Life at Cornwallis School in the 1970’s Boughton Quarries. We also had the sports hall, which had badminton courts and upstairs at each end had several table tennis tables. After all this exertion was the communal showers, I doubt they have those now. Oh and of course the open air swimming pool that I think I went in twice. At the bottom edge of the lower school grounds were “The hut classrooms” I quite liked being in those it felt like getting away from school, one of the lessons down there was learning about Horticulture.

A group of Sixth Formers at Cornwallis School in 1977

Driving past the Cornwallis Academy School my Husband and I remarked how different it is to when we were there. The 1970s was our hay day. I started there in 1973 (it opened in 1959). We had the original building and then the more modern extension to house the 3rd year pupils up to the 6th formers. For your first two years you were kept apart in the older section of the school from the “bigger kids.” I remember the Headmaster telling us this and then saying that by then we would be “big and ugly enough to look after ourselves”. The uniform was black/grey topped off with the black and green tie, which most of us only wore for the first couple of years at best. I kitted myself out with a briefcase in an attempt to look grown up, but was most peeved when my glass bottle of ink leaked all over the inside on the first day. Every morning we had to troop into the main hall for assembly, which consisted of a news bulletin speech from a teacher or Headmaster and usually rounded off with an unenthusiastic rendition of “All things bright and beautiful” or a similar hymn. Then it was off to classes for the day. We had Home Economics which involved teaching you to cook and how to clean household items. We were asked to bring in something from home to polish, I carted in a 14” square mirror! And I once made a very sloppy rice pudding and carried it home on the bus in its dish with no cover just sitting inside a biscuit tin. They were keen on teaching you to iron and use spray starch, if ever I smell that distinct aroma now it takes me back to those lessons.

From the 3rd year you moved up to the more modern part of the school where it seemed much more open plan. I did needlework, pottery and making things like jewellery out of sheets of Perspex. None of it very successful I might add, but I had a go. We learnt French and practiced our fluency by sitting in a room divided into single booths where you would put on headphones and read from a worksheet or book, the Teacher was able to listen in at random to the pupils to see how well they were doing. We didn’t use computers but they offered a subject called Business Studies, I think it involved pounding away on a big old manual typewriter and learning about bank statements. At the end of the year or Christmas they would let us have a school disco. This was a basic record player in the corner of the room, and all the kids sat around the edge looking embarrassed as The Bay City Rollers belted out the latest hit. Nobody ever wanted to be the first to get up and start the dancing off, how we would have managed to dance in some of the ridiculous shoes we wore is beyond me, I once owned a pair of platforms that weighed 1lb for each shoe! The two photos show a Home Economics class in 1959 the room looked the same when I was there 14 years later. And, a group of sixth formers in 1977 my Husband is the lad in the front row on the far left, loving the flares boys! by Debbie, Sheppey Road, Loose

I didn’t care much for PE, often being made to grab a hockey stick and whack a ball around the playing field, or on freezing cold mornings run half- heartedly around the edge of the field doing what they called “cross country”. Older pupils ran somewhere in the Loose Valley, possibly 6

News from North Loose Residents’ Association It was a hot day for the Boundary Walk but as you can see in the picture it was well attended. After a two hour walk everyone was ready for a cup of tea at the ever helpful Y Centre. We suspect that many of the people (and the dogs) were quite surprised to see the extent of the area North Loose covers.

After years of negotiating with MBC, we now know that the green area at the bottom of Richmond Way has been advertised via a public notice as “surplus to Council requirements” and consultation is now closed. This is the beginning of the legal process to transfer the land on lease to the NLRA so watch our notice boards and website for progress on this transaction. The Loose Ends committee have been putting in a lot of work to ensure plenty of activities for everyone. A talk by Polly Taylor, a founder of the Pickering Cancer Drop-in Centre in Tunbridge Wells was appreciated by the thirty three members at the last meeting. Future plans include an outing to Tenterden and at the next meeting 2nd August at the Y Centre there will be a Beetle Drive. The one after that will be on Wednesday 6th September. Also at the Y Centre on 12th August 1 00 – 4 00pm there is a Fun Day where the NLRA will have a cake stand. Our last Litter Pick focused on the Boughton Parade area and produced 28 bags of assorted rubbish. Next time we will be looking to tackle the area adjoining Armstrong Road. So if you live in the Lacock Gardens and Enterprise Road area, check our web site or the notice board as to when we will be there and perhaps you could come along and help too!

8

The lovely Loose Greenway is having a rather bad time at the moment. First the wild flowers were devastated by indiscriminate cutting; just recently a drain has overflowed covering the path with raw sewage. Prompt action by the NLRA ensured that Southern Water was quickly ‘on the case’ and we will be urging them to take action to resolve the problem permanently – it has occurred far too often. The Quiz Night is now confirmed – Saturday 28th October at Loose Junior School starting at 7 30 pm. We were delighted with the response we got from so many people to our last Quiz Night. We are sticking with our ‘winning format’ – a bottle of wine on each table, a (themed) music round and no raffle but a chance to win a more than useful cash prize. We have eighteen tables for teams of six but book soon! Last time we sold out very early and could have filled another four or five tables so please email seancarter@ northloose.co.uk or alan@northloose.co.uk as soon as you can. Finally, if you live in the Enterprise Road area do please get in touch. We have a notice board on the old Plumbase building to let you know what is going on but we would like your feed-back. Initially please e-mail alan@northloose.com and we’ll get somebody to get back to you.

