• The credibility of the NLRA with Maidstone Borough Council has risen sharply since the completion and overwhelming acceptance of our Neighbourhood Plan

• The SMART (South Maidstone Action for Roads and Transport) group is now regarded by KCC as a source of innovative and practical ideas. • The NLRA Planning Group successfully fought off a proposal to build 220 houses in Boughton Lane. • North Loose Ltd (the land holding company for the NLRA) continues to look after Mangravat Wood – do walk up there and see the bluebells. They should be at their best by the time you read this. The green in Richmond Way will be handed over to us soon on a long lease to manage and maintain. • A motion submitted to increase the membership subscription to £10.00 per household was approved by ballot. The result was 77 for and 3 against.

Come and meet the NLRA committee outside the Boughton Parade shops on 20th May between 9.30 and 1.00 pm and we’ll tell you about all the things we do for the area and how we do it. Join us for a boundary walk – it’s about 4 miles – on Saturday 8th July. We start at the Y Centre at 2.00pm. We’ve just held our first ‘Loose Ends’ club meeting on 10th April. Sixty three people turned up (which slightly took us by surprise as we thought it would be about 40!) A committee was formed, lots of suggestions were made for future activities and many new friendships were made. It seemed to be a great success. We also hold Quiz Nights. One lucky member won £125.00 with ticket number ‘5’ in our special SMARTIE tube draw. Look out for the next quiz towards the end of October

The Loose Spring Clean On Saturday April 8th, twenty-two volunteers from the local community, gave up their time to help pick up litter in Loose. The litter-pick ‘heroes’ included three children who wanted to help clean up their local environment, several householders from the local area and a number of parish council members and exmembers. Twenty one bags of rubbish were collected. Following the litter-pick, volunteers returned to the pavilion for well-deserved refreshments, provided by the Loose Parish Council. The litter pickers, hi-vis vests, gloves and refuse sacks were provided by Maidstone Borough Council.

Surprise increase in Probate fees surprisingly dropped It is of course always good to keep your affairs up to date and if you don’t have a Will or haven’t updated it for some time, or have had life events happen, such as marriage, divorce, the birth of children or grandchildren, then it is worth taking the time to look at it.
Writing in last month’s edition of Life in Loose I looked at the surprise announcement from the 2017 spring budget on the rise in probate fees. This rise on a sliding scale was due to come into force in early May, but it has now been put on hold indefinitely due to the other surprise announcement of the month, the general election on June 8th. Depending on the outcome of the election, it is something which may reappear and professionals like me will be watching ‘this space’ with interest. The position therefore remains that probate fees are capped at £215 or £155 if the application is made through a solicitor, regardless of the size of the estate.
It is also worth noting that many people will now be taken out of the Inheritance Tax threshold due to the new residence nil rate band, which came into force on 5 April 2017. Each individual can now claim an additional allowance of £100,000 to offset the sale of a family home on death, on top of their existing £325,000 inheritance tax exemption. By 2020 and assuming there are no major election result surprises, this will rise to £175,000 allowing a couple to pass on £1 million estates tax free.
I said last month that the only two things in life of which we can all be certain are death and paying taxes, however the uncertainty of the decisions of government means even that is now not true. I can confidently predict however that the issue of tax will feature one way or the other in the forthcoming election campaigns and that post June 8th, there will be further changes that we all have to get to grips with. These new rules need careful reading as this new allowance is only available if the property has been the person’s main residence at some point and is being inherited by children stepchildren, adopted children or grandchildren. The new rate will not apply if property is left to nieces, nephews, brothers or sisters. It is also not available if the property is being left in Trust.

The Romney Restaurant at Mote House, Mote Park I f you’re looking for a restaurant in a remote setting and conveniently close by, then you need to book a table at The Romney Restaurant.

Located in the picturesque grounds of Mote Park, The Romney Restaurant is in Mote House amongst Audley Retirement Village. The Romney Restaurant is open to the general public. Older children are allowed at the restaurant but as this establishment is a place to escape it is a place where you leave the little ones with a babysitter and enjoy an evening of “adult time” (which we most definitely all need from time to time!).
During our visit they were serving the Dinner Menu. For starters choices included Kent wood pigeon, Roasted red pepper soup, Rye Bay scallops. We were spoilt for choice for mains; Saddle of rabbit filled with a wild mushroom mousse, Shin of Bearsted beef, Hastings brill pan seared with lemon butter to name just a few.
You enter the restaurant from Willington Street and follow the signs to the visitors carpark. The restaurant is only a short stroll away. We received a warm welcome by all the staff when we entered the Bistro. Here meals are also served but it is also a lounge where you can stop by anytime and have coffee. The decor of this place is simply stunning. Traditional, yet modern at the same time. Contemporary colours, chandeliers, beautiful fabrics and one of my favourites in the main restaurant, white crisp table cloths laid with shiny cutlery and shiny glasses! The Romney Restaurant has a selection of menus available which are developed by the new Head Chef Jamie Down. Menus include; Dinner menu, Audley
Tony opted for the scallops whilst I tucked into Chef’s homemade bread served with butter, oil and vinegar. For main I chose Shin of Bearsted Beef served with a herb dumpling, confit carrot puree, port and beef sauce.

A little breather after main with attentive service by Reece the restaurant manager checking if we would like to order any more drinks and then onto dessert. Chocolate and blood orange cheesecake, Pimm’s Eton Mess, Lemon Posset, but my eyes kept going back to the Chocolate and blood orange cheesecake. My husband said “I’ll just have a bit of yours”. However when it arrived and I took the first mouthful I thought “no chance!”. It was absolutely delicious. Tea and coffee with speciality coffees are on offer to finish with a suggested digestif Disaronno. The menu read “Why not end with an Amaretto-Liqueur with its unique characteristic almond taste”. Why not!
I overheard a lady say “The scallops were the best I’ve ever tasted” If you have not paid a visit to this beautiful establishment, please call now and reserve a table. Remember you do not have to have dinner, just pop along to enjoy a coffee or tea in tranquil surroundings. All the staff are very friendly and will make you feel at home. Davina McCall headlines the Wealden Times Midsummer Fair and tickets are selling fast Tickets are selling fast for this year’s Wealden Times Midsummer Fair, which runs for 3 days, from 8th - 10th June at the magnificent Hole Park Estate, near Tenterden. Over 250 exhibitors set in a breath-taking location. Every stand holder is handpicked for their high quality, original, contemporary and vintage designs in homeware, fashion, gifts, jewellery, gardening products, plants and more. When it’s time to refuel, visitors can sit and enjoy artisanroasted coffee, Kentish bubbly and a wide range of delicious dishes from local and international street-food vendors, while they soak up the atmosphere with friends and family. The Healthy Living Festival is attracting big name speakers from the worlds of fitness, nutrition and relaxation. Those fortunate to attend can hear from well-loved TV personality and advocate of a healthy lifestyle, Davina McCall, whose sugar-free recipes are becoming firm family favourites. Madeleine Shaw, healthy eating guru extraordinaire will pass on her philosophy for creating delicious, nutritious, affordable and simple to make healthy food. Local personal trainer and Matt Robert's senior trainer Sarah Jane Holt will
also be sharing her ‘Healthy habits for busy mums’ in the Healthy Living Theatre sponsored by Benenden Hospital.
