Our October Business Profile is Alamo City Gold & Silver. Working as a police officer many years ago, David Putnam started a side career as a jeweler to help supplement his income. Now a retired detective, he has continued to build a very successful jewelry business. But his real pride and joy is his “End of Watch” program. This month’s neighbors you’ll be meeting are Ben and Martha Gray. Friends introduced them at a concert at Floore’s Country Store 15 years ago. Berit Mason has been a reporter - anchor for WOAI 1200 AM Radio, a contributor to the San Antonio Business Journal, a writer for SA Scene magazine, and for San Antonio Woman. Berit also worked in T.V., as a reporter - anchor in West Texas and in Waco, where she was a RIAS Berlin Commission German - American Exchange Journalist, starting her career interning with CNN Washington. Ron may be the ultimate renaissance man; an educator, writer, radio talk show host, media and PR specialist, award winning film producer, and daddy. Many folks also know him as a top-rated radio talk show host on San Antonio radio stations KTSA, 760 The Ticket, and WOAI. And he hosted talk shows on WRC, Washington D.C., and WCAU, Philadelphia. In the non-profit sector, Ron was the first male in America to serve as executive director of a Rape Crisis Center. He and his wife, Gina Galaviz Eisenberg, live in San Antonio. They adopted three children: Reagan, born in 2011, and twin boys, Carter & Kennedy, born in 2013. He also has two older sons, Mitch and Chris.

Over 100 years ago, a World War I military balloon camp known as Camp John Wise sat in modern day Olmos Park. At its height, the base reached a maximum strength of 33 officers, 1,800 enlisted men and was equipped with four balloons. In 1927, shortly after the closing of the base, the Olmos Dam was built as a direct result of the catastrophic flood of 1921. It has become the first level of defense in flood control. In 1940, the Bexar County Girl Scout Council obtained part of the area where Camp John Wise was located and Olmos Day Camp for Girl Scouts was born. Many ’09 ladies may have memories of these days from their childhood. Today this hidden gem with approximately five miles of dirt trails and two miles of concrete walking paths is called Olmos Basin Park. It’s full of mature oak trees in the picnic area that provide plenty of shade. There are a few areas set up for large family cookouts and a nice little playground for the kids, nice trails for a relaxing walk or run as well as soccer fields.

While COVID-19 put a crimp in the annual event last year – forcing it to go virtual, the dinner is back on track for this year. Dubbed “The Lone Star Revival”, the game dinner is set for October 18 in the Witte Museum Zachry Family Acequia Garden. On its website, the museum noted, “Last year was all about survival for your beloved museum and you came through so generously. This year, it is about revival. In the Loop School Bus Driver Shortage Confronts AHISD
Like school districts everywhere, Alamo Heights ISD is accepting applications for bus drivers. In the wake of COVID-19, there is a shortage of drivers and a great need for them. Applicants for AHISD bus driving jobs must be at least 21 years old and possess a valid Texas Driver’s License. They should have a driving record that meets the requirements of the district and state of Texas, as well as, be able to pass a background check and fingerprinting. A pre-employment physical evaluation, including a drug test, is required. Plus,
applicants must be able to obtain a Texas Department of Public Safety School Bus Certification within 90 days. The hourly rate for Bus Drivers ranges from $15.06 - $21.66 an hour. Drivers can expect to work a total of 177 days during the school year. Only those persons meeting the minimum qualifications will be considered. avid Putnam began his career in the jewelry business as a side job to supplement a young police officer’s salary. Throughout his decorated tenure as a law enforcement officer and detective, he built his business into the thriving enterprise it is today. Alamo City Gold & Silver has occupied the same building on the access road of Loop 410 since 1985. It houses an impressive and spacious showroom and a design studio and mini-museum in the back of the store, showcasing unique collector’s items and sports memorabilia. Alamo City Gold & Silver is a full-service jewelry store offering custom-designed jewelry and decorative pieces. Their creations are one-of-a-kind. The store employs several jewelry artisans specializing in custom rings, pendants, belt buckles, and school-branded jewelry. Every single day, David checks the Officer Down Memorial Page online to read the stories of the brave men and women in law enforcement who have died in the line of duty. David and his staff then set out to create a unique “End of Watch” memorial pendant for the family of the fallen officers. These pendants are sent to the fallen officers’ superiors and usually presented to the families at their memorial services. These memorial pendants are not ordered by the families; they are created and paid for entirely by Alamo City Gold & Silver. David began the program by honoring fallen officers in San Antonio and Bexar County, and then it spread across Texas. Today, the program honors officers across the entire U.S. Some families may never know where they came from, but many of the families are moved beyond words by the kindness of a fellow officer who has made a promise to honor the lives and careers of those who have lost their lives protecting others. pon walking into the home of Ben and Martha Gray, you would never know they had four children. Their home is a clean palette of whites and neutrals with perfectly placed furniture throughout the living areas. It isn’t until Henry comes barreling into the living room and pounces on his fleet of construction truck toys that you begin to acclimate to the happy noise of large family chaos.
Ben and Martha are both native Texans. Ben grew up in San Antonio and attended San Antonio Christian School. He then graduated from U.T. Austin with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He currently works for the family business that his father started in 1980. The company, H.A. Gray & Associates, is a regional distributor for EVAPCO and a leader in industrial cooling towers. Ben also oversees their service company, Tower Tech Services, servicing cooling systems in Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. Martha grew up in Kerrville and attended Baylor University. In 2006, she was in her third year of residency at the U.T. Health Science Center, studying to be an anesthesiologist, when they met through mutual friends at a Robert Earl Keen concert at Floore’s Country Store. When she isn’t wrangling her energetic family, Martha works part-time as a board-certified anesthesiologist. The Grays have lived in their current home in 78209 for nearly four years, and they love the community. One of Ben’s best friends from childhood lives next door to them, and the brother of another close friend lives on the other side. Ben says of his Alamo Heights community, “Living in 78209 is like living in a small town inside of a big city. Everyone becomes such great friends, and you become ingrained in each other’s lives.” Their oldest daughter, Mattie (9), is very outgoing and engaging. She tried to help corral her younger siblings when the family was trying to get situated for their family portrait. Mattie attends Woodridge Elementary School. Her brother, Henry (5), is a rambunctious ball of boy energy, and he loves to ride his motorized ATV in

