese as a last resort and is only available on the NHS when the obesity is life-threatening and lifestyle changes have been unsuccessful. The most common types of bariatric surgery used are gastric band (where a band reduces the size of the stomach so that you feel full from a smaller amount of food) and gastric bypass (where the digestive system is re-routed past most of the stomach). To qualify to join the waiting list for bariatric surgery on the NHS, a patient must have either a BMI of 40 or greater or a BMI of 35 or above together with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or another serious health problem that might improve with weight loss. The procedures are also available privately, although they will only be undertaken where the obesity is causing a risk to health. Following bariatric surgery, it is necessary to maintain a carefully controlled, lifelong diet plus regular exercise to prevent putting weight back on or long term complications, so it is not a magic cure. The surgery itself carries a risk of a blood clot in the leg or lung and can also cause internal bleeding with a risk of death of around 0.1% - the risk is highest for patients with high blood pressure or a BMI over 50. However, weight loss surgery can be very effective when the agreed post-surgery plan is stuck to; typically weight is reduced by around 50% using a gastric band and around 66% with a gastric bypass. Diabetes and high blood pressure can be much improved or even cured following surgery and weight loss. The rapid weight loss may result in unsightly loose folds of skin – these often require further surgery to correct. Mental health problems such as depression and anxiety will not necessarily be cured by weight-loss surgery. Bariatric surgery is not an easy route to weight loss but can be very effective; ask your doctor for further advice. YMCA NEW YEAR GET FIT A6 ad:Layout 1 28/11/2014 11:30 Page 1

Road Test - Audi TT TFSI counter to something straight out the Starship Enterprise and every piece of information you could possibly desire is available in one place. As you would expect from Audi, the fit and finish of every last bit of plastic is absolutely perfect.
T
he third generation of Audi’s fast becoming iconic TT has just landed… and everybody knows about it thanks to the truly spectacular TV ad, which is designed to appeal to the 8 year old boy who lurks inside every car obsessed man. The original TT arrived back in 1998 and caused an immediate splash thanks to its ultra-stylish looks, strong performance and legendary VW build quality. This latest version is instantly recognisable as a TT; the dimensions, proportions and styling cues are nearly identical to the original car but it has been subtly updated and looks as sharp as a Paul Smith suit. The changes are most obvious from the front – I love the razor sharp headlights, angular grill and the cooling vents that would be right at home on a Lamborghini. But, actually, it is when you climb inside that the new TT really bowls you over completely; the interior is simply a wonderful place to be. The air vents look like the turbofan of a Rolls Royce jet engine and the steering wheel could have come from a Le Mans racer, but the multimedia display where the instrument binnacle should be is the real star of the show. You can change the display from classic view with prominent speedo and rev
At the moment there are just two engines available, a 2 litre TFSI petrol with 227bhp and a similar capacity diesel with 182bhp that is also astonishingly frugal. A blisteringly fast 305bhp TTS version arrives next year. The TFSI is good for 0-62 in 6 seconds dead with a top whack of 155mph, more than adequate for most people’s needs. The power goes to the front wheels as standard or Audi’s excellent Quattro 4 wheel drive system is available as a cost option. A slick 6 speed manual gearbox is also standard, with the lightening quick flappy paddle version again bumping up the price by some margin. From the outset, motoring journalists have criticised the handling of the TT as uninvolving, probably because of the front wheel drive. For this third generation model, the body has lashings of aluminium used in its construction, making it lighter and more rigid than ever before. The steering has been replaced with a setup that is even more direct, remarkably precise and provides masses of feedback. A Drive Select system comes as standard and offers a Sport mode that firms up the suspension and sharpens the throttle response to racing car levels. Despite all this, some journalists still carp on that it’s not as good as a Porsche. Maybe so, but, take it from me, if you
want to drive very fast around corners without having to worry about dying in a ball of flaming wreckage, this is the car for you. That traditional Audi Achilles heel, an overly firm ride, is still present but to a lesser extent. The base spec model that I drove is positively comfortable, though the S Line version with 19” wheels still hammers over every bump and pothole. One change that won’t be so welcome is the price list. The entry level model comes in at just under £30,000 on the road, £4,000 more than the previous model, and you don’t have to tick many boxes on the options list to push that up towards £35k. On the plus side, the new TT comes very well equipped as standard. Even so, for a car with such stunning looks, potent performance, excellent build quality and that wonderful interior, it seems like pretty good value for money. Form an orderly queue please. Christmas doesn’t always bring good cheer
Every year the press will run stories about the first working day after the New Year being nicknamed “divorce day by family lawyers. I would not necessarily think that there is one specific day, but certainly January is a peak time for new enquiries. Clearly, a marriage that is working well is not going to come to an end simply because it is Christmas, but if there are underlying problems, the stress of spending time together and the financial pressures it brings can bring other issues to a head. When a marriage or relationship ends, it is important to sort out the practicalities and that is best done with the help of a family solicitor. Emotions will often run high, people will pass blame and it may be difficult to reach any type of agreement without third party help and guidance.
