At a time where the world is going against culture and abandoning the need for diversity in the world, we want to dedicate this issue to our love for what others can offer. Asia is a place of divine intervention and their minimalism and sophistication in both their fashion and way of life is something we respect and desire to learn from. The research undertaken for this issue has made it clear to us exactly how much of Asian heritage we adopt into our lifestyles and we believe it is time to celebrate it. ENJOY!

PEARLY
WONG THE INDUSTRIAL R E V O L U T I O N
After debuting its Spring/Summer 2016 collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin, high fashion brand Pearly Wong has certainly got our attention. After studying in New York City, growing up in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and honing the multi-influenced brand from her Berlin base, Pearly has become the designer to watch and her industrial inspired collection of late is no exception. We caught up with Pearly to discuss brand aesthetics and ideals, how it all began and how life in Berlin has influenced those all-important design choices.
TCL: Your eponymous label officially came onto the scene back in 2012, why did you decide to start your own brand?
PW: I was first introduced to the world of design during my childhood thanks to my parents’ kidswear business. It was all very interesting to me, and from design to production and marketing to distribution, I was hooked. After graduating from FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology), I thought the only step next was to start the Pearly Wong label. Since its launch Pearly Wong has been very well received by the fashion scene in general especially in Germany due to our designs having that industrial look that goes with the environment and lifestyle. The Berlin community seems to relate more to my pieces. TCL: How has your own personal style and Berlin life in particular influenced the design choices that sit at the heart of your environmentally-conscious, dark and androgynous brand?
PW: I find that my designs resonate a lot with Berlin and the wider European contemporary style, which is monochromatic, and practical yet stylish. Berlin’s contemporary lifestyle has influenced my designs a lot in terms of construction, which has been a great experience.
TCL: Your previous collection took influence from the decline of the environment, how has this source of inspiration evolved to shape your new collection?
TCL: Are you currently designing your next collection? If PW: My previous collection and so can you give us an the upcoming collection still insight into what we can revolve around the same theme look forward to? and concept as I personally relate PW: There will be many multi strongly to this particular subject functional garments as always matter. Our team has been making and you will see a lot of playing efforts to raise awareness about around with shapes, focusing environmental health through our more on manipulation in pattern operations, design and production cutting. Whilst we are currently processes. In terms of design, Pearly still in the process of bringing our Wong will still be presenting next collection together, you can our staple multifunctional stay up-to-date with the latest at wear with geometric Pearly Wong by following us on Instagram or Facebook. shapes and drapes. TCL: Your brand is known for creating convertible utilitarian clothing, any advice for our readers on how key style staples can translate from SS16 to FW16 and beyond? PW: The main reason for my designs being multifunctional and convertible is so that the people who wear them are able to express themselves the
way they want to, in their own special way. It would be quite easy for the wearers to mix and match and have some fun wearing my designs as they are all fluid and not very restricted in terms of style.

DESIGNER FOCUS - FABITORIA -
Fashion that nods to different cultures, speaks volumes of its origin, history and inspiration, so that buying a garment tells you so much about the designer and their background. Fabitoria is a Taiwanese label that was created at the hands of Fabiana Chang and Victoria Kao in 2012. These two young, aspiring designers created the label as an outlet that could satisfy their imaginations, a place where they could create fun, original and wild designs. Their talent lay specifically in creating exquisite printed skirts, which quickly caught the attention of fashion blogger, Susie Bubble, alongside many other fashion publications. Fashionista.com labelled them as an emerging Asian brand to watch and the fashion director of Style.com stated them as her favourite brand at the Blueprint Singapore Tradeshow in 2014.
After a copious amount of press attention, Fabitoria grew into a sought after label that created elegant garments that nodded to Taiwanese heritage. Featuring structured silhouettes, crisp lines and a clean colour palette, their ability to lead a cool, unconventional and free-thinking world, makes them a brand you need in your wardrobe, for that quintessential essence of Asia.

THE SECRET TO EATING HOME COOKED FOOD, WITHOUT BEING AT HOME. RYUJI discredits the belief
“
THERE IS NO PLATE LIKE HOME
”
The authenticity and simplicity of traditional home cooked meals cannot be beaten, especially after a long, intense day at work. We often crave familiarity within our food but the time spent to make traditional dishes has left many people seeking for a restaurant that offers homecooked dishes from a certain heritage. This has quickly adapted into a new trend that has made itself apparent throughout 2016. In Seoul sits Ryuji, a restaurant that lends itself to Korean cuisine and is believed to be the perfect balance between Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese, seemingly the next Asian cuisine that will be considered mainstream. Ryuji owns an interesting approach to the variety of dishes each person craves to consume throughout the week: the only constant is rice, cooked on the spot and served in an iron pan. The rest of the ingredients change on a daily basis, but the ‘plat du jour’ can be found on the restaurant’s Instagram profile, posted every day. By choosing a home-cooked meal with a harmonious match between a selection of cuisines, you are fulfilling your appetite with the traditional taste of home.

THE ONES TO KNOW Aiting LU | STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHY | Spéos Photographic Institute, Paris, France
After graduating from Istituto Marangoni where Aiting studied fashion styling, her desire to be involved in art direction grew. It seemed obvious to Aiting that Spéos was the only place to study studio photography, a course that requires skill, precision, focus and a creative eye. Learning photography systematically at Spéos allows her to open her eyes to things she was yet to see and allows her to think comprehensively. Studio photography has the ability to create images that are raw and hold impact and emotion, something that Aiting values in her work, and the reason why we wanted to speak to her and find out more about her work. What are your influences and inspirations that led you to Studio Photography? After having 3 years of experience in fashion styling and working as an assistant to an art director at Numero China, it became obvious to me that my goal was to become an art director myself. Therefore, I studied photography in order to gain experience and knowledge. After I started styling for the photo shoots inspired by Irving Penn, Nick Knight and Tim walker, I found myself always looking for ways to introduce creative elements into my work. The postproduction is very important in my creative process: I am playing with pictures thanks to graphic effects and handmade manipulation. My work has maintained being not only artistic but also more original and surrealistic.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time and hope for within your career? For now, I’m really motivated with photography, but after graduating I might intern at a production company or go back to work in magazine. On the other hand, If there are some opportunities, why not open my own direction company?
What do you like and dislike about the industry you are in? I love everything related to fashion. I started to collect fashion magazines and cut out the pictures I liked and stuck them on my notebook at secondary school, and the passion started from there. However, what I dislike in this industry is the inability to have a stable schedule, nor enough free time to plan anything outside of work.