the backyard when the neighborhood boys come over. The younger girls, Liza (3) and Katie (2), are adorable, and they love to play with their big sister’s Barbie toys and with their Legos. When they’re not chasing children around, Ben and Martha love to entertain and have friends over for dinner. Everyone in the family helps out in the kitchen. Mattie loves to bake, and Martha beams when she tells us that her daughter often makes pancakes and waffles for breakfast on the weekends. Ben brags that his wife makes “the best fried chicken” he’s ever had, and when they talk about their time spent with friends, the couple agrees that, “You can’t go wrong with a great steak and a bottle of wine.” In their downtime, the family loves to spend time at their beach house in Port Aransas together, and Ben is an avid hunter of upland game birds, and he enjoys spending time on the family’s ranch with his German Shorthaired Pointers, Pearl and Riley. On most Sundays, you can find the family attending services at Shearer Hills Baptist Church, where they have made many friends. At home, the Grays have big plans for their family as they add amenities to their home to accommodate the kids as they grow. They all love to swim, and they hope to install a swimming pool in the backyard soon. Ben and Martha enjoy spending time with their children more than anything else in the world and it is so evident by the love that can be seen and felt when you enter their home. They are thankful to be raising their children in a neighborhood where family is such a priority. They are so thankful to be a part of the ‘09 community.