The most pressing issue is likely to be the financial situation, particularly the family home. Very often parties do not have sufficient income to run two homes, and it is important to ensure that the mortgage, if there is one, is paid. However, it is sensible to avoid making hasty decisions so consideration should be given to both short term and longer term solutions. Often couples are forced to remain living under the same roof whilst negotiations take place. As part of this it is crucial to obtain full details of the financial position of both parties. If the parties were married, all assets, whether in sole or joint names are potentially matrimonial assets, so valuations should be obtained. This includes pensions and it can often take some time for the pension company to provide this information so it is worth applying for it as early as possible. Parties should give thought to their future needs and plans, setting realistic monthly budgets if possible. If there are children, their needs must be considered both in financial terms but also regarding contact with their parents once they are living apart. There is no rule requiring that they live with one parent rather than another, and more families are moving towards shared care arrangements, but the plans need to be sensible and represent the best interests of the child. It may be sensible to involve older children in discussions about
the future, they may need to be reassured and should of course not witness arguments. Divorce proceedings may need to be considered. The only ground for divorce in England is that the marriage has irretrievably broken down, and this is demonstrated by reliance on one of a number of facts. These include adultery and unreasonable behaviour but also having lived separate and apart for more than 2 years. Some couples choose the latter approach, meaning that no party is effectively to blame. This delay does not prevent the financial matters being resolved, and perhaps embodied in Deed of Separation, a document setting out the intentions of the parties. However, if it is apparent that the assistance of the courts may be needed, divorce proceedings will need to be commenced. The input of a solicitor can be invaluable in ensuring that the fairest and most appropriate settlement is reached and it is always recommended that both parties seek independent legal advice. For further advice Julie Hobson is a solicitors at Gullands Solicitors and can be reached at j.hobson@ gullands.com, 01622 689775 or visit www.gullands.com.

Opinion
Close, but still no cigar
O
ur little organisation recently moved offices. Among the multitude of things to sort out was what should have been the relatively straightforward matter of appointing a new electricity supplier. In the event, no sooner had the phone lines been connected than I began to be bombarded with calls from energy companies and price comparison services, all keen to earn a bit of commission by persuading me to switch supplier. Bearing in mind that I had only been in the new offices for a matter of hours, I was bewildered as to how these people knew my name, the name of my business, my phone number and the fact that I had just become responsible for paying the electricity bill at the premises.
Another time they forgot to send me a bill for over a year, then suddenly remembered and took £2500 out of my account without any notice. Needless to say, paying the mortgage was quite tricky that month. Even so, over the last 18 months there has been a marked improvement at EDF. They adjust the amount of the direct debit payment down over the summer months and that means at the end of the billing period I actually owe them a small amount of money instead of them owing me a great pile of dosh. I can’t help but notice that the price I pay per unit has fallen considerably as well. Clearly, all the legislation that is being heaped on the big energy firms is starting to have an effect.
