Korean Culture Centre UK Present From the Past

The Korean Culture Centre UK and the British Korean Veterans Association (BKVA) organized an auction for donated artwork by Korean artists about the Korean war and its impact on society. The preview and exhibition lasted during the days of Monday 4th until Friday 8th of October 2010. It was placed in the exhibition space in the Korean Culture Centre to show gratitude towards the British Veterans for their help in the Korean War. The silent auction was made on Friday 8th and Monday 11th of October on the donated artwork.

Artwork

40 artists were commissioned to create or choose from previous any type of artwork with mixed types of media (sculpture, photogrpahy, painting..etc), making 40 pieces of individual artwork for the exhibition. All the artwork was very individual showing each artist’s personal perspective on the matter.

Lighting

The lighting was based on several Flourescent lighting bulbs as well as Upper lighting (lightbulbs).

Advertising

The exhibition was advertised through several english and korean national news broadcasts such as BBC or YTN. Newspaper adverts were placed in several Korean and English journals and the Korean Culture Centre’s website was used to advertise the event. Also huge windows towards the streets showing most of the artwork and 15 flatscreen TV’s made it possible for people passing by could notice the exhibition, although it wasnt very clear what the purpose of the exhibition was from outside. The event was sponsored by Sotheby’s + BKVA and the market was very exclusive, as there were selective invitations for the event, yet the entrance was free for anyone passing by. Stationary consisted of posters, postcards and catalogues.

Signage

The signage inside the exhibition was clear and well designed using typefaces such as Rockwell and ITC Machine. There was labelling of each piece of work and instructions for the auction on the sheet of paper

Event (Auction Day)

There was individual assistance for help in understanding the artwork throughout the whole night. The event was covered from Korean Broadcasting networks with 3 cameras and 1 photographer recording the event and the artwork. Also a BBC anchor acted as Host of the event (Mishal Husain) Around 60 People attended on the first Auction day and RVSP was required for entrance. Catering was included (Drinks and small korean dishes made by famous chef in Korea) and some artists attended the event. There were individual speeches from British Veterans, the curator and the Korean representative of the Korean war soldiers. A video explaining the event, the participants and relevant information was shown throught the event and there were always various staff members available for help.


Exhibtion Deconstruction

Analysis

In General terms the exhibition was a success. All of the work was sold and the event seemed to run smoothly, the artwork was clearly labelled and the signage was loud and clear, helping visitors know what the exhibition was about, and what they were supposed to do about it. Staff seemed more like salesmen trying to upsell the artwork, helping it’s price to rise by informing the viewers about the insights of the artwork. It seems like the main purpose of the exhibition is to sell the artwork at the highest price possible so the maximum amount of money could be raised for the KBVA. At the same time Korean Art could have been promoted to a much more broader public, due to its location right next to Trafalgar Square. This could have been done by putting some Vynil lettering on the windows facing the main street. Its a great way to show there is something going on inside the installations and attracts the attention to the public. It will not only get more visitors on the exhibition, but also increase the popularity of the Korean Cultural Centre UK, which is unknown to most of the non-korean community, and some of the numerous koreans currently in London.

Proposal

It was very hard to find something that needed improvement for the exhibition, as it had been carried on in a very well organized and proffesional manner. If I could have changed something was on the signs in the windows. The entrance for the exhibition was never clear and I didn’t know what the exhibition was about unitl I figured out inside. Therefore, I would have recommended the use of vynil signage on the windows, so that the immense window spaced is used in a more productive way. The lack of signage on it was a bit of a dissapointment, but nonetheless, the rest of the exhibition and event was executed in a near perfect way.

Johannes Von Stumm

Johannes Von Stumm is a sculptor mostly acclaimed for the combination of different material and media in his work. His work has attracted people all around the world, specially in Britain, where he has held up multiple exhibitions of his work. By joining different medias as iron glass, granite, stone, steel or wood in his sculpture, he has challenged pre-accepted ideas, managing to harmonize the union of totally different materials into one sculpture. With the fusion of materials, he reaches a form of expression, as he does by joining soft with hard materials, fragile with strong, liquid with solid, or dark with transparent. He shows how two,three or four totally different subjects can withstand with each other, making a new piece of art. His work not only contains the feeling of challenge, but also the spirituality of meaning and purpose. Every single piece of art has a meaning and the power with which he expresses such meaning is outstanding in its own way, a clear message no one could miss to feel or understand.