Neighborhood News Neighbors Up in Arms Over Planned Development on Katherine Court BY RON AARON EISENBERG
Trebes Sasser Jr., Ridgemont Properties, is proposing to build a threestory, multi-family-apartment building on properties his firm acquired at 111, 119, 131, and 135 Katherine Court in Alamo Heights. The initial proposal called for more than 60 rental units. Several neighbors claim the project is totally out of character for the neighborhood. One neighbor, whose property would be adjacent to the apartment complex, says it would dwarf her home. Other neighbors say the building will generate too much traffic on their street, while some neighbors suggest the proximity to Incarnate Word University will attract students who will be disruptive to the neighborhood’s tranquility. The developers and their architects have met with neighbors and have proposed a new use for the property -- a three-story multi-family building with on-site parking located in the rear. The new development will follow the planning standards for character, height, setbacks, planting, and impervious cover. It will feature fewer rental units. Alamo Heights city council member Lynda Billa Burke told 78209 Magazine that she thinks the project could be good for the neighborhood, although she has some concerns.
Bottom line, council member Billa Burke said, “Thanks to the Texas State Legislature, local governments have no authority whatsoever to intervene in projects like this one. And the developer doesn’t have to talk with the neighbors, although Ridgemont Properties has chosen to do so. She added, “Neighbors should understand that ‘no’ is never an answer. They should develop a plan A and a plan B to present to the developer as a constructive way to discuss their concerns and ideas for the neighborhood.” But just opposing a project – saying “no” – is counterproductive.
Low Hanging Branches Damaging AHISD School Buses in Olmos Park Olmos Park Public Works Director Gilbert DeLeon recently alerted residents, “We have received complaints from the Alamo Heights School District regarding many low hanging branches causing damage to school buses. He urged homeowners to make sure trees and branches comply with city ordinance 18-67, Prohibition (d): Overhanging limbs. It shall be unlawful for any person or his agent, owning, renting, or having under his control any lot or premises, whether vacant or improved, within the city to permit trees to overhang Olmos Drive, Devine Road, and McCullough Avenue any less than 15 feet as measured above any drivable portion of the roadway. All other streets must maintain, measured as above, a minimum clearance of 13 feet. Ordinance 28-4: Collection of garbage, brush, and other waste materials. d) Trimming by Commercial Tree Services: A commercial landscaping service, whether an individual or a company, shall remove all branches, cuttings, or debris produced by their work. City employees shall not be required to collect or remove limbs or cuttings left in the city by commercial tree trimmers, regardless of the amount. “All brush and large trimmings not in containers shall be prepared, placed along the curb line, and city hall notified that it is ready for collection. Trees or limbs to be collected by the city cannot exceed three inches in diameter or six feet in length, with all lateral branches trimmed. This service shall be provided at least once weekly. The removal of a large volume of brush and trimmings exceeding 250 cubic feet in volume shall be the responsibility of the owner.”

Neighborhood News Alamo Heights Rotary Volunteers Help Build Beds for “Bedless” Kids Alamo Heights Rotary President Kristen Salazar recently told 78209 Magazine, “We’re putting more of a focus on doing work in the community by volunteering at least monthly.” She said Rotary members have recently volunteered at the Texas Diaper Bank. In October, they are volunteering at Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) to make bunk beds for children who are don’t have a bed. SHP staff told Salazar there are hundreds of kids in Bexar County who go to bed every night without beds. SHP is a group of volunteers dedicated to building, assembling, and delivering hand-made bunk beds to children and families in need. Founded in Iowa in 2012, the organization now has over 240 chapters nationwide, including San Antonio. The Texas Diaper Bank states that one in three families don’t have access to an adequate supply of diapers. The Bank recognized this need and has been working since 2013 to change the lives of babies, children with disabilities, and seniors in the Greater San Antonio Area and 12 surrounding counties. Salazar told 78209 Magazine, “We are looking for other