Eventually I twigged; the landlord had passed on my contact details to the existing electricity supplier, E.ON, as the new tenant. One of a raft of changes that has been imposed on the energy suppliers by the government is that when an energy account changes hands, the details of the new account holder must be made available to the rival energy companies by the existing supplier. This is intended to stop the existing supplier from simply acquiring a new customer by default and promptly putting them on an expensive tariff. In practice, this means that a lady from Scottish and Southern Energy will call you relentlessly until you are driven to the verge of suicide.
But before you start thinking that everything in the garden is rosy, I have a cautionary tale. I recently heard about a woman whose husband died suddenly. She tried to transfer the energy account into her own name, only to be told that the tariff she was on was no longer available. Her supplier, E.ON, then took the opportunity to apply some high pressure sales techniques to persuade her to enter into a new, more expensive contract, hardly appropriate for someone who has just lost her spouse. My own experience with SSE demonstrates that they are still not averse to high pressure sales tactics and several energy companies have been fined for using misleading sales pitches. Things are definitely improving but there is still a long way to go before confidence in the big six has been restored to the consumer in the street.
On the basis that I never buy anything off people who pester me, I found a price comparison site online and put in the details my landlord had helpfully provided. Inevitably, this triggered another barrage of phone calls but, eventually, I managed to secure a “most competitive” quote. Armed with this hard won information, I went back to E.ON and was surprised when they offered me a price about 20% lower than the “most competitive quote.” Go figure! My home energy supplier is EDF and I have long been appalled by their customer service, though not to the extent that I could be bothered to switch supplier – they’re like politicians, all as bad as each other, right? At one stage they set my direct debit payments so high that THEY ended up owing ME £1200. Then it took four phone calls, two letters and six months before they could be persuaded to pay me the money back. 32 inandaround

Recipe
Pot roast pheasant leg
Serves 4 Ingredients - Pot roast legs 2 whole pheasants 2 carrots 2 red onions 3 sticks celery 100ml red wine 500ml chicken stock Table salt 2 sprigs rosemary 4 cloves garlic Chop the carrots, celery & onion into uniform pieces, place into a heavy bottomed sauce pan and fry over a high heat in a little oil. Add the pheasant legs and cook until the skin starts to brown, then add the garlic and rosemary. Add the red wine and stock and braise at 150C for 3 hours. Allow to cool a little, then strip the meat into sections, discarding any sinew, bones or large pieces of fat. Pass the cooking liquor through a sieve and chill well to separate the fat from the jus. Now roll the leg meat in cling film to form a sausage shape and chill for at least 2 34 inandaround
hours. Once the pheasant leg is set, cut into 5 cm thick disks and pan roast in a little vegetable oil until well coloured. Place these discs into a casserole dish with the pheasant juices & add the shaped dumplings. Finish in the oven at 180C for about 15 minutes. Ingredients - Roast Pheasant crown 1 whole pheasant crown Salt & pepper 50g butter Season the crown well with salt and pepper. Heat a heavy based frying pan and add a little vegetable oil, colour well then add the butter and roast at 180C for 12 minutes, turning just once. Ingredients - Blackberry Jus 100g blackberries Jus from pheasant legs Heat the jus, add the butter & allow the sauce to thicken, then drop in the blackberries and serve. Serve with seasonal vegetables and mashed potato

5 Best diet changes
A new year - a new start. How can you start improving your diet and your chances of leading a healthier lifestyle? First – eat breakfast! After many hours without food our bodies need refuelling to bring the blood sugar back up and ensure the brain and muscles are functioning properly. Eating breakfast aids concentration and creates energy. Drink more water We lose on average 2-4 litres of water a day, which needs to be replaced. Current advice is to drink 6-8 glasses daily to ensure that our brain, blood and muscles are able to function at their best. Eat more fruit and vegetables. Their vitamins and minerals boost the immune system, whilst antioxidants fight cancer and disease, and fibre cleanses the gut. We should eat five portions per day. Eat less red meat Reduce the risk of bowel and other cancers. Health experts suggest 500g per week (the equivalent of one steak, one pork chop, 2 sausages and a portion of Bolognese sauce) or 70g per day (three rashes of bacon). Eat more consciously Take time to really taste and savour the food in your mouth. Be aware of the textures and flavours - and chances are you will enjoy your food more whilst eating less of it!
