The Reformation – Luther, Henry VIII and the Pope
England had been Catholic for over 1000 years. In the early 1500s people began to say the Catholic church was too rich. Money was spent on fine clothes/palaces, not on the poor. The Bible was in Latin. Priests were corrupt. Indulgences – people could pay to have sins forgiven. In 1517 Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to church door in Germany starting the Protestant Reformation. Henry VIII wrote a book defending Catholic faith. But in 1536 Henry VIII did a U-turn and replaced the Pope as Head of the Church in England.