Coyote Sightings in Terrell Hills Generally, coyotes are reclusive animals who avoid human contact. But in recent months, neighbors in Terrell Hills have reported seeing coyotes in their neighborhoods. The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) notes, on its website, “Coyotes have adapted to urban and suburban environments. They realize there are few real threats and they may even approach people or feel safe visiting yards when people are present. HSUS adds, “These coyotes have become habituated (lost their fear of humans), probably owing to the bounty of food that they have become accustomed to feeding upon in our neighborhoods. These bold coyotes should not be tolerated or enticed, but instead given the clear message that they should not be so brazen.” HSUS recommends hazing as a method that makes use of deterrents to move an animal out of an area or discourage an undesirable behavior or activity. Hazing can help maintain a coyote’s fear of humans and deter them from backyards and play spaces. Using a variety of different hazing tools is critical so coyotes don’t get used to a single stimulus device, sounds, and actions. • Yelling and waving your arms while approaching a coyote
or Yelling “Go away, coyote” • Noisemakers: Voice, whistles, air horns, bells, “shaker” cans full of marbles or pennies, pots, lid or pie pans banged together • Projectiles: sticks, small rocks, cans, tennis balls or rubber balls – but do not try to hit the animal • Other: hoses, water guns with vinegar water, spray bottles with vinegar water, pepper spray or bear repellent There are several tools that you can carry with you while walking your dog that can be used to repel coyotes. AHHS STUDENT NAMED KENS 5 ALL-STAR
Dylan Corso, a junior at Alamo Heights High School, was surprised with the KENS 5 and UPS Store All-Star Student Award. Dylan made his way to the front of Alamo Heights High School thinking he was going to be a part of promotional to be played on the school’s new videoboard at Harry B. Orem Stadium. Little did he know; the promotion would focus on him and all he does to promote and share the stories of his peers. Surrounded by his peers, Corso learned that he had been nominated for the honor by his Television Broadcast Teacher, Ann Carter, and Principal, Cory Smith, . Dylan is an outstanding student who loves videography, video production and broadcast. He loves to create and share student and staff stories at Alamo Heights High
School. He has long since been a part of the production and broadcast team at the high school and most recently stepped into a leadership role producing sports events for the new video board installed at Harry B. Orem Stadium just a month ago. With his first game under his belt, Dylan is passionate about his work and his enthusiasm is contagious. He is always engaged, thoughtful, asking questions, learning and finding ways to improve his product. He works with a talented team of fellow students and teachers who are beyond excited to be a part of something larger than themselves, rather, it allows them to share the stories and celebrations of others in the most creative ways. Alamo Heights Junior School’s Tristan Salinas, a third year English Language Arts teacher and coach, has been recognized for his work and honored with the KENS 5 and Credit Human with the EXCEL Award recognizing outstanding teachers. A 2018 graduate of Texas State University with a bachelor’s degree in Exercise and Sports Science and a minor in English, this new teacher has been making connections and building relationships with his students, attending their extracurricular activities to share his support for them both in and outside the classroom. Salinas shares that a quote from Dr. James Comer helps him stay grounded in his work. Comer states, “No significant learning occurs without a significant relationship.” Salinas shares, “This quote truly embodies how I feel about teaching. I feel like a student’s best work is created when they know their teacher cares about them and will do anything in their power to help them be successful both in the classroom and in their life in general. Teaching is all about relationships and as an educator I’m blessed to form those every day I set foot on campus.” Salinas serves Alamo Heights Junior School as a 6th grade English teacher, and 7th and 8th grade boys’ athletics coach. “I chose to become a teacher to make an impact on student’s lives and to inspire them to never set limits on 32 OCTOBER 2021 | 78209magazine.com
themselves. I think being a teacher and a coach is one of the best professions in the world. The impact and relationships we are able to form with our athletes and students is something that I believe lasts a lifetime and truly makes a difference in their lives,” shared Salinas. “I am blessed every day to be a part of such a rewarding profession.” Salinas is making an impact on his students and colleagues at AHJS. His campus principal, Laura Ancira, nominated him for the award, sharing, “Tristan is loved by parents and students. He values the importance of relationships and works daily to build relationships and connect with all students and their families.” Salinas attributes his success to his amazing support system. He shares his gratitude for those who support him in his journey as a teacher, sharing that his fiancé pushes him to do his best every day. He is grateful for parents who have been great in supporting and encouraging him throughout his life, including two brothers who he calls his best friends. He shares his appreciation for his school family, acknowledging that he works alongside a great group of educators and coaches. “I believe that I learn just as much from my students as they learn from me. My students and athletes push me to be the best educator and coach I can be, continuing to amaze me every single day I show up to school,” shared Salinas.

We just have a conversation!” Bella and Bonnie are a volunteer team with Pups n' Planes, where “comfort” dogs and their owners offer distressed travelers a little sugar. “People are waiting, their flight has been canceled, or they may have a four-hour wait, and they are upset.” “One time, two little girls stopped to pet the dog, and I looked up, and the mother was crying. Her husband was being deployed. I spent probably a half-hour with them, and the dad thanked me so many times because it got them thinking about other things,” Bonnie says. Airport staffers implemented the idea after learning how well it worked at the Los Angeles International Airport. Pups n' Planes has been reducing blood pressure and turning frowns upside down for six years. “In the car, she knows that we are almost at the airport. She gets so excited! Her job is to make people smile. She does that job.” And if you saw Bella, you would smile, too. The girl team also spends time at the airport USO, softening the loneliness and longing of our troops, so familiar to military life. While Bella offers kisses, Canine Explosive Detection Supervisor Sgt. Andres Lopez, and his police dog Keyno, provide safety and security. “We are there to make sure that the traveling public is safe, the dog makes that any threats associated with aviation there aren’t real threats,” says the airport K9 police officer. Lopez and Keyno “nose around," sniffing out threats that could come from a parked car, a suitcase, or a person. “Dogs are about as mobile as you can get,” says Lopez. He means the nose is mobile.

