01 // CONSUMER CULTURE The first section explores the role of consumerism and material objects within literature and how this connects to the idea of everday ruins in the form of festivals. Although these structures are temporary, they still provide a grandiose atmosphere through hand-crafted details. These form the basis of a new narrative for a shopping-oriented festival with kitsch and abnormal spaces.

Literary Inspirations 1. Motel of the Mysteries Illustrative book describing the career of archaeologist Howard Carson as he discovers a buried motel room in the year 4022 which allows him to fabricate the story of an extraordinary civilisation. 2. Kingdom Come This novel follows the exploits of Richar Pearson, a rebellious, unemployed advertising executive, whose father is gunned down by a deranged mental patient in a vast shopping mall outside Heathrow Airport.

Catalogue of Artifacts The book is a satirical take on the archaeological profession, our views about past society and how objects are the gateway to learning more about the way we live our lives when importance is given to material culture.

Durga Puja Pandals Durga Puja Pandals take on a temporary presence within the streetscapes of Kolktata. They are inticately hand-crafted, emphasising the grandeur of the festival that encroaches on everyday spaces, causing a shift in the urban fabric. 1. Pandal taking over the street corner, pedestrianising the space 2. All remnants of the pandal are erased, returning back to its original purpose

02 // Retail Architecture By diving further into what makes up the essence of the British High Street, the project begins to extrapolate and dissect these objects and reconfigure them into architectural spaces. Imagining a mall where these objects form the structures as well as the interior elements allows us to reinforce the idea of shopping as a cultural obsession.

Sketch Plan & Elevation
— Building Design 1073
This sketch plan envisions the previous spaces connected and arranged as one entity. Playing with the scale of the forms allows for a greater variation and creates a new language overall. The food court space is centrically located, ideally suspended and connected to the other areas. The short elevation depicts shop shutters as a cladding material which becomes part of the festival.

Wim Delvoye Sculptures Delvoye’s sculptural work involves adorning mundane objects such as cement mixers, shovels, and gas cylinders with decorative Delft patterning. This process can be applied in a similar way by treating the shopping objects as the building blocks for the architecture instead of traditional materials. 1. Cement Truck 2. Concrete Mixer

Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent The chosen site for the project is a small town in Stoke-on-Trent. Burslem is known for being Britain’s most depressing High Street. Formerly a thriving trade town, often referred to as the ‘Mother Town’ of pottery, it is now a derelict and low-functioning area with only a small number of retail businesses. Choosing this site to redevelop and regenerate, almost as a test site for a new phase of ‘shopping’ is intentional and will ideally benefit the larger community.

Opportunities & Constraints The site is located in the heart of the High Street on a traffic island which is surrounded by various shops and residential buildings. Many of the buildings located around the site are also locally and Grade II listed, further highlighting the area’s historical architectural value. There are plenty of transport links around the site.

The Shop Shutter A key part of the architecture of High Streets in Britain is the shop shutter. The shutter is part of the threshold yet also a key element of the facade. It is designed to keep valuable protected, preserving the shopping objects inside. The project aims to use these shop shutters not only as part of the exterior facade but also as part of the shopping festival.

Shutter Frames The shutter component is comprised of lightweight steel frames that have been recycled from previous projects. These can be arranged in various formations to create visual interest or a linear design. Some of the ground floor shutters may also open up in a non-conventional way to act as openings for some of the spaces.

The bronze facade offers the gravitas of stone which is a similar aesthetic to the shop shutters on the perimeter of the building. Similarly, in the current scheme, the shutters are part of the grand opening and closing ceremonies that take place during the shopping festival but they also act as vital elements that tie together the core spaces.

Wishbin Tension Elements
— Building Design 1073
The wishbone element is connected to the primary structure, creating tension across the floors which allows for a lightweight frame which holds up the glass dome. It is created from various styles of public bins as well as recycled tension cables. These provide the necessary support for the rest of the structure.

04 // Religion of Shopping The final part of the portfolio deepens the idea of shopping being the foundation of the building, from the core structure to the purpose of the spaces inside. Shopping is thus treated similar to a religion, presenting moments where the extravagance of religious festivals is mirrored through the key components.

Hall of Forgotten Artifacts
— Building Design 1073
The Hall is one of the key spaces within the building, housing vintage memorabilia related to shopping, ranging from iconic products of the past all the way to redundant objects used whilst shopping such as plastic bags and trolley coins. The structure itself is comprised of retail waste, most notably food display counters which form the dome structure, emphasising the importance of the objects inside.

HoFA Section Being the central element in the building, the Hall of Forgotten Artifacts is the most important space, connecting the Shopping Arcades and the rest of the internal areas. The use of the cage columns and shutter cladding is also repeated here. The space is crowned with the Trove Tower, a sculptural piece that is comprised of discarded retail waste that has been designed to mimic the clock tower on the Old Town Hall in order to match the surrounding context yet remain subservient.

Shutter Skin
— Building Design 1073
The exterior skin of the building is comprised of shop shutters, creating a metallic facade which partially reflects the surrounding architecture of the High Street. Selected shutters will also remain open throughout the day in order to provide access and daylight. At the end of the day, these are mechanically closed during the Grand Shutter Ceremony, marking the end of the trading day.

Foundation / Column / Floor This particular detail explores the primary structure which involves the bespoke columns which are placed at strategic locations throughout the site.
In relation to the structural load, they are connected to a pad foundation which is also supported by a beam of concrete which runs underneath the secondary structures and offers further support to avoid the columns from buckling.

Booth / Floor / Window The Garden of Eat’n booth is a luxury, sensory experience situated in the food court space. This particular detail explores the cantilevered bay window booth which is set apart from the shutter facade in order to act as a private moment, playing on the theme of shopping as a sacred activity. The booths comprise of elements of retail waste, using the pegboard shop shelving as a cladding material as well as any reclaimed timber for the flooring.

Floor / Roof Part of the Hall of Artifacts, this detail explores the roof structure which comprises of curved glass panels taken from hot food counters and display fridges to use as a material for the roof. This may seem like an unusual choice but it plays to the narrative and builds upon the ideas that this space is the most prized area, treating the construction almost like a cathedral or sacred place but for shopping.
