A Message from the Director. . .
As summer starts to unwind, and we begin packing up our summer camp boxes, we are also preparing for another school year of jam packed programs and events! While you can’t beat the summer fun in Parks & Recreation, we have a lot going on this fall to be excited about! Looking back at the summer, we completed and celebrated the new Trail Wayfinding Project for Eaton and Big Canyon Parks which included new directional signage and mileage markers, new kiosk maps and a trail tri-fold brochure. In June, we broke ground on the Highlands Park Playground and Restroom replacement project. Construction is coming along and the playground is expected to re-open in November 2017. New and enhanced play equipment, expanded play area, redwood seated deck, improved access to Stadium Field with ADAcompliant pathways, and updated and expanded restrooms will complete the project. Check out page 6 of the Activity Guide for ways to “stamp” your name on the project through sponsorship opportunities with our Parks & Recreation Foundation of San Carlos.
Just as Highlands Park playground re-opens later this fall, we will begin a renovation of the Youth Center at Burton Park. This project will include maintenance updates to the building including roof repairs, water and weatherproofing, exterior dry rot fixes and exterior paint, in addition to a new reception desk, new updated commercial-grade kitchen, new hallway flooring and new gym bleachers.
In addition to planning park and facility improvement projects, Parks & Recreation is gearing up for our fall community events. If you haven’t joined us at the Goblin Walk before, get dressed in your favorite costume and trick-or-treat down Laurel Street with us on October 27. A few weeks later, we kick-off the holiday season with the lighting of Laurel Street at Night of Holiday Lights on December 1. Take part in the arts & crafts, snow play area, live music, holiday entertainment show and children’s amusement rides throughout the evening! More information on our Community Events can be found at www.cityofsancarlos.org/events. We hope to see you at one of our events, parks or programs this fall! Amy Newby

Recreation classes for little ones offer many benefits. Early exposure to music helps develop areas of the brain that involve language and reasoning. Students of the arts learn to think creatively and solve problems. Dance helps children mature physically, emotionally, and socially. Sports will build motor skills, teach responsibility and teamwork, and encourage a healthy lifestyle. Kids that are active are more likely to continue being active as they get older.

T-Sports Baseball Skill Sessions (Ages 6-13 yrs)
Skill Sessions take place on Tuesdays and Sundays for players who wish to brush up on fundamentals during the off season. During the session, players will develop their offensive, defensive, and game time skills. We understand many players move on to play basketball, soccer, and other sports this time of year but still want to keep their baseball IQ intact. The short clinic is a fun and exciting way for players to refresh their memories on any tips and tricks they received during the Summer Camp Season. Skill Sessions are a good fit for players new to the game looking to establish the basics, but also advanced players trying to take their game to the next level. Coaches teach with enthusiasm and passion and new and exciting aspects of the game are covered each session with an emphasis on teamwork. Working together towards a common goal is a constant theme not only during Skill Sessions but is found in any T-Sports environment. We believe that in order for a player to excel individually, that player must first excel as a member of the team! $750 for all 35 Skill Sessions $30 for a One Skill Session Credit T/Su 9/5-1/2 4:00pm-5:30pm Register online at www.tsports.club/skill-clinics

Youth Advisory Council What is the YAC?
The Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is an all volunteer advisory council to the San Carlos City Council comprised of Middle School and High School Teens.
What types of projects do they do?
The YAC strengthens the image of community for our young people in San Carlos. We promote health and wellness in conducting workshops on teen issues and advise the City Council on youth-related programs. We foster human development by offering activities and events suggested by youth, for youth. The YAC does volunteer work throughout the community. The YAC helped fundraise and build the San Carlos Youth Center and continues to recommend ideas for ongoing programs and operations.

Senior Fencing
Stretch, Strength and Balance
Senior exercise is an important part of the health and wellness of seniors. It helps increase your metabolism, energy levels, and alertness. Research shows that those suffering from chronic illness benefit from exercise even if it is done while sitting in a chair. Chair exercises are great for older adults, those with disabilities, poor balance, or anyone who has trouble standing or getting on the floor to do exercises. They are always gentle on the body and generally safe for most people to do. It is always a good idea to talk to your doctor before beginning a new exercise program, but you are not likely to injure yourself doing any of these exercises. Bring a 5 lb. dumbbell weight with you to the first class. Be sure to wear loose clothing and comfortable, supportive shoes. No cost. M/W/F 9:00am-10:00am Ongoing ACC

Are You Ready?
Emergency Preparedness Planning! This 2-hour presentation will provide valuable information on topics such as creating a family/office disaster plan, assembling home/office and portable disaster supply kit, sheltering in place, evacuation procedures, and preparing for and responding to specific disasters. Since we can only do our best to prevent man-made disasters and terrorism, and since we certainly can’t control “mothernature,” it’s only a matter of time before a minor or major incident occurs in or around our immediate area. When a disaster happens and Police, Fire and Emergency Services are overwhelmed, will you be prepared to care for yourself, family, friends, and neighbors? In all places, home, work or school, it pays to be ready and prepared to deal with all types of natural and man-made disasters. Here on the Peninsula, we are subject to power outages, earthquakes, fires, floods, severe storms, extreme heat, gas leaks, plane crashes, disease and/or flu pandemics, and a host of other possible situations. Free! Schedule a presentation for your business, group, or club today. Email to cert@redwoodcity.org, enter “Are you Ready?” in your subject line.
