Probate – where to start

Dealing with the loss of a loved one can be difficult enough, and this can be exceptionally challenging for estate executors who find themselves coping with bereavement whilst also making arrangements for the deceased’s estate. Probate is not simply a case of reading through the Will and handing assets out to their rightful beneficiaries. For estates worth more than £5,000, unless all assets were held in joint names and are passing to the surviving spouse or civil partner, estate executors may need a grant of representation before banks and financial institutions will allow them to access the deceased’s assets. Some financial institutions will release sums up to £50,000 without probate. It can be a long and tedious process and

estate executors must make sure that they follow the official procedure.

the deceased, only a Return of Estate Information form will need to be completed.

Before the estate can be valued all assets will need to be identified including bank accounts, vehicles, pensions, life insurance policies and any other belongings of value. Any property owned by the deceased will need to be valued by an Estate Agent or valuer and all financial assets, such as savings and investments, will need to be given a valuation on the date of death.

Completed forms will need to go to the Probate Registry and HMRC, the estate executor will then have to pay any Inheritance Tax and also swear an oath before they are issued with a grant of representation and the assets can be released.

Mortgages, credit cards, loans and personal debts, and funeral expenses will also need to be accounted for as these will all need to be settled out of the deceased’s estate before any assets can be passed to the beneficiaries. Once the total worth of the estate has been calculated, Inheritance Tax forms will need to be completed. These will need to be done even if the estate value falls under the £650,000 threshold and there is no tax owed. For estates where the value is less than twice the Inheritance Tax threshold and where 100 per cent of unused Inheritance Tax from a late spouse or civil partner can be transferred to

Being an estate executor is no simple task. Getting access to the assets can be time consuming, especially if the deceased did not keep sufficient records. But this is only the first hurdle and estate executors must go on to divide the assets amongst beneficiaries. Another lengthy task that can be further complicated by complex family situations and potential Will disputes. For advice on the Probate process, estate administration and Inheritance Tax, Alexander Astley can be reached at a.astley@gullands.com or 01622 689700 or visit www.gullands.com

Holidaying in the UK or abroad, how to avoid Bed bugs!

Bed bugs live on or in mattresses, check the seams for any spots or stains, often at the corners or along the edge where your head rests. If you see any suspicious signs, demand a change of room, your money back or look for alternative accommodation. Do not stay in that room or the chances are you may be bitten. In any accommodation the most likely place to find bedbugs is in the bedroom. Inspect the room thoroughly, before unpacking, paying special attention to looking behind the headboard, bedside cabinets and on the carpet or flooring immediately under the top or the bed. Also, if you have chairs or sofas in the room, inspect these too.

an infestation is spreading to neighbouring rooms, it is often in those closest to the source. Be vigilant and inspect hotel rooms close to airports. These are often full all year round with people staying for just one night before flying away; their high occupancy rates means bed bugs are very common in these establishments. Remember, any accommodation is susceptible to bed bugs, other people inadvertently carry them in, and most hotels have suffered from them at some stage. My top tip is do none of these things, the chances of you being in the same room as a few bedbugs is statistically small and therefore you should not be worried (unless you wake up with a bug on you or see signs of biting on your body)! Enjoy your winter breaks and remember that if you do bring them back to Kent, Pest Purge has the knowledge and expertise to get rid of them for you. Night night, sleep tight and don’t let the bed bugs bite!

bombing the BBQ and searching out a nice cold Magners to quench their thirst. Worse still if they happen to take a serious dislike to you and actually sting you, just the ticket to spoil a summer garden party. We can come along and move them on, whoever has overstepped the mark, Pest Purge have the technology, the wit and charm to remove them safely without a fuss, keeping your event pest free. It must work; no pest that we have ever expelled has complained! We are tolerant of small disturbances but will intervene when insects get out of hand. If you have a Pest call Pest Purge (small kids excluded)!

In hotels, use the foldaway table, unpack your case off the floor, stow it away in a wardrobe or high off the floor. There will be less chance a wandering bug will inadvertently stow away with you when you pack to return home. Or take a dustbin-bag with you and put your case in this whist you are away.

News from North Loose Residents’ Association At the ‘Loose Ends’ November meeting, 40 people were given an excellent demonstration of seasonal floral arranging by florist Jackie Brooks. One of the arrangements was later the prize of a free raffle. The winner immediately promised to donate it to Loose Parish Church. Following a coffee break members took part in a fun quiz to conclude the afternoon. Our Quiz Night was a great success. Loose Junior School Hall was full to capacity with over a hundred of our erudite members and friends ‘fighting it out’ through eight rounds of questions. Robert Newberry’s team were worthy winners but it was all very tight – three teams were equal second just one point behind and three more teams were one point behind them! The quiz did exactly what we hoped it would do; everyone enjoyed a good social evening and it added a useful amount of money to the NLRA funds. We have personally thanked all the individuals and local businesses who supplied some really wonderful prizes for the raffle. With the birds now grown and flown we are able to get back into our Ancient Woodland – Mangravat Wood – and continue with the ongoing task of bringing it back to its former glory. Old concrete posts which once formed part of a chain link fence have now been removed. A large Sweet Chestnut tree which had become uprooted and was leaning at a dangerous angle over the fence of Five Acre Wood School had to be felled by professional tree surgeons. Most of it was recycled, the large logs becoming a habitat pile in the school’s wild life garden; the smaller branches were shredded and given to South Park allotments.

