“Huang Yongyu is a very versatile and multi-talented artist who always brings surprises He never ceases to explore and take risks Moreover, he pushes boundaries and tries for the extreme and he is a very prolific artist There are very few artists who channel as much energy into art as he does. Huang’s talent is also apparent in his literary works There is wisdom, observation, wit, humour and compassion His writing enriches the way one sees his paintings ” (excerpt from the speech given by the Vice Chairman of the Basic Law Committee, Elsie Leung in 2004 at the opening an exhibition by Huang)

“Dancing Ink and Colour ” by Ann Yen of Chinese ink painting
The vivid colors, the stylized composition, the spontaneous strokes and splashes all these are the peculiar elements in Ann Yen’s paintings, which lead viewers from the mundane world to tranquility Born in Shanghai, Ms Yen showed her artistic talent at a young age in theatre Starting her acting career after the graduation from the Shanghai Drama Academy, she later won a scholarship to study filmmaking in New York University In spite of her background and career in the filming circle, she remained ardent in the pursuits of visual arts During her years in the U S, she studied painting, which she has been doing since her early childhood, in the renowned Art Students’ League
Her experience as a performer and a producer for, like the National Geographic Television and the Discovery Channel, enriches the perspective of her art, while a nomadic lifestyle, which means moving every 2 to 3 years to various cities with her husband, who is a diplomat, provides her with an abundance of inspiration For the past decades, she had solo and group exhibitions wherever life took her, in big cities like New York, Singapore, Beijing, Shanghai and so on Her paintings are collected by art lovers from all around the world Most of the proceeds of her art are donated to charities
Ms Yen paints in different media such as oil, pastel and watercolor Independent from any school or trend, she perceives art as “an expression of an individual’s inner being” In Ms Yen’s paintings, the Chinese and the Western elements are naturally integrated and indispensable of each other She paints the scenery with touches of Chinese ink-wash, while the exuberant colors and the nearly abstract imagery give a sense of Western modernity The exhibited work includes the series of The Doors, reflecting the cultural background of the artists As an oriental symbol, the doors, commonly found in traditional residence, represent a reminiscence of the fading past The limited range of colors pays tribute to the traditional ink painting, as well as forming a visual unity The harmonious composition of the door and the vegetation hints at the Chinese ideology of “nature and human as one”, providing the viewers with spiritual peace and visual meditation

Chui Tze Hung received a classical Chinese Introduction to art through the inseparable twins of calligraphy and brush painting But using the tradition brush, ink and rice paper, Chui chose to experiment with more abstract forms searching for the elusive and philosophical ideal of “form and spirit”
It is through landscape painting that Chui seeks to express himself in what he describes as his “Search for innocence”
Words often fall short of what the artist wishes to convey and it is interesting how calligraphy and painting have become mediums of mutual support and reinforcement
The combination of poetry and calligraphy and painting to express “form and spirit” in a landscape was a significant intellectual achievement. The landscape evokes a sense of completeness, universality and from the infinity of space down to the definitive of a single blade of grass
It is through the calligraphy approach of fluidity and economy of line that brush painting has become the means of capturing the elusive qualities of “form and spirit”
In Spring Time Weather, a recent work by Chui, we have the solidity of a mountain delineated in great strength on one side, as if to recognize the man-made mountains of architecture. This unequivocal symmetry contrasts with the indeterminate line of nature’s mountain swathed in mists of endless movement
The straight line of Western perspective with its implicit single viewing point also contrasts with the multiviewpoint of Chinese landscapes Chui reinforces this contrast and the perceptual limitation that Western perspective gives to man’s observation of the world He found the indefinable ‘spirit’ in Chinese landscape painting was absent in Western realistic painting
So, although Chui experimented with Western style abstractions in his work, he remains committed to the ideals of Chinese brush painting Hence in a sense his return to tradition
The Malaysian jungle was the inspiration where the complex structure of life allowed the smallest of creatures to survive, each in a cycle yet related to the whole
