WEEK 9 READING: PERSPECTIVE AS SYMBOLIC FORM

Question 1: What are Durer’s rules for perspectival projection? (Maximum 100 words) Durer’s rules can be interpreted into three principles. Firstly, the perpendiculars meet at the same vanishing point. Secondly, the parallels also share a same vanishing point, regardless the directions they point at. And finally, equal dimensions would vanish progressively as that recede in the space, so that all the parts in the picture could be formed from the point.

Question 2: Describe homogenous space? (Maximum 100 words)

Homogenous space is a mathematical space which is unlike the structure of psychophysiological space. All its elements which are joined in it are mere determinations of position, possessing no independent content of their own outside of this relation and position which they occupy in relation to each other.

QUAD PERSPECTIVE 1 + 2 Perspective 1 I have chosen this perspective of the quad as this looks like a corner in the street of my city. So that I can add in citizens walking down the street, to create the routine of the residents and the feeling of colourless and invariability of this city.

Perspective 2 This perspective is to show the vista view alone the street in my city. As the columns on the sides of the quad become smaller when approaching the vanishing point of the vista, this creates the length of the two sides of the streets. The only character on one side of the street would introduce a feeling of solitude, which corresponds with the story by Calvino.

PERSPECTIVE SCENE 1 + 2

Perspective 1 This scene is at a corner of the street which corresponds with the “past” of the city in the story. In this city, “what seemed normal is now an oddity”, so the regular passers-by on the street have displayed the “normal routine”. And the angel at the back of the scene shows the “oddity”.

Perspective 2 This scene happens at the “present”, which is along the side of the street as the background show the vista view of the city. The anger in the middle of this scene displays a contrast between “bizarre” and “usual”, when putting the two scenes together.

WEEK 10 READING: MAPPING THE UNMAPPABLE Complete your reading before attempting these questions:

Question 1: IWhat is the difference between autographic and allographic practice? (Maximum 100 words) Autographic practice is the art which has direct contact with the author. It depends on the intervention of the artist, such as paintings and sculptures. Allographic practice, however, does not require the direct intervention of the artist. They usually exist in many copies, such as music and poetry.

Question 2: Why do architects need new representational techniques? (Maximum 100 words) Representation techniques are used by architects to record their ideas and innovations. New representational techniques allow architects to deal with the complexity of the architecture, and the advancement of the construction technologies.

Perspective 2

The quadrangle is used to show the streets in my city, as the citizens walk along the street aimlessly. This city used to be colorless without any characteristics, however, “something unmistakable, rare, perhaps magnificent” could happen in the street sometimes. The two perspectives have shown this conflict between “colorless” and the “magnificent”.