The planters on Boughton Parade…… you will have noticed are conspicuous by their absence. This has been a most frustrating experience. We felt that the planter that is sitting there now in splendid isolation was perfectly satisfactory and agreed that another five should be ordered immediately. Unfortunately the supplier was unable to deliver any more until the New Year. Another planter was chosen but as it was somewhat smaller than our original choice, we needed one extra and had to re-plan the whole scheme. Superficially they looked attractive but in reality they were very poor quality. After wasting hours trying to assemble just two of them while re-drilling holes, repairing broken dowels and much more, the company was asked to take them back and reimburse us in full. That part at least, was successful. We have now found another planter. It looks good, it is the right size and we can buy and they can deliver, as many as we need. With a bit of luck they should all be in place before Christmas. And that is it for 2017 – another year that seems to have gone by in the proverbial ‘blink of an eye’. From the North Loose Residents’ Association committee we wish all readers of ‘Life in Loose’ a Very Happy Christmas and a peaceful and enjoyable New Year.

The area to the south of the main path through the woods should be clear of brambles by the end of our next session – don’t forget to come along and join us on first Saturday of the month – which should ensure that the bluebell display of 2018 will be even more spectacular. 16

JLM Network Services JLM Network Services was started by its owner, James McNicol ten years ago, focussing on providing excellent computer and network support to customers within the Maidstone area. The key factor of the business is carrying out the service at the customer’s home or work premises, removing the equipment only if major work is required in order to keep costs down.

JLM Network Services

Since July, the business has undergone a major overhaul. It now covers the whole of Kent and most services are offered at a fixed price, no matter how long they take to complete. This enables customers to know how much their repairs will cost, giving peace of mind that the repair will not exceed their budget.

Loose Amenities Association We have seen a wealth of visitors to the village this year - attending the numerous fundraising events organised by the Loose Amenities Association (LAA), including the Easter Egg Hunt, Annual Duck Race, Teddy Bear Picnic and the Frank and Dean Ratpack evening. Recently, the LAA hosted its annual Senior Citizens Tea Party for the local community - Mick Abbott provided the entertainment whilst guests tucked into sandwiches, cream teas and cake. Our next community event is Carols around the Tree which will take place at Tylers on Kirkdale from 7pm on Wednesday 13th December. A brass band led by Mick Abbott will be playing your favourite Carols, and there will be mince pies and mulled wine - so please just turn up and sing!! The land management team has also had another busy year working in the valley, holding monthly and weekly working parties throughout the year – rain or shine. Recent work in the valley has included clearing overgrowth on the main footpaths to encourage more interesting flora in the valley and for walkers, as well as the planting of new oak trees. We have worked hard to improve the flow of the stream through the valley by cutting and removing collapsed trees and pruning where necessary and we have seen a strong improvement to habitat that has benefited trout in particular. Another new fence, gate and kissing gate has gone up between Rainbow meadow and Dog Kennel hill; this new area will now be referred to as Roy’s meadow. Fences in the valley enable us to control the grazing of livestock more efficiently, as well as provide areas for off lead dog walking. We have suffered some incidents of dog worrying across the year but recently matters have improved, so many thanks to everyone for keeping dogs on leads where signposted.

you can view them at https://www.instagram.com/ looseamenitiesassociation. We are incredibly indebted to our volunteers and would like to thank them for their continued enthusiasm and commitment to maintaining the valley, including those who are always there providing wonderful sweet and savoury treats for coffee time. We are very lucky that our members continue to oversee the valley on almost daily basis, for example, checking on the sheep, fences and gates and stepping in to solve problems such as fallen trees, to keep the valley safe. If you would like to get involved, working parties will take place each month, and dates can be found on our facebook page. For information about becoming a member of the Loose Amenities Association, please visit http://www. loose-amenities.org.uk/getting-involved/

Carols around the Tree Wednesday 13th December 2017 in the garden of Tylers, Kirkdale, Loose Traditional Christmas carols accompanied by a brass band, hot mince pies and mulled wine make this a wonderful way to start the Christmas holiday

Starts at 7.00pm

The continued efforts to nurture a broader range of flora and support mammals, birds and invertebrates has continued to be successful. Please do continue to post any images of the wildlife spotted in the valley on our Facebook page or instagram account where