Protecting your future property interests

You may have met the partner of your dreams and be in the lucky position to buy a new home with them, but how should the property be owned to protect your future interests? When you buy a new home, your solicitor will ask you how the property will be owned. There are two different sorts of joint ownership, Joint Tenancy and Tenancy in Common, so how do they differ and which type will suit your situation the best? 1. Joint Tenancy Where there is a joint tenancy, neither one of the co-owners will be entitled to a distinct or separate proportion of the property, each one effectively owns all of it. Of particular importance is the fact that where one of two joint tenants dies, his or her share will automatically pass to the survivor, irrespective of any wishes expressed in the deceased’s Will. Most married couples will tend to own property as joint tenants. 2. Tenancy in Common With this arrangement, each co-owner of the property holds a specified proportion of the interest in the property. On the death of a tenant in common, his or her share in the property will not pass automatically to the co-owner but will pass according to the wishes expressed in the deceased’s Will. If no Will exists, the interest will pass under the rules of intestacy, which means that it passes to the deceased’s next of kin which may not necessarily be the surviving owner of the property.

To avoid any possible disputes, it is always preferable that the shares of each co-owner be expressed and recorded in a separate document, known as a Declaration of Trust, which should normally be kept with the title documents of the property. Tenancies in Common are typically used where two or more persons buy a property and make unequal contributions towards the purchase price, perhaps because a parent has provided a significant cash advance for a deposit, or where one co-owner would not wish that person’s interest to pass automatically to the survivor on his or her death. This may happen for example if the person has a child/children from a previous relationship, whom they would like to benefit in the event of their death. It is important to take legal advice and to make and keep an up to date Will which reflects these wishes. Making sure there is a record of the beneficial interest you have in the property from the outset of the purchase and a record of what you should receive from the sale along with making sure you have an up to date Will on the completion of the property transaction should help ensure there are no squabbles about ownership in the future. Rina Pattar (Property Solicitor) can be contacted at r.pattar@gullands.com for all your property related queries. If you require advice with Wills please contact James Shiells on j.shiells@gullands.com or call the team at Maidstone 01622 689700 or Gravesend 01474 887688 www.gullands.com

About The Loose Amenities Association The Loose Amenities Association is a UK registered charity and owns 21 acres of the Loose valley. Run by volunteers, it is our mission to preserve and care for the beautiful and unique environment of Loose village and the Loose Valley Conservation Area. To fund this work numerous events are organised throughout the year. For more information, and to see what’s happening in 2017 please visit our Events page. To help maintain the valley, an organised working party meet once a month. Recent work included clearing vegetation on the main footpaths to encourage more interesting flora in the valley and for walkers, as well as maintaining the newly planted oak trees. A big thank you to all our volunteers. New posts have also been installed by the LAA along the edge of the open ragstone culvert in Old Loose Hill to preserve this ancient feature and the wild flower grass bank. The culvert was restored about five years ago in an initiative led by LAA and supported by Loose

Parish Council, Kent County Council and Maidstone Borough Council. There were similar open ditches and streams in most streets in the village until the late 1950s, this is now the only one still in original condition and in use, all of the others having been piped under the road, diverted or covered over. Over the winter you may have seen new fences going up throughout the valley to divide the land for grazing livestock. There is now a small flock of sheep in Lime Kiln Meadow, at the Bockingford end of LAA land. Please may we ask anyone accessing this land to respect the land owners request and keep ALL dogs on leads where signposted. There is an alternative route around the land if necessary. Please do post any images of the wildlife spotted in the valley on our Facebook page or instagram account where you can view them all. https://www. instagram.com/looseamenitiesassociation. the river It was so peaceful on , relaxed and we all felt calm and tranquil.

Kent’s best landscapers! Our results speak for themselves! You want the best? Call the best!

We were fortunate to take out Maidstone Belle, one of their silent picnic boats that seats up to 10 people. For half a day hire this costs £150 (only £15/person!) or a full day is £220 (I’m sure you can do the maths on this one). They are really easy to drive with just a forward and reverse leaver – much to my husband’s relief (I had to look after our children of course). Once on the boat everyone was having a good look around; a gas hob, running water, cups, plates and cutlery even a toilet. The children thought it was great having a toilet on a boat! You could sit outside of the boat at the front and rear and the middle was undercover with soft comfy seating. We all opted to sit outside as it was a sunny afternoon. Steve and Henry showed us how to steer

6 Weavering Cottages Weavering Maidstone T:07533 318 702 and control the boat and we were on our way. As E:charles@bentonlandscapes.co.uk W:bentonlandscapes.co.uk we departed Bev shouted out “you’ll see the river from a different perspective” and she was right. We all felt like we weren’t in Maidstone at all. It was so peaceful on the river and we all felt calm, relaxed and tranquil. As we sailed along we were all guessing where we were as you could see how lucky some of our residents are that have a big garden that backs onto the river. “This must be Tovil” my husband said, “No, it’s the back of College Road” my mum would say.