Proposal

As I looked at several different Land Artists I had found Johannes von Stumm’s work to reflect the sense of unity and harmony the AVA building needed. The feeling of a building in which all the different colours and shades of visual art and architecture are together under one single roof. So I decided to use four different materials for each wall of the AVA building. This way the building itself will be a clear message of how completely different subjects get together in harmony to form a perfect artistic and visual enviroment.

10 The AVA (Architecture and Visual Arts) Building in the University of East London is where all the creative arts come together inside a whole building. Here, students from any branch of design can find each others work within the same roof and at the same time exchange ideas. The only problem was the lack of signage and navigation through the building. A visitor would never know where to find different areas of the building, and therefore one cannot make proper use of the divversity of creative branches. We decided to tackle

this problem through the use of colour coding and a system of lines in the floor which would take the viewer to all the different areas of the building. Unfortunately, we decided that this idea was too ambicious for the amount of budget we had thought of. We had gone very far on the research and planning stage with this concept, which took us several weeks,and we were about to trash it. It was a hard decision, but we could make use of it for the concepts that were going to follow the current one.

A Different Approach

The idea behind the concepts were the notion of unity while still, being in a completely different course range, so that there could be an exchange of ideas and a mixture of media throughout the whole of AVA. The concept that better matched this background was this one, where the acronym ‘AVA’ would break up in several different parts, so that each course would have a different shape and colour that would repreresent them. At the same time, it represents a notion of unity, and group, where altogether would form the whole of AVA.

Red Studio Branding

Red studio was set up by students and tutors as a way of getting real experience on how a studio would run in the professional way. We wanted to deliver high quality design work for the university as well as external clients, yet with the freshness ambition and originality of university students. Initiated by our tutor Pete Nevin, we were set to start off by designing the brand itself. The concept was chosen to be a very cubic as it resembled the room the studio was based on. After several important decisions we had chosen our main logo as well as its usages on general stationary.

The AVA alumni event was the first job commissioned to the Red Studio. The brief was to design the signage and navigation of the venue. We had visits to the venue, and made some research and concept presentations. The final concept was based on Google Maps push pins as a way to mark places. Also, we had some work we had done for the AVA signage and decided to use the pictograms one of our members had made. These, were made of MDF, which were lasercut and spraypainted so they could be stuck on the walls of the venue, and finally used glowsticks so that the light would glow from behind. 2

We were also asked to make the catalogue for the event, as well the main banner that would be placed in the entrance of the event. As our first job, we were very eager to advertise ourselves, as a new rising design agency. We had thought that if we did well on this event, we could get commissioned somewhere else. We had written our mission statement, painted it in and showed it on the entrance. Througout the night we had made our own Red Studio t-shirts and business cards were given away as a way to self-promote ourselves.

VALENCE EXHIBITION In the Year Ten Thousand

A group of 3rd year Graphic Design students were asked to make an exhibition in Academy des Beaux Arts in Valence, France. The theme of the exhibtion was decided to be on a short story: “In the Year Ten Thousand”, by William Harben. The book tells the story of how the book is considered in a fictional future. A father takes his son, whom which he communicates by thoughts, to

see the last book on Earth. The son is questioned on the usage of the book, while his father explains the usages of the book in the present world. We decided to base our exhibition on this short story by making a simulation of it, giving the viewer a the same perspective the author in “In the Year Ten Thousand” tries to describe in the book. This would be achieved by

placing a camera that would detect the page where the book is opened in, which would trigger a visual projection of the book’s subject, resembling the thought communicated ideas in the book. The whole compound would be set up in a black stand inside a completely dark room where the viewer would be immersed in the whole experience.

Various ideas had been proposed for what the last book on earth should be like. We had decided that the book should contain illustrations with various text. We had decided it could contain poems from the present day, describing different stages and emotions in everyday life. We had looked for different poems and we filtered out so that only 9 poems remained to 6

The students from Academy des Beaux Arts were all surprised at the work in general and I had wondered what would they take from it. The staff at Academy des Beaux Arts in Valence, France were surprised at the quality of the work, and therefore decided to keep the exhibition until next week.

The actual exhibition day got postponed due to technical problems matching the videos and with the content of the book. This was a big point of stress, but we managed to surpass it, and luckily opened the exhibition on its last day of opening. General reaction to it was very positive, although I would have liked it to be
