Editor’s Letter Thank you so much to everyone who contacted me for our first issue! I received a bundle of information some of which I was unable to share with you last month due to time restrictions but I have been fortunate to publish all details in our second issue of “Life in Loose”. Don’t forget this is YOUR magazine too, so please do not be shy of sending me information to include in future issues. From speaking with lots of people over the years a community magazine is a great way for us to communicate with fellow neighbours, share information, organise events and meet ups. Speaking of meet ups, there is a meet up this month to help keep Loose tidy. If you see rubbish on the ground don’t walk past it, pick it up and dispose of it for the sake of you and our community. I was walking my dog last month and discovered about 100 lottery forms all over the path on the Loose Road. I picked

them all up (avoided the one in the vomit, so we all know who threw them on the floor!). I regularly see a man picking up litter around Cripple Street and I think we need more people like this. The photo is of my children and I, whom are the main reason I decided to produce a magazine. To be there for them as much as I can (sometimes this is a good thing, other times not, there is no escape arrrggghhh!!!). I hope each of you find something new from each issue. The work of the Land Management Committee of Loose Amenities

to protect them while they grow. This incidentally produces a safe haven for other wildlife.

Loose Amenities was set up many years ago to preserve Loose village. They also bought in excess of 20 acres of the Loose valley, a designated area of wildlife interest which also happens to be a very beautiful place.

Loose stream runs through the valley and has brown trout and bull heads; if you are quiet you may see kingfishers trying to catch a meal. It is pleasing that the stream also attracts grey herons and little egrets as well as cormorants among the many other birds that occur along the valley. We manage the stream by clearing surplus waterweed, debris and rubbish while other stretches of the stream need to be managed differently to encourage more water weed.

We, on the Land Management committee look after the valley land with the help of many volunteers who come along to our various work parties. We have one main work party on the third Sunday of every month and more recently we have been having a Tuesday work party. Our aim is to encourage a wide and diverse range of wildlife, flora and fauna by enhancing their habitats of which the valley has many different types. We also aim to improve accessibility to enable people to enjoy the valley. To this end we have improved the public footpaths by laying ragstone chippings where it is notoriously muddy. We have also made some “unofficial” paths to improve access for walkers to enjoy a wider valley. To maintain the diversity of plants we graze the valley with sheep, some areas we only graze in the winter and early spring to encourage meadow type wild flowers, other areas are grazed more intensively to allow pasture type plants to grow. This different management not only helps the plants but also birds and small animals by giving varied grassland habitats. To this end, the valley is divided by fencing with gates for pedestrian access. We have fenced some of the woodland to keep stock out in order to preserve the bluebells and other woodland plants. Since we fenced it, approximately three years ago, the bluebells and wood anemones are regenerating year on year. We are managing our woodland areas non intensively, thinning and removing dead trees as necessary. We are replacing lost trees with by planting new native trees and shrubs. We have planted saplings in small enclosures

Loose Village host Great British Spring Clean Residents of Loose Village are invited to help tidy up in a community event around the village on Saturday 8th April. Residents are asked to meet at the Loose Parish Pavilion in the King George V playing field at 2pm to get kitted out with litter pickers, gloves and Hi vis gilets. Memories of my Loose Childhood

I have seen a lot of changes in Loose and the surrounding areas in the 54 years I have lived here. In 1963 we became the proud owners of a newly built house, which actually seemed quite rare around here in those days. Now they are springing up everywhere, enabling new families to set up home. So obviously Loose infants/ juniors was the school of choice. I started there in about 1966 my birthday falls awkwardly within the school calendar, so I have

indignant memories of having to repeat a whole year at some point in the infants. To a kid of that age it’s a big deal as you watch your peers move up a class and leave you behind. I do actually still have memories of my first day I can see myself sitting at a desk and I enjoyed being there. However, come the next morning when I was told I had to go again, I was defiant that I didn’t have to as I had already been once.

On the whole I enjoyed school. Playtimes were spent with large groups of friends taking it in turns to swing a very long skipping rope for an excited queue of girls, desperate to jump in and take their spot without tripping up and stopping the momentum. French skipping was also a favourite, a strange game almost like “cat’s cradle” for the feet. Sport always seemed quite popular at the school. Rounders on the lower field, Netball in the playground and of course Sports day. Before the school had its large field at the back, it was held over in the King George V public playing field opposite. A highlight of going to school (from a child’s viewpoint) was being given a small amount of pocket money to spend in the shops around Loose. I liked to vary my choices. Sometimes I went into Hawthorn Stores, just a little way down from the school, which is now a private house. That glorious smell of sugar hit you when you went through the door. The sweets were displayed in the bay window, it seemed like a massive array of bubblegum and chocolate and sherbet fountains. I remember the elderly gentleman as being so patient with the hordes of kids who invaded his small shop twice a day. Across the road next to the Walnut Tree pub where the hairdressers is now was a grocery

shop. Children went in there as well to get their sugar fix. I recall having to ask for “The Penny Box” which was shoebox sized and placed on the counter for the child to rootle through and make their choice, I loved the drumstick lollies. Those were the days of the old money pennies, and if you had a couple of those you thought you were rich. In later years I ventured down to the Loose Post Office where they had large jars of loose sweets and you asked for a quarter. Their penny sweets were displayed in a small glass cabinet on the end of the counter and you pointed to what you wanted. I seem to remember again a glass case on

the wall containing all the little “Match Box” cars they sold, to the delight of the boys, who made their choice and handed over their pocket money. Baker’s store was back along the Loose road where Plonkers the off licence has just shut. This shop was a grocers almost like a little supermarket, and I often went in there armed with my Mum’s purse (with her knowledge) to buy a few bits and pieces for tea.

The Valley Conservation Society Held its annual general meeting on Saturday, February 18th. Around 45 members attended the event in the Eling Court Day Centre off Hilden Shaw on the Broadoak estate. They heard reports on the group’s activities during the past year: The Society owns Treacle Wood in the Loose Valley Conservation Area, as well as the Reeds and Lower Crisbrook Millponds. It also own Crisbrook Meadow jointly with Tovil Parish Council, and nominates three trusteess (out of nine) to the board of the Hayle Park Nature Trust.

The next fund-raising event will be a dance with live music from Five in the Bar and Unit 5, to be held at the Tovil Workingman’s Club in Tovil on Friday, April 28, starting at 8pm. Admission is £10, which will include a pizza supper. Further details about the Society, or tickets for the show, can be obtained from the secretary, Alan Smith, on 01622 751926 or email: a128smith@btinternet.com

The Society had spent £5,0545 on maintaining those areas over the past year, not counting the voluntary help of the regular Tuesday work party members. Nevertheless, thanks to donations, grants and fundraising, the Society had achieved a financial surplus of £626 on the year.