Hurricane Ida landed in Port Fourchon, Louisiana, on Sunday, August 29th, bringing high winds, storm surges, and tremendous amounts of flooding and power outages. Most of us watched in awe at the video of Hurricane Ida hitting coastal Louisiana. Hurricane Ida was one of the most powerful storms to hit the country, so shelters in the strike zone lost water and electricity, leaving animals in those shelters severely traumatized. Animal rescue groups from around the country rushed in to assist locals, helping with animal search and rescue and emergency sheltering. Some animal shelters in upper Florida flew their dogs to California shelters to make room for pets from Louisiana. It was a relay race, all over the country. In animal rescue, a big job after a climate catastrophe is to reunite pets and owners, so that is why microchipping a pet is so important. Those Louisiana pets collected by the SAHS have remained here to be adopted. “Every year, the SAHS shelters medically treat and rehabilitate thousands of animals. Many are injured, abused, surrendered by their owners, or found as strays. All pets remain in our care until adopted. Our mission is to protect and improve the lives of dogs and cats by providing shelter, care, adoption, rescue, spay and neuter programs, and community education,” says May. The organization is in need of donations of dog/cat beds, paper towels, pet toys, treats, rubbing alcohol, and bottled water. It’s best to call them first to ensure those items are still needed. The San Antonio Humane Society (SAHS) is a local nonprofit, no-kill organization that has served Bexar County and its surrounding areas since 1952 but is not affiliated with the Humane Society of the United States.

A
giant red octopus greets you as you walk through the door at Piranha Izakaya, and you can’t help but root for the Japanese warrior trying to slay the enormous beast. The mural encompasses the entire wall and sets the stage for the wonderful Japanese fare that has made Piranha Izakaya an Alamo Heights favorite for nearly 10 years.
The décor is chic and minimalistic, with beautiful wooden tables and accents throughout the airy dining room. This allows for the food to take center stage. The menu offers several small plates to get you started, featuring traditional Japanese appetizers like gyoza, crispy pork and vegetable dumplings, as well as edamame and stir-fried Ginger Beef. However, their standout small plate nods back to the eight-legged monster on the wall. Takoyaki are delicious octopus fritter balls rooted in sweet soy and drizzled with a ginger cream sauce and topped with green onion and bonito flakes. They are dense and flavorful, but they are also filling, so make sure to share them so you can sample several different items from the menu. Japanese food is one of the most diverse cuisines in the world. There is so much more to it than just sushi, and Piranha Izakaya showcases this diversity with their ramen noodle bowl options. There are several flavor profiles to choose from and you can add just about anything you like to the ramen based on what you are craving. The Spicy Miso ramen is served steaming hot, but it’s the heat in the broth that will have you ordering another Sapporo. It features chewy bamboo slices, minced pork, scallions, a poached egg, and rayu, a Japanese chili oil that will assault your taste buds and satisfy even the most hardcore spicy food lovers. Once your palate begins to experience the myriad of flavors coming at you, you’ll want to order one of Piranha Izakaya’s specialty house-infused cocktails. Just above the bar on a high shelf, you’ll see several large glass jars slowly seeping fruit flavors into name brand liquors. Try the refreshing Cucumber Cooler with cucumber infused vodka, fresh lime juice, mint, and bitters. The restaurant offers a great selection of sake, as well as Japanese and craft beer and wine. They also feature Happy Hour every day from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. with reduced prices at
the bar and on their most popular appetizers. The sushi and sashimi menu features many classic sushi rolls, as well as some delicious and very creative original rolls. Guests will find it hard to decide between the inventive Ribeye Roll, which features cold slices of ribeye steak, cucumber, avocado, scallions, tempura fried sweet potato and spicy mustard vinaigrette, and the signature Piranha Roll with spicy salmon, cucumber, avocado, tuna, spicy ponzu sauce and kizami, a lighter version of wasabi with green onion and citrus. So, whether you are a traditionalist, or your palate is a bit more adventurous, there is always something new to discover at Piranha Izakaya. There are five Piranha Izakaya locations throughout Texas, and the restaurant recently underwent a remodel in 2019 bringing in modern, hand carved furniture and installing a beautiful and very intricate infinity design piece in the center of the ceiling. The architect was inspired by the meticulous woodwork he saw in Japan and wanted to create a modern focal point for the dining room. The restaurant staff is very attentive and friendly, and the General Manager, Hieu Pham, speaks earnestly when he states, “What sets our restaurant staff apart is our teamwork. The customer comes first, and we work together to make sure that our customers leave happy.” Even during this pandemic, when restaurants are having such a hard time hiring and retaining employees, Piranha Izakaya has experienced very little turnover. There is something to satisfy everyone at Piranha Izakaya, and there are plans soon to bring back the yakitori grill, as well. The restaurant is open for lunch with bento box specials, and they are open for dinner and takeout orders. If you are looking for something a little different, and you are willing to be a little adventurous, then Piranha Izakaya is the perfect place to take a culinary walk on the wild side. 78209magazine.com | OCTOBER 2021 47
