Welcome to our Spring 2013 season programme As always, we have lots in store for you this season, with a lively programme including dance, music, theatre and story-telling events. It’s always good to start the year off with a culturally enriching experience and Sikh Fortress Turban at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery promises to be just that. We’re delighted to be working in partnership with BMAG, as part of this free exhibition, which offers a fascinating insight into a distinctive symbol of Sikh heritage and examines why the turban remains important to modern-day Sikhs. We continue to champion local and emerging talent in February and April. Our Dance Sabha, Southern Bells, in partnership with mac birmingham, features beautiful classical dance from the Southern regions of India and our annual showcase, Asian Spring, throws a spotlight again on some of the best dance talent in our region. More established talents take to the stage later in the season, when the Bollywood Showstoppers arrive in Birmingham, for a celebrity-filled musical dance extravaganza with Bollywood stars Bipasha Basu, Malaika Arora and Atif Aslam. The vibrant Spring Festival of Holi will be the inspiration for music, story-telling and dance in March, as we join Surdhwani and Arena Theatre, Wolverhampton to welcome the colour & vitality of the new season. Mid-day Mantra A free monthly series presenting music from India to uplift the spirit on Saturday lunchtimes. 19 January Deepa Nair Rasiya Deepa’s soul-stirring vocals have featured on numerous albums worldwide including George Harrison and Ravi Shankar’s Chants of India. Hear her perform North Indian classical and folk songs, accompanied by Manjeet Singh Rasiya on tabla.

16 February Salim Sabri A former student of legendary singer Haji Maqbool Ahmed Sabri (Sabri Brothers), Salim will perform the traditional art of Qawwali, a form of Sufi devotional music, along with his group. 23 March Sanyogita Kumari Vocalist Sanyogita performs classically-based popular Hindi film songs and qawwalis accompanied by Dr Amrita Srivastav (vocals), Babar Hussain (harmonium & vocals) and Harjinder Matharu (tabla). 20 April Kirpal Singh Panesar Regarded a rising star in the UK today, Kirpal has won wide acclaim for his skilled performances using the Tar-Shehnai and the Dilruba, two traditional and unique Indian string instruments.

Sikh Fortress Turban exhibition at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery A Spotlight Loan from the British Museum The magnificent fortress turban is a distinctive symbol of Sikh faith and history. It was worn by skilled Sikh warriors called Akali Nihangs, who used it to hold their weaponry. This exhibition will explore the story of this rare example of a ‘dastaar boonga’, literally meaning a ‘towering fortress’, with contributions from Birmingham’s Sikh community. As part of the exhibition, there will be an informal session on Saturday 27 April, 2-4pm examining textiles and their use in a cultural context. Free admission. Dance Sabha – Southern Bells Sabha is sampad’s popular showcase for local and emerging talent in music, dance, theatre and spoken word. This evening’s show features the beautiful forms of classical South Indian dance. Kopal Vedam will perform Kuchipudi dance from Andhra Pradesh, known for its graceful movements and strong narrative/ dramatic character and students from Chitraleka Dance Company will present striking Bharatanatyam originating from Tamil Nadu. Our workshops around the Holi and Vaisakhi Festivals (taking place in March & April respectively) use South Asian artforms to celebrate the new life, energy and colours of Spring.
Sampad is currently offering workshops aimed at helping artists/creative educators to develop and prepare their work with schools.
Other workshops on offer this season include: • Creative writing: Improving English through poetry and short stories inspired by Rabindranath Tagore, a hugely influential Bengali poet and writer who won a Nobel Prize for Literature • Digital: film-making and photography exploring themes around cultural identity • Early Years: Lori (lullabies), music, movement and storytelling engaging children and families, and Early Years practitioners.
All participants will be registered onto sampad’s artist pool for delivering workshops in schools during 2013 and will receive practical & useful information to take away on the day.
