“This manikin in the window of a Giorgio Armani store window is leaning on a pedestal hidden by the reflec;ng light of the glass. Across the street just above the gold topped iron fence spikes is a horse and buggy that is used for sightseeing rides. The dark outside areas of the window glass are ;nted so they reflect more from the street.” Richard Ewen Ewen (USA) Watercolor on fine art paper 38 cm (W) x 58 cm(H)Richard Ewenʼs watercolor pain3ngs, inspired by his adventures on the street of Pairs and the striking window displays he found there
His pain3ngs of window displays on Paris streets are a contemporary version of tradi3onal s3ll life pain3ngs To Ewen, s3ll life pain3ngs are most in3mate to humans; they reflect our daily life and represent what we value in our daily lives His realis3c pain3ngs are partly based upon photographs taken at random while wandering the streets of Paris The ar3st looks for eye-catching window displays and transforms this kind of commercial presenta3on into a fine art form through his use of watercolor Window displays are commercial goods made to impress people in this fast changing society; they thus have to be colorful, cheerful and fast changing as well In order to communicate to the viewers, window displays employ different social symbols that help transmit their messages, reflec3ng a society's culture and history Ewen, in his brightly colored pain3ngs, reflects present day Paris, and European culture as well as the influence history and architecture has had on this beau3ful city The window display is the mirror of our urban life, with bold colors, chic fashion design and energy Ewen is an ar3st who injects movement in s3ll life pain3ngs, redefining the genre itself
Ewen's watercolor pain3ngs require planning and concentra3on as watercolor is a medium that dries quickly and cannot be altered To portray the reflec3ons one sees in the window glass, Ewen has to achieve the layering of paint with care and precision This American born ar3st had his first solo exhibi3on in Texas in 2007; this is his first solo exhibi3on in Asia He was also appointed the Ar3stin-Residence by Dorland Mountain Arts Colony (California, 1991 & 1992) and awarded the Best of Show Grumbacher Award by the Eastern Washington Watercolor Society (Washington, 1991)

“Two hip girl manikins walking past an old 1913 photo of a beach. Reflected behind them is a metal support pole from inside the store that happens to line up with a traffic light on the street. I like the juxtaposition of old and new. You can just make out the outline of a car door on the left.” Richard Ewen Richard Ewen (USA) 2010, Watercolor on fine art paper 56 cm (W) x 81 cm(H) x 5cm (D)Richard Ewenʼs watercolor pain3ngs, inspired by his adventures on the street of Pairs and the striking window displays he found there

of twin always felt flare may well have been passed down from my mother's side She was one of a family of ten children Music and art was a central part of growing up in Dublin My grandfather was from five genera3ons of tailors and trained in Saville Row to become a bespoke tailor He had three shops in Ireland, one of which was in historical Kilmainham, Dublin On my father\'s side, my grandfather was an industrial designer and skilled draughtsman Thus the fabric of the ar3st was woven!”
“I can remember drawing from an early age, and was first introduced to oil pain3ng at Stonyhurst College, Lancashire I revelled in the fact that I could make my indelible mark on my own canvas, just like the great painters before me Hundreds of hours were spent in the \'Art Room\', where I learnt many of the techniques I use today I was given a great freedom in my art classes and achieved grade A's in GCSE and A-level Art & Design Moving to Birmingham, I successfully completed a BTEC Na3onal Diploma in Art & Design at Bourneville Art College
The first touch of paint on a primed canvas is always the most rewarding I try to keep as much of those first layers as possible, why fix something that isn\'t broken I think this is my secret to keeping a fresh look to my work The paint is applied with brushes only and I use limle or no paint thinners The consistency of the oil paint straight from the tube works perfectly for me I\'m not afraid of using space within my pain3ngs; less can mean more, allowing the pain3ng to invite the mind to imagine The contrast with colours, textures, light and shade are some of the many elements that con3nually fascinate me ”
